Hi
I have just got my XDAIIs and the Wifi works, however the signal quality is poor i.e 30-40% and the TX rate is only 2M. This is with power save mode setting set to best performance and I am within 1 metre from the wireless router.
ANy ideas
mine is the same
What wireless router are you guys using? I've noticed it varies with different brands. At home I've got an Apple Airport Extreme and I get about the same as you guys, whereas at work we use 3COM wireless routers and at a distance of a few meters I get about 75-80% reception.
Dimitri
I'm using a 3com and reception is around 60% anywhere. Whether I'm stood next to it or upstairs and in the opposit corner of the house (i.e. lots of bricks in the way). It's not until I go outside and start walking away from the house that I get a sudden drop off.
In other words, I think the connection software is more at fault in how it reports the signal strength than the reception.
Real Wifi transmission rate
I read back a while ago here that the maximum transmission rate on the O2 xda II, not IIs, was limited to a throughput of 256K, eventhough reception was at 2mb etc, is this true for the IIs? This was was to internal systems of the xda etc, nothing to do with wifi card etc?
I've got a netgear and a buffalo and both are the same sort of reception
Thanks for the feedback guys.
I am using a Belkin WIreless router
Hi
Mines a Draytek 2600G complete with 2 high gain (5dBi antennae), same issues, poor wifi signal when not standing next to AP. Laptop with pcicma 54G card shows full signal at same location where XDA barely registers a signal.
This causes loads of problems with skype, which drops the call and takes the wifi connection with it (soft restart required to restore).
Nigel
Are you all using Bluetooth while trying to communicate with an 802.11 network?
Bluetooth and 802.11 both operate in the 2.4 GHz band, and because of Bluetooth's frequency hopping, it can seriously impair 802.11 performance.
Some devices with integrated Bluetooth and 802.11 have proprietary mechanisms to deal with this problem, but not all as it's not mandatory.
Hi
Nope, thought of that. Killed Bluetooth on handset, other bluetooth gadgets in house, other wifi stuff bar the AP and DECT phone, and I am not running the microwave!!
Same result, poor wifi range. Also tried with 3 separate AP's now same result each time.
Went to PC world this morning connected a couple of their demo IPAQ jobbies to their btopenzone AP, got the meters up and held mine next to ipaqs. Without fail, the IPAQ's were reading 3/4 signal and my XDA was barely registering a signal. Staff must have thought I was a nutter, but I wanted to prove the sh1te wifi issue to myself!
Nigel
Anyone got an SDIO wifi card that they can test with - i'd be interested to know now much better that performed.
Nigel
i'm sure it would perform mucho better. I get the 40% signal with my buffalo router... no matter where i stand. you'd think little things like this would have been discovered during the qa cycle.
I get a much better reception around the house with my XDA 2 with an SDIO sandisk Wi-Fi card than I do with my XDA IIs with built in Wi-Fi
I don't have a Blue Angel yet, as I'm waiting to see if many of the reported issues (like this one) get resolved. However, I have a few comments/questions/suggestions:
Does anyone here know where the 802.11 antenna is inside the Blue Angel's case?
Being a software engineer who develops device drivers for 802.11 hardware, I've worked with a fair amount of WiFi devices. Chances are, the problem everyone is experiencing with WiFi is almost sure to be due to a REALLY BAD internal WiFi antenna design. The antenna is either being shielded by something inside the enclosure or picking up interference from another component.
If it's possible to shut off the internal WiFi card, one way to test the above theory is to try an SDIO WiFi card in the Blue Angel. If anyone can try this, please post your results.
If we can get information about where the antenna is in the case, it might be possible to reroute the internal antenna, or (less desirable) attach an external antenna to improve reception.
In addition, improving WiFi reception will almost surely improve battery life as well as a side effect.
It amazes me that customers of a $900 device have to jury-rig solutions to so many problems...
I use an USB Wifi dongle by Asus, reception is good arround the house, even through a lot of walls
I agree with poster above wifi on blue Angel sucks
I have both Blue Angel and XDA2 +Socket SDIO, and there is no doubt that the Socket sdio XDA2 combo has noticeably better reception, having done tests (ie trying them both from a distant spot, XDA2 can maintain connection, XDA2s can't). I'm shipping the XDA2s back and waiting for the Mini/Magician. Reception is the key to this when trying to hop on random hotpsots in the streets...so sayonara Blue Angel, too bad though...
Also, FYI on XDA, speed limit is 256K, not 2mb, due to buffers etc. routers do not prefer either system and WEP works fine on both.
Has anyone managed to get the XDA2 and socket or sandisk SD wifi card working with a dling 54g access point namely the dwl2000ap+?
I've heard of a few issues with DLINK 54g access points and these cards?
Cheers
I have the SX66 / same as PDA2k but built like XDA IIs, I use the built in wifi alot but I also Have the SDIO Socket Card also and run it when a need longer distance. No conflicts of any kind that I have seen, works well with my D-Link Router but reception is not so good with built in.
