Hey, I need your help!
I'm thinking about exchanging my HD2 for a Desire, but I'd like to know how good the single LED flash is vs. the dual LED in the HD2.
Does someone own both phones? If so, could you do some comparison shots with the flash?
Also, can you say something about the battery life?
And screen with the fewer sub-pixels in the Desire vs. the lower contrast of the HD2's LCD screen?
Really hope someone has them both and can help me.
I will receive my Desire on tuesday hopefully, so then I will be able to compare it for you with my sisters hd2 of course if you dont mind waiting, pretty sure some users here have both phones already
I dunno if this helps but the flash is bright enough to take a photo in a completely dark room and it be visible.

No, I don't mind waiting. It will only become available here in a week or so.
EDIT: Thanks, brummiesteven. Yes, from what I read it's pretty good, I only wonder how good it is compared to the HD2...

you can order desire from t-mobile over the phone or through the internet and you get 7 days to play with it and return it, and they will pay you back so i think that would be the best for you cuz you can test it however you like
Aren't they SIM-locked?

Anyway, if someone could do a test, that would be great.

No you need to debrand to get HTC Updates. Although there is no physical branding and only a T-Mobile startup animation.

Battery life is about 25% better on the Desire.
Flash comparison please make your own mind up, I have uploaded comparison shots taken with both phones below:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/sets/72157623774124256/
Screen is gonna be one of those things were everyone has a different opinion, but my choice would be the size and clear readability of the HD2 over the better contrast on the Desire.
Thanks very much!
Crazy, I think the picture from the Desire looks better.
What camera drivers do you have on your HD2? Those from the TMO US 2.10 ROM?
It looks like the single LED on the Desire is just as bright as the two LEDs of the HD2, is that true? What if you take a picture in a big, dark room, is the range of the Desire's flash the same as the range of the HD2's flash?
Nice to hear that the battery life is better, despite the spec sheets telling something different. Actually, with the smaller AMOLED screen, the Desire's battery life *should* be better, but strangely, HTC claim otherwise.
I have a Touch HD with a 3.8" screen and an HD2 with the 4.3" screen, and interestingly, at minimum zoom level (and the same amount of content on both screens), the Touch HD's smaller screen is more readable.
I guess this isn't the case with the Desire, since it has less sub-pixels?
reese
well i have just bought a Desire unlocked and come from a HD2 . i would say the desire definately has the better camera /flash ,takes a very nice photo and has control over saturation and other effects which make for very interesting pictures. Something which the Hd2 lacked.
Battery life for me is a bit of an issue and may be down to all the updates which i am still playing about with. Though to be honest i had to charge both by the end of the day.
Just for comparison between the two though i would say the Desire thrashes the HD2 , even screen size doesnt matter as the Desire screen is still pretty large and a delight to watch with amoled. May have issues come summer when the screen will be rendered useless( twas a bit sunny otherday and i was in the shade to read it .) Android is just great to use over windows.

Guys, I've gotten the oppertunity to trade my current silver HTC Desire, which I trully love. For a brand new HTC Desire HD.
Should I go for it or not? No sneaky catch, it's just my mom needs a new phone, she doesn't care what phone. So I could get a Desire HD with this and she gets my 'old' Desire.
gotten the same oppertunity here, my dad needs a new phone!

I'm really interested in the Desire HD. But I also REALLLLLYYYY love my SILVER Desire.
My previous phone was a crappy HP iPAQ Data Messenger running WM6.1, so I didn't feel bad at all getting rid of that. But this is my Desire dude! MY DESIREE!
Edit:
What requires a Google Account? As she doesn't have Gmail and you know about Android...

maybe it will take a long time until root, s-off and uvoc is available, and it might lack good cooked roms and developers. it could be like htc legend and wildfire, nothing really happens at those forums
Why does rooting need to be the main reason to get a phone? Wouldn't be in my case
I've never modded my Desire in anyway. No root, no flash, no nothing. So that ain't the deal breaker.

Desire has 1.5gb internal storage, and a WiFi hotspot, so I tend to agree that rooting it probably isn't going to be as big an issue for many.
In addition, the extras you get from htcsense.com, means it's unlikely you would want to replace the Sense ROM with an AOSP ROM.

Dave

Thinking about it, if your mum doesn't care which phone, get the HD, and buy her a PAYG Orange San Francisco. That way, you can either keep your Desire, or you can sell it!

