htc news widget not updating? - Desire General

So i have the htc news widget set to the bbc news feed and the auto refresh set to every 30 minutes (also tried manual-only as well but more on that later)
anyway, if left alone and set to every 30 minutes, it doesn't actually ever update. you have to go into the actual program, into the feed, then menu -> refresh, and all of a sudden bam, updated.
if you press the bottom border of the widget (which FYI, refreshes for you. applies to twitter and friendstream too). it does nothing at all either.
if i set it to manual, it also doesn't actually refresh from pressing the bottom (it says refreshing, but nothing new comes up). you still have to go into the actual feed and refresh in there.
anybody elses doing this?
its a bit annoying. the news app is so sexy looking, but if its not going to update automatically, or with a single button, its not worth it

Can just press the bar at the bottom of the widget to manually update. But true it doesnt seem to do it automatically.

like i said, pressing the bar doesn't actually do anything.
it will say "updating", then the time will change to whatever the current time is, as if its updated
but it wont actually get any new stories...even if they are definitely there to get

Exact same issue here.

oh wow
the problem is that they dont seem to be arranged in order of newest to oldest
they seem like, totally arbitrarily arranged, comparing it to the actual rss feed.
the latest 50 (or whatever) items are on there, they're just in any old order
useful ¬_¬

Yeah i noticed that.. keep getting old articles pop up!

okay actually
looks like they're in reverse order and jumbled a bit
newer ones generally go to the bottom (wtf?) and older ones generally go to the top
how useful

Having a lot of problems with the widgets not updating on mine : news, weather and even mail (hotmail account not the gmail one). WiFi may have been behind the mail problem which I had this morning - need to check more
I ended up getting rid of the standard htc news one and using a BBC widget (it was the only stream I used on it anyway). You only get one story as its not a full page one but at a touch you get the full set of headlines and then at another touch an instant link to the web page. Thinks its just called BBC News

I know these posts are old but i'm bored!
If you have a 'task manager' installed make sure it's not stopping these updating functions by default.

The only way to get the News widget to sync (2.2) is to do a factory reset. It's true, I've done it.

what is good news widget choice for us with LAUNCHER PRO launcher/home?

Anyone found a way to fix it yet?
Mine (on a Desire z, granted) does no updating at all, if i try to manualy update, it shows updating.. for a few seconds, then nothing, just show the old date that I managed to get updates on.

Same with the Weather widget
Since a week, I can't get any weather updates anymore (neither automatic nor manual), I just get 'Weather Data unavailable' after a few seconds.

Had the same problem ... shutting down and taking out the battery helps.
Maybe try setting it to 30mins auto-update in case manual update shouldn't work.
These tiny fellows behave like notebooks, somehow

I think you must use rom office

Tilt 2 Clock issue?

Just received my phone today. I toyed around with the phone and I noticed everytime I select something : task manager, program, volume. When the phone returns to the home screen the clock shows a time of 6:24 then it flips to the correct time. I had the Original Tilt and have never used Touchflo 3D. Is this the norm? It was cute the first time now it's aggrevating.
PS- I'm running stock rom.
Yep it's my location time running behind your normal clock.
I noticed the same thing too. The clock appears to start an hour behind and then flips to the correct time.
Its slightly annoying. =/
Happens on the stock AT&T rom. Don't know if it happens on other ROMs.

Ok you lost me. Can you explain?
Actually, mine starts 1:02:00 behind, then it switches to my current time. So I see the hour flip once and the minute flip twice. If you want to recreate this, just tap the notifications up top, close them, and then you'll see the time change. It's as if ATT wanted the clock to flip once when changing focus to it...
im using the tilt with a cooked rom and i have the same "issue. mildly annoying; would be nice to get rid of it
Unfortunately, it's working as designed. I believe it's supposed to be a "coolness" feature of the clock flipping everytime you go to the page.
I'm not sure I agree - you can see the behavior with the digital clock on device lock as well. There, it's not so cool. It really looks like it's doing something wrong.
Anyone know where to set 'my location' if you've gotten rid of TF3D?
me too
I noticed that the first day I got it on the Wednesday. I agree it is annoying and would like to prevent it if possible. I will keep looking to see if anyone comes up with a fix.
The other thing that I have noticed is that the SMS and or Email will just pop up for no apparent reason. I have it set to check my Email accounts every 15 minutes but I dont think it is on that time frame. It seems fairly random. Let me know if anyone else has noticed this that way I can see if it is something I have installed causing the problem.
Thanks, Kevin

It's the Time Zone Auto Fix package that is causing it...Just the way HTC is keeping your time accurate. Try disabling auto time check.
BG4 all also fixes it
Background For All includes a couple of flip clocks (clear and white) and also "fixes" this behavior. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=572166

