I came across this post on PocketNow.com:
http://pocketnow.com/software-1/a-very-cool-backup-feature-to-debut-on-htc-desire-and-legend
This went a bit under the radar. The HTC Desire and Legend will both have a backup feature that will automatically backup certain system elements to your microSD card, so that in case you need to factory reset your device, or swap ROMs, you can easily get everything back in a Restore step that occurs when the operating system starts up for the first time. Here's the list of what is backed up:
- Text messages and MMS
- Application settings for the messaging
- Favorites of the browser page (Internet applications)
- Dictionary of Keyboard
- Settings
- Regular and wireless networks
- Sound and display
- Location
- Applications
- Date and Time
- Language and keyboard - only locale
- Setting on the backup copy is located in the mail
It's likely that we'll see this very useful feature going forward on HTC's devices.

Nice ... nice ... nice ...
great, .. but considering that it is a "phone" wouldn't it be wise to back up the "contacts list" also? like thumbnails, emails and other info about the contacts.... and calender? Lol

You can save your contacts from google contacts to your PC.
If you were to wipe your phone, the phone would just sync the contacts back from google contacts anyway so it would be pretty pointless.

I'm not exactly sure how it looks when setting up contacts, but always use google and not phone. All contacts and calender events are then saving to your google account, whicj can be accessed from any computer. If you switch phones and it supports google, you just reenter your info and WaLa! you have your contacts and calander back on your phone. That is why they are not saved on SD Card---And you are more likely to erase data on SD Card then from google.

i see your points, am used to nokia devices (old nokia devices) so was thinking from that perspective
thanx for clarifying though!
When using this backup feature from HTC, it will automatically backing up when there is a change. From the HTC Desire user manual:
Page 205
Backing up phone data
Your phone features an automatic backup system that backs up your web browser
bookmarks, messages, dictionary, and settings, to the microSD card. The phone automatically
backs up the data whenever a change occurs.

My question, is there any option to automatically backup on specific time of day? like midnight ... Or a widget to launch / execute the backup process manually?
Because I don't like this kind of automation, I am afraid it will drain some more battery for unnecessary change check.
my question is how to restore from this backup? for e.g restore internet bookmarks?
When will it be arriving?
didn't this feature stop working with FroYo?
Right.
HTC said that google was the reason for this function to be canceled as I remeber. I think el goog wanted the backup to be made only on their servers or sort of that.
You can still find a backup from the day you installed 2.2, it will be too old though.

What did you expect it to do? Download them fresh every time and hold them in program memory so you've got no space to run the OS?
well i only wanted some picture for my favorite contact and link them to their facebook account
didnt want 2000 profile picture and infos on my phone !

damn that sux.cant store it into SD at least?
I have just tried to re-sync my facebook contacts with my htc desire (previously had them on but wiped them all because I was annoyed about seeing people who i never wanted to phone in my phone list)
But now it just keeps on coming up with "process has stopped" error after I do it and doesn't seem to sync?
Has this happened to anyone else?
Why can't android just have a system where you individually link each contact in your people list with a facebook account??
I'd say add their photos manually to your google account (but unfortunately you'll face the bug of low quality images). Or create a fresh Facebook account for your favorites

You can individually connect/disconnect contacts in your phone/ google with their facebook accounts if you use Facebook for HTC Sense, with the "link" icon on the top-right corner or the Sync Tab in the contact details card. Then uncheck Facebook in People>Menu>View
Whenever I try to link a contact with Facebook, it comes up with no matches found, like I dont have my facebook linked to my phone.
As i said, when I try to sync my facebook contacts the phone says the process has had to be stopped running (error message)

If it's not a problem for you do a factory reset.
On another note, if you just signed into your facebook account, wait a bit as sometimes it takes time to sync, especially with many facebook friends.
a factory reset doesn't delete anything on my sd card does it, just my downloaded apps and contacts/accounts etc?
Can i back stuff up before I do it?

No it doesn't.
What stuff do you want to backup? The phone system, built-in backup should restore your messages, bookmarks and personal settings.
You can find that in Settings>Privacy
I love my Evo but one problem I seem to have is getting my pictures from my people to match their current Facebook picture. When I originally linked all the contacts in my people it was correct to their pictures at the time but that was 2 months ago. Now, everyones picture is still the same as it was back then even though I go to accounts->sync every day and have it on auto sync for every 4 hours. Does anyone know how to fix this bug on my phone? I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
I've done it by selecting settings, applications, manage applications, all tab, then select contacts storage and clear data... now your contacts must be backed up on google otherwise you'll lose all your contacts.. and just sync, sync sync
sorry for the noob response but how do i back them up with google?

