Well first off I want to apologize for such a lame first thread, but I've been a heavy reader for a while now and this is the first time I haven't been able to solve it.
I bought a Sandisk 16gb micro sdhc class 2 card for my fuze and having a very difficult time formatting it.
I put it in my phone, connected it to my comp via usb and selected "disk drive" option on my phone, then on my comp selected the "open folder to view files" option and I put some files on it. I then disconnected it from my comp and a few minutes later checked to see if my files were on my phone, the files were there but it said the card was full when there was only ~1.2gigs on it. So I connected it back to my computer and when I tried to open the card it said that the card was not formatted, so I select the format now option and it will fail, saying windows could not complete formatting. I then downloaded the panasonic sd formatter from www.sdcard.com and tried formatting again and it says the write protection switch is on and to turn it off, well there isnt a write protection switch on the card...
So I'm not sure what to do at this point, can anyone offer any insight to this issue?
Thanks in advance for any help.
There is a write protection switch on the SD adapter
well in my case the "sd adapter" is my fuze/tp which has never had any problems serving as a disk drive adapter for my sd card in the past.
my laptop has a slot for memory cards and i do have a micro>sd apadter but my lt can not read sd hc cards.
no one can help or offer any insight?
I really don't want to have to buy another one..
I would be willing to donate to whoever can help me fix this..
SanDisk microSDHC card
I did move the write protection switch both ways and it still says write protected in either direction. please help. Thanks
i think it may be your version of windows. i had a similar problem even with a 4gb non-sdhc sd card. it can be read on the phone, but for some reason can't be read if put in the laptop. i just didn't format it because i know it worked.
when i bought a 16gb micro sd for my touch pro, funnily the laptop recognised it even with an adaptor. so maybe since i updated my windows vista, it also updated 'the driver' for the card?
sorry more anecdotal than anything else. just try to use windows update - if you use windows.it may help as in my case.
did u solved the problem???
i have the same problem
i can see the files from the card but i cant delete/copy/format (
the card may be a fake. registration does not actually authenticate the card. where were these cards purchased? if ebay or some similar site you should probably contact sandisk support to verify authenticity 866-sandisk
I have a same problem. Although it is a Transcend disc 16GB class 2. No, I didn't buy it on ebay. I am using Windows 7 x64. Copying to the card can happen when it is in the phone mounted.
same exact freaking problem
ok i'm having this same problem with a sandisk 8gb card... It's very annoying as i can read but basiaclly cannot write anything to it or format it. How was this problem solved?
still no solution?
im dealing with the same issue i have a 16g sd that came with my d1 and now my pc reads 14g from my phone then 31mb from a flash reader??

Thank you this thread has helped!
You asked for more info and I would recommend two free programs:
1) H2testw 1.4 which tests to see if your card has genuine capacity
2) SD Formatter for SDHC This software formats all SD memory cards, SDHC memory cards,

Fascinating Devil Helly Bean Sept 1 Devil 1.3.1...
Check my last post on the thread I quoted - you are probably using SD slot on PC. Try USB. What card were you using.

Well its a dell PC flash card reader, the SD to micro I've tried 3 and I'll see what kind of SD but it was the stock one from my d1
Fascinating
When I tried to access an app that was installed on SD, my phone locked up. Upon a reboot I no longer have access to the card, all the apps' shortcuts are broken and all the options like mount SD card, format SD card are greyed out. Also when I connect the use cable there is no option to mount as disk drive anymore. I've rebooted, tried removing the card etc but no luck. Anyone else had this? I can't find my micro SD card adapter right now so I cart try it in my pc.

Did you try running checkdisk from windows to repair it?
No cos I can't mount it in Windows

Try repartitioning your sd card. Could be a corrupt ext partition, or your sd is completely screwed.