Lol, not that extreme neither. She wants a phone with which she can call, text and read her mail quickly.
She's not an avid internet browser or a crazy install all app-er. She just want to get access to her mail and sometimes chat via MSN.
Well don't think so much. Get HD, or if you do not want I'll give my for one HD
Well, the HD is for me just way too big. The Desire 's got the perfect size imo - only option for me were the Z (but I just replaced my HD2 with a Desire last week, so I won't switch too early - maybe in January).
Be careful, there are numerous reports about the Desire HD's display looking "washed out"... Some people says the display looks really low quality.
The Desire screen is a dream to look at so I wouldn't trade a gorgeous looking 3.7" screen for a slightly bigger one that has washed out colors. Of course the HD have many other advantages but the display is very important to me at least... It was just a warning, just do a google search if you don't believe me...
Try it at least your mum will have the desire. If you don't like the HD try and get her to trade for the HD and you get your desire back.

I got sick of the size of my HD2, you can't get into a car without having to remove it from your pocket, it's bulky, they are pretty much one drop wonders as well with a screen that big. The battery life is pathetic and of course, with the Desire HD the battery will drain faster as it's only 1230 mAh quite a bit smaller than the Desires 1400 mAh battery. Coming from a HD2 to a Desire, you really notice that extra juice.
I am so happy with my Desire at the moment I wouldn't swap it for another phone.

Here is a good one...Market enabler, like in my case , if you live in a country where google does not support paid apps to yet..Otherwise you essensially get a crippled 2k app phone (most of which are wallpaper apps, ringtones and clocks or batt widgets)
I wouldnt trade.....the battery from that device sucks even harder.
just a teeny question, doesn't TFT screens suck less juice than AMOLEDs?
that's probably why HTC is using a smaller battery on the HD

Only thing white specific I'm interested in is how easy cleaning the back of the phone is from hand oils, dirt, marks, etc. Someone on youtube shows a pen coming off okay, but don't worry, I won't ask you to test that
Hope the UK retailers get their act in gear and we aren't waiting till estimates like the 10th-12th for Phone.
here's a few things you can test mate, i'd appreciate the response:
- take a 720p and 1080p video and check what bitrate it's recorded at
- take some normal and HDR shots of the same thing and post them
- take a panorama (they supposedly increased the dimensions) and post it
- run a quadrant, antutu, stuff like that and post results
thanks!

Currently got my eyes stuck on the HTC One X at the moment (I'm from Perth, Australia).
Would be awesome if we could get a black/grey one here in Australia, but not a BIG problem (I just dislike anything glossy, to be honest, and the rim around the grey's camera is matte).
Anyway, will see what SGS3 has to offer before I pick between that and the HTC One X.
Looking VERY promising and I'm really excited!

That's cool, I'm not a fanboy for any manufacturer or device & don't disregard anyone's opinion.
but SGS2 is still Samsung's flagship device, ICS is its first update to a new android & I cannot believe how poor ICS is for this device.
The design is very poor, it feels nothing like ICS.
It's really laggy & slow compared to the excellent gingerbread rom that samsung developed.
It completely ruined my confidence in Samsung's software development team & forced me to go elsewhere - maybe in the future samsung will improve its software, but for now - i want a change.
Never owned an HTC device before, never used sense & never owned a white phone before, so this is gonna feel completely fresh & new to me - excited!
I predict the sgs3 would have the same 'feel' as SGS2 but faster with better specs, & its this feel I wanted a change from. (not because it's a bad feeling, but I certainly want to feel like I have a new phone, a new experience & new software)
Good luck with your decision making

Definitely! I'm basically just looking at what both has to offer rather than sort of risk jumping into the HTC One X pool then having to come out again when the SGS3 is significantly better.
In other words, I'm looking at which has better features for me personally, since I assume they'll both be in the same price range anyway.

Could someone please describe what the screen flicker means?
I don't have any of the hardware issues but I do have one problem. On very low brightness when I scroll in apps (like when reading an article in pulse) i get a very faint change in the brightness of the screen. It's like it goes a litter dimmer and then gets bright again. Happens everytime I scroll at low brightness. Is this the screen flicker people talk about?
I also get a few jagged lines on the screen, but that happens *VERY* rarely. I don't even know a way of reproducing them.
Would you say I have a faulty set? Or is mine fine and these issues should be fixed by an update. I'm still on 1.26. 1.28 hasn't yet rolled out in India.

our screen flicker is really when the backlight is flashing very fast, mostly in grey areas of the screen. best you see it when viewing the standard picture in the "camera shots" folder, the one with the snowplains and the sun.
my screen flickers like crazy there around the sun.
if you have it, you will notice it there

the only thing wich fails is the screen, wich will flicker after some use. this will somehow get fix'd, doesn't matter if it's software sided or hardware
if it's software sided we will get a fix, else we can all exchange our device for a non flickering one..

