I've spent the past two days trying to get some sort of data working on my AT&T Tilt in Israel (Cellcom).
No matter what I try, WiFi won't work. I've tried a number of different NBHs, and I am currently using fultotop's 320-PANEL2. . I have also tried variants of Eclair. Used Polymod 2.1g, and now using Polymod 2.1d. I have tried Polaris 1.1 as well. Nothing works, and all I get is "Unable to start WiFi."
Giving up on WiFi, I called Cellcom and asked for a data plan. I set up two APNs as per instructions. The "internetg" icon is green and when I try to use data, I have an icon in my toolbar showing some sort of a connection. However, the data does not actually work. It is worth noting that the 3G icon is not constant, and really comes and goes. It is only constant when plugged into USB, but nonetheless does not give me a usable data connection.
I've also tried two radios, 1.71.xx? and 1.70.xx?. Right now I am using the latter.
Any ideas? I'm about to just give up and use WM6.5, but I hate giving up.
All I can recommend is to keep trying different radios. People report success with all sorts of them. I personally use 1.71.x with no problems, but some have reported fully working data, wifi, etc. with 1.65.x as well. Keep trying! Once you finally get it working you'll be glad you put in the extra bit of effort!
Edit: Also make sure you are using the recommended HardSPL if you are using Android from NAND. If you're not sure what HardSPL/Radio/NBH is recommended, then ask in the thread you got your ROM from.

I was using MIUI and it had 4G all the time... then I switched to Virtuous and it had so many problems with reception automatically.
I also tried installing the kernel to fix it, but it didn't work.
so i gave up and I went to CM7 and I am still not getting 4G signal anymore
and I get internet but its ridiculously slow now
PLZ HELP!
could be several things... if it's a rom/radio issue, you're s.o.l. until you can narrow down what's causing it there. did you perform a full wipe between Virtuous and CM7? did you use cwm recovery to perform the wipe? any other weirdness going on besides the apparent lack of HSPA+? I always, even going from one CM-based rom to another, perform a clean wipe either thru adb or, now, thanks to our buddy amazinglarry, using superwipeg2. you might give that a shot (you don't need to wipe efs data unless you're having gps issues, by the way) and install CM7 clean again.
I will say this: when I initially started using the CM7 nightlies, I ran into a weird issue where my "H" icon wouldn't show up, only 3G/E, but I was definitely on HSPA+ as evidenced from speed tests (there's no way I'd be getting 9000+kbps down on 3G). so, very first step: download Speed Test on the app market and, if you're in an area where HSPA+ is strong, see if you can tell whether or not the icon is not displaying for you like what happened in my case. how fast your internet seems to be going isn't really indicative of whether or not you're on HSPA+ or not, you can encounter horrendous lag browsing even in an area where it should be lightning quick. what ended up fixing the missing H icon for me, oddly, was a radio flash. the PC10IMG method of flashing radios is far from intimidating, so even if you're uncomfortable with that kind of stuff, give it a shot. I've had the best luck with the TMO-US post-OTA radio (26.03.02.26) in terms of a good balance between speed and battery life, but ymmv.
if none of that solves your problem, check your APN settings. here is a pretty thorough walkthrough on that.
aaaand if all else fails, call TMO and ask them to give you a hand. of course, don't tell them anything about custom roms or rooting, just tell them you're having a problem where your phone seems to not be receiving HSPA+ signal. it very well could be a goof-up on their end. when I first got my G1 back in the day, I had all sorts of trouble getting 3G and I eventually had to replace my sim card which fixed the problem automatically.
best'a luck.
thank you, it was the Radio. Something must have happened with it somehow you were VERY VERY helpful!
One thing you do have to know as well for Virtuous ROMs is that the so called 4G or H is actually represented as 3G+. So if you look at your signal and see a + behind it, it is using fauxG
EDIT: nm, just ignore what I just said. I completely passed over the fact that you switched to cm7.
[Solved]Been awhile since I've been here...Anyways,
Up until maybe a few weeks ago, my data connection has been working 100% fine no matter what ROM I've switched to. Then I somehow hit a roadblock. I hadn't really noticed, but when I wasn't on Wi-Fi, I couldn't connect with any apps to the internet, nor use the browser. My phone shows connection and bars, but it won't actually work. It just tells me there's no data connection available, or whatever depending on the ROM. I thought it might have been a data tower problem, but I had this problem in the Twin Cities, my local township, and throughout Chicago (vacation). All of those locations were supposed to be HSPA+ compatible, and worked prior to now.
To try and fix this, I've flashed my phone to all of my old backups, including my old stock, and data wouldn't work on any of them. I've reverted to MIUI, CM7, and Tmo 2.2.
This makes me think its either the radio (never messed with it before), the SIM card, or some hardware defect of some kind. I've been reading around, and apparently I might also have an APN problem. I've tried looking up how to fix these individually, but I don't want to screw up something that isn't broken. Thoughts, anyone? Currently I'm using MIUI latest, and I used rmk's RIL autopatcher for radio libraries. [Solved]
EDIT: Solved! For others experiencing data connection issues, check with a T-mobile person and ask about your plan.. Apparently they love to switch around plans, and forgot to enable data on my handset. Others have found they were given a different data plan, and needed a different APN. Also, if your plan is fine, Evilcuber was right that different APNs can solve data issues.