Assuming you meant the settings under 'Phone', this had no effect for me. Still flips. Going to try the Background 4 All & Flip Clock next. Thanks
The time between what's first shown and what it is flipped to / skipped to is about 75 minutes apart (I caught it enough times to see it happen). It's a very odd time to be off / different...
I've got this issue too, and I'm running the stock att rom for now. I agree, very irritating. I thought something was wrong with my phone until I found this thread.
It appears that the time is when I last looked at my phone, as if it's cached (either the time or what seems more likely - the screen) and then is updated and refreshed. I wonder if there's a way to disable this caching, if that's what it actually is...
Probably handled in the LUA scripts as they describe how the page is rendered & what action do what. My suggestion is try to find the Home Page from one of the other TP versions. They don't have the flip clock.
EDIT: The newer Sense 2.1 TF3D does this as well as animated the whole BG with the Weather on the Home page anytime TF3D looses focus & gains focus back. This means when you go to a screen that is not TF3D. An example is just opening & closing the start menu on a 6.5 ROM.
A fix for the clock issue
Here is the manila file to fix the clock issue...To istall you must disable manila and then total commander this file into the windows directory of your phone

You're on to something there. Fixed the flip but screwed up the clock. Digits are all screwed up.
Any ideas?
Thanks for working on this.

SOLVED!! - TF3D Weather - change update frequency?

Anybody know if there's a way to change the update interval for the weather tab in TF3D? I'm not even sure how often mine currently updates; I've seen it say "Last Update" as old as 3 hours. I most often see it as 2 hours, so I assume it's updating right around every 3 hours or so.
I'd like to get it to update at least every hour, if not every half hour. The weather here in Minnesota can change pretty quickly!
Does anybody know how to do this?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
That's a mystery to me, too. Under menu/settings, you can check "Download weather automatically." But it doesn't say how often and I don't see where you can set or change the interval.
Any ROM with Sense/TF3D/Manila 2.5 allows specified update times for stock, weather, etc. There's a link in my signature to EnergyROM, and it has TF3D 2.5. The only downside to TF3D 2.5 is that it doesn't support landscape, and can be slightly laggy at times.
I'm using the Energy ROM, but it's the newest one which had Manila backed off to 2.1 (I think).
Is this still possible somehow without going to Manila 2.5?
Thanks,
Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems to me the “auto update” feature isn’t what most people think it should be. I’ve observed that if you have the auto update toggled on, it just means that every time you navigate to the weather tab and the weather is over 3 hrs old, your device will attempt to retrieve updated info. It doesn’t retrieve the updated info on a fixed regular interval in the background. You must navigate to the weather tab to trigger the update.
I do believe it automatically updates in the background after around 3 hours as well, because I have at times went to the weather tab and found it to be, for instance, 14 minutes old.
It's just annoying because I'm using a Today Screen that has the weather underneath the clock. so if it updates at, say, 7 in the morning and it's 31 degrees out, then I look again at 9:30am and the today screen still says 31 degrees, when its actually gotten up to, say, 42 degrees. That's what happened this morning...

Perhaps any registry edit?
Hope this can have a solution as it´s very annoying
Thanks,
Looking for a reg hack for this too .. seems odd that it does not update more often if you want it too .. i have unlimited bandwith so not a big deal to me ...
someone ? Help us ?
bump..
I too would like to know the answer to this, its annoying looking at it and haing o check the last time it updated Kinda defeats the purpose
I wonder i seem to not be seeing full animation on the home screen, just a short fade in. No Temperature either, any thoughts?
I am using Energy Rom with 2.1 on TILT2
After it auto updates, does it disconnect the data connection on it's own or do you have to manually disconnect it? I'm only worried that if the phone stays connected, it will drain my battery way to fast.
On mine the data connection stays on so i turn off auto update.

Try this instead: Download and install Advanced Config if you don't already have it (most cooked ROMs do), run it, tap the "Menu" softkey, then "More Settings" then "Connections". Then, check the "Disconnect after:" box, and set it to whatever you like (mine's set at 5 minutes). Tap "OK" at the bottom, exit Advanced Config, soft reset and the changes will take effect. In my experience, your battery life will be much better after doing this.

Got it working folks! I added the reg entry from a Sense 2.5 ROM, and can confirm that I've got it auto updating weather every half hour!!
Create this DWord entry in the following key:
HKCU\Software\HTC\Manila\
Dword Name:
Weather.AutoDownloadInterval
DWord Value:
30 (Decimal)
Change the value to whatever time you want in minutes. Reboot. Voila!
Enjoy!

