How to update? - Desire General

Hey i want to ask if i buy a uk htc desire phone and want to update it from us how can i do it?
I ask becuz my friend said that i won't be able to update if i buy the uk desire phone if i live in the us.
thanks

I am going to go out on a limb and say you can update anywhere. What will differ is the frequency of the updates depending on which ROM is on the device. For example if you have a device with a T-Mobile UK then you will have to wait for them to provide updates. I am there is a way to demand and load a generic ROM.

if the device is unlocked, .. dont think there is an IP Address restriction for updating, ... i think what it checks is your IMEI, if it unlocked and unbranded than you should get that update anywhere in the world (using the WiFi, 3G, ... etc of course).
dont have the device right now to check for sure though

Why?! - Orange Network Lock when Radio Upgraded

Hi,
I was wondering if some of the smart folks at xda could answer this question:
What have Orange UK done to their sims/phones that cause a network lock when you upgrade the radio?
I know you can just flash an older radio and everything will be fine but I don't understand WHY there is an issue when the radio is upgraded.
Anyway, looks like I'm unlucky, I tried to get an unlock code for my desire but have found that my IMEI doesn't exist in the database the guy was using (he told me that there would be a db update in a few days and refunded my money, decent guy!)
Did you update the radio and keep orange rom? or update radio and also change rom

I have flashed an unbranded rom (currently running the modaco rom) and I want to upgrade my radio but everyone who bought their phone from orange seems to get a network locked message when they upgrade their radio to the latest version.

Not sure why this happens, but I would advise you not to upgrade to the latest radio (32.37.00.32U_4.06.00.16_2) if you are sim-locked to Orange. The solution would be to have the phone unlocked allowing you to flash the radio and not have the Network Locked message appearing.
When you tried and failed to have it unlocked, was this directly via Orange themselves?
Try this company - http://www.mobileunlocked.co.uk/HTC/Desire/
Seem to be pretty efficient and provide the unlock code within 30 mins, not a bad price either.
Here are some reviews about them: http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews136584.html
I've actually tried that company and two others, every one of them has said that my IMEI number does not appear in the database. I just got the phone on Thursday, could that be the reason it doesn't seem to exist in the databases yet?
I think so... because it's probably a newer version of the Desire, HTC's databases (where the code is requested from) might not be updated yet.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Regarding the unlocking - i had the same issue, desire 2 weeks old orange. Found a thread on xda mentioning an ebay unlocker - took the plunge, 30 mins 8.99!! after 3 other sites failed with database excuse! ebay item: 300434867258
I would never have dreamed of trusting an ebay unlocker, but have to eat my words, this one cheap, quick and pleasant!
I unlocked, made goldcard, ran generic rom 1.15, setup wifi, allowed update to install - all good no wifi issue.
Unfortunately that is the very ebayer that I tried, he did refund me my money really quickly though, I just hope my code gets into a database soon
Does orange have to tell HTC that they have sold the phone so it gets into their database, I would have thought that it would be in the database as soon as it left the factory!?
I used unlock-systems.com after another vendor couldn't provide my code and refused to give me a refund. Paypal refused to give me a refund too so I'll be avoiding those cowboys in future.