If your contacts are created in your google account, meaning if you can log into gmail on your computer and your contacts are there, then they are already backed up.
If you create contacts on the internal phone storage, you are sol.
Go to people and hit menu and choose import/export. Back up the contacts that are on the internal phone storage to your sd card. Open up gmail in your pc browser and import those contacts to your gmail contacts, using the file that you backed up to the card.
Or what you can do is go to settings, accounts & sync and select facebook for htc sense, remove account, the add the account back

okay i did that and now only like 1/4th of my people have the little FB icon on the bottom left and only the people with the icon have statuses under their name. Also, when I try to link the people without the facebook icon, that person's name will not be on the list but if i choose someone else to link that first person's name is there. sorry if im confusing you guys haha I know its something small I just like to have everything right on my phone.
Wow people here are doing this the hard way. There is a facebook picture app that syncs your FB contacts picture. The other way is to just log out of facebook AND AND AND AND AND facebook for htc sense. then just log back into them both. easy as pie.
Every now and then my contacts will be lost and in setting > Google > Sync Contacts will say it synced but all my contacts are gone. Some times I can just re sync and it works but other times it doesn't. Is there a way for this to not happen?
Or sometimes it will say Sync Contacts has an error and will not sync to Google and I'll have different contacts on my phone and on Google contacts

make sure when you save a new contact that the name is saved as a gmail contact and not on your phone. there are actually two contact "books" on you phone, the internal phone contacts and the gmail contacts.

Personally never had that issue. Occasionally sync goes down for a minute, then comes back up. If you are like me and keep sync off and changes roms, if you added a contact and didn't sync, you could miss a few that were added.
So i'd jut double check to be safe.

What ROM are you using? Stock, Stock rooted, TW-based, AOSP (4.1.2, 4.2.1, or 4.2.2)? I've ran all of these (and then some) and haven't run into anything like this, but if it's ROM-specific, knowing what you're running will help narrow it down.
Cheers!

Sometimes my phone log just shows numbers and when I check my contact list it's empty.
Reboot phone and they are all back. My contacts are on Google but was wondering if there is a way to store them on the phone also.
Some way to download to a file on the phone?

Go to the contacts app, press menu > export
Then select the account and it'll export to your scarf as a CSV file
There are also apps that let you import/export your contacts as an XML file

Lol "scarf", sorry about that i meant "sdcard"
Dang autocorrect!!
I use a calendar program called Jorte. It allows me to either save my events on my phone or sync with Google Calendar. I refuse to deal with Google anything (except GMail) and Jorte saves the day.
What I cannot find is a Dialer with Contacts List that DOES NOT sync with Google Contacts. I really do not want my contacts residing on someone's server. I know it is too late and they now have the data, but new and future contacts I prefer to keep private.
So, a Stand Alone Contacts List that will link to the dialer and reside all contacts either on the phone or SD Card (for XT1045 owners). Is there anything out there that already exists or could one of our fantastic developers throw a simple apk together for us?
Thanks for reading.
I don't like my contacts to be on server, too. You just don't sync. Furthermore, I also use standalone calendar which doesn't sync with Google.

Jazzh, if I don't sync, or disconnect from my gmail account, my contact go away. Did you find a work around for that? I wonder if I were to put them in the favorites they would be basically saved to the phone. Hmmm...
Which rom do you have?
On every rom I had I could do what I described. And my contacts are not being deleted in any way...

Well, I thought I had done that before but did not work. I just tried it again (per you recommendation) and now it worked. I cleared out my Google Contacts list and the phone still shows the contacts. Thanks.
Glad it worked out for you . Cheers !
Hi,
This might seem strange but I would like to configure my Z1 in such a way that Google knows at least as possible about my life. If possible, I would like to use only Gmail and nothing else from Google.
Recently, I activated sync for the first time because I wanted the state of mails to be the same on my phone as my computer which came with a number of unwanted side-effects:
- I got an error message that the number of contacts to be deleted was too large. I immediately said cancel as I did not want to delete contacts. Moreover, I do not want that my phone contacts were copied into my Google contacts. I see no reason why I would store phone numbers in my Google contacts, I only want to use Google for email. Clearly, it was too late: all the phone numbers are now also stored in Google contacts -- information I did not want to share with google.
- my complete calendar was copied in Google Calendar. When I started using the Z1, I deliberately choose the standard Calendar from the Z1 as I do not want that Google stores information about my calendar and find it very, very uncomfartable that my personal Calendar is now data stored on a Google server.
Is it possible to get rid of Google Calendar without losing Gmail?
Is it possible to limit sync only to mail itself?
I would appreciate any advice on how I can maximize my privacy while keeping my phone "smart".
Try to ask Munjeni in his thread about his privacy guard rom his is a master of privacy

