wm6.5 ROM for Sprint/HTC EVO 4G Android phone? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I was very disappointed when Sprint decided not to get the HTC HD2, which run on the wm6.5/HTC Sense. I am deciding to leave Sprint for T-mobile, which will have it, but I found out that Sprint will have the HTC EVO coming up in summer of 2010, and this phone has better hardware than HTC HD2. The problme is that EVO will be running on the Android platform, but I love wm6.5 because it is the most versatile operating system, especially since it can do more than any operating software like PDF reader, multitasking, copy and paste, third party apps from 3rd party sites, force roam mode for CDMA, indirect Adobe Flash support through the Skyfire browser, etc.
So is there any way to come up with a ROM to put wm6.5/HTC Sense software on the Sprint/HTC EVO 4G when it comes out? I am willing to pay.

I feel exactly the same way!

Count me in.

I agree!
I am currently with AT&T. The perfect phone would be the EVO running WinMo6.5, upgradeable to win phone 7, flashed with an awesome rom...
I have done a ridiculous amount of research and this is the best option... =)
God do I hope AT&T will come out with a version of the hd2. It would suck to have to wait till the first gen win phone 7 phones come out next Nov...
I will be following this forum to see if anything comes out of the EVO option.

AT&T Evo
Yeah I'm on AT&T too - and now they've announced no more unlimited data plans - so I'm definitely going to jump ship as soon as I find the carrier with an EVO Class hardware and Windows Mobile. Sux too cause I've been grandfathering my $20/month data plan with AT&T for years now. But they won't even let me keep it anymore when I upgrade my phone so Piss on them. I'm so done with their b.s. I need full ActiveSync support so no Android for me.

Vogue Radio, GPS/WIFI ?

The Vogue has the same hardware inside than the TyTN2/Kaiser.
Can we imagine flash the Radio ROM from the Kaiser to the Vogue and get access to the wifi and the GPS options ?
or have an own cooked ROM to open the access to this ?
Any idea on this ?
[edit]
uhm ... you have right! chipset have the ability ... i have get yestersday my new working handy! i will try some cross mixes with the kaiser rom.
I am also very interested by the outcome of this tweak.
Cheers from Brussels!
The TyTN II/Kaiser is GSM, the HTC Vogue is the CMDA Touch... So the radio will not probably work...

The Vogue does NOT have the same hardware as the Kaiser. If you flash the Kaiser rom on your Vogue, you are likely to brick it.
The vogue has a Qualcomm MSM7500 chipset, where as the Kaiser has Qualcomm MSM7200 chipset. Very similar, but not the same.
Either way, I am very confident that the Vogue has GPS capiblities that may or may not be unlocked in a future rom update (possibly at the same time as a EV-DO Rev A. update comes out, but that is hearsay). I say this because the MSM7500 chipset has a GPSone unit built in. It is capable of running as an aGPS chip or a standalone GPS, if the rom allows it to, like the Kaiser's does. This chip is included due to FCC regulations for E911 service.
WiFi is another question. The MSM7500 chip does not have a wifi radio built in, but it does support one on the SDIO bus. I can't see why they would go through the trouble of adding a WiFi radio, only disable it. I suppose it is possible, but until someone gets some good pictures of the guts of the Vogue or comes out with a ROM or hack that enables WiFi, I am not inclined to believe that there is a WiFi radio on the unit.
spectec makes a wifi card, only prob is, it probably has a terrible range!
Regardless if it has terrible range or not, it would be nice if the company will get off its butt and sell that card. They have been promising about it for months and still nothing.