Any trick for automatic update of the weather image.
I mean for example: now is night ... I update the weather application via internet ... the image is e.g. the moon (but I also have the meteo for next 3 days)... If I don't update again, the image of the moon still remain even at midday and don't change also the day after. Is it possible to have an image that change updated with the clock? I don't want update constantly via internet for having a correct image on my today screen
SPB weather do this correctly.
Sorry for my bad english ... I hope you can understand.
Thanks in advance.

The image updates with the weather...because it displays the weather, not just day-or-night. I mean, it doesn't show just a sun or moon, it can be sun-with-clouds, moon-with-rain, etc. So that's why it doesn't change if you don't update the weather. If you set it to update once every hour or two...that's a very small hit on battery life.
Okay, this "hack" is behaving a little strangely. I absolutely know for certain that it essentially works - my weather has updated every half hour numerous times now. But, if you've got a weak signal and the weather CAN'T update at the required time, it seems to break. It has happened once now, and I looked at the weather tab and it said last updated 1 hour ago.
What I SHOULD have done then was just wait, to see when it finally tried again. But instead I hit the update button and updated it, after which it worked as it should and updated every half hour.
So, once it "breaks" by not being able to retrieve the update, I need to find out how long it waits after that, and if it DOES finally auto update again, whether or not it sticks to the half hour interval after.
I'll keep an eye on it and let you know what happens. In the meantime, I absolutely suggest adding that reg entry! No ill effects so far, even once "broke" I'm certain it will auto update again eventually. Plus, it doesn't fail to update often at all (only when my signal is at like 1 bar), so for day to day purposes this should be excellent.
And like I said, if it does fail, you just have to manually update it once and it's back up again.
GOod luck, let me know if anyone else experiences this. I just tend to go to a few places with no signal alot...
THanks,
Jeff

Jeff.....thank you soooooo much for discovering this!! Im going to try this asap !! I have been wanting to autoupdate the weather at a specific time interval forever. Also, if someone could cab this or better yet add it to advance config or other config app which you could easily edit the time interval...that would be luv. Thanks again for this.
p.s. could you post which rom and radio your using..
My pleasure!
It's still a little flaky, but I think that's because the URL for the updates is being flaky. I tried a manual update 4 times before it was successful. THen I set the interval to 10 minutes, and it indeed updated appropriately every 10 mins. So again, it works, but it appears we're at the mercy of the server that's dishing out the weather info.
I'm on the Energy ROM from 11/08/2009 and I'm using the 4.49.25.05 Radio.
I would absolutely cab this up for you, but I have not learned how yet. So until someone else can, you're going to have to make the reg entry by hand.
If someone does cab this up, might I suggest making several cabs for different update times. Perhaps a 30 minute, a 60 minute, and a 15 minute for the really hardcore junkies?
Thanks, good luck, and enjoy the more frequent updates!

Can't lock phone / put in standby (solved!)

Hello all,
My phone is not working properly. I've had some bugs most people seem to be having, but now I have something which is quite annoying. I can't find it on these forums or anywhere on the internet.
I have seen a 1 line reference to my problem here:
/showthread.php?t=666332&highlight=standby
Flaws & annoyances with the HTC Desire (with workarounds!) [updated Apr 23, 2010
Hardware defects. Eg. Dust under screen, device not going into standby properly. Most of us don't experience these. Contact your retailer to exchange the unit or HTC to claim warranty.
So, I seem to have this problem. The phone wakes up with whatever button I press, and I don't have to unlock the phone. I have a unlock pattern set. It also doesn't ask me for this.
I couldn't find a proper topic about this problem, but I assume I'm not the only one. Is there a fix, or is it a hardware problem?
It wouldn't make sense to me if it's a hardware problem since the screen does turn off when I press the 'power' button.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks, Bart.
Which Lock?
are you using the built in lock or a third party lock app? I had the same problem when I used LockBot. If it's the standard lock, have you tried Powering the phone off then back on?
I am just using the built in application. I haven't used any other lock app.
I have tried turning the phone off twice, and both times it came back (might have been after charging it, but I don't know at all if that's the reason).
edit: I'm gonna try to recreate the problem with restarting and trying to find out when it stops working properly.
edit2: I restarted now... and it hadn't saved the new background I set... strange... :/
edit3: Ok, it still locks itself... I guess I'll just need to wait and see when it doesn't work anymore... maybe it's just a matter of time for it to stop working...
The problem that you quote in your opening post is probably the problem concerning the Desire (or rather an application running on the Desire) not properly releasing a wake lock which causes severe battery drain, e.g. the calendar app about which another thread exists.
Your problem seems to be quite strange. You do not happen to have an application called 'No lock' installed, right?
No, I don't have 'No lock' installed.
I use 2 calander widgets though... (the little one on my home screen, and an more advanced one on another screen.)
I've got quite some applications installed though... I'll just type them here, maybe someone can see something wrong...

