So I just switched from my old but faithful Razr2 to a Samsung moment, and this is my first time owning an Andoid device.
The platform is definitely very entertaining with all of its apps... but in the end that's all it really has, APPS (same with the iphone).
The reality is that WP7 brings a whole new layer to the smartphone category, and that is Microsoft office. Why shouldn't I be able to do my work off the couch? All I can do with my Moment is have fun and maybe exchange some e-mails,but it does not have any business functionality which is what will make WP7 special. Once Microsoft is able to develop its APP store, it will have the best of both worlds, Business and Entertainment, which is somethinmg neither Apple or Google has at the moment.

It must also be mentioned that MS platforms have always gotten done games right. This thing is already shaping up to give the PSP a run for it's money.
You're not using the right apps then. Or you're in a strange line of work.

Give me a break ! I've been a windows mobile user over 10 years and all I got was breaking my nerves and endless waits for basic functionability !!! I can do miracles blazing fast with android and I am never going back to windows platform again. I guess u didn't 'play' with Android enough.
My office is always in my pocket and syncs with my Linux laptop and windows desktop over the air perfectly and on an instant. And guess what ? I never need to reboot my android phone! Neither I wait 5 secs for the phone panel to come up whenever I want to dial. I had so many windows mobile devices (first was Jornada 720 in 1997 and last was HTC touch pro). All were crawling and I could do far less from what I can do with my Android phone.

Run Zune software on a corporate PC to sync your phone. I don't think so.
You're describing WM6.5, and hopefully WP8, but not WP7.

i dont want to bash windows i really dont because i used them for awhile; however, windows 6.5 and previous version didnt work well. i restarted countless times with my TP2. it became such a hassle that after awhile i try to use the lightest custom roms just to do texting and calls and still i freeze and restart. seeing that things may be different with WP7 but i spent enough money on something for many years that didnt do a great job on there OS, shot, i think the Symbian OS did a better job. there are other OS sellers that are bringing great innovation, customibility, and stability, these are the things that i believe average users want; consequently, im going back to android (G2 when it comes) because it gave me these 3 things and more. just my opinion but WP7 may not be all what its cracked out to be.
Idocuments to go, and open office do the exact same thing as office mobile.

Well a lot of companies have allowed iTunes so that people can use iPhones so they will work out a way to use the Zune software.
Why would you need the Zune software? You can use exchange to sync and then sharepoint to share documents.

I work with Powerpoint all the time, never seen a beast like that. I'd say you are doing something wrong.
That I'm limited to email and Sharepoint to get files on my phone though is a bummer.
Right now, you wouldn't really need the Zune client on your work PC as the only syncing that Zune does is media. If you do somehow have a 4GB ppt file (I dunno if WP7 would even support opening it) you'd be best off hopping on WiFi and grabbing it from sharepoint or something. I would really question any scenario where a 4GB ppt file would exist and even then, why you would need it on your phone.

Really hoping they have Office Web Apps/SkyDrive.
Doing something wrong? Embedding and linking files is wrong?
I and a lot of other people actually use all the features of Powerpoint. Including but not limited to adding our own videos, adding an entire website, music files, intro's, etc,etc...all laid out perfectly on slides that make a point.
WM open these files with ease, a lot files just didn't play in the pp on the mobile version though.

That would be great but that scenario isn't supported. There is a workaround though - you can download files from web in IE as far as I know, and thus can have a web server set up on your PC that will let you transfer files directly, or upload them to Skydrive and then download "manually" from there. But that would be a pain for 4GB files anyway.

I don't like not having the USB storage functionality either. One of the things that irks me about the direction of wp7. Unlike multitasking and c&p, I don't think this one is coming unless there's alot of fuss about it (which I doubt is going to happen from the general consumer).
But it does seem very odd to have a 4gb presentation. You're supposed to be using the slides as a visual guide not some kind of data storage. Why would you embed the video into the presentation rather than just being a link? And why would you need to transfer some big video to the phone if you're just working on the ppt?
For remote control presentation. Plus I don't have to look at the presentation screen.
Click to play or play at entrance is much better than a simple link. It follows suit with the entire presentation. This is just my opinion though.