I think its an apn problem. Try searching (your carrier) apn settings on google and it will tell you what you need to set for username and password and other stuff

I tried multiple variations of T-mobile APN's, and none of them worked... Just found out my plan got switched, so it might be that also, (I still have unlimited data, messages, 500min voice). EDIT: I was sure the APN edit would work..Darn. Am I missing something here..?

just out of curiosity, is it typical for things to screw up like this when you switch your plan around? i'm thinking of increasing the minutes on my plan and i don't really want to encounter any roadblocks like this with my phone running g-lite.
sorry i couldn't offer any insight into your problem though.
Problem is solved anyways, bro. You should be fine changing plan. Just double-check.

Hello there. If you're gonna change your plan, minutes, data, messages, whatever, see if you can do it at a store. That way you can see what they've changed. I also found out that if they switch up your data and DO enable it, you'll get a message saying they changed it.
I think you'll be fine adding more minutes, just make sure they add the unlimited data, as its optional when switching plans now.
I've got a two part question for some issues I'd like to address while on 4G (some I've called Sprint about, others I know you guys will have the answer since I'm rooted) that I hope to resolve.
My issues with Sprint is that if I'm on 3G and looking at images via websites, pics obviously load slower, but they're always nice and crisp. I notice that when I happen to be on 4G and go look at images, suddenly they load super grainy. I spoke to someone else who is also on Sprint w/ an LTE 4G phone (not a Note II, something else) who experiences the exact same problem. I've called Sprint about it, but I get the usual run around saying they're addressing the issues, fixing towers, etc. When I first started getting 4G in my area about 3 months ago, it was BLAZING fast, connected the second I came off the freeway and stayed on strong. I realize over time that I'm sharing the same signal with others, but damn.
My issues that I'm hoping you guys can assist with is in regards to the phone staying connected to to 4G more via changing thresholds. As I id before, it was awesome. Now it's gotten to the point where I or the phone have to be near a window, or occasionally I can leave it on the top edge of my couch...but if I happen to handle the phone to answer a text messages, it'll often drop back into 3G. The problem is that I use my phone tethered to my laptop for watching TV....Top Gear, Family Guy, etc that I stream. On 4G it's great, but once it drops to 3G it turns into a buffering nightmare and some shows/sites can't handle jumping around for time frames, so lets say if I'm 15 min into a show, go into 3G and come back into 4G, the show never recovers and I've got no choice but to restart the show. I'm just curious if there's a way to change at what point/signal strength that the phone wants to swap back and forth and basically ask it to stay on 4G more often than not when I'm at home where I actually get 4G.
As for tethering, I'm a stock rooted ROM using TrevEMod tethering because the stock tethering app won't stay turned on, I'm assuming due to using the stock ROM. What I'm curious about is a way to have the phone automated in that once I plug it on, the tethering app turns itself on and then back off again once unplugged from a power cord. At one point I'd used some app where it had me enter parameters to do this, but it only worked to turn on the stock tethering app which won't work.
Bottom line is I'd like my phone to stay connected to 4G more often than not, turn on tethering when plugged in and turn it off when not.
as for the tethering, if you are running the stock deodexed rom, there is a mod you can flash to make the native hotspot work then you will be able to use Tasker or however you automate it turning on. if you are running stock odexed you could always flash stock deodexed, if you were intent enough on making it work.
here is the hotspot mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232553
I truly don't know if the stock ROM is odexed or deodexed, I just did a simple rooting procedure and nothing more so I could install a tethering app. Maybe I'm just being naive, but coming from my Epic days where I rooted, ROM'd, kernal'd, OC'd, etc days where I removed tons of apps, added others, etc I never was able to get battery stats/calibration to work correctly, which in turn wrecked havoc on that phone...phone would get super laggy, bog and stumble, then I'd reset the phone and I'd go from 20% battery life to 3%, then realize why the phone was freaking out. Now that I've got this Note II, it works great, I've never felt the need to OC or anything (I wouldn't mind removing stock apps but the SDX Stock App Removal Tool doesn't work), so I'm kinda hesitant in flashing any sort of ROM for fear of reliving past experiences...right now the phone simply works great, I'd just like a few simple features. Any input to sway my decision?
i hear ya, i too like a nice stable setup with everything working. your system is probably odexed if al you did was root, but if you have a file explorer app, when you go into /system/app, you will see each .apk also has an associated .odex file. the deodexed rom has the odex part added back into the apk, but otherwise is exactly the same, no tweaks or anything, every bit as stable, and with nothing removed, but it is easier to make mods for a deodexed rom, such as the hotspot mod!
the decision is yours. it is always a bit of work to flash a rom, but this is defintiely a way to keep the stabilty and reliability, and have the hotspot working the way you want it to! the rom is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241930, if you choose to go this route. this is exactly my setup, with the hotspot mod, and it runs great.
I'll read the thread, thanks for the link. Any suggestions for something that will enable the tethering app automatically based on being plugged in, and I've had no luck finding anything in regards to people changing thresholds for the 4G connectivity.