HTC One X - HTC's New Hero Device! Mega Information Thread
I had a HOx for a few weeks and he has valid points. I showed friends the pictures I took with the HOX and they all said my HTC Incredible S took better pictures than the HOX. It was on latest 1.29 firmware.
And not only the videos are choppy, the whole UI experience is choppy, like 20fps. It is really depressed to see that the hava a full GPU, quad core power and android 4 and STILL aren't able to manage a smooth scrollinge experience (like iphone scrolling). And I know people see this but choose to ignore it, game menus scroll smooth but the actual OS lags...
edit: I had 3 HOXes, the all act the same (hardware issues ignored)

But to sum at that huge thread, I'd say it like this;
If you get a fault-free one, it's a fantastic phone.
BUT....your chances of getting a fault-free phone are much less than they should be.
If you want to take part in the HTC One X crap-shoot, please be prepared to pursue HTC with warranty returns until they get it right. Do not unlock bootloader until you are happy with it!

thx for ur reply m8, how is there batch date, or serial sequence to decide the goodness of the device? I want to check before taking it home
I didn't feel like listening to 15 minutes "whining" but compared to the sgs2 I got when it was out the hox actually already is pretty good, battery life is as good as the sgs2 after a year, no screen defects/flickering. I only have one issue though it could be considered quite a big issue and I really hope it's a software issue and it is that the sim card isn't recognised anymore and consequently the hox stops working as a phone until I reenter the pin
all in all, The HOX is bit of hit an miss. am I right ?
No, it's the best (smart)phone I ever had, I love this phone much more even than my Desire.

The One X is a fantastic device and you're MUCH more likely to get a working version than a faulty one. The only reason it LOOKS like there are loads of faulty ones is because people who have a fully functional, working device don't start threads complaining about it
There's a poll on here comparing how many people have a working one against those who have a faulty one and guess which came out on top by quite a considerable margin... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1585082&highlight=poll
Also, as this is a developers forum, people who have faulty devices are going to stumble across devices to try and find a fix. The problems aren't any way near as widespread as it seems.
Of course, defective devices shouldn't be reaching customers at all, but there's nothing you can do about that I'm afraid
No, its worse then that ... there are people reporting stranger lies
After optimising and disabling some apps that were sucking my battery down (which was my main gripe about this phone) I am more than happy with the HOX. The camera is sweet, games/emu's run great and the screen (even on 25% brightness) pops out. Well worth a purchase.
you can not go wrong with this phone mate. best option is to find a store close by to you which you can go and check the phone for yourself before taking it away with you. explain your fears to the sales assistant and see what they say and if they let you inspect it. but anyways if you get a perfect one you are in business and you could not ask for a better phone. i really hope development picks up more in our forums as this deserves nothing but the best.
s3 is another top handset but i feel there is more to the one x. development for the s3 will be huge. but think about this.
you are using Touchwiz and you are thinking man this is ugly. you want to change it but you get fed up with the launchers as well. you wish you could try sense but you can not as it is hard to port to a sammy phone and second no one has done that. were on the One X not only you have sense but we have now cm9 and you can use Touchwiz launcher as well. so you are getting yourself a beast of a phone mate

I think some people have good luck and some have bad. I've had mine for more than a week and it's perfect. However, I've accompanied someone to collect a replacement for a faulty unit. Guess what, went back home to charge and the red light is not showing on the replacement unit. I've also heard a lot of complaints ranging from battery not charging, unit not turning on, squeaky phone edges.
If quality control doesn't improve soon, and with all the SG3 hype, One X might find itself sliding down a slippery slope.

take me as an example I was about to buy one, but now I have to do a masters degree in understanding/avoiding the faults which can come with it
Hi everyone!
I'm a LG O3D user (with great regrets...) and I have the possibility of a (almost) new ONE X, unbranded for €300.
I know that every phone as its issues, and I've read the foruns in search of those issues in the ONE X, but wanted to have a deeper insight on the everyday life with this one.
I really like HTC and having owned a Hero, and knowing the support (at least here in Pt) is good, I'm really thinking of it.
Thank you very much!
I have had no problems with my One X, but from what I have read there are a few things you should check out before buying.
Check the wi-fi signal, GPS signal consistancy.
I think those 2 are the most common problems and the most annoying ones. I read also something about a gap between the screen and case, but not sure about it.
All of those can be checked out easily (10-20 minutes) before buying, so make sure you do that! You would not want to shell out 300 to find out wi-fi does not work, or you GPS is incredibly inacurate.
Thanks for the info!
I'm testing it tomorow or the day after.
Whats your thoughts on the battery life?

Battery life is surprisingly good for me. After the first couple days i easily get over 12 hours before reaching 20%. Must say i love that the phone drains almost no battery when listening to music in my experiences.

