Using it in Japan ? - Desire General

I'm probably going to spend a year in Japan next year and I'd like to know if i'll be able to use my Desire there.
I've heard it doesn't work on every network and since i have no clue what they use there...
Thank you

Tocuh pro 2 inner battle

i am in biggest battle of my life! heres the issue. im very interested in buying the touch pro 2 and as of right now am without a phone since i sold my htc fuze. now, the touch pro 2 looks good but i see its coming out to the Americas. now the only difference i see is the 3g and let me add that i have tmobile and dont have internet on my phone so 3g really isnt much of a factor. the tmobile version really dosent look that great compared to the original chrome version. and another issue....the htc hero.. in your opinions what would be my best choice. buy the phone now? euro version? wait till a branded version comes out but apart from 3g what else would be better with that? or wait till the htc hero comes out? another detail money isn't the issue in any of this Lol
I feel your pain...
I just went throught the same thing... I'm on ATT... see my post... I pulled the trigger on the Touch Pro 2... it wouldn't run on 3G... it didn't come with Voice Command... those two are deal killers for me... I use heavy data apps on my phone... I can't go back to 2G just for the sake of having the phone. I'll wait until ATT branded phone comes out... in the meantime (when I get my money back) I'm going to get a Apple I-Phone... If you are not heavy into speed.. then ok, if so, dont do it... its a horrible let down. the people selling the phone don't tell you the deal breaking details, they hope you will just live with it... NOT ME.. Len
TP2 is 3G in the UK, how come T-Mobile have removed it for the US?

If this is the biggest battle of your life, you've had a very easy life so far!
one benefit of buying it local is getting hardware issues fixed under warranty...
Before I purchased the TP2 I realised it wasnt going to be released in Australia for a while. I also realised that if I wanted the phone now, I'd need to order from overseas. It crossed my mind: what if there are issues with the phone. I dismissed those after I realised I had owned several HTC phones in the past and they were all fine.
I found myself with a faulty screen after getting my TP2 from Singapore. I contacted HTC, and its going to cost about 10% of the device's cost to send it off for repair via FedEx!
I'm a bit hesitant to send the thing off. I dunno how long I can live without it!

omg seriously?? have you even TRIED to look around this forum and read some of the posts?
THE EUROPEAN MODEL OF THE TOUCH PRO 2 DOES NOT HAVE THE NECESSARY BANDS TO SUPPORT 3G IN THE US.
ALL OF THE US CARRIERS WILL BE GETTING THEIR OWN RESPECTIVE MODEL OF THE TP2, WITH T-MO PROBABLY BEING THE FIRST. THEIRS WILL BE COMING OUT AROUND MID-AUGUST. AUGUST 12.
it's not that they removed it. they never made a European model that supported US 3G in the first place.
next time, before you ask a question like that, READ. PLEASE.

