[KITCHEN] Basic ROM kitchen for aspiring Hero cooks [PC/MAC] - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

For anyone who missed it, this is just a reminder link to the original thread, which has now been moved to the 'Chef Central' section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
The kitchen was originally written for the Hero, but now covers all HTC Android-based GSM ROMs.
Before flashing any ROM from the kitchen, please make a Nandroid backup first of your existing ROM!
Thank you, and enjoy!

Just want to say thanks for your work on this kitchen dsi, could not post in the original thread.
The only thing im not happy about is the fact that its stopping me getting on with other things I should be doing Instead im messing around with ROMs all the time lol
There is one thing thats bugging me, im getting all my customisations working but how do i change the default homescreen of a ROM?? I know this isnt really something done in the kitchen but its bugging me. Im just having to store the wallpaper on the SD card atm.

It's one of the XML files in the system/etc folder. Can't remember which off the top of my head but I can have a look after work if you haven't found it by then.

Reported. No need to be rude.
Your ROM is simply another ROM with added/removed APKs.
You don't need to spam this forum with a dozen of "ROM" threads, it's annoying.
Learn a bit more about Android and then try modifying sources etc.
Or if you desire, port a ROM from another device.
But don't just republish ROMs with just APKs removed or added.. That's just not useful as everybody can just download those APKs from the Market.

Yeah, please stop spamming this forum... At least three threads about your (non-)ROM, this is just a mess.
Can you just stick to one thread for all your 'ROM' updates please. Thanks.
EDITED: BTW, what's an ultra ROM?
Supper rom? (Evening meal Rom) Nice!
really fast

First of all, there is a little box on top called search. You where notified about that one when you signed up.
If you plan to publish your ROM/ROM's here, to cut it short do this;
There is a forum section called Chef Central. Read the sticky "Some Advice" in that forum. Then read the sticky on top of Desire Development. Then get begin modding the other ROM's available, so you get a hang of how they work. Then, cook away and test thoroughly.
Thank you for your help

That freakin thread is so confusing, I don't see how it's easier than mine...

That other thread covers a lot of other topics, which isn't bad... it's just kinda confusing IMHO!

Yes, but my thread is very to-the-point. Not saying your thread is useless, just not the first thing a newbie should see IMHO. Once they work thru my thread, yours would be a good one to look at... assuming they actually read my thread or yours at all.
This isn't a thread battle, and Arrrghhh,i've not suggested your thread because your thread isn't for newbies and covers less topics
But i'll add it to my post
Is it possible to install a full blown rooted Android rom on the Rhodium? Thanks

I wasn't particularly eager to install xdandroid (even though I was excited about the concept) until I read ryannathans' thread. Granted it isn't organized well, but it doesn't assume knowledge that isn't there, which makes it ideal for the type of noob that will read.

Both XDAndroid builds are rooted - do you mean replacing WinMo? It's possible, but not stable. Doesn't play nice at all with GSM devices, and it's not easy/simple on CDMA ones.
See

I don't see the point, everything I needed was in ryan's thread. They serve different purposes. You seem to mostly be focused on FRX06, getting people onto that entry level stable build. You mention kernels and the new rootfs in your thread, leaving someone like me to wonder WTF is a rootfs and kernel? Ryan fills in the blanks and focuses on getting people who don't know squat to FRX6.5, and gives us just enough info to understand the threads he links to. There's no reason for you to duplicate that.

[Q] How Do The Devs Do It (And How Can I?)