Sorry all guys, I'm not tallking about the Vogue but about the "Touc Dual"....
Will repost in the good category...
Isn't it stated in the HTC website (http://www.asia.htc.com/Asia/SEA/products/pda_Touch_Dual/pda_Touch_Dual.html) that the chipset is Qualcomm® MSM 7200, 400MHz ???
waiting for the HTC Nike forum then...
but I am still interested whether the vogue may be enabled with GPS/Wifi as well

The Touch Dual is a MSM7200 chip set. But it is a GSM phone and has more in common with the Kaiser than it does with the Vogue
we will have to wait n see
Well fellows I have good news and bad news. Good news is I work for a corporate RadioShack that sells the Touch(Vogue) and am able to play with brand new, out of the box Touch's. I can find out for sure if the newer versions(which I know for a fact are EV-DO Rev A capable), are also equipped with WIFI. The bad news is that my store has been sold of them since we got them in and they have been selling out before we get any in stock leaving us with a backorder. As soon as the hype slows down and I get a chance to actually get my hands on one(I plan on buying one soon and getting rid of my Mogul very soon) and play with it I will get online and let you guys know.
When I buy my Touch, it will already be the new EV-DO Rev A model and if it is capable of WIFI, I will release a dump of the ROM for you guys to disect but until then thats the best I can do.
UPDATES will follow.

It's my pleasure. Think of it as my way of giving back to the community. It might be a little while though because like I said, we're constantly sold out. As soon as I can get some solid information for you guys and as soon as I buy my own, I will post a link to a ROM dump as a base for building custom ROMs but again, this might take a little time so please be patient with me.
Good luck waiting. The Rev A/A-GPS update for SPRINT Touch won't be available until Q1/Q2 2008 and won't just be available for new devices sold through Sprint. It'll be posted on HTC's support website, thus a rom dump or whatever you're talking about isn't required--people can get the rom update themselves.

Isn't Q1/Q2 2008 soon coming ......If I'm not mistaken we're currently in Q4 2007..... unless their FY doesn't match CY...... please confirm!

Yes they can but if I can get the dump out before that, it'll help in the mean time. And as for the EV-DO Rev A capabilities, they ARE available on the new Moguls and Touchs available through Sprint. I'm not talking about one that might have been purchased through Sprint a few months ago, I am talking about the ones we have IN OUR STORE. Why do you think I would lie about this? Did you not read my other post? Or even my signature? I am a an employee at a Corporate RadioShack and am also a Representative of Sprint. As for information I cannot obtain in-store, I can call MY Sprint Rep, Julie, and get whatever information I need. The only reason I haven't yet is because she is always busy and rarely answers her phone.
Stay positive, I'm gonna do what I can whether you care or not. This is for the others that actually DO care.
UPDATE
Alright. Here is my first update as I promised. We finally got a Touch in at our store and I was able to sit down and play with it as I was selling it to a customer and I can CONFIRM that IT DOES have EV-DO Rev A capabilities but WIFI is NOT present.
After noticing this, I called my Sprint Rep Julie and asked her why, if she knew, would the Touch be left without WIFI and she said it had something to do with sales but she didn't have a lot of information. After this I contacted a close friend of mine who is an executive at the Sprint Kansas City Division Office(he will be left un-named) and asked him the same question: Will there be a ROM update for the Touch that would enable WIFI and if not, why would the Touch be left without WIFI? I told him that I knew that the chipset has WIFI capabilities but there is no USABLE WIFI on the device whatsoever. He then told me that during the later development stages of the Touch, it was decided that the internal GPS/WIFI antenna would be removed.
Having confirmed that there was in fact no internal GPS/WIFI internal antenna for the Touch and that WIFI would never be supported on the Touch, I then asked him WHY Sprint would do this to the most sophisticated Windows Mobile Touch Screen Phone ever made(aside from Apple's monstrosity). His response was simple: "We had the GPS/WIFI antenna removed to get customers to pay the extra money for the EV-DO Rev A wireless internet. Without WIFI, if customers wanted to use the internet features on their phone, they would be forced to pay the extra money for the data package or face an extremely high phone bill. Win Win situation for us."
I was shocked to hear this. Every other Windows Mobile based touch screen phone made by HTC has had WIFI and or GPS capabilities. It's rather disappointing to hear this coming from a Sprint Executive but at the same time, can you honestly blame the nations largest wireless cell phone provider with the worst customer service for doing something like this? It's almost expected in my opinion.
Update complete. Sorry for the bad news folks.