(Q) Remove Simelock

I wanted to know if it is possible to remove the simlock form a T-Mobile (Austria) HTC Desire on your own.
Or do I need to use a online unlocker like htccode.com
I have read that its easier or cheaper when you have an older device because the unlock codes are well known.
You could contanct your carrier directly and ask them for it, they should give it to you although they might ask a small fee for giving you the code ... same as using an online unlocking site ... as the desire has been around for a while now the price shouldnt be too steep ... the only factor that you might want to consider is how long you have had the device, some carriers will only provide the unlock code after a certain period of time. I am not sure what t-mobile policy is concerning this.
Its always worth a try contacting your carrier first before you attempt anything else.
normaly they just unlock it after a year or so but then its almost for free
maybe its possible to ask another provider for unlock?
isn't it possible to flash the radio from a lockfree device???
You can flash another radio but i dont think that would remove simlock otherwise the need for sites to provide unlock codes wouldnt be there as everyone would just be able to root and flash another rom and then one of the newer radios that get released and are provided here on xda.
I know that there is a radio s-off tool over at the DHD forum that manages to obtain sim-unlock ... but they dont flash a new radio to do this and as far as i am aware this isnt possible yet for the desire.
I am by no means an expert and i would be more than happy if flashing a unlocked radio would provide sim-unlock! Hopefully there is someone in the forum that has more insight than me into this
another method would be to get access to the unlock codes
hope there is a way to onlock it somehow
Here in the uk you can get the simunlock code for £20 from the carrier. Orange (who recently merged with tmobile) still asks for £20 for older phones (i wanted an unlock code for the original HTC Touch and HTC Touch HD and they told me it was £20 for each handset so i told them to piss off!). Try getting a code online (it usually cheaper than getting one from your carrier + you get one nearly instantly, where'as carriers have to contact HTC for one so it can pottentially take longer) if that doesnt work for you contact your carrier. Also note that if you have a custom rom/rooted you may encouter problems like I have (I have a code but cant use it and am looking for the original orange ruu which doesnt exist)
So is it possible to unlock with the stock rom, and then flash anotherone? or do i have to stick with the stock branded rom????

Once unlocked you should be able to flash any rom..Rom shouldnt be involved at all
Nice, the desire from t-mobile would cost 94€ plus 20-40€ for online unlocking. still sounds like a cheap htc desire ^^
guess its the same unlocking thing with desire hd.

Sounds good!
The phone being sim-locked has no effect on flashing custom roms etc.
Hence unlocking the phone will make no difference!

Oops sorry!
My previous post wasnt neccesary

[Q]How do i know if my phone is unbranded[Q]

As above, how do I know?
I bought the phone from TMobile Direct UK, I got it pretty much the day it was released, it shows no signs of Tmobile branding but how can i be certain?
I also have downloaded the zip file of android 2.3 if i update manually will the phone be able to pick up signal despite the OTA not being officially released in the UK yet?
Sorry for the noob questions!
if you try and flash the gingerbread RUU and it works then you are not branded and yes you will still get signal
Do i need root access to achieve this? and what are the chances of making my phone a paper weight?
i was very tempted to do it, yesterday. I booted into recovery and decided i'd wait for more info from HTC who seem to be treating us Uk folk as second class citizens
You don't need root, If you install with the RUU it will either work or it wont, you won't brick your phone, just plug ur phone into ur pc, you need to have htc sync and/or android sdk installed, select htc sync from the pop up message on ur phone and run the RUU
I think i'm too noob and should probly wait for HTC!
you might aswell tbh, gingerbread is being pushed to random phones as we speak, shouldn't be long till everyone gets the ota
yea i know, i'm just concerned that my phone might be branded and i have to wait for tmobile which could be significant wait.
and franky with all the bugs in this version of FroYo it's getting quite irritating.

Actually if you read the threads it seems branded phones are getting the update first.
To answer your original question, when you turn the phone on (from off), do you get a T-mobile screen? The answer is the answer, as a guide.
Nope i don't, i just get a HTC Splash screen.
I tried to insert another sim however (vodafone uk) and it asked me for some sort of 8 digit code.
Could be either SIM lock (the SIM card itself is locked) or the phone is locked to your network (doesn't have to be branded to be network locked).
Check the software number (settings -> about phone -> Software Information) on the phone.
Mine Desire HD with Android 2.2.1 is 1.72.405.3 and doesn't have any T-Mobile splash screen interestingly was primed to connect to t-mobile as there was a little piece of paper which said at the network selection screen choose next despite NO network being selected and T-Mobile not being one of those in the list?
Anyway I believe the 405 bit indicates its an htc (i.e. unbranded) build. The Vodafone uk builds have 161 here instead and my wifes desire that does have a t-mobile splash screen shows software version 2.12.110.4 with android 2.2 installed

How can I update firmware?