Softbank HTC desire

Okay, a couple of stupid questions.
1) Does anyone know if Softbank will be using the 850/2100 3G desire like the Telstra version or the "normal" 1900/2100 3G version.
2) I plan on buying the Softbank version as I live in Japan and am getting tired of my iPhone 3GS and it's limitations (even with jailbreaking it). If no one knows what bands the Softbank version runs is it possible to check easily when I have the phone (should be out Tuesday)?
Thank you in advance for the help.
Just a thought, if you live there, just go to the nearest softbank shop and ask?
I live in japan but unfortunately I do not speak Japanese nor do the English speaking staff on the military base know anything more then "It is coming out soon. We do not know the price yet."
Thank you anyway though.
So, I went to their site to check it out.
Guess what, the site don't even mention about which bands they are using, yay... not.
Neither price for that matter...
Kinda sucky regarding on the info that softbank...
Aye, the info softbank releases sucks, as I said the staff at their shop does not even know the price or the plans available for it. They are not even sure when they will recieve a shipment (though the web site says 27 April that may not be the case for this shop).
I guess the only way to really tell would be to get one and open it? Or would I be able to use the baseband version number to tell?
And if I have to open it would someone with a non-softbank one be willing to break their warranty and open theirs? I am guessing not this soon
Again thank you.
Hey before you go "Tis time to crack open the me brand new phone!" on Desire, can't you shoot off a mail to HTC Japan and ask?
If someone, they of all ppl should know imo.
Ah, yes, I forgot that HTC Japan would very likely know what is going on, Thanks mate.
Any time dude
I sent HTC an email about the frequency bands used by the saftbank X06HT useing their website. I will post their reply, incase anyone else is curious.
As a side note, I forgot to mention softbank uses the 2100 frequency for their connection (No GSM, only 3G here) so that is why I was wondering since either phone will work but only the Ausie on will work when I return to the US in about a year.
Getting mine on Tuesday - The shop said they would have stock, but maybe not in the Morning. Glad I was the first to reserve mine on the 1st.
I did not notice the new phone until after the 15th so I could not reserve one but I am hoping I can get one before the 1st.
Forgot to mention, the details for the phone are on the HTC Japan website. Here are the supported channels/frequencies.
国内 W-CDMA方式
海外 W-CDMA方式、GSM方式(850/900/1,800/1,900MHz
W-CDMA is 3G not a specific frequency though if I am reading what I have found online correctly.
I'll be in Japan on Friday for 3 weeks, I'd appreciate if someone finds a good clear silicone case for the Desire on sale over there and post about it here. Thanks
Well. HTC sent me an email back, telling me contact softbank. It is a mute point now because if you did not order the phone before 22 April it will be delayed until end of may . I think I will just order a Google Nexus One and have my mom ship it to me. Thank you all for the help.

As I know,X06ht is available from Softbank Store for a user who sign a new contract with Softbank
I spoke with them yesterday. People who didn't reserve their phone early enough (~1st week June) will have to wait until the end of May to get theirs.
Also, I had a really hard time finding anything to protect the phone with. They have the screen protectors which is good, but no cases. I went for a generic pouch for the time being.

will this version be different from the U.S. version (considering the U.S. will get the HSPA+ version) ? Also, are they're any other negatives since its a Europe version of the phone most likely.. like does it not update correctly over here or is modding the phone in the future different? thank you! I'm picking it up in the city tomorrow and just wanted to know first before using it on T-mobile 4G, the site im getting it from is mobile city online . com .. sorry im not allowed to post links on here yet
im using an imported one on tmo.. you will get 3g hspa plus just foine.. depending on coverage of course. also you will get updates as well. dont worry works 100 percent

My Imported Tmo phone works just fine on AT&T (just changed my APN settings is all)
You will be able to root it just fine. There's no way to tell now whether or not the US version will be different (or how) because it doesn't exist right now

$800?! Mine was $690 shipped from the UK...and it came 31 hours after I ordered it (no joke). Just order from Handtec.
Also, don't worry about "bricking" the phone. If you start messing with it, you will eventually brick it, no matter what phone it is. It's part of the learning process. I've had 13 Android devices (two of which were not originally running Android), and I've worked on a bunch more.....I'm not sure it's possible to TRULY brick an Android phone. I came close once, and it took a perfect storm of a bootlooping, non-charging phone, and a near-dead battery.

[Q] HTC One X on Softbank (Japan)

Hello,
So I gave Softbank a chance to bring a good international handset but they are just too involved with Apple they dont have much interest in Android. 2012 summer line up is a joke.
So I decided to buy an unlocked HTC One X. Unfortuntely I need to be in Softbank because all my family is in Softbank. Also I'm a little chicken when it comes to changing APNs and all that unofficially and running the risk of paying a lot of money for data.
So I called Softbank and asked them about getting their SIM for my own handset. The rep was constantly saying that they dont recommend it and I should first bring my handset to them to check. I know they will not pass HOX because its micro sim. Softbank does not support micro sim on this service.
And now I'm stuck with two options:
1) Use my existing silver SIM contract (not pre-paid)
2) MNP to BMobile
I want to ask you guys if any of you have just plugged your SIM (after cutting it) to HOX and it worked? I know 3G data will not work but voice and SMS?
Also, if I do not put a APN and just disable 3G data, would the phone work as normal? I do not want 3G as I'm mostly in a wifi area and I carry a WiMax when I go out.
I would appreacite any information on HOX on Softbank.
Thank you.
I gave my sim card the chop-chop and It's working fine inside the HOX. Go for it man, no problems at all as long as you know where to cut.