no problem. the app Tasker from the market does things like that, i think it costs a few bucks but it's well worth it. and perhaps there are others.
for the 4G thing, i don't see any setting for that. there are other people who know a lot more about network stuff than i do. there might be a dialer code menu where you can set to receive LTE only, but sorry i can't be of more help there. good luck and have fun!

In HDR menu there is a LTE only mode..... beware you wont receive calls or texts so if you have google voice set up then perfect
yeah, first thing i accomplished successfully tho not without a lot of wiping an rewiping and installing and reinstalling stuff, was unlocking the phone, then i put in the aio and it did it's thing on it's own and connected wonderfully. first time trying to go back to tmob, it started this misconnection issue. it's basically intermittent closer to non operational, tho i did get a random text tonight from a friend i was unable to respond to, because im like kinda connected for a sec, sometimes i'll see the opposing 4g arrows working in the notification area, but not long enough to get info set in the apn settings, you know where i'm talking about. half of those settings work only when you have a signal, for ex. i do the manual part correctly, hit the save apn button ... nothing saves, nothing happens better after that.
i bet you i need to update that radio huh? just tried to flash a newer rom and it said no because my radio was too old. i could have sworn my stock rom, which is supposed to be the latest... which maybe was old right? its in the threads here, first stock you'll find. probably that rom was cool with the uvle1... confusing stuff. okay, til someone answers otherwise i'm just gonna keep trying to update this radio. i guess it is only good now for unlocking...
okay, so i just flashed jedi mind trick which updated the radio, but the stock rom didn't. so does that mean that some roms will not touch the radio while others will? and what was wrong with the radio before? was it made to work only for the associated older versions of android?
Noob post incoming. I did my best to search around and didn't find much. Hate creating a new thread but was locked out from posting in CM dev thread for obvious reasons. Not too experienced in the world of root, so forgive my ignorance. This will hopefully be a quick question:
I've tried running the CM nightlies for the last two days on my T-Mobile M8, and the only big problem is a complete lack of cell data. It displays that I have bars, and while it cuts in and out often (which I expect), I can't get a drop of data to go through. Even at full bars.
I've seen a few people mention connection issues, but didn't see anyone saying anything about a complete lack of cell data. I'd normally just chalk it up to being a nightly build issue, but since I can't find it mentioned elsewhere, I'm wondering if maybe I'm just doing something wrong. If not, no worries, but I'd be stoked if I can run it as a daily at the moment.
Anyone have any advice on what I might be doing wrong, or how I can resolve it?
Edit:
Chrome itself displays error that "Wi-Fi and mobile data are turned off" when only wifi is turned off.
I just tested calling and SMS and both are working with Wi-Fi off. So obviously I'm maintaining some type of radio connection.
Thanks a ton in advance!
New nightly. Same problems.
Bump.
@thefunkyprimer
I just got your PM. Unfortunately I know nothing about T-Mobile and/or why you would be having the issues. What have you tried? Switching APNs? Switching from 3G to 4G? I also haven't run CM longer than five minutes in a couple years. So I'm not much use in terms of running it personally.
Try my ROM and see if data works for you. That's pretty much all I got for you at the moment. But if you did try my ROM and data works, that might be a starting point. Make sure to fully wipe your device prior to flashing.