I'll have to find my adapter

Sounds like a bigger problem than a broken ext if nothing can read/mount the sd card. Might be the end of your sd cards life im afraid

I've only had it about 2 months.....get what you pay for I suppose (click). Anyway still no luck with the adapter so I'll see if anyone's got one at work tomorrow.
OK, I found my adapter (and my old microSD card hiding within), windows has no problems seeing the 16gb card and my old (original 4gb) card has the same problem in the phone. For good measure I did a chkdsk on the card.
What are my options?
I've performed a full reset and still got the problem. Anyone got any suggestions?
anyone? I'm thinking it's a desire hardware fault.
any help? cheers
A number of us have had failed SD cards. In my case, Windows could see it well enough to copy most of the data off but failed to reformat it. I suggest you try to copy the data somewhere safe and then reformat in Windows. If the reformat works it's probably a hardware issue. If the reformat doesn't work it's probably the card.
I'm sure others will have different views!
Yeah but it's same with both my cards. I'll give it a go anyway cheers.
The one that came with the phone .. ( 8GB Class 2 ) came up with with a read only error last week ...
The card was dead.
I got a 8GB card class 6... used app brain .. and restored all my apps fine... etc
fab.. phones faster .. no problems
After inserting my old card again I now get the dreaded -
SD card damaged. You may have to reformat it.
Of course when you follow the wizard to format it, it doesn't seem to format it. I did try a full format in Windows earlier, no luck.

Just to help anyone who stumbles over this thread in search of an answer, I've had to send it away for repair, it appears to be a hardware fault. 2-3 weeks.
My Kingston 32GB microSD is not working. I plugged it into my computer, a Win7 x64 laptop, through the adapter included with it. At the same time, I used my phone's disk drive feature to mount my old 2gb and copy everything from the 2 to the 32. I then copied the new incubus warm z ROM to the new card as well. I plugged the 32gb card into my phone, and it seemed to be fine. Then I booted recovery, made a nandroid, all still fine. I then wiped my device to install warm z, then did install zip from sd card and selected it and hit install. It came back bad file install failed. Now, nothing reads my 32gb sdcard. The 2GB continues to work fine. Any suggestions? The 2gb had 100 MB free at the time of copying if it matters
Have you tried reformatting. I know there are programs out there for reformatting corrupt SD cards when windows can't get it done.
You can try to repair the SD card through Windows. Mount the SD card to your computer. My Computer, Right click on the SD card drive, Properties,Tools Tab,Check drive for errors.
GL
Repairing through windows doesn't work. I also tried snow leopard disk utility, which also fails. I'll look for one of those programs and report back.

Try this. It's an official SD card formatting program from Panasonic that formats SD cards to official specs. You can then use Windows to format it to Fat32 if needed. I have used 2.0 on my Win7 x64, and you'll see the 3.0 beta they have for the SDXC cards. I haven't had any issues with it, since I have about 6 microSD's for various MP3 players, phones, computer stuff, it's what I use when reformatting.

I tried the 3 beta and the 2 stable; both say that the write-protection switch is on when it is not. Any suggestions?
I'm pretty sure write protection is found in the reader. Maybe try another
I tried it in my laptop's internal reader and in my USB reader. The USB reader was tried on Windows 7 x64 and on Mac OS X 10.6.6.
None worked.
Give this a read.

I'll try the tape thing and report back. My Transcend 8gb class 6 SDHC, meanwhile, works great in the internal. If it matters, I have a Gateway MD2419U laptop
No dice on the tape trick...
I don't know. I guess just keep trying different stuff. Someone said they were able to format a 1gb partition onto the card with there camera. Then through that partition they were able to format entire card. I've seen a few people claiming hdd low level format will fix any problem. You didn't get your card off eBay did you
Well my **** camera didn't do the trick either.... No, I didn't get it off ebay. I dislike ebay with a passion lol
Unfortunately, being a minor, I do not possess a credit card or PayPal account, so my dad found one and ordered it for me. I know for a fact that he doesn't have an ebay account.
Well it's dead... I talked to a couple people at best buy today and they confirmed it.