I just got my one x today. It's the international unlocked version. I just cut my sim card and put it in and it works perfectly. Don't worry just cut your sim and if you don't need wifi then disable mobile network, it will save you some battery as well.
Thanks Asavva.
If you dont mind can you give me some more details? As where you bought the phone (i'm going to buy from Expansys), and if you changed the APN settings etc.?
Also did you insert a black iphone sim or a normal silver sim?
Appreciate the information
Thank you Barondebxi.
Have you been having any issues with the phone? Wifi, screen?

No problem man. I've had the phone for 5 hours now ( it came from FedEx this afternoon here in the US), no issues at all. It's a very good looking phone. Wifi works very well, screen is AMAZING! I've already installed 2 updates. My phone was on 1.26, then I installed 1.28 and now 1.29.
Thank you.
I'm evry worried after reading all the issues HOX is said to have: wifi, screen flickering, battery heating, scratches on the screen, etc.
But I just cant make up my mind to go for GS3.. this phone is just too gorgeous..

Well it's funny cause for me, I had the galaxy s 3 preordered since yesterday morning. But they have delays because the supply is short so I bought the one x and got it delivered in 1 day. BUT personally I'm still going to buy the Galaxy S3, itt will be my main phone and this one will be my back up phone. Not to say it isn't as good but I'm more of a Samsung guy I guess. Nevertheless, this HTC one x is a beast! It's reallly the best thing HTC as ever released without a doubt.
Thank you Barondebxi.
I dont have a preference to either, its just that HOX looks better and I like the build than the GS3 plastic frame.
But I'm gonna give it a couple of weeks and see. Its very important that wifi works. Else I have no use from the phone. If the issues seems to persist I might as well go with a GS3.

Either phone you choose you will be happy. But if you're afraid of running into some issues, I think the S3 is a better choice right now. But both are epic phones. Ok I'm going to bed. Take care!
I completely agree, SoftBank's Summer 2012 line-up was not worth waiting for. As of now, I live in Japan, but don't have a Japanese phone and was planning on going with a Galaxy S3 whenever docomo wants to release it... however, I do believe I would like the One X more. Are you certain that if I bought the international version, that it would not work with SoftBank's 3G?
Yes. Softbanks 2012 line up was crap. Just some Sharp phones.
I was originally planning on MNP'ing to Docomo and get a GS3. With the MNP discount it'd been a good deal.
But since my family are on Softbank it'd be cheaper for me to be in SB. Also I'm liking HOX more than GS3. It's one sexy phone. GS3 is more like a slightly modified GN and I'm hating "prebble blue".. what were they thinking!? And I'm not a white phone person.
I\m pretty certain that international unlocked HOX will work on SB, but you will need to have a SIM. SB will not provide you with a SIM for HOX, unless you buy a pre-paid version and use that SIM. I have seen on web that HOX works with SB network, but for 3G data you wil need to find the APN details. The one on the web are for iphone (black sim). I think the APNs are different for silver SIM. I also asked from Expansys and they said HOX works on Softbank, but I cannot guarantee whether they actually know it for a fact. But there is no reason it would not as it supports WCDMA (this will not work on AU though). Let me know if you go for it.