Hello,
I live in Korea and not an AT&T carrier user. So, I have never received AT&T's OTA.
I tried to connect my Galaxy S7 Active to Samsung Smart Switch, but Samsung Smart Switch says my phone's firmware is the newest version.
My phone's baseband version is G891AUCU1APE7, and build number is MMB29M.G891AUCU1APE7.
Am I unable to update my phone forever?
I want to update my phone's firmware.
I desperately need your help...
Thank you.
ATT only updates there phones OTA... you have to be on the att network to get it to update.

Given that they allow unlocking of the device, that is a ridiculous policy. I can only hope that someone will be able to download the image so that we can use odin.
looking on the S6 Active thread, they find the update downloads on AT&T site, not sure how ?? you can easily find out WHAT update is the newest ..
then either flash via Odin, or 'side' load it ...
but i couldnt find out how they were getting the links from AT&T site to download direct ..
Updating outside USA
in order to update this device outside of USA you should get a At&t SIM card (whit active account), put and seek for updates and will work, I made it a couple of hours and I was able to update.....All this thanks to a friend who lives in Usa and came to visit my country and lend his sim card to do the test ...
Do AT&T have such things as pre-paid sim cards? And could I activate one outside of the USA?

It exists and is called GoPhone, only you would have to do it through some friend or trustworthy person who lives in the USA and can buy it and send it to your country ... is what I will do for the next updates
(Was a scam site, sorry)
now we have these phones rooted, could people in the US with a OTA updates, pull /dump the updates
for us people outside US to flash via Odin ? ...
I'm looking into purchasing this device but have second thoughts due to firmware update availability (not to mention custom ROM support).
Anyway, related to the topic above, I have an AT&T prepaid GO Phone SIM but it is already deactivated/expired. Can I use this old prepaid SIM to update the device firmware outside US?
Side question, what is the difference between SM-G891 and SM-G891A? I see it often when looking for this device.
Thanks.

Xperia XA2 with Lineage and Verizon

Hi all, I wonder if anyone knowledgeable out there could assist?
I am in the UK and have bought a manufacturer-refurbished unlocked Xperia XA2 phone.
A friend of mine is in rural USA and can only use the Verizon network.
I am aware that Verizon only allow certain phones for use on their network and I discovered that the XA2 was now on their list of officially acceptable phones
So here is my question. I intend to install lineageos on this phone which of course will require unlocking the bootloader.
If I go ahead and put lineage on having unlocked the bootloader, will this phone still work on Verizon? I will be posting the phone to my friend and the last thing I want is for the phone to refuse to play with Verizon once he switches it on.
Can anyone advise of anything I need to be aware of before proceeding, or is my plan good?
Thanks!!

Hi
If you just want to make it usable with Verizon, you don't need to put lineage, you just need to download flashtool and flash US's firmware, in order to make it 99% compatible.
If u want to put lineage, knowing that it isn't an official firmware, be aware that it may work as it may not work. 90% it will work, because lineage is made in order to remove brand limits, but...
Do what you want, but be aware that there are some things that may not work.
Here in Italy even if a phone is brandized (like Vodafone, etc.) you are still able to use it with other operators, and if you want to debrand it, it is just in order to remove operator's apps or animations (e.g. Vodafone boot animation), to get stock Sony ones. I don't know what changes in the US or in the UK.

F.
Hi, thanks for the reply - just for clarity, my enquiry is on a network level - ie, will verizon block a phone simply because it has lineage on it. I am very familiar with modding and how lineage affects the phone so that is not what I need to know.. Since verizon are finicky about which models are usable with their network in the USA, my question is really an extension of that - do they block phones (which work fine with stock) running a non-stock rom (eg based on the fact they detect an unlocked bootloader). Want to put lineage on for all the good reasons to put lineage on - notably bloatware removal etc etc. Is there anyone out there running lineage on verizon in the USA?