Using Windows 6.5 (and previous versions...) as evidence of how "terrible" WP7 is going to be is not really a logical way of thinking... Of course the new OS is going to have some similarities to the old versions but the smoothness with which the WP7 OS runs can't be compared to Windows mobile 6.5. Also, to awechris, I really don't see how syncing your cellphone to your Linux laptop makes it a "great" business phone. Do you know about some obscure android office package that I don't know about? Because to me a business phone in the modern world without access to some sort of Word, Powerpoint, and Excel application, is not a businessphone at all. I want to be able to write a report while sitting on the beach (with a physical keyboard), and that is something that WP7 will be able to offer me in the near future.

1st off this is not intended to be a flaming / bashing thread. If you want to do that please go elsewhere; I'm sure the vibrant forums will welcome you. If a MOD feels this belongs somewhere else, please move it.
I have been a long time WM user and recently switched to android for the past year. I am offering my take on WP7 on the pros on cons.
Interface - Finally something completely new and wonderful. Microsoft really did hit a homerun on trying to make information at a glance approach. Mail and search apps look beautiful. I thing missing, being able to quickly jump to apps in the app menu.
Lack of Landscape Support- For as great as the UI is I am shocked at the lack of landscape support. The start menu, app menu, nor Zune have lanscape support. You can not even refresh a webpage or type in a website if you are in landscape mode. Calling this anything other than an epic "FAIL" by microsoft is sugar coating it. Especially when the HD7 and Surround beg to be in landscape mode with their kick stands.
Browser - As expected from an IE browser it is pretty good. I already mentioned the lack of landscape support which is really frustrating but there is something else that gets under my skin more. Web pages do not resize to fit the screen when you zoom in. This was/is almost a deal breaking for me honestly. I love the organization of having all the buttons at the bottom and the interface is stunning but you lose way to many options in landscape mode. You can't even access favorites without first going back to portrait. MS, this NEEDS to be addressed soon. The browser is the main feature of smartphones now.
Zune - Wonderful if you have a Zune Pass. Honestly it was one of the main reasons why I bought this phone. I expected it to be awesome and it didn't disappoint. That being said they need to add a Play Now option to the market songs. When I'm browsing the market sometimes I want to queue songs and the Add to Playlist option makes sense but how could you leave out Play now? Seriously?
Another thing I don't like is I can not fast forward to a certain spot in a movie. Video files can be hours long, why should I have to hold the fast forward button to get to the point I'd like. Let me hit the progress bar and then use the rewind / fast forward buttons for getting to the exact point.
USB Storage Device- glaring admission, but I can kind of see why. It helps stop piracy, but I loved being able to hook my fuze / tilt 2 / nexus 1 / vibrant to my car stereo and play the music I had downloaded on my phone. I know I could get an audio cable and do the same, but while driving it is so much easier to use the radio head unit to control music rather than your phone. I knew this when getting in bed with WP7, but that doesnt mean I still can't miss it.
Bluetooth- for music works just like it should. however it will not play the audio from video files threw bluetooth. It keeps coming out of my phone's main speakers and there is no way to get into the bluetooth profiles to see if something is wrong. VERY ANNOYING MS. get to fixing it.
People- Wonderful. Could anyone ask anymore? I gave it my facebook and gmail accounts and I didn't have to worry about any contacts not showing up. Love the Facebook updates also.
Dailer- No smart dialer? This used to even be in my old wizard by default. How it get left out is completely beyond me.
Announced fixes- Flash, Copy & Paste, Turn by Turn navigation can't come soon enough but I am glad microsoft acknowledged they needed them.
Local Outlook Support- I knew this before hand, but I am in the crowd that says MS needs to add this ability.
Overall- I bought my HD7 without a contract and I am pretty sure i will NOT be returning it. I love my HD7 and WP7, however this OS isn't entirely complete. That being said was iOS and Android complete when they came out? To even suggest that is laughable. I can not wait for microsoft to release all the fixes for this OS because when it does it will be a powerhouse.
I will not buy that this phone is for dumbsmart phone users. I probably done more with my phones than 95% of android users who will do nothing by bash WP7 and i honestly see this for ALL users. It helps bring the powerhouse experience in an easier way without being tied down as much as iOS.
Why not just post in one of the other 50 threads? Now people will be copy-pasting replies from those into this one.
I did notice the lack of landscape mode in IE. I think that was the only thing that made me go WTF when I used the HD7.
However, the keyboard is so good that I don't think it even mattered that much.
I guess with a 3.7-8" screen it can be a bit annoying, but on anything 4" or bigger it didn't strike me as a big deal beyond the initial shock of it not being there.
Also, lots of people dont' seem to know the difference between an Operating System and an Application.

Also a core application can be considered part of the OS. If you can not uninstall it, it is part of the OS.
I thought it was annoying not being able to get to the address bar with all that screen space.
I don't know about you guys but my Surround goes into landscape mode IE just fine...
The only thing I don't like is lack of landscape in marketplace and Zune...
also if you want a nice photo editor, Thumba photo editor for $.099 is awesome!
EDIT: Oh i see. I can't believe I have to switch to portrait to type a URL!! WTF microsoft!

Overall I agree with just about everything you said. Regarding the browser, I've noticed that certain areas of webpages are zoomed in more than others. For instance, on xda, the text of people's posts is HUGE compared to the buttons such as User CP, etc. at the top of the page. What I've found is a double tap in my area of interest on a page will zoom the page so that ONLY my area of interest is approriately sized. Then, when I want to switch to another part of the page, I double tap there and the page will resize, and so on. The text does not dynamically reflow a la Android, but I think it's a pretty usable system.

By going to the dailer and being able to spell "MOM" for example on the keys and it would automatically come up with the number for that contact.

By the Logic people can say "Android is buggy because the GMail client is buggy." or "Windows Mobile is buggy because the Opera Browser HTC bundled with the HD2 is buggy." or "Linux is full of bugs because the KDE in that distro is buggy as hell."
Every OS comes with a set of stock applications, but they are just that, and are usually updatable independent of installing a new kernel or driver stack on the device.
In any case, I've already said I agree that the lack of landscape mode is an issue.
I just wanted to make that distinction, because lots of people on this forum are incapable of doing it themselves.

I still completely disagree with you. Froyo for Android made plenty of browser updates so would you say that wasn't a OS update?
I like most people consider stock apps part of the OS

then you are going to have to disagree with almost all people. This isn't a techy vs jock debate. These are apps which are built into the os and therefore part of the os.
But anyway this thread is meant for objective evaluation of WP7. If you want to continue this debate we should continue it somewhere else.

You can use search in the people hub for something very similar. Admittedly not an exact substitute but it works well enough for me.

How does this increase piracy? If the files you buy on Zune are locked down they can still do this even if there is a common store of files accessible as usb mass storage. Either by drm or by using isolated storage for those files.

If you do it this way, then you are working with two sets of data (email, calendar, tasks, contacts, etc.) neither of which is guaranteed to be up to date. I don't see why people think this is preferable to a server-based system.

Hopefully this will be true; I will keep my fingers crossed. Currently, as I see it, they are targeting people who don't understand what files are, and would be confused by files, and who believe that music consists of songs arranged by artists into albums. I.e. the dumb mass market.

The cintent u purchase in zune have no drm..... The piracy statement is legit.

though given you just purchased for your zune account, you can then access it on zune desktop, and burn discs from there. so no necessarily correct.
however, what i think of a common storage area is a good idea. just have it so that the pictures, videos, music, documents are in a folder view for when you plug the phone into your PC. it would really only require a bit of mapping within the OS to make it look like a storage unit. Even if it was just more restricted down to just the documents section, that's still something. better than nothing imo as i don't have access to skydrive at work. but aye, i can live with it, it's not going to make me want to return the phone.

Its 2001, people pirate with digital media. Cd piracy may still be hip in the third world, but I haven't operated a cd player in years (or used my computer to play one), much less bought or burned one.

how about an MP3 cd? to play in your car? to lend to a friend? or your USB stick? as soon as it's available on zune desktop you have a copy of it... there is plenty ways around it. i'm not saying you should do it, i'm saying the possibilities are there.

If the files are not DRMed, and Microsoft wants to protect them, either it can DRM the files, or it can keep them in isolated storage. The existence of common storage doesn't exclude isolated storage.
Dear Steve Ballmer & Microsoft,
Before I begin my rant, please allow me to say that I have used many many many PDA phones. And WP7 has without a doubt, some of the most GLARING problems I have ever seen in a mobile OS.
My phone history (in no [particular order]:
-T-mobile Pocket PC (the 1st one)
- SE P800, P900, P910I
- Xperia X1
- Many different WM 5.0, 6.0 6.5 phones (maybe 10 or more). If I were to list them all this would take all day. My most recent WM phone before this HD7 was the HTC TyTN II.
- Nokia N93i, N95, N900 (still got it)
- Nokia Communicators 9210 and E90
- Iphone 1st Gen
- Kyocera Palm OS phone
- Probably other stuff I forgot about along the way.
(Btw, all of these phones had address books which worked great)
I am in no way saying that I am some PDA expert, but I think its safe to say I've used alot of PDAs.
Good afternoon. I really hope somebody from Microsoft or Steve himself or some MS dev is reading this.
I recently bought a HTC HD7 and after using it for 1hr my initial impressions were very good....THEN i used it a bit longer and I started to realize something.
Cons:
1. The contact list function is really really bad. You guys replaced the standard address book function with the Facebook contact list. It is horribly bad. It is so bad that it leads me to believe that NONE OF YOU have actually used facebook in your life. If any of you developers were actually familiar with Facebook, you would have realized that most consumers definitely do not want 80% of their Facebook contacts cluttering/polluting their cell phones address book. Also, why am I not able to browse through my Facebook contacts photos? Am I missing something? Why cant I simply just tap the portrait of my facebook friend and look at his profile pictures?
2. The WP7's media playerss seek function needs to work like a STANDARD portable TOUCH SCREEN media player. Why am I not able skip to the part of the video I want to watch by simply sliding my finger along the time bar until I reach my target moment? Why am I forced to press a seek button instead? I thought this was a touch screen phone, not to mention the fact that Pocket PC, Pocket PC 2003, WM 5.0 WM 6.0 WM 6.5 all included this missing function. Do you guys even watch movies on your cell phones? Or are you guys still using Nokia 5200s?
3. Xbox Live is buggy as hell. I download a game through Xbox Live and it says I need to connect my phone to my computer or connect to wifi (It was already both) in order to complete the install. There is no easy way to check the progress of the installation of download unless I try to download another application. Is the ability to check the progress without downloading another app hidden somewhere? If so, why is it hidden?
4. When I try to visit a previous webpage and I press the hardware backwards arrow botton, it kicks me out of IE.
5. The hardware buttons have great sensitivity, but I am constantly pressing them by accident (with my palm), thus closing my active program unintentionally.
And let me tell you, I do not have large hands.
6. I dunno why it doesnt work as a USB drive natively. Perhaps this is some sort of piracy control measure or you are trying to mimic apple.

If you guys were unaware of the problems I mentioned, well now you know. I always liked the N95 symbian address book that allowed me to create groups for my contacts and I liked all WM previous phone dialers which would cross reference all incoming and outgoing calls with the numbers I was pressing.
Microsoft should atleast make a dialer thats as good as their previous ones, and maybe learn a thing or 2 from Symbian.
Edit: I just read that it was possible to cut down the number of contacts from facebook that appear in your phone, but it still should not be this difficult. I should be able to simple long press the contact and select delete or hide.

One thing I'd like to agree with the OP about is the Capacitive buttons. They're a good idea in theory (the Vibrant has them as well), but they're practically terrible. They are very prone to hitting by accident.
Lots of OSes can learn from Symbian, but being the Jack of All Trades has not worked for any OS to date. Windows Mobile also supported a ton of stuff and it's marketshare in the US suffered a lot. Symbian has great marketshare overseas because the OS is used in low-end feature phones as well. They aren't strong in the mid-high end smartphone market.
And they would be, if they didn't put such small NANDs in the phones, skimp on the RAM in the phones (it uses a Virtual memory architechture, but the phones still need at least 348 MB RAM, IMO), and have such an embarassing user interface. I really like that it has the most flexible development environment of any smartphone OS, though (similar to [again] Windows Mobile on that front).

I recently bought a HTC HD7 and after using it for 1hr my initial impressions were very good....THEN i used it a bit longer and I started to realize something.
Cons:
1. The contact list function is really really bad. You guys replaced the standard address book function with the Facebook contact list. It is horribly bad. It is so bad that it leads me to believe that NONE OF YOU have actually used facebook in your life. If any of you developers were actually familiar with Facebook, you would have realized that most consumers definitely do not want 80% of their Facebook contacts cluttering/polluting their cell phones address book. Also, why am I not able to browse through my Facebook contacts photos? Am I missing something? Why cant I simply just tap the portrait of my facebook friend and look at his profile pictures?
2. The WP7's media playerss seek function needs to work like a STANDARD portable TOUCH SCREEN media player. Why am I not able skip to the part of the video I want to watch by simply sliding my finger along the time bar until I reach my target moment? Why am I forced to press a seek button instead? I thought this was a touch screen phone, not to mention the fact that Pocket PC, Pocket PC 2003, WM 5.0 WM 6.0 WM 6.5 all included this missing function. Do you guys even watch movies on your cell phones? Or are you guys still using Nokia 5200s?
3. Xbox Live is buggy as hell. I download a game through Xbox Live and it says I need to connect my phone to my computer or connect to wifi (It was already both) in order to complete the install. There is no easy way to check the progress of the installation of download unless I try to download another application. Is the ability to check the progress without downloading another app hidden somewhere? If so, why is it hidden?
4. When I try to visit a previous webpage and I press the hardware backwards arrow botton, it kicks me out of IE.
5. The hardware buttons have great sensitivity, but I am constantly pressing them by accident (with my palm), thus closing my active program unintentionally.
And let me tell you, I do not have large hands.
6. I dunno why it doesnt work as a USB drive natively. Perhaps this is some sort of piracy control measure or you are trying to mimic apple.

1. There's a separate Facebook app in the marketplace. If you don't want to integrate everyone, get it.
2. Agree on this point.
3. Never happened to me. If you want to see the progress stay on that page. A little bar begins to fill up. So I don't know what you're talking about.

5. Sorry, but that's user error.
6. There's already a workaround. You can use it as a mass storage device.
7. Its coming in the update. Why is that so hard to get?

The problem isn't DivX as far as I understand, it's avi. Divx is just an implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile, which is supported. And the strange part here is that avi is Microsoft's own proprietary format, while mp4 is Apple's. Strange times.
Scrubbing is needed not only for long videos, I use it all the time for YouTube and music (especially podcasts, many of which aren't properly separated into chapters).

So what's your problem?
"Coming in the update" means nothing. It may be month or 5 months.
Nobody buys a device to wait for update, well, maybe only tech geeks, but that's not the phone for them.

He's genuinely disappointed with his purchase and has every right to complain about it. If you WP7 sympathisers were honest with yourselves, you would recognise that there are currently plenty of problems with this platform, and disaffected users have every right to complain.
There's no point pretending the problems don't exist.. it's obvious they, perhaps you only ever read Microsoft blogs and listen to Channel 9. If you want a true indication about how many users are feeling, just read the Microsoft questions and answers forum.

This is still a new OS, it's been out for ONE month, many of these things gonna be replaced or added with updates. Just wait and see. The most important thing now is that's a fast and simple OS. Just remember what ****ty phone iPhone was, look what it became now... Time does miracles!

Unfortunately I have the feeling that most people here now refuse to see the obvious problems with this platform (no USB, no DivX, and so many others...)
Seems like there is no right to judge and criticize the OS.
We shall not become like the iPhone fanboys. Seriously.
I also think that WP7 is a truly disappointing experience as I don't like to be forced to use all these external MS services (Zune, Skydrive, Marketplace, etc...) that just make me waste my time.
And I expect nothing from the so-called January update.

Few years ago, there were hundreds of different OS for mobile phones, everyone with its pros and cons.
But with these phones, we only could send/recieve calls and sms, take photos and crappy videos and store some music.
every phone had its own file extensions and file compatibilities, only java was able to unify some programms.
The browser were also unusable, despite the small screens, and high costs of internet, there was no compatibility with activex and some frameworks.
I can remember, I had a Samsung sghP910 with 320x240 screen and Nvidia chipset, enough to do many things, but completely disabled by the bad Samsung OS.
Later there was the unification of mobile phones with PDA with Windows Mobile.
I think this was the biggest step in history for mobile phones.
I bought the HTC Touch 3G WM6.1, and I could virtually do anything I could do on my computer. Download programs, remotely connect with my office PC, and surf the internet without any compatibility issues.
for any problem or need, ther was a program on the internet to download!
The only big issue, was the small resolution display 320x240, that complicated my life a little bit.
Now i was searching for something newer, that could totally replace my netbook, I was thinking about some HTC with this brand new WP7 but today I tried out the new HTC trophy of my girlfriend, and was really disappointed!!!!
I mean, very high resolution that could finally activate some remote desktop function, fast processor and relative lightweight.
I saw that junk OS of Iphone, made for rich and useless people, the nokia junk Symbian that I'm actually using for work, and that new IPhone-like Android, that is here today, but maybe not tomorrow.
Blackberry is another useless junk, my sister got it.
I'm searching for some desktop remplacement handheld, but the new WP7 is back to this kind of Multimedia useless stuff, no SD support for upgrade, and this whole windows, that only makes you take more time to find the right application (like the start in WM6.5)
I saw that instead to make a step forward, Microsoft mad a big big step backward!!!!
I'm asking myself why, because handheld should be every-time more like Desktops, but like this, you're bound to stupid aplications, and you have to pay for it.
No file-manager, no desktop, no start button and no task manager, nothing!!

If you want all that, buy yourself a HD2 and run WM or Android. Has RDP, file-managers galore, task managers, useless SD support and those all important crashes and slow-downs all the time.
While I agree, the lack of RDP on WP7 is disheartening, judging from the number of quasi-remote-desktop apps available there is actually a real want for this. So I have no doubt it will become available sooner rather than later.
Yes it would be possble, go to your nearest provider and purchase a 6.5 enabled device.
A mobile OS should absolutely not evolve to look and act like a desktop OS. That's what windows mobile was. And it was awful. A mobile OS should be really what wp7 and iOS is; quick, easy to use, and accelerate what you're doing, not hinder it.

Yeah see this is exactly the reason I switched to wp7. I was so sick of tweaking and managing. and tweaking. The endless tweaking and managing. My mobile device should not give me a headache whenever I use it and watch it lumber through its operations. Wp7 has no task manger to keep an eye on, no tweaks needed, no file manager to navigate (what do you need one for... seriously), and it's awesome. Seemless and quick. And what's the purpose of the start button? Why do you want one? What do you want it to navigate you to?
I'm really having a hard time understanding why so many people don't research what wp7 is before getting it. It is not windows mobile. Those days are gone. A mobile OS should be what iOS and wp7 is, quick and painless. Let me do whatever I want without having to worry about an app now running in the background or what my memory is at.
Why not just get an HD2 or similar that is designed to run "real" Windows Mobile and not buy an OS that obviously does not suit your needs?
I ave had several wm phones and was a fan, however, windows mobile as it was nearly finished off microsoft in the mobile Market, wp7 may save them
Right now there is nothing more to do for me than wait for an upgrade and see how MS will act. WP7 is a great foundation.
But yes, smartphones - opposed to dumphones - should replicate most of PC abilities.
They should not act like racing horse with 3 legs - and this is what WP7 is right now.
I am able to compromise my needs to wait now. I can't wait however for very long, year is too much, to get features instead of their basic forms like maps, word etc.
So for me, if MS will not make it soon and accelerate development, bring the features an make it capable, I am off to Android.
But now I wait, I want to see MS cards open.

I think you get me wrong. I mean, its very good that everything is getting "easier", more beautiful and so on, but normally they should add tools, without quitting the old good ones.
with my touch 3g, 6.1 i have to use the pen to go through the menus, its complicated, but i know where to find my applications, and configurations, like windows.
But the worst thing, i heard that's a whole new OS and no longer compatible with cab files.
that means, if i want some new programs, maybe i've got to pay for them, and the old ones are lost.
am I right???

Which? Well: marketplace support for all users, bing maps supporting all countries at least in Europe, PC Usb transfer of all documents, multitasking, video send by email, word at least on the level of docs to go featurewise, greater openeness for developers, and some other stuff.

To be honest the app distribution is not a problem for me right now.
From scratch = from the beginning. Not based on WM6.5.

hmmm maybe i'll wait until they'll put Intel Atom instead of Arm, and run normal Window 7, because even if I buy somenthing like HD2, it will be sooner or later discontinued damn
WP7 is super system, till you use it as M$ engineers thought you would be.
I mean there's plenty things missing. Many people will say, who needs tethering, for example. And those many will be satisfied with other advantages of WP7. But me, who need tethering all the time, I'm stuck. I'm really keen on WP7, it's speed, live sync, zune sync,... but who will tell me when tethering will be possible. I didn't even consider such phone systen doesn't have tethering.
Now I spent whole week hacking the HD7 phone with Chevron unlocker and DFRouter xap. As I'm reading the thread about tethering I must be lucky that I didn't mess it all up cause some can't connect to zune after that.
So, as sbdy said, if you use your phone for most phone obvious things, than WP7 is really great. But if you need a bit more, than you're stuck. So I'm probably selling my HD7 and waiting for Nokia MeeGo device. There I think I can expect more as computer device and a bunch of things WP7 doesn't have: tethering(USB and WiFi), FM transmitter, open platform, video calling. That is what I can think of what matters to me.

The xbox thing is coming. You can control some kinect games with WP7. The rest sound good. Not sure about 11. Sounds a bit too complex for a mobile OS

I wouldn't want my data in someone elses hands. better to fully backup the phone, wipe, let the friend use it, and restore later imho.
moving the phones restore image off to a computer is a good idea too.

18. A "Task Manager" so we can shut some **** stuffs off to save battery. (which i found really usefull in WM6.5) . Also have a option to shut down the application completely while using it
19. Bing support in Asia ( better be, but i am not going to stay at my hometown for a longtime, i will stay here, where Bing does support, LOL)
20. Better build-in Facebook (Not Facebook Apps), notifications, images, video, view post... all from People Hub ( i found the Facebook Apps is kind of annoying if you don't have 3G and have to use EGPRS...)
21. Hopefully, Microsoft will let HTC build their custom Windows Phone 7 version, or modifield deep down inside the "Cores" of Windows Phone 7, so we can get something like a HTC Sense for WP7, or HTC Sense Metro-UI Style.

23. Upgrade Security Level for WP7 if possible ( i thought about this when i read the thread of somebody here lost his HD7 and found out that he could not find his phone or lock it Through Live because everything based on the Simcard Inside)

25. Video Call ( i have seen the new HTC's Device that run WP7, has the 16MP Camera. It has the front camera, so hopefully we gonna get it)
26. Improve/Optimize Performance... I don't know why, maybe because of WP7, maybe because of the maker, but my WP7's Fruit Ninja is not as smooth as iPhone's or Android's Fruit Ninja.

And so what? From current WP7 politics it looks like WP7 is NOT a important product for microsoft, so why should the bother about few customers. They are always selling only promises, and people are buying them, not a real functionality in software.

Microsoft understand about the "Smartphone" Cake. People now are relying more and more on their smartphone. They don't have time to wait for the full battery of the laptop or they don't have the strength of the Olympic Athletic to carry it everyday and run around. ( except for Sony Vaio Bussiness Series, but compare to a smartphone, they are still damn more expensive)?
They know how to listen to their customer, biggest example i can tell is Windows 7 (PC OS). Now they are doing good with Windows Phone 7. Even Windows Phone 7 is a new OS, i still feel good with it. Because it deploy and provide everything i need in my daylife. There are few to some lacks of feature or bug, but you need to learn how to accept and live with it, since Windows Phone is new and mistake is not avoid-able.
Windows Phone are having a great chance in Smartphone Market, since iOS is boring and no change between version and version. Android is getting heavier and heavier... ( don't be mad, but i had changed my HD7 for my friend's Desire HD. Android is fun to play around with, but the only thing i found it usefull, not by Android itself, but because of the HTC Sense. After 2 days of using, i could not wait for my HD7 back).
NO matter what you say, i do believe in Microsoft in this Project, and i do belive that Windows Phone will not let iOS and Android walk that easy. The problem that Microsoft need to solve is their estimate time of product realeasing... they delayed No-Do and that made me felt like crap.

rubbish.... either u dont read news or just plain ignorrent... if WP7 is not an important product for MS why the hell they pay few billion to NOKIA to use WP7 on their hardware...
just wait and see what WP7 will do to the mobile industry....
to you functionality is scrwing up the mobile phone jsut like WM 6.5 and android did..... if you can tell me that WP7 do not work out of the box then i will believe you... dont tell me it cant work as wifi acces point, not a USB disk drive, or no bluetooth file transfer (those are all bull****....), i bought the phone sync my outlook contacts to windows live account and wala....
till today it did not hanged, freezed, and with the nodo update it even got better... mango will make it even better....
i am not here to say iOS or android is crap, but if u test iOS, Android and WP7 side by side.... as there are few videos of apple for apple test iOS v WP7.... iOS was 10 sec slower then WP7..... so just imeging what it will do to ANDROID...

I agree with you on all you said, I tried the Samsung galaxy s and it’s not as smooth as my HD7...
and for the first time MS have come out and said sorry for the delay in the NODO update release, JonB have apologized so many time to the users...
MIX11 interview video... can’t wait for the mango...
I am just waiting for NOKIA to start shipping the WP7 devices so I can have real good phone, and I believe HTC will have to do better than HD7 when nokia start to ship WP7..

Admin: Selecting few contacts and granting them admin previledges should allow them to control your mobile remotely and read/write gallery, contacts, sms, reset[everything]

you can set rules "do not disturb" from "9AM till 6PM" and "sat,sun" etc
Users: if your friend wants to borrow your phone for a week. dont panic. just create a user and insert his sim. he can use all the phone features except admin settings. all your data will be hidden
after return you can delete his user account or just switch over to yours.

Do you mean MS has started WP7 8 months ago, or it is 8 months on market? I can understand that this system is 8 months on market, so there is no good "navigation" software with offline maps, but microsoft has much more time to prepare its product. WM6.5 has been developed from original windows CE which was started aprox. 1997, so it tooks more then 10 years of "evolution" to get this OS functional and nice looking. Now WP7 is similar to Windows CE 2.0, it has "small version" of Word, Excel some applications made by hobbiest, and GUI which is so "creative" like Windows CE was in 1997. Only difference is faster and bigger hardware.

And if you compare WP7 phone to non-smartphone from 2005 it is fantastic. But today is 2011 and if you want to sell product you must compare it to competitors. WP7 was designed to be new trend in technology and showing future of this market and beeing revolutionary. Currently some non-smartphone phone has better functionality.

I think this example should be understood different way. Microsoft has developed Windows 95 from a scratch, people were disapointed because there were problems with compatibility, but got used to this OS. Then were windows XP which brought more new technology, there were many problems but people accepted this OS. Then was few years without new OS and had appeared Windows Vista. It was criticized for many problems, and avoided in many areas. Now we have nice, quite stable Windows 7 which based on Vista. IMHO WP7 is still in "Vista" stage, maybe Mango will fix this, but I believe 2-3 updates which will bring so many changes as Mango will make this system like windows 7.

Sure if microsoft were founded 3 years ago, this mistakes can be forgiven. Nodo is a small part of functionality that was promissed.

Nokia is a different story, this company had lost so many chances. They had good quality phones, own OS (Symbian), they wanted to develop QT and now they are on the verge of bankruptcy. Why MS gave them money? I do not know, probably MS want to earn more money.