Your first paragraph consists of my exact thoughts and plans, although I have no family here, it seems like my co-workers use either docomo or SoftBank. The only way I'd go with SoftBank however is if 3G on the One X works with their network.
I'm hoping one of my friends still has his SoftBank iPhone microSIM card. If he does, I'm going to ask him to mail it to me, then buy the One X from Amazon and see if it works. According to Wikipedia, SoftBank runs on 1500/2100... the 1500 band that the One X doesn't seem to support. What are your thoughts on that?
Have a look at these links Habbit.
http://www.maru-kajiri.com/2012/04/htc-one-x-softbanksim.html
http://www.maru-kajiri.com/2012/04/htc-one-x.html
I highly doubt HOX will not work on SB network. I use a Desire from SB now and the radio is the same as HOX. I doubt SB changed the baseband of HTC phones. And if the SB iPhone SIM works on HOX, there is no reason for it not to work on HOX. I doubt the frequencies are different for iPhone (black SIM) and other (real smartphones (silver SIM).
BTW, why would you buy from Amazon (Amazon Japan I suppose)? They are little expensive than Expansys and also Expansys offers extended warranty. I'm not sure the warranty of when you buy from Amazon (because I dont think its directly sold from Amazon Japan). I thought if I buy from Exapansys it'll be easier to deal with warranty and other issues (basically because my Japanese is not good).
Also, as difficult as it is, I;m going to hold off buying HOX for couple of weeks, because of the Wifi issues its been having. I'm gonna wait till Expansys get new stocks and also see how these issues turn up in next few weeks.
Actually I was going to get it from Amazon US (even cheaper than Expansys) and either have my mom ship it to me, or have my co-worker bring it back when he takes a business trip to Colorado. Haha
Are the WiFi issues that widespread?
Yes it is. Particularly with earlier models. Worst, it could be well be a hardware issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688538&page=2
Interesting... I would really rather have the One X over the Galaxy S3, but that issue could be pretty annoying. How do you discover when Expansys receives new shipments of One X's?
I cut my Softbank silver SIM into Micro.
Enter open.softbank.ne.jp setting in APN.
Get 3G/H, SMS (both sending/receiving), Voice all great.
But I used WiFi most of the time cuz I dont wanna get a huge Data bill from Softbank. Heard so many stories about rumors on the forum.
Still working on MMS setting.

Thank you very much BrianInfo.
Could you please give me some more info regarding the phone.
1) I'm also very worried about getting a huge bill and I want 3G data disabled. So what if I dont put the APN address and leave it blank? Will voice/SMS still work?
2) Can you also share how you bought the phone? and also its HW version number. I'm planning on buying through Expansys but seem there service is not that good.
3) Do you have any wifi issues with the phone?
THank you very much.
How would I go about getting the SoftBank Unlimited Data (Flat-Rate?) plan if I have neither SoftBank service nor a microSIM? Should I have one of my co-workers say they broke their microSIM card or something and ask SoftBank for a replacement for me to use, or should I sign up for a cheap phone and then change my plan after I sign my contract?

[Q] DInc2 usage in Africa

Greetings folks,
I have a couple questions regarding international use of our device. Pardon me if they've been answered before.. I've tried my best to comb through other threads.
I was accepted into the US Peace Corps and subsequently nominated for an assignment with a tentative deployment for June, 2013 in Africa. They don't give a specific country until the invitation is final, but I'm still trying to get some research done now.
Obviously I'll be telling big red "smell ya later!" before I go which means I'll be looking into a local provider once I'm on the ground. At this point, is it as simple as replacing the simcard? Does it matter if the phone is rooted? I see plenty of global ROMs in the dev section, which is great to see.
Finally, is there a way to use our device as wifi only? I foresee picking up and using cheap flip-phone and just keeping the DInc2 for email, music, camera, etc.
Best Regards
yes you can airways use your phone on Wi-Fi add long as tgeres a hotspot, call verizon and get the unlock code before you tell them to suck an egg then insert new SIM, phone does not need to be rooted

This is very helpful advice, thank you :good:
If you end up using it for WiFi only, I would suggest putting it in airplane mode then turning on WiFi. This will keep the phone from searching for service and only have WiFi running.... Much better on the battery ... Good luck in your endeavor
Awesome thanks for the tip CS, I bet that coupled with an extended battery should last at least 2 weeks
First option would be to find a data plan if possible, but that's a big if. Nice to know I can keep using this thing as a mobile pc if not.

Looks like I'll be moving from one big red V to another. I finally received my invitation to serve and have received an assignment for the small mountain kingdom of Lesotho, Africa. Attached is the coverage map.
Vodacom is the main provider in the nation. There's one other but they aren't as developed. I'll be using EDGE/WiMax for the most part with some limited 3G in the main cities. Better than nothing and certainly more than I was expecting in a 3rd world mountain country where the populace lives on an average of $1.25/day.
The loyal vivow shall be making the trip with me. With limited electricity infrastructure, the battery savings with CM7 are going to be crucial!