The wifi issue normally doesnt substantiate until a couple of weeks in use, and so does the screen flickering issue. So far popular know issues include:
1) Bad battery life (~ 2 hr of screen time)
2) Over heating after 5-10minutes in use
3) GPS issue
4) Screen flex issue
5) Screen flickering (mostly solved)
6) Antenna issue
7) 3G connection
8) Gaps
9) Sense issues
And before you buy this you should pray to your lucky star that you wont get a dud one. I've seen people on this forum going thru so much stress w HTC and this phone.
Battery life there are days I think not bad and on others I ask myself what the hell? Despite having my phone for around 4 or 5 months I still do notice drops of 3-5% in battery life. I can't really make my mind up for this device. I can't tell if htc is going to improve anything on this device anymore or if that's just as good as it gets. It'll be best if you just end up expecting nothing from HTC. That will save you from having expectations that wont be met anyway.
Edit: by the way there is a battery life thread with a trillion posts in it. Just open it and come up with a conclusion yourself. Be warned though, you might see people with around 5 to 6 hours of screen time which seems really questionable to me. I would say the people posting screen times of anywhere between 2 to 4 hours 30 minutes screen time are legit.

Well, I come from the LG world of not giving a Sh!t about costumers...
How's the HTC support treating those cases?
You think it is a bad buy?

One X user (Tegra version) since one week. Switched to the CM10 preview this weekend. Very good phone, battery life is on par with the rest. If you check the points mentioned above (also make sure the power and volume buttons are responsive), that sounds like a good deal. ROM community is very active, JB support already almost flawless. Also, the screen is the best I have seen on a phone so far.

Just go get a sgs3. You can expect a crappy design plus a display not as nice as the one x in my opinion. But you also get to have a better performance, little to no lag, much better battery life.probably less hardware faults etc. (You at least know what you can expect and you actually get it)

Honestly I think HTC has been playing the blame games and time buying strategies to the extent of ignoring customers and treating like crap. But still better than LG as far as I have known. And as someone has said, if you want a better chance of getting a drama free phone better get the SGS3, as much as I hate Samsung. But you're not gonna have that beautiful hardware and AMAZING screen (funny how i say this since I dont own it lol).
This is a co-worker who's selling its ONE X, so no S3 option for me...
I'm having a lot of trouble in knowing what to focus on, because from what I see (read), there are issues (as with every single phone), and I think the important part is the support by HTC being good.
On that point (HTC support), what do you think? Any experience with them?

Long term htc users: "HTC supporrt is great, they might lack a little at first, but sooner or later(probably they mean later) they will just nail the update properly and it will all function nicely."
first time HTC user(myself): i've yet to see any of the support and i honestly feel like i'm not in good hands but i'm still open for them to prove it. The only reason i haven't completely given up on htc is because of the people who have been with htc for a much longer time. They seem to have a much different opinion of HTC and their updates and what not.
Oh yeah, not to forget, rooting/flashing can void your warranty *HIGH FIVE*
in my opinion to have your HOX function properly, you're gonna want to root.
edit: since it's a co-worker you're probably going to be getting it cheaper, right? Which will probably make the OneX more worthy of its price.
First thing you're going to want to do is check if his bootloader says "unlocked" or "relocked" or "locked" - this would make it possible for you to lower the price and get it even cheaper
Well on the update point, I think LG just trumps every single brand on the market... They simple don't give us any... LOL
Regarding the list of possible issues, do you think it can be easily observed? or its more of a wear-by-time kind of thing?

Honestly! When i got this phone i was the happiest person on earth until i noticed a few problems here and there and this just ruined the overall user experience. There's something about this phone that tells me i want to keep it. Design is gorgeous, sometimes i just turn the phone around just to admire the awesome look of how it's built. When the problems start to pile up, however, you get really unsatisfied.
With later batches i heard the phone is supposed to be pretty good and problem-free. I believe the main issues that you won't see immediately is the WLAN issue and maybe a bit of a screen gap. Haven't really been hearing much of the flicker issues anymore.
How to notice the WiFi issue i'd suggest a google search or for you to look around @ xda forums. I don't really feel like explaining it. Actually, youtube should help you in this case --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKCJ4Ab2tIo
Well, being a smartphone user for some time, I can relate with that feeling...
I'm going to buy it, sell my O3D, and may the gods of smartphone be with me!
Thank you so much for your help.
P.S. It will cost me €300, being that here in Pt, a new unlocked one costs €700...

I wouldn't worry too much about it, anything that goes wrong will be covered by the warranty anway.

Buying a new one will have less chances of defects, as new models are more bugfree

Well,
The seller (co-worker and friend) reports none of the liste issues. No wi-fi problem, no screen problem, and general usage with no hick-ups.
Is used it for about a month. And, furtunatly for me, he's more of an iPhone guy hehe
