what are the benefits of using Custom rom ? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

So my question is what are the benefits of a costum rom ? Is a Stock rom very bad ? Can you do more with a Costum Rom ? Please give me a anwser

They're not full of bulky crap that carriers put into the rom.
Much smoother and more customizable, quicker also.
The Chef's do great jobs on what they do.
Try them out, you'll see how the benefit your phone.

To answer that question...
Every rom is dependent on the "tastes" of the user.
I use stock, I went back TO stock after trying some custom roms. For me, stock was more reliable and I simply removed shortcuts and some minor reg tweaks to keep any Tmo bloat from working.
If I knew HOW to cook a rom, I'd say that custom would be best, as I would create my rom for my personal tastes...with my particular apps already cooked in, and certain apps removed.
Unfortunately the great chef's here must cater to the masses, so while the various roms I tried were all very good, they did not FIT ME.
You have to try out various roms until you find one you like. Custom roms are great because they are cutting edge. Our chef's are at the front lines to improving HTC/WinMo roms. If you are like me, and need a rom for pure stability without added social networks or video stuff, etc, and are willing to give up eye-candy and even a little speed, then stock may be for you.
Just please don't ask WHICH rom to try...because your answer can be found in the second sentence of this post!!

Custom ROMs will have some added applications...facebook, twitter, TV...In all honestly the two fastest ROMs I have used so far are VZW's stock 6.1 and MightyROM. Figure out what you like your phone to do, do some footwork and you will find the perfect solution (which there are many WinMo apps that you can use).

But that "TMO Bloat" is also taking up space in the ROM. The custom ROMs can remove the files, increasing storage.
I myself am still stock, and may well remain that way. I have used the cooked ROM in the past, with my Magician, but I bought this phone from T-Mobile and I don't want to Hard SPL. Also, it is working OK for me.

Speed and stability. Plus you dont get a load of apps you probably wont use.
Memory is another one. I found after moving to a custom ROM i had loads of RAM left over.
Your not locked down as much with a stock/branded ROM either.
Like akashastega said, your gonna have to look around and try some ROMs for yourself to find the right one for your needs.
There are so many to choose from.
But if you do decide to try out some custom ROMs your gonna need to research a bit.
Start with HSPL:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550131
This is needed to allow Custom ROMs to be flashed
Once your done with that, here's a list of Custom ROMs (this is where i started to get a feel for Custom ROMs):

The latest and greatest are always being updated in the 'Windows Mobile ROM Developement' thread:

And lastly, if you get stuck at any point. Here's a great guide on flashing a ROM:

Yes the bloat is still there, and it does waste space, but at least for me, I have disabled most of it, so my speeds are better and I haven't lost stability.
Custom roms DO remove this, but sadly many of them add apps I don't need and would never use. One of these days I will get my head out of my a$$ and learn to cook, then custom will be the way to go HANDS DOWN.
Good luck to the OP and finding the right rom for your needs. I'd suggest making a list of what is necessary for YOU, and what you can sacrifice. Once you have that list, finding a rom will be an easier task. For me, I needed absolute stability. I needed a working calendar/schedule. I needed 100% phone capabilities including BT. Then I wanted a decent media center, some games to kill time with, some ebook readers. My life is a busy mom, I need to stay on task, on time, and maybe help my kids kill some time while we are waiting somewhere.
A business minded person may absolutely need push email, instant messaging, texts, office.
A student may want office, internet, facebook, texts...
What do you need? Figure that out first, then test roms that fit your needs.

Advanced Config Tool vs Custom ROM

I've got a stock Sprint ROM in which I'm using the Advanced Config Tool and I'm curious is a custom ROM would be significantly better (faster, longer battery life, etc). Anyone have any insight on this matter?
I had a Touch that I bounced around to various ROMS, only go to back to stock Sprint for the stability. So, rather then doing the same with the Diamond, I'm looking for some advise as to what I'm getting already (with the advanced config tool).

just try the tool for your self....whats the worst you can do...a hardrest
if you mess things up
Oh no, I am using the tool and I like it. I was just curious if anyone knows how much faster an all out custom ROM would be... Yes, I could flash some myself, but that would be a lot of work if I just have to go back to stock (as I did with the Touch). But, if the custom ROM is significantly better then the advanced config tool alone, then I might consider giving it a try.