Verizon Version of the HTC Touch 2 Questions

I currently have an iPhone 3Gs which I like but the Touch2 is looking pretty nice. I'm thinking of leaving AT&T and going with the Touch2 using Verizon. Most of the ROMs I have seen here are for T-Mobile, my question is - can they be used on a Verizon phone? I have a couple of more questions if you don't mind:
1. Since I may be getting a new Touch2 - would it be wise to upgrade WM6.1 to 6.5 right off the bat - before even adding contacts, etc?
2. Can the Verizon version be update to 6.5 and is it safe and stable?
3. Which ROM would you recommend using? I'd rather have speed than 'pretty'.
I'm new to this and did not even know ROMs were available since the iPhone does not use one.
Thanks all,
MasterJack
BTW, I did a search for Verizon but not much came up.
1. No 6.5 for VZ out yet
2. Once 6.5 is officially released or HSPL becomes available
3. No HSPL out for VZ yet, so no custom ROMs
Bummer - sounds like I'm S.O.L. for now - maybe I'll just keep my iPhone until 6.5 and ROMs are available..... thank you.
you will be able to update it to 6.5 and use custom roms eventually, but not yet. just install windows phone on the phone and sync your contacts with it and when you instal a new rom you can sync them back onto the phone, pictures, ringtones, anything you put in their info. also, check sprint a lot cheaper monly plan, with the lowest minutes its $70/month on verizon (they make you get data). The Sprint Touch Pro2 should be around the T-Mobile ($150) / Verizon ($200) price range when its for sale in stores (10/11) and online through other retailers.
btw, some guy on my local craigslist will give u his tmobile touch pro2 for ur iphone if ur near chicago.

Thanks for your reply. I have never checked out Sprint - how is their coverage compared to Verizon? How does the TP2 Sprint compare to the TP2 Verizoin - hardware-wise?
Hardware wise they are the same. As for coverage, go to each of their sites and click "coverage map". There is a link right on their front pages.
How about the AT&T version due out soon - would it be wise to wait for that one or go with Verizon's version? Will AT&T's version be any better?

There is speculation that the AT&T version will ship with WM 6.5... Other then that, the only real difference is in the Carrier. Verizon is CDMA - mostly North America Service - Has an international option for GSM. AT&T will be GSM standard and will also allow for custom ROM's...
I have used Verizon and AT&T for work and Verizon seems like the better network in the US. I am personally waiting for the AT&T version.. (Same carrier I am on now.)
Why the desire for 6.5 so bad? Not much is different.
The stock ROM on the Verizon version is surprisingly good. Unless there is earth shattering improvements I doubt I'll flash it at this point.
No matter what, out of the box, this phone blows the iphone away!
Just finally took a look at one today at a T-Mobile store. Very nice unit - not as reponsive as my iPhone but it makes up in many other areas. I just saw that AT&T will have one soon - what's the advantage of that one over let's say Verizon? I just got my 3Gs a couple of months ago so I would have to break my contract with AT&T to get one - weather I get one from them (just break it and re-sign up if I can) or go with Verizon. My thought is that Verizon has better coverage here in Houston.
What about the Samsung Omnia II - seems very nice - which carriers will carry it?
Thx,
MasterJack

Agreed, with GPS working and the stock ROM running well (for me) I'll wait for official 6.5 (as it is better than the HTC TouchFlo interface IMO). Though I am sure once it is cracked I won't be able to resist, but it is saying something that that I am not dying to upgrade it. As an old Touch and Touch Pro user this stock experience isn't even in the same league.
So if I go with the Verizon version - you recommend no changing anything? Just leave it alone until 6.5 comes out?
What's good site to learn about what's new with 6.5 as it relates to this phone?
Thx,
MasterJack

You really don't have a choice with the Version Phone.. You can not add new ROM's until somene creates a HARD SPL for the CDMA phones. Once that is created, it provides the ability to make changes to the base OS.
I really dont like AT&T. I have gone back to them on 2 different occasions and left becuase of the same issues. There are days where they work great. There are other days where in areas you had full signal in, you will drop a call or be searching for service. AT&T's network just isnt as mature as Verizons. I have traveled all over the US for work and verizon is always the best.
One thing i am going to add....The only thing that is nice about AT&T is there handset freedom. But they are even managing to take that away from there clients.
I agree on the service area... Verizon's network is the best in the US...
I have moved my company to AT&T for two reasons... They used to get hardware out before anyone else (Tilt) and I can use the phones in Europe and Mexico with out issue. (Verizon works in Mexico but is expensive).
this is out for verizon right? i got it for tmobile and i love it so since my gf is looking for a new phone i will recommend it even tho she wants a black berry

Nexus1/HTC Desire or the HD2?

I might be upgrading from the Dash in the next couple of months and I am currently with T-Mobile (month-to-month). I have always wanted an Android phone, but I am also considering WM HD2. I am not sure if the Desire/Bravo is still T-Mobile bound - I hear it could be Verizon.
I am mainly considering HD2 b/c it is claimed to be WP7 ready and should be able to dual boot w/Android.
What are your thoughts?

[Q] Sprint Motorola Droid Pro Thread Mods ?

Hi All,
Just switched from ATT to sprint to try out the Motorola XPRT was wondering if we can either start a new thread on the sprint version or not? Or a seperate thread on main forum just for the Sprint Version? A little about me....
Always been into phones, Currently have Blackberry Torch AT&T and a HTC Desire Z unbranded. ATT service sucks in the new condo I purchased and I been eying the droid pro since It was been released on VZW but I refuse to be raped by the plans lol... I have so many diffrent smart phones its ridiculous but just wanted to put this out there because I love this phone so far except that it does suck in direct sunlight unless brightness is turned almost to 75%. I already tried to see if the radio frequencies were locked by putting in my gf att sim card and it said no gsm networks detected..
I just wanted to see if someone would be willing to work on getting this rooted so we can enjoy some fun.
I already tried Z4 root all in one root no go...
I am up for trying some things out as I am in withing my 30 day trial period
Froyo or Gingerbread? Gingerbread is so far unrootable, while Froyo is rootable using aroot or superoneclick
Its froyo 2.2.2 ill try using aroot....
Sent from my MB612 using XDA App
WOW I shouldve looked more...But I just used"Superoneclick" root install method using the universal root and it worked. I am rooted.
I realize the Sprint Motorola XPRT is a retread of the Droid Pro (with a better battery), but to release it with Froyo and 3G-only made it a questionable move in my mind (I considered it), even if the target market was Blackberry users.

I feel quite the oppisite, I'm glad its 3g only because $10 less a month on my bill and until Sprint gets wimax/lte on a better band imo sprints 4g sucks.....I have the evo shift and have used the og evo and for the most part unless you are within 8 blocks from the tower it disconnects frequently and hangs....
Having froyo at launch was a plus since rooting was done using 1 click and in the evo shift forums gingerbread doesnt have an exploit yet....

Getting new Nexus 6, looking for the most freedom

I'm looking at both AT&T and Verizon services. Ideally I'd like to get a Nexus 6 that could work with both of them, should I decide to migrate. If I get a carrier-specific phone I want to flash it to Google defaults. I really don't like carrier-specific apps or other hooks. And I don't want to have to wait for the carrier to approve an OS version before I get it. I played that game with T-Mobile and never got a single update for Gingerbread, and Verizon had a huge delay before offering 5.1 to Nexus users. I want freedom from their whims.
1) Are there any special technical or business concerns about flashing the phones from either operator? Do any of these companies deny service (anymore) if we dump their company-approved OS?
2) Is it getting too late to just now buy into a Nexus 6? Is there a replacement for this on the near horizon? I don't want to pay full price for hardware that's getting obsoleted by the carrier or Google as I walk out the door. Google already says on their factory OS page that some phones (generally over 18 months old) may no longer be able to upgrade. I think the Nexus 6 is getting close to that line.
3) And given the choice between getting a phone from some third-party, or from the operator, it looks like (because of the age of this device?) some of them are offered for less than US$400, but the operators still charge $600+. Are there any do's and don'ts about buying from a third party and then asking one these "big two" companies to use it on their network? I know/believe that for an LTE network we don't need to get an unlocked phone, which only applies to the SIM for GSM. But is there any other way that an off-the-shelf Nexus can be incompatible (for business or technical reasons) with one of these carriers?
Thanks.
This might not be the best spot to ask since it's the galaxy nexus specific forum