So here's something that I've been wondering about: How does one gain the knowledge to develop one's own ROM? Say I wanted to get the AOSP source from Google and start building my own ROM: How would I even go about that? Is there a manual somewhere? Does every dev just have a CS degree and all the right tools lying around? Where do you start?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94Az1kcQvc4
Watch the video it will show you how to create a custom rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
here is the kitchen. It is pretty fun and frightening once you get to repackaged and start the boot.
Have fun!!!!
Thanks guys.
EDIT: Looks like fun, I'll play with the kitchen, but it looks like this isn't really the way to get an AOSP ROM built up from the Google public source. No problem, I'll start slow, but eventually I do want to get out of the kitchen and under the hood. Thanks for the quick start!

great!!! I'm gonna hit you up for future requests
If you want to play with AOSP source, I'd look at getting involved with Cyanogen. There are articles on setting up and building from source on their wiki.
the way i'm trying to do it, is i just am taking it really slow. i started as a noob (of course) and slowly worked my way up the q&a section, from asking questions to answering them. then, i started doing small requests, and things for myself, like zips and stuff. then started small themeing, and finally xml themeing. i'm sorta at the apk heavy modding stage now lol. so that's my stragegy.
shoudln't there be some website by now where you can just click some checkboxes for the features you want cooked into a rom, compiles it, and makes it downloadable. wouldn't that be the sheezy?

it is called a kitchen. Modaco had one on his site for the hero.
But really...don't be lazy. using DSIXDA's kitchen isn't hard, and it really doesn't take much effort, plus you have the ability to REALLY customize stuff.
Interesting thread. A bit tempted to step into the kitchen. Thanx for all the info folks.

appeal to all ROM cooks

Hello dear Rom Cooks
Its just annoying that every ROM cook use different location for (as example) the bootanimation
So i want to make an appeal, that we make a standard for some things!
For bootanimation, why we don't use simply:
System/media/bootloader
So, please, use this Thread as a meeting place to make a standard. If anyone got more Ideas, just Post it.
i gonna make an answer, where i put in the results from the "meetings"
AND:
Please don't miss understand me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27689705&postcount=5

Reserved for the standards
just my opinion...but don't you think developers have enough issues to worry about when creating their roms? why add another thing to do on their list and create standards for them?
Not trying to cause an argument, but I think people who do this in their spare time shouldn't be confined to a "standard"
by the way htc's standard for boot animation is system/customize/resource.
so, that should be the standard. but I believe the user should just ask the dev what folder things are in in their forum if they cannot figure it out on their own.

I don't want to bind them on a standard. Just think it would be easyer. I agree that they have much other problems and i don't want to critizise their work.
Seems Like a Good Idea. Why don’t we give this a try?
maybe a cook find some other things, which would be able to standardize

Of course this is a possible variant. BUT:
I think every one would agree, that in a thread which is about 8000 sites, no one would read anything and find the correct path. And much people don't use the thread search bar. So with one ROM, many people would ask the same. And when it works, and we could create "a standard" for things like this, its possible to make a sticky, so everyone can go there and watch, where which datas are.
And by the way: i tried this phath wigh ARHD but the zip file (the bootanimation) don't works... i had to take a app.
There are just 2 place where you can find bootanimation.zip in HTC ROMs
/data/local/bootanimation.zip
/system/customize/resources/bootanimation.zip
So...2 places, not much I think. First place is common for custom ROMs, 2nd place is common for stock ROMs.

+1 I would rather the Devs focus more on increasing the performance etc... on our phones as they do already rather than messing around standardising the location of bootanimations. All Devs produce different work and if they were all the same it would be pointless much like this thread is.
EDIT: Also I understand the thinking behind posting this in the Development section however a discussion like this really belongs in General

If you previously had a HTC device and prefer running custom Sense ROMs, you would know what Mike has pointed out.
All you need do to find the bootanimation.zip is just open the ROM zip with your choice of archiver 7Zip or WinRAR and search the folders and replace it with your choice of bootanimation, that is if you wana change the animation.
As for your suggestion regarding where to place the bootanimation, why do you want to re-invent the wheel, if that is where you would prefer it, cook a ROM and put it there.
I'm happy where it is and know where to find it if i wana change it, i prefer to have my phone in a booted state, i mean c'mon how many times a day are you gona boot and reboot your phone?

Nopa. I dont write about that all devs must make the same. a work is characterized by tweaks, gui, perfomance etc etc etc. not by the folders. so i I have to disagree with you
Moved to general, since the dev forum is not the right place for this.