I tweaked my phone as much as i could and did improve but Shine On 2.4 is faster!
I would rather use a cooked Rom because, the the chefs (almost ) always know what they're doing, and they have the experience with tweaking to perfection.
Sometimes when they experiment with things it causes unstability, but they're only doing it to develope the perfect Rom. When using the cooked Rom's you alsow contribute to the chef work, and to this forum, in the search for perfection.

Significantly faster....no question!
Why?? Lots of reasons...from more available memory ("junk" removed), better memory management to page pooling up to 16mB
Most likely more stable as well (if using a well tested ROM)
Read thru the posts and convince yourself.........
You can only do so much tweaking with registry and/or Advanced Config. Further improvements needs to be cooked into the ROM.
Ok... So it sounds like there is fairly significant difference between the tweak tool and a custom rom. I had figured as much, but I was hoping the tool would have been close, because I just got all my icons set up perfectly.
But, I hate having the knowledge that the phone could be better, faster, etc. Too bad HTC or Sprint or whoever couldn't just get it right from the start! Oh well, I'm going to try a custom ROM one of these days...
Thanks Gang! Oh, and a bit off topic, but when I go to the custom ROM, I'm going to lose the Sprint crap, but the one item I actually use is Sprint music. I bet I can find a cab with it, but I am also going to lose the Sprint Music icon on the Music tab of TF3d. Any way to get it back there? Thanks.
I think AlphaZero has a ROM called "V7 SprintFlavor" that has all the Sprint stuff. Check it out.

Recommondation, please?

Hi all,
I've been pretty much doing other stuff since I reinstalled my phone with ShineOn 2.1 a few (?) months back. Now I need to reinstall it and figured I might as well uprade when I'm at it.
Could anyone recommend something? I was actually planning on using ShineOn 2.4l since I really like the way it works, but it seems like it's dead...And being "so old", I would guess it's not a 2.03 ROM?
So...anyone up to date care to give me a recommondation? It'd really be appreciated!
I like the AZTOR rom.
It's fast and stable.

This thread will get locked in no time...
But... Most of the ROMs all offer the same 'new' features. 2.04/2.03 base, Rhodium enhancements (menu, notification panel etc) and then a slew of cooked in apps.
It really all comes down to what apps you want cooked in or not... Cloudyfa's is a good one, most of the required apps and lots of storage space.
There is no seriously defining factor in ROM selection now-days they are all fairly similar.
flash a few different ROMs, then u can decide by yourself.
dickenz is right, it all comes down to what your own preference.
Thanks all

