Syncing Google Contacts without a GMail account. - Desire General

I use my personal email address as my Google ID. I have absolutely need for a gmail account, but I do use contacts, bookmarks and other services.
I have tried to sync my Desire to my Google accounts, but it tells me "does not use Google Mail" and won't let me proceed until I sign up for a googlemail address.
Is there any way round this without signing up for an email address I will never use?

Google Apps?

but even a google apps domain should work absolutely fine...or at least they always used to..
of course, if you have literaly signed into igoogle with your own email address and do not actually have a googlemail account, be that normal or google apps domain, then yes, you would need to sign up for one. that's just how it works.

Thanks for the quick replies.
I do literally sign into Google with my own email address and it works fine for all of the web-based services I ever use. But if I have to, I will setup an inbox which will never be used.

Arghhh... Hotmail/Gmail sync issues

Hey All,
Had the desire for a couple of weeks now and I must say I'm impressed with it, as most of you are as well.
I've come across the following very irritating problem though:
My primary e-mail address is hotmail. Been using it for years and years and I've never had the need to change to gmail. Having switched to android now I understand that I can't sync the phone to hotmail. I have it working on pop which is 'fine' but I want proper syncing of mail and calendars which is not supported.
Fair enough, I thought this was the time I'm supposed to switch to gmail. When I booted the phone up for the first time I was asked for a gmail account for google maps, etc. and I just used one I had created a while back. Now that I'm looking to migrate to gmail completely in order to benefit from syncing, etc. I want to change this e-mail address to another gmail one.
Has anyone managed to do this without doing a factory reset on the desire??
I've tried:
i. Changing the gmail password from a pc and rebooting the phone - it just says it failed to sign in and prompts for the new password, won't let you change e-mail address though.
ii. Clearing all cache's from google related application - gtalk, gmail, maps, gapps, etc. - This doesn't work either as somehow the account information is still held.
iii. Creating a secondary e-mail address and try get everything to use it instead then remove the primary one - didn't manage either. I changed google maps, gmail and the calendar app to use the new e-mail address but it still won't let me delete the other one as it says it's being used by some other app!
Any help would be much appreciated... I really don't feel like going through a factory reset and installing everything again!
Thanks!
Go to "Menu" - "Settings" - "Accounts & Sync", tap on the Google account en tap on "Remove account". (Go back to all accounts and you can add a new Google account.)

On this subject, my advice to anyone is to get their own domain name and then use Google Apps for Domains.
At present this is what I do for my email, but if in a few years time something better than Gmail comes along, chances are I can repoint my domain to a new mail service and thus keep my email address in perpetuity.
Regards,
Dave

Forgot to mention I tried this as well but it won't let me remove it as it says the account is being used by some application
Really frustrating!
I got this same problem as this old post, but can not find the solution....does anyone know the answer as time has moved on and maybe it is an available solution.
My issue is that I just flashed LeeDrOid 2.3b&c to my Desire. I entered my HOTMAIL e-mail details as the first address at the set up prompt. Now i can not findout how to delete that account.
It seems that the whole Android E-mail setup and operation is not really as good as Windows Mobile! or its operator error ;-)
For my Sync'd HOTMAIL I'm currently using TouchDown and set the server name to 'm.hotmail.com' this thirdparty software allows full syncronisation to my Hotmail account both ways including any folders that i choose, apart from the deleted bin on my Webmail does not get emptied if i delete all from the TouchDown application on my Desire.
On my Gmail i have created my account in the Exchange option and used m.gmail.com for the server, whilst this gives me a view of all the account folders all of them show "no mail" even though i have set the Receive days to 30 days and know that I have e-mails in the folders that are newer than 30 days old.
I really would like a fully operational integrated IMAP set up for both my Gmail accounts (i have 2 account) and one HOTMAIL account, ideally using the built in Gmail and "standard Mail" programs that come with FROYO Sense.
So anyone know the answer to achieving this?
i) How to delete my original Hotmail account entered on start up of my new ROM.
ii) Is it possible to set up withing the Sense builtin applications for Exchange Gmail and also for Exchange Hotmail so that i can do away with hte TouchDown application?
Thanx for any assistance on this.

General Android question apps username or google account?

I have a google account ***@gmail.com and this is linked to my google apps e mail ***@customdomain.com.
I don't use the google account gmail address at all, only the google apps account. Presumably, my phone (when I get it) will ask me for my google account details so which should I use?
I see from another thread that paying for apps necessitates a google account login that is linked to google checkout rather than a google apps login. I don't want to get things too complicated but at he same time I want all of my contacts to be synched with my google apps account rather than my google account.
Does this make sense and can anyone suggest what I should do?
I definitely don't want the main e mail address and contacts list to be my @gmail.com address. Thanks
Don't sweat it! It isn't a problem.
Set up your phone with your Google Apps for Domains account.
Everything will work just fine, up to the point when you want to purchase some apps from the market. It will then just ask you for another account to link to Google Checkout, purely for purchasing purposes only - all your purchased apps will still be linked to your Google Apps for Domains account.

Dave
Awesome, Thanks

Work around for second gmail account
THere is a work around for this problem. Go to youtube application and login to the second gmail application you want to setup. Now go to general accounts app and you will notice that you can easily add the second account (in some cases android would have automatically added the google account).
Thanks, the trick worked for me but the defy still refuses to sync my contacts & emails

[Q] Change Account Type from Hotmail to Outlook

Rewritten:
Alright, I wasn't clear enough, so I'm rewriting this entire post. I use Outlook.com for managing my email, contact and calendar. When I sign in to a Windows 8 machine, my account shows up as a Hotmail account, and not an Outlook.com account. These services are essentially the same thing (they're just different front ends), but I prefer the Outlook.com name and branding over Hotmail.
The issue isn't on the actual website, it's with Windows 8's built in applications: Mail, Calendar, Messaging and People. When I open one of these applications, go to "Settings" and then "Accounts," my account is listed as a Hotmail account. If I try to pin my Mail inbox to my Start Screen, I get a Hotmail icon on the pinned tile instead of the Outlook.com icon. It's not really a big deal, it's just something that bothers me.
I've tried logging out and logging back in, choosing "Outlook" as my account type, etc, but it always shows up as Hotmail. So my question is: Is there somewhere in the registry I can go and manually fix this? The account is system wide, I use it to log in to the machine and everything, so I would think the type would be stored somewhere in the registry.

I'm really annoyed by this. I use Outlook.com, and love it. But when I signed in on my Windows 8 machines, they showed up as Hotmail. I know this is the same service, and it doesn't really matter, but I'd really prefer it to show up as an "Outlook.com" account (basically, I prefer the name and the logo over Hotmail). I've seen screenshots from bloggers and others that show an Outlook.com account, so I'm unclear why mine isn't like that.
Is there something I can do to change the account type in the registry or something?

I don't get it? You visit outlook.com via IE and it doesn't obtain your Hotmail Account and/or it sends you to Hotmail and not Outlook?
Let me ask you, did you go to Outlook.com, log out of your current logged in Hotmail account and login to your Outlook account ([email protected])?
Sorry, I should've been more clear. The issue is with the built in Mail app. I signed in to Widows 8 using my Outlook.com account, and for some reason it wants to use the Hotmail icon for the mail. It's annoying. Not a huge deal, but annoying. I've rewritten the main post to be more clear.

I have 3 calender accounts, 2 gmail and 1 yahoo. Is it possible to add a third account so the tab will sync with it also. I have the 2 gmails added to the Google account settings but can not find a way to add a third. You can actually use gmail email accounts to import emails from things like say yahoo so they all come to one email address if that makes sense, but otherwise its sacrifice time lol sorry...may i ask what is your intended use to have the 3 gmail accounts synced in your phone? Do u just want the emails themselves or all of googles services for all 3 if that makes sense.
I have a Yahoo account on my calander and does not sync.