Lets hope it wont brake again... but that's probably too optimistic.
First off: sorry for the double post, but I have some new information which will also mean the end of this topic.
This morning it didn't work anymore, and the only application that did it's thing this night was the kaloer clock (night clock).
I looked at the settings, and there are some settings about screen lock.
It's not clear at all, but I changed some settings, and it locks again.
So, I guess it was just me using an app which I didn't fully understand. I'm glad you guys helped me though. And I'm definitely glad that my problem is solved!

Helicopter view problem

I don't know if anybody else is experiencing the same issue but my desire has this problem now and then. Sometimes when i move around htc sense and i will go to the helicopter view I don't see 7 home screens, just first one that is located in the top left hand corner.
When this occurs and will leave helicopter view mode my contacts widget is being funny and I can't select any contacts on it. Just Luke I said it doesn't happen very often, but still it occurs and its very frustrating. Is that ROM problem? After hard reset problem still exists.
After few minutes phone is working fine.
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
Had that happen once. A reset fixed it and I didn't get it again. I think it may have been one of the widgets I don't use anymore, maybe friend feed?
I've had this a few times. If I just put the phone on stand-by it seems to sort it.
I have a feeling it's the calendar widget that acts a bit funny on mine.
Widgets that I use:
1. Full screen calendar
2. Full screen mail
3. Full screen messages
4. Clock with weather + one line calendar widget + some program icons
5. Full screen contacts
6. 2 lines music player + one line power management + few programs
7. Full screen news
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
it is the calendar, there is somewhere another post here ...
just kill it with a taskmanager and it should work again.
btw: because the calendar is so sucky, i use now "Calendar Pad" ... actually i dropped all HTC widgets
I had this exact same problem, but did not know how to describe it.
When it happened, sometime, going into "all programs" it seems the phone tried to be in landscape mode.
I tried disabling some widget. After disabling the HTC Contact Widget, the problem never occured again.
Sometimes I get it. I just press standby then again and it fixes it.
I used to have this problem often but i havent seen it for a while now so i had forgotten about it. It may be the calendar widget like someone said, and come think of it, i havent had the problem since i moved my calendar widget to the homescreen on the far left. (used to have it just to the right of the main)

[Q] Disable Google Now "Travel To" and "Weather" Notifications

EDIT: ignore; posted to wrong subforum.
Is there a way to disable the Google Now notifications for "travel to" and "weather" that popup on your phone all day long? I never need or want to know how long it is to travel to my home or office. I don't want a weather update either. How can I disable that crap? I tried going to the Android Wear app, then Settings | Block Apps, but there is nothing listed there that corresponds to these annoying notifications.

I think when the notification pops up on your phone you can go to google now and there is an option to "never remind me about this" or something like that. I've done it before I don't remember the exact process, good luck

Yes, that applies to almost any app, but not for Google Now for some reason. You can't block them from the phone
This has now started to annoy me a bit too. The amount of times I glance down and think I've got a notification, only to find that it's telling me the weather outside the window I'm sitting next to.
The "travel to" is sometimes interesting, since it seems to pick up routines, but my life is pretty boring, so I've never had cause to use it. That, plus it updates slowly, so it'll tell me I'm 10 minutes from home when I'm inside.
I don't mind them being there if I scrolled down to view - similar to how Google Now works on a handset, but to have them constantly reappearing kind of dilutes the concept of notifications.

I'm not sure I entirely buy their concept of notifications-only on the watch in the first place. Some of these cards represent information that I may want to know on demand. Delivering them only in the manner of a notification means that I can't find the information out right "now" when I want to. And, it means that they unnecessarily alert me to information that I don't want to know at that particular time.
And, if I want to leave them visible (i.e. not swipe to dismiss them), then they continually clutter the bottom of the screen as if they are important information that I'm not aware of - even if I've already visited them and read what they had to say.
There needs to be a concept of "information available" which are screens that can be set to "always available" and they do not act like notifications - they never vibrate and they don't show up on the screen, but you can swipe down to them when you wish.
Even notifications need an "acknowledged, but not dismissed" state so that even if it was a text message or phone call that you missed, you can leave it on the watch but once you've read it you can have it not peek out at you when all you want to do is read the time.
The data provided on the watch needs a lot more flavors and distinctions than "everything is an equally important and annoying notification that you must deal with or dismiss or it won't go away".
^ I agree, hopefully future upgrades of Android Wear will be more sophisticated.