htc hd2 touchflo on at&t tilt2

I am a little new to XDA...but I cant really find a straight answer to a question I have.
I just purchased the tilt2...love it. Unfortunately, I watched videos on the new hd2, and while I don't want the phone....gotta have my keyboard....I think a couple of the touchflo tabs make MUCH more sense.
So basically, I am wondering if cooks on here feel that at some point they will be able to offer some of those features in .cab files?
I dont want a whole new rom, I tried that on my original tilt...and it just never worked perfect, gps problems, some menus didnt look right. I really just want the phone to work perfectly like at&t intended...but with the new contacts tab, email tab, and maybe the new home screen that allows weather backgrounds and I believe allows a couple contacts straight on it.
Anyway...based on how people have been able to pull apart software for these phones...does this sound possible? or is touchflo simply too complicated to only pull parts of it out? I wouldnt want to simply entirely replace my at&t tilt 2 touchflo version with the hd2 version because I have heard that you would lose landscape mode for touchflo?
Anyway...just wondering if I can hope for this...or if I simply need to accept what I have until the touch pro 3 comes out?
p.s. I am assuming I would need that new version for what I wanted..unless hacks are possible? Basically I love the new email tab that allows you to read your emails right from there instead of showing them in an envelope.
I like the new contacts tab much better....more functional than that rotating carousel thing.
New today screen is nice with the weather background...and I like the idea of contacts on that screen.
No, you aren't going be able to change your TF3D with a simple .cab file.
It would require the flashing of a new ROM.
the HD2 'Sense' interface is Manila 2.5 and is in many ROMs over at the development section. Since Manila 2.5 is only designed for the HD2, when using the interface there is no landscape support for when the keyboard is slid out.
No one in xda-deveolopers has shown the ability to be able to take some features from Manila 2.1 and mix them with 2.5. If they could, I'm sure HTC would hire them in a heartbeat. HTC has an entire team of paid workers that create the Manilas. It takes time and skill and LOTS of work.
I would recommend just flashing a good Manila 2.1 ROM. Get rid of your AT&T bloatware. NGRZ's Photon ROM (in my signature) is a good place to start. It is very fast, stable, and comes preloaded with a ton of useful apps.
You will have less problems with his ROM than AT&T's stock ROM.

Thank you for the response...I figured that was the case.
So let me ask you...I am very nervous about flashing the ROM on my brand new expensive phone. My main concerns:
1. Is their an easy way to go back to the stock setup?
2. When i flashed my first tilt, I had radio problems that never really got fixed
3. What advantage does that ROM have over the stock...other than space? I find the stock ROM has pretty decent speed honestly
4. My main concern: I don't like losing any of the functionality of the stock ROM...I actually like the default ATT opera page, etc.
5. If I could find a ROM that would simply remove things like the ATT mall, but otherwise leave everything else stock..and work just as good as stock...gps, opera, keyboard mapping, etc. I would do it. Oh...I wouldnt mind having custom wallpaper on all tabs.

Here's some feedback:
1. Right now, no -- since the Tilt2 has just been released, many folks are waiting for someone to successfully dump the stock ROM in case we need to go back.
2. Many of the custom ROMs do not include a new radio -- you'll just have to read up and decide which ones you like.
3. Every custom ROM has a different advantage. In some cases its visual, in other cases speed, stability, and some are just highly experimental with features taken from other phones.
4/5. Again since the Tilt2 is so new, give it a little time. Usually there are some chefs who feel the same way you do and will use a stock ROM and just make minor tweaks like taking out some unnecessary bloat and adding some useful programs.
I would recommend if the stock ROM is working ok for you, to stick with it for the time being until some more ATT specific ROMs start getting developed and you find one that will suit your individual needs.

4/5. Perfect, thats a great answer for me. I think that's what I really want is a stock ROM with some tweaks for speed and bloat.
A. Does a stock tweaked ROM usually mean I dont need to worry about fiddling with radios? and the GPS and stuff works just like stock?
B. Any specific ROM chefs that you know of that I should follow that typically do these types of ROMs?
oh..this is unrelated, but does anyone know why I am having issues running software that seems to work fine on other touch pro 2's...I keep getting errors about .net versions being wrong. I tried installing the .net compact package from Microsoft..but it just says it fails during install. This is kind of a pain because I can't get some really common apps to install.

Questions - rooting & ROMs...

I've finally got to the stage where I am completely hacked off at having to keep uninstalling apps due to running out of space in the internal memory.
I'm hoping to do it all in one hit, and what I want is recommendation for a decent, stable ROM - I don't want to have to chop and change, reflashing ROM after ROM.
I used to do this with my old Dream, and it was fun when I had the time, but things have changed for me now and I need a reliable phone.
What I need: Apps2SD, stability
Nice to have but not essential: Better battery life (underclocked kernel?)
Dream stuff, but not at the expense of first two: Speed increase, Froyo goodies
I don't care about SenseUI one bit - in fact I've pretty much removed/replaced nearly every trace of it on my phone, by using Launcher Pro and non-Sense apps/widgets.
However, I'd like to know if it's possible to keep the text selection function contained within the standard browser on my phone? It also works the same in DolphinHD, which leads me to believe it's integrated into the Sense framework? I don't know if I can get that with Froyo though.
If I do go for a Froyo ROM, I'd like to know what won't work. I gather video recording is broken - don't care about that. Is there anything else that don't work?
Any advice or recommendations, pretty please!
If you go to the roms dev section and look at all the roms chefs have cooked you will figure out which ones you prefer and which ones you may like. The chef will either tell you what doesnt work and later if you read the comments members will provide additional feedback.
There is no 'best' rom each one has + and -