Just open your Google account in the settings menu, under the sync options uncheck everything but Gmail. That should stop sync of your contacts, people, calendar, chrome etc...

Leave sync off, it only eats battery.
Just remember to press 'refresh' when you open the Gmail app. You won't get status bar messages about your Gmail, but if you check manually couple of times a day, then you've saved yourself all the syncronisation agro.
I had the same problem with contacts and I didn't want all my email contacts ending up listed as contacts in my phone, as it makes sending group texts impossible, it kept defaulting to sending MMS instaed, because some contacts were email addresses. Grr.
So I made up another gmail account, that's blank, has no contacts. Then I log into the phone with that and let the phone set up with that account. Once it's done all the syncronising I added my real gmail account, but set to not syncornise. I just manaully sync when I open the Gmail app, saves all the problems.
There are a couple of apps that can help.
Afwall+, which is a good firewall. You can set which apps use your wifi and which apps use mobile data, or just stop apps dialing out altogether.
There's a mention above of Privacy Gaurd, but it's very basic and I'm not sure it works with 'system' apps like google. I would recomend DonkeyGuard, it's by far the easiest and most comprehensive way of regulating what apps see what information on your phone. To make it work you will need to have a rooted phone, as well as having Xposed installed. But if you are serious about your privacy, then you know that it's worth the effort.
To have Google unaware about your phone contacts and calendar you need create contacts/events as device contact/event, not bound to Google account. There is setting for that, make it default.
First time I wanted separate google from my personal data I deleted google account on my phone as no other method worked, I lost all my contacts as by default they were assigned to google.
I was better than that. I had backup, restored contacts as device ones.
From this moment I have my info private (hope so, possibly information leaks in background but it is over anyone's head, some things are deeply hardcoded in OS then you can do nothing).
Sometimes you HAVE to give Google some information.
There is Xposed module which provides FALSE info in such cases. Sufficient solution for me.
Unfortunately it doesn't work for native applications (not sure about it).

Thanks! I see indeed that when I create an event, I can choose the account to which the event is assigned. Google is standard for the moment.
Where can I set device account as the standard for contacts/events? I do not see such an option in the settings of Calendar or Contacts...
Also, it appears that I cannot change the account to which an already created event is assigned to.
Is it possible to move all created events in the Calendar from Google account to device account?
My phone runs on the 14.4.A.157 official build -- it is not rooted and I prefer to stay on the official Sony release channel.

Not sure. It was long ago. Cannot find now.
Maybe it will help you if I tell that I froze GoogleBackupTransport.apk, GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk, GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk.
2.
I did it in such way:
a) made backup.
b) deleted google account from my phone.
c) defined acount again.
d) configured it as don't-synchronize (somewhere in synchronization settings).
e) restored contacts from backup. At this point I was asked if i want restore them to my google account or to device. I chose the latter.

Did you perform the backup and restore with Sony PC Companion or did you use some other tool for this?
Does this mean that you also have the option to restore all events in Calendar and change the account to which they are assigned to as well?

No. In fact I do more than one type of backup.
You never know what will really work unless you try.
I used native Easy Backup app and exported contacts to file directly, there is such option when listing contacts.
Don't remember what else but you can find tons of applications of this sort.
I could restore calendar, too.
I think if you freeze apk's which I mentioned earlier - even Google will not be able to pull your info because will have no tool to do it.
If you want to delete your contacts from Google Contacts, you can go to https://www.google.com/contacts/, you can also export contacts to pc/phone
Well. Myself I am convinced that once they got information - they will keep it forever, you only will not see it.

I think the same too.
In fact it is lost case.
Security agency can compile information, add together Google info|Facebook|Twitter|LinkedIn|Microsoft (Skype) | phone number which I had to give Google | biometric passport photo | fingerprints required for passport and hell knows what else, DNA maybe.
Conclusion:
