G2 on t-mobile rooting problem - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

Hi guys
I have tried every guide on xda website. such as
adb (permission: denied)
fastboot (acess: not allowed)
flashrec (could not flash )
and
goldcard (permission denied)
please help, I have spent lots of time checking all the driver are right and followed the instruction dozens of times.
must be a way out please help
thanks

try theunlockr.com and just search for how to root your HERO in one click. I have used that site to root my HTC Magic and my friends Magic, as well as my own HERO and my friends HERO. Very helpful.
(Im sorry to the admins if i am not allowed to post outside links)

What went wrong with the goldcard method? Thats a hardcore way of rooting so its strange for it not to work...

Double check your creation of the goldcard! I found the method at http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/18/how-to-downgrade-your-htc-hero-so-it-can-be-rooted/ worked perfectly for me. Though I did have some trouble with RUUs, try a couple and see which one works for you. I forget which one worked for me in the end.
Aleks

Yeh i gotta say, my G2 on T-Mob was abit of a pain, but i managed to root it using the gold card method, using the stock MSD that came with the phone, i didnt even have to use a MSD>USB i just mounted it using the phone.
What OS are you using, i managed to do it on wXP, though if you are using Vista+ then MAKE SURE that you are using Run As Administrator!!! Else it will fail!
Edit:
I forgot to mention, i dont know why but it took 3 times for the root to actually take, i dont know why, the first 2 times, i rooted the phone, isntalled the WWE HTC Rom, then flashed a new bootloader all fine, then installed a custom rom, i think MoDaCo first (i cant remember i have flashed too much over the past week) but for some reason the SU wouldnt work, though i dont think this is what solved it, it was probbly me being stupid, but i flashed my bootloader again, and it finnaly worked, personally i would recomend RA's Rec Image link saved my a** a few time
Also the Howto in the Wiki of this site is good Link

I tried 3 different micro sd cards before i managed to get the goldcard to work. The card than came with did not work for me so id suggest trying it again with a different sd card. The one that finally did work for mine was a 16Gb Kingston one.

Goldcard works a treat
Just make sure you do it in the right order.
Do the SD Card hack and then downgrade to the HTC hero rom linked in the Gold card thread once thats installed then you can use flashrec.
The HTC Hero ROM downgrade is the most important if thats not done flashrec will just keep failing.
So
1) SD Card hack
2) HTC Hero ROM downgrade using the RRU on the Gold Card thread.
3) Install Flashrec (goto the flashrec thread linked at the bottom of the gold card isntructions)
4) Install Recovery ROM
5) Copy the ROM you want to your SD card.
6) load into boot loader (Hold down home while turning on and hold it until bootload starts)
7) Do a WIPE
8) Load new ROM from SD card.

hi guys thanks for all the suggestions,
with goldcard, am able to run through the whole process but at the end I can not flash new Recommended ROM
any suggestions

I had the same problem on the T Mobile G2....
First off the MSD card i was using caused problems, but the stock one that comes with the phone works fine.
Then i ran into problems flashing the rom that the tutorials provide. So i downloaded a whole bunch and it was trial and error until i found one that worked. It's strange how some people find it works as per the tutorial, and others have to try different RUU roms...
Good luck!

Strange problem rerooting

Ok so I originally rooted using the Tiny live linux cd, everything went fine and I had fun testing out various roms, I decided I wanted to go back to the Tmobile branded rom and flashed by putting the extraced rom.zip on my sd card and renamed it to PB99IMG.zip (RUU_Bravo_TMO_UK_1.15.110.11_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_122755.exe) again everything went fine but this is where the problem begins...
when I try to reroot using the EXACT same method and the EXACT same Goldcard I get the error 42..custom ID check failure...what has this rom done to my phone???
I've searched for similar posts but this seens to be a first...has anyone who's reverted to one of the branded roms encoutered a problem like this?
sounds like it's Gold Card related. I would suggest that you re-create gold card and set the card up via your PC.
Yes Re-Create Goldcard and...... U cant "root" with a stock branded Rom And there is NO way to unroot a Tmobile Desire.. for now! So stay rootet ;-)
Use this ROM =)

I beg to differ on the unrooting bit, all you have to do is extract the rom.zip from the RUU and rename it PB99IMG.zip, boot the phone holding down the vol down button and the rom gets loaded and flashed that way

A unique USB brick

Someone I know has gotten their Desire USB bricked. Normally that's a non-issue but there's a few erm... complications.
Here's how it occurred, they have an O2 branded Desire but somehow they managed to get the Android 2.2 update (No one else with an O2 Desire got it btw). As you'd imagine it caused quite a few issues, it apparently got to 80% then restarted went to 33% and then restarted. Now it's USB bricked.
fastboot oem enableqxdm 0 has no effect meaning we can't SD card access
The current ROM has a Froyo version number and is very very unstable. It crashes after about 2 minutes and then reboots.
It's HBOOT 0.80 at the moment (Despite the OTA 2.2 update being HBOOT 0.92???) and using the HBOOT 0.80 rooting package I cannot get Step 1 to successfully execute. It gives error 41: remote id failure.
How to get back to older ROM after FROYO update messed everything up
Same issue here. I have an orange branded htc desire which I debranded, then updated to 2.2 Froyo without a goldcard and now have a bricked phone. No access to SD, Wifi, GSM, Force closes all the time, and reboots every couple of minutes in a loop.
Running update in recovery mode doesnt work, neither does running Stock RUU files on different versions with goldcard in phone.
Hboot is 0.80, 2.2 showing as installed. Unsure what to do next really, any suggestions would be great, there must be loads of people who have this issue now...

I had the same issue. Virgin UK phone. Used a zip version of the OTA Froyo and got stuck with it looping.
To fix it I created a new goldcard in my girlfriend's phone and used the same zip file on the goldcard to flash from the bootloader.
My phone has not been rooted.
Hope that helps and good luck.

I thought Goldcards could only be created in the phone you plan on using it in? I can still manage to create a goldcard using my phone, so maybe I have a different issue.
PS where did you get the OTA Froyo update?
Why u dont try?
http://www.unrevoked.com/#desire
This installs a custom Recovery but i think u need a Sdcard.
If yes call the devs for help if they could patch it that it runs with DataPartition or something else. If u have Hboot 0.80 Unrevoked works! 100%
Mines the same.....unfortunately I don't have access to another Desire, and none of the so called fixes work......I'm on Orange and this update has well and truly shafted my phone, now I have the most expensive brick in the house.....get in!
The problem you have is your sd card is not recognized so unrevoked doesnt work and neither does 'enabling' your sd card via adb devices....its all crap
I created my goldcard in an HTC Tattoo which worked like a charm. I used the sticky post at the very top of the development section for instructions. Once done I copied http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip to the SD card and renamed it to update.zip. make sure windows doesn't change it to update.zip.zip
I then installed it from the bootloader.
So all I really need to do is create a goldcard and it should work for him?
I'll tell him to give that a shot. It would be impossible to create a gold card with a proper CID though because as we all know ADB doesn't work with USB bricks.

I used this http://www.roothtchero.co.uk/goldcard-2
There's a tool to create a goldcard linked in the guide. Made it very easy. I'm really no expert but I think the cid isn't dependant on the phone, just the card. I couldn't get it to work in a card reader but was very straight forward when it was connected to the pc through my girlfriend's Tattoo. Didn't cause any problems with me using 64 bit windows 7 either.

[Q] Bricked HTC Desire after installing OTA 2.2 Update

Hi,
I'm new so please excuse any of my stupid questions.
I have an unbranded, unlocked HTC Desire, in Australia, apparently it was a t-mobile device. Being naive I didn't realize this could create issues with OTA updates - I know now though! I don't think it's rooted, but wouldn't know the difference. There are no telco logos etc.
My desire got stuck in a rebook loop when I installed the OTA update to android 2.2. It seems to me the update hasn't completed. I finally got restarted after removing the battery.
In about phone it says I have:
Android 2.2 installed
build 3.13.720.1 CL233262
Baseband version 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Kernel 2.6.29.0cb9f166
I have
HBOOT 0.82
RADIO 4.06.00.02_2 if that's relevant.
The phone won't recognize my sim card or SD card and gets an error when I try to turn on wifi. For added joy it frequently force closes.
I tried to do a factory reset but it never seemed to complete. Then I turned on with vol down + power and did clear storage. It removed my data but didn't otherwise help.
I gather from reading various forums that I need to go back to the 2.1 version?
Do I need a goldcard to do this? How do I make one?
How do I know which file to use?
Is there anything else a newbie needs to know so I don't make a bad situation worse?
Thanks!
I think you should first downgrade to 2.1.
Also you are going to need a Goldcard, but i don't
know if you can make it without the phone working properly.
Try to find and install branded RUU in order to make the phone work and then proceed with making the goldcard and debranding.
Thanks for the links!
I'll take a deep breath and have a go. Looks like I'll need to get a microSD adaptor first.
It's better to start by searching a branded RUU suitable for your phone. At this point your phone's SD slot is unusable so you won't be able to make the goldcard.
IMO sd adapter is not needed, you might use the phone as a card reader (assuming that you have installed the branded RUU).
So I don't need a goldcard to install the RUU?
No but it has to be 2.2 and branded. I think it is also safe to try to install previous versions if you are not able to find a 2.2 RUU. Don't forget to check tel company's site, here and here.
I'd recommend you root the phone (no goldcard required) and install a custom rom (mine will work). That will get the phone running normally again, then you can create a goldcard and run official unrooted software if you want.