[Q] Which ROM offers the following?

I've searched, trawled and read through so many threads and cannot make my mind up which way to turn (I'm so indecisive). There is so much choice (which is a good thing in some ways and not so good in others) but it's confused the hell out of me. I could flash various ROM's and kernels all the while having to restore my data each time and run it for a while to see if it is suitable for my needs. This seems to the moderators general consensus for those asking what the 'best ROM' is (Understandable). But this (having to flash ROM's and kernels each time) is tedious and there is always some element of risk that you could end up with a bad flash the more you do this.
So here I am asking. Please note I am *NOT* asking which the best overall ROM is. I understand perfectly well that there is no best ROM and each ROM has different functionality and features that are suited to different peoples needs. I am asking which ROM suits *MY* needs. If moderators decide that I am asking what is the best ROM then I guess I will have to try harder to argue my case.
I don't mind if it's GB, ICS or JB - obviously I would *LOVE* to have a JB ROM but it's still in its infancy and has certain issues simply because there is and never will be an official JB ROM for my phone (Thanks Sony!).
My current setup is a 2011 Arc S currently running JJ Hybrid 3.1 (still) and ArcKnight kernel (forget which build).
I am not overly interested in fancy GUI's, themes, extra functionality or overclocking, although it would nice to have them 'just so long as they don't impact on performance and stability'.
Things I want.
#Rooted with CWM is a given obviously
#As lag free as possible (It takes several seconds to launch Contacts at present and laggy key presses in the phone dialer annoy)
#Good battery performance
#Increased memory
#Bloatware removed
#Removal of or fixed/tweaked default apps (For some reason the default browser sucks CPU/battery dry and I have disabled it on current ROM).
#Smooth 720p video (is this even possible either in the FW or through a mod?)
#Good camera performance (Use a mod?)
#Status bar with quick toggles and notifications
#Good WIFI, 2G,3G/HSDPA performance (especially if 3G is tweaked as I get poor signal in some places)
#Bravia engine (1 or 2?)
#Correctly functioning hardware including LED's/Side LED/Buttons/Sensors (brightness, rotation etc)
#STABILITY (as little bugs as possible basically)
#Easy upgrade path between builds (not having to wipe data each time although I realize this is sometimes required)
#WIFI tethering
I don't care much for HDMI output but if it works it's a bonus. Things like USB OTG and USB mass storage would also be useful but not essential.
I think that's all of it. If moderators still feel this is a 'best ROM' thread feel free to contact me privately to cast your warnings. Hopefully though they will see this is a bit more specific than that and actually asks more pertinent questions rather than a blanket 'which ROM is best' question.
Thanks for reading

Hi.
While this may not be a best ROM thread as you say, its just as equally annoying. You've listed what most of us want from a ROM, and as you say you've read this that and the other then its time to pick one and flash it. If you think the process of flashing custom ROMs is tedious then learn how to mod, tweak a stock ROM to your own liking then you won't need to rely on others to tell you what to flash.

We can't say, what fits you, we don't know your life. You know it the best, you should find the perfect one.
XDA is not a place, where people are slaves, stop being lazy and do something yourself aswell.
Look at ROM's overviews, features, functions, read comments (if you want to know more about the ROM) etc.
Try them, put them to the test in regular usage. Then you find one. We can't say, which one is good for you.
yeah he is right!

I'm on ICS because of the mobile data manager (built in, doesn't work on gb) as i have a limited data plan.
I'm right now on the xperia t rom, it is really great, the battery lasts up to two days. (3-4 hours display on, around 10h mobile data and wifi is always on).

Whilst I understand the sentiment of 'try them for yourself' and 'you are just being lazy' and 'read the comments' etc. It takes *TIME* I don't need overclocking. I don't need all the fancy themes. I don't need a ton of tweaks other than those that meet the basic requirements I have listed.
As I said whilst there is a healthy development community on this particular device, it is hard work to find the right ROM. I have to go through the list of ROMS, kernels and mods in the thread stickied in 'General' (I noticed at least one ROM is missing from that list btw). On the whole it does not tell me a lot other than name, ROM, base (GB, ICS, JB) and then you have to spend a lot of time trying to find out all the info about the ROM by going to the ROM's thread, read about it's features, how to install it, which kernels work best with it, how to fix, patch or workaround any problems found (usually buried deeper into the thread with sometimes 'hundreds' of replies so you might not know about the patches and workarounds until you actually install it and when you ask in the thread someone says it was mentioned earlier in the thread which you now have to search through) etc etc ad nauseam.
I'm just looking for a shortlist of ROM's to try based on others opinions that meet my criteria.
I do also believe that there should be a sticky that instead of ostracizing members for asking 'which is the best ROM' as there currently is (which I know can be annoying for the moderators) instead should offer opinions and experiences. Which ROM's offer which features and how well they perform and yes, perhaps even a poll.
This would be the 'go to' thread for all those people (including myself) who are stuck for choice.
But perhaps this is too much work (I guess you could say to me I should do it then and keep it updated since I am so interested in it)...
The forum is chaotic as it is. But this is the nature of forums.

Unfortunately, that's what most people would have to go through to actually find a rom that they would stick with. Luckily I tried 1 and never moved away because it was suffice. Here's a list to shorten the task, tremendously for you
Ultimate HD
Beautiful ICS
Jelly Sandwich - I've been using this one for months without changing. I'd recommend version 7.4 as it's stable and anything version 8 and above are a hassle to install and have ugly icons =/
Atomic GB - The only gingerbread based rom listed as opposed to ics so bear in mind the cybershot wouldn't work
I can't really comment on any of these roms' 'personal sufficiency' other than jelly sandwich, but these are the ones I would test if I were you good luck
well XDA is a dev site where devs share their creations for each other, they're not obliged to put them up here and frankly it takes a billion times more work to make a rom than to look through the ROM threads

Xperia T ROM is the way to go!
I too was in the same state 3-4 months back and all I wanted was a stable & smooth ROM (better than stock, of course). So, I went thro most of the threads and based on the feedback of many, I narrowed down on Ultimate HD. Sure its a better ROM and I was happy using it for close to 2 months. But after prolonged usage, it started to lag. Only then, I started experimenting with multiple ROMs.
There are ROM u would start hating it immediately after installing it and there are which will make u to stick with it for a while. After testing bunch of ROMs, I finally landed on Xperia T ROM. Its not the most talked about ROM around, but definitely has its own fan following and Im definitely going to be one among them. It has all the MODs that I wanted (toggles, latest apps, cybershot, small apps etc...) and yet it offered smoothness and free RAM of close to 100 MB. Most importantly, it offered loads of options while installing (in Aroma Installer). So, you can pick and choose whatever u want. It is one of the few ROMs wherein Sound Enhancements in Walkman player and Online mode in Album works out of the box without any tweaking!
So, I suggest you to give it a shot. Im sure u wont regret it
Hmm. Just read that T ROM has broken wifi tethering. Also read that AOSP ROM's don't have in call mute? It's quite a bit involved installing that ROM by the look of things too. I will monitor the thread for a while though and ask about the in call mute feature.
Sometimes, it's not about the ROM, it's the mods you flash on the ROM. I have been using stock ROM for quite some time and I have flashed a few mods to tweak and improve the stock ROM. You can go to the Themes and Apps section to find these kind of mods.