I have adata 16Gb class 10 card I order her trough ebay It's original for sure, and I have been using her for like half a year or so, and recently when my mobile shuts down (low battery) my mobile said blank card and and to format her. I have htc desire(amoled) I'm using Runnymede 6.1 stable ROM, and I don't think that has do to anything with my card blank, becouse it was happening on previous rom two but just so you know. Can someone please help my I tried full format ejecting card putting her back, and same thing, is my card dying ?
Did you check your card on a PC? Is it recognized and can you access it? If so, make a backup and try to check the card with on board tools (e.g. for Windows: http://www.ehow.com/how_6857598_check-sd-card-errors.html).
Alternatively, there are plenty of tools on the web, like
SDFormatter (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/)
or
H2testw (http://www.heise.de/download/h2testw.html)
Good luck!
PS. A while ago, I also had some trouble with my Samsung 16GB Class 10 MicroSD. I formatted it again and had since no more issues.
When I format her (trough my phone usb becouse I don't have sd card reader) she is okay again and PC recognized her but after some time she did that again blank sd and that usually happends when my phone shuts down not by me but when battery is low even sometimes for some other reason, it's iritating becouse I have to format her and install ROM again.
Mmh, it is a little hard to tell whether the problem is solely down to your sd card or also to your phone, as long as you are not able to test the card outside the phone with a PC etc. Have you tried touse the PC tools in disk drive mode? According to this thread, H2testw works this way. You might also wanna try apps from google play/android market, e.g. 'SD Tools' or 'SD Card Tester'. I have not used any of those, so I can't tell if they are useful.
Finally, don't you have any opportunity to use a friend's PC or borrow a card reader? Nevertheless, I would strongly recommend you to buy a proper (from my experience the cheapest ones suck, e.g. are very slow, don't recognize some card formats) card reader, either a multi-format one or a microsd2usb one.
If you still have guarantee on your card, why not simply get a replacement by the reseller? I mean, if you can still access the card (at least for a while) then you should be able to create a backup and later restore it to a new card.

I run H2testw and no error found. I was planing to buy microsd card reader allInOne and that kind of reader I know that cheap one sucks, but I didn't have anything to put in until now I mean I still have my phone and card in it and when I connect it to PC I can format her so I don't know should I really bought that reader...I don't know about guarantee becouse I throw away that serial number that was on the case and with that serial number you can register on adata site and see If you still have guarantee but now I can't becouse I don't have it
Hi,
I'm new to the forum
I just bought a new HTC desire Z but there's one problem
When i insert my 8 gb sandisk class 4 SDHC card,
It tells me to format it. When i press format nothing happens :s
Any tips?
Boris
Try formatting the card through a PC first, choosing FAT32 and deselecting the "fast format" option. Let it run (might take 15min or more) and then put the card in your phone. See if this way it works.

I already tried that, thanks for the fast reply anyway
I tried about everything i could find using google and this site's search function, but it all failed.
It sucks because you need a sd card for so many things on an android phone, even thoug it has 1.5 GB built in memory.
Is it a new card? If so, its already formatted FAT32, and should work out of the box. If its still asking you to format, even after formatting on PC, and format on the phone doesn't work, the card may be defective or damaged.

New card, new phone. Thanks
I'm betting something is wrong with the card. That is not a normal message to get with a brand new SD card. Try a different one, if you have access to one, or excahnge the one you've got.
No luck

OK, so i've tried 2 diffirent 8gb sdhc cards and 1 regular 2gb sd card.
still no luck.
the same problem keeps occuring :s
I tried formatting the cards in every possible way, even trough adb with the card inside the phone, no luck.
I think i'm about to sell the phone on ebay
you can just buy the sd card tray on ebay for about 12 bucks, easy to replace
Just format it on your computer instead (micro SD card reader or whatever).
I had this problem using IC9 beta, wouldn't format my card.
I used my PC and it was fine...