SD card is required so you are going to need a card reader, as you can't use your phone at this moment. Or you can try unrevoked.
The r6 root method is obsolete now, and shouldn't be used. unrevoked3 might not work, it depends on how far the upgrade got before failing.
How would I root the phone? Do I use the usb cable and run a file?
If I shouldn't use unrevoked where can I find one I can safely use? It's all new to me.
Unrevoked is what you should use. You need to enable USB debugging and run the file.
If it works you'll end up in custom recovery, where you can install a rooted ROM.
I was downloading an RUU from TMO, but it was taking forever so I guess I won't be doing anything until tomorrow when I have a faster connection.
If you have an SLCD screen then running that is really not a good idea.
OK. So do I copy the custom ROM to the SD card before I root the phone or do I run it on the PC as well?
Yeah I don't think I have an SLCD screen, but would rather not take unnecessary risks.
Yes, you'll need the custom rom on the sdcard so will need to copy that separately. Unrevoked3 runs on the PC/Mac. If you have no card reader it's possible to upload the rom to the sdcard while in recovery, but it's a bit fiddly.
If you're certain you have an AMOLED screen then the t mobile RUU should work.
My phone came in July so I think it's AMOLED.
Looks like unrevoked3 is down at the moment with a redirect to unrevoked2.
I should be able to get the ROM on the SD card with a friend's non-android phone. Do I need a goldcard though as that may be a problem with my phone down.
Just follow the link to download version 3.14 (it's still unrevoked3).
No goldcard is needed to root or install a custom rom.
OK. Thanks for your patience! I guess I need to rename the ROM update.zip as I've seen mentioned elsewhere before I save it to the SD card.
I'll give it a go and post the results once I'm done , tomorrow I hope
You don't need to rename it. That's just for stock recovery. In custom recovery you get a basic filemanager where you can select the file.

please help me achieve root ive tried everything!!

hi, ive been trying to achieve root with unrevoked for the past 3 days, but i cant do it.. ive been able to (according to unrevoked 3.21) achieve root.
but in Hboot it says that i am not nand unlocked.... (i do have root to an extent because superuser is installed and busybox does say i have root although i cant install it)
so i also tried using unrevoked forever, but that gives me an error saying: unsupported system...
any details u need i will give you, please help..
stock desire, latest update.
thanks in advance
supa.
You won't necessaily have s-off, or nand unlocked, it depends on what phone you have for this to work using Unrevoked. There are other methods available if you wish to do this.
Have you actually tried installing an app that requires root access, like Setcpu or Titanium Backup, to see if it actually works?
I got an htc desire a month ago and got errors when I tried rooting with unrevoked. It turned out the hboot version was too recent (0.93) so I had to downgrade to 0.83 using this guide: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
It actually downgrades your phone to android 2.1 with Sense, but after that you can root your phone normally and then flash the Rom to any 2.2 Rom you want. It's a bit involved but the only way I could get root.
I wrote a quick guide for this before, which I'm reposting below. You can skip step 1 since it sounds like your phone is not branded.
Step 1:
Get an extra MicroSD card (2gig or whatever) and create a goldcard. You ONLY need this because if your phone is branded (eg. by a carrier... if any other names come up during boot, your phone is branded) and this is part of getting rid of that. If your phone is not branded, skip to step 2. Find out how here: android.modaco.com/content/general-discussion/305672/creating-a-goldcard/#entry1233023
Tip: you don't need an microSD card reader. You can format the microSD card in your phone by connecting your phone as a USB drive, and right-clicking the drive and formating. It MUST be FAT32 format, NOT FAT, so do it from the computer controls, not on the phone itself (because the phone itself does it in FAT format)
Step 2:
With your goldcard in your phone, you can now downgrade to Android 2.1. This kills two birds with one stone. A. It removes any branding from your phone and B. Lowers your hboot from higher versions to 0.83 which makes it possible to root your phone. Instructions here:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
Tip: if it fails the first time (as mine did) and it can't find the zip file at the end, make sure your goldcard was FAT32.
Now your phone will be running HTC Sense 2.1 unbranded. The next two steps will allow you to put any of the Froyo versions (with Sense or without, your choice) on your phone.
Step 3:
Root your phone with UnrEVOked. Instructions here:
rootmydroid.co.uk/guides/general/howto-root-your-htc-desire-wildfire-evo-incredible-with-unrevoked/
Tip: His instructions are great. His download pages are horrible, but they work eventually, just keep clicking.
Step 4:
Install any of the custom Android ROMs available. Instructions are also found on the above link for rooting the phone.
You can choose from any of the ROMs listed here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
I went with DeFroST, which is a nice Android ROM without Sense, since Android is better off on it's own, IMO.
Tip: If you don't have an MicroSD card reader, make sure you put the ROM's zip file on your MicroSD before you wipe your phone (Pt. 3, point 4 in the guide).
wow thanks for that..
my phone is rooted, i just want s-off.. but i have read that unrevoked doesnt work for gsm phones, which is what i have..
so i tried alpharev, which seems to be working for most people, but when i tried it using virtualbox, it tells me that i have a cdma phone, and to go back when i know what im doing or something like that..
i 100% have a gsm phone... why do i get this??
thanlks.
Download this:
http://alpharev.nl/alpharev.iso
Burn the image to a CD and boot your PC from it. Follow the instructions
All being well you'll end up S-OFF
as i said previously, ive tried that and it says i havent got a gsm phone when i do.
Dunno, ask them in their thread...

lol, cheers anyway. i'm going to try booting from cd instead, see if that will make a difference..
That's what I said to do and you said you've done it!!
ive tried it again using virtual box and it seems to be working this time, i havent done anything different... dont know y it didnt work last night, neither the phone or the computer have been rebooted..
if all goes well u wont hear from me..
Why not just boot your PC from the CD? It's SO much easier
too lazy to pick up my ass to go buy cdrs, it worked anyway whoop!!
thanks.

[Q] Root access to install apps to sd

Hi after spending about a week reading through forums I managed to change my friends HTC HD2 to android using the LEO "Stock" NAND Android ROM.
All went great thanks to the excellent instuctions on here.
I then put z4root on and app2sd and all worked great.
I then deceicded to buy an HTC desire for myself not the HD one.
However maybe I should have done some more reading first as I cant find a way to root device to install apps to sd card.
I dont really want to flash another rom as phone is new and under warrant. Can you root without flashing a new rom or somehow move them to sd
Have I just made a huge mistake buying this phone or is there a way.
All help appreciated thanks
How does rooting void the warranty less than flashing a custom rom? Don't answer cause it doesn't.
It is possible to root and keep the current rom, but if you want to enable A2SD then it's a lot of work (not talking about the froyo crap).
So if you want A2SD is suggest you root with Unrevoked and flash Leedroid. Don't forget to make a ext partition on the sd card before flashing.
Disclaimer: You are the only one responsible for you phone, no one else!
You can root the stock ROM as TheGhost 233 said. You can also use AlphaRev's S-Off as well on it if you wanted.
As for me, I couldn't be bothered with A2SD so I just S-Off'd and then used the n1table to increase my internal memory. The ROM I use uses bugger all in the system. Also, you can move apps to SD card anyway if you have 2.2+.

No, I don't think you've made a mistake buying this particular phone....seriously....
As for rooting, use the Unrevoked method which is the easiest....Alpharev S-OFF works too ( I think you can't flash custom HBOOT images if your phone has the latest PVT-4 NAND..better check on that..)
Here's the complete guide from the Desire Android Development section of the forum:

Thanks for the replies I am waiting on phone getting delivered today from virgin.
I will post back when I get a chance to have a look at it.
I got root using unrevoked3 but my phone is s-on
My phone is on virgin branded and I presume locked though not tried another sin in it yet.
If I wanted to flash leedroid Rom onto phone what steps would I have to do
I put on setcpu so that seems to have helped battery life but would like custom Rom on
Thanks
Sent from my HTC desire
Hold on wait a minute you don't have to flash a new ROM at all your v-mobile phone should be on froyo (android 2.2) current software version 2.22.351.3 which already lets you put some apps onto your sd card at the moment i only have 3 downloaded apps that are on phone only mode.
[edit] you can also add downloaded apps from computer to sd card and install with Astro - Every one that i have done this with enabled move to sd and i still have 98mb of space to store more apps (even with the ones that are installed by v-mobile)
Thanks for reply yes it is on new update but I thought some of the modded roms were using less battery power so I wanted to know how to install one.
I have rooted using unrevoked 3 but i notice my phone is s-on
Just wanted to know if someone could advise me on the steps to do this or point me to a guide.
Will look at that astro as well thanks.
I have modinstall also
The issue you have is should things go wrong you can't return to stock as the Virgin RUU hasn't been leaked, so make a gold card now before you continue. This way, should the worst happen, you can flash the generic HTC RUU to get back to stock
Then look at custom ROMs using A2SD+ - most do it these days but best to check the ROM thread in question to make sure. Then partition your SD card and flash the ROM and you're good to go.
S-OFF isn't something you NEED - just means you can make changes to the OS without having to go into recovery first. If you're not going to be making a lot of changes bar a new ROM then leave that for now

This is what i was thinking and knowing v-mobile if you can't find a stock ROM to flash back to may have no warranty. That's the only reason i havent messed with mine
Early version (2.1) are about so you could downgrade using the guide on here but I don't know if it'd work (depends on the HBOOT)
Either way, a gold card is needed