Have a Linksys WAG54G 54mb, and have tried on Dlink 108Mb running both on mixed mode. One thing I will suggest that others have mentioned but cant be explained enough, as most people place their DECT phone next to their wireless router. There needs to be at least 2M distance between the two antenna's otherwise interference will kill signal dramatically, even on different channels.
With this said, have tried XDA Mini with combo wifi card, XDA2 with wifi card, and XDAIIs with builtin, and the power management turned off to give maximum power. Yes the IIs consumes the most amount of juice, followed by the XDA2, then the Mini.
On a quick scan, drive home using wififofum, with the 3 of them mounted on the dash, came up with the following results on drive to and from work.
Access points discovered
XDA2 - 78
XDAIIs - 89
XDA Mini - 82
I might also mention, that half of these have no encryption at all, or have left noobie default settings on routers - thanks guys ;-)
Overall like the IIs, except heats up too quick and loses battery life, especially using the wireless. XDA Mini rocks, just because the size and I can place the wifi card in when i need it, and the XDA 2 is just the stable toy I have had for the last 12 months.
where did you get the XDA mini?
I didn't know that it was out in the UK yet?
Looking at the HTC universal, I can only imagine that the designers either have VERY big hands, or have never had access to a mobile phone less than 15 years old.
I am currently struggling to keep my sense of humour with my Blue Angel (QTEK9090) which is the only device with the functionality that I need, but which sadly lacks the reliability. And as for the size of the damn thing... come back the IPAQ 4150
However, nothing out there seems to be able to offer the range of features needed.
The following is a simple wishlist for a new phone. I would be very interested to hear your comments, on workarounds or other recommendations.
Must have:
quad band phone
GPRS
3-G
>2mp camera
Bluetooth
WiFi
voice memo
640x320 resolution
>3 day battery life (hot swappable)
FM radio built in
standard issue stero output jack (who the hell has wired headphones these days?)
slimline form factor.
Would be nice:
built in GPS
buily in optical/laser full size keyboard (plus stand, I suppose)
What's the point of:
IR
Built in thumb-keyboards
phone the size of a brick
phone mic that can't pick up what you say...
a calendar that doesn't tell you what you are doing from day to day...
OS that monstrously and catastrophically and REGULARLY fails.
True, would be nice to have it all
But I guess its a marketing strategy thing wherein we cant have everything in one reliable device.
What about a weather proof phone, less weight and a flashligt on the camera?
Oh and also a phone which won;t fall out...

lol, you dont want much then???
ok, gps, would be nice, but if that was added, im sure the size of the device might increase, also fm radio, yes thats a good idea, if you can have it on a ****ty nokia mobile, then i would have thought this be as standard on an advanced pda, but rather than fm radio, better it be digital..... apart from that the new universal has most of the things listed above by yourself....
and how big do you want a keyboard???, the one on the blueangel is a bit tricky when fast typing, but the one on the universal seems more than needed....... the fone the size of a brick comment, its not a fone, its a pda with a fone built in, if you want a small pda, then the universal and the magician is a fone for you!!!
and the newer devices to be released, as far as i know, will all come equipped with windows mobile 2005, which from what ive heard, is the better version from microsoft to date, tho having not tested cannot comment on the stablility, but im sure these newer faster more powerful devices will come with a more stable version on wm2005.
on the other hand, id like to see devices to come with a 1gb sd card as standard, 5mega-pixel camera, with built in flash, and ditch the IR and create bluetooth builds that not only fix problems, but speed the bluetooth transfer rate up some more as i find, if your sending mp3's and large files, it drains the battery!!!!hell, why not stick some kind of solar panel on the top and it can charge in the daylight when you dont use it, lol,
peace.... 8)
Is there any way to put video out through hdmi while using evo's headphones for audio? When I'm at work I would like to be able to hook up video to my computer monitor and plug my speakers into my headphone jack so a few more people can watch movies.
Totally!!! OR using a projector that doesn't have a built in speaker...
Left with no sound...
only work-around I can think of is maybe bluetooth a2dp? might over-ride the audio to hdmi?
I'll report once I try this.
Thanks for looking into it. i thought there might be an app to disable the sound through hdmi kind of like what i do with my laptop, I can toggle the sound between my tv and the laptop speakers. I can see why there wouldn't be much demand for something like this, but it would be nice for me and my work buddies. The problem is for security reasons at work, we don't get internet access, we're really not even supposed to have phones with cameras, but they don't say anything if we're not waiving it around in their faces. I work 12 hour shifts. In 1 month I work 7 day shifts and 7 night shifts, one for each day of the week. That means once a month I have to watch football on my phone, which isn't bad for me, but 2-3 more people just doesn't work crowded around a 4" screen. so any way to make this work would be very appreciated.
Found this and it looked like a bargain. £27.75 delivered in white. black one is currently £50 quid. Should be just the job.
Nokia MD-310 Wireless Music Reciever - White
will let you all know how it goes.
Thumbs up
Received my apt x receiver and now the review,
The build quality if the unit is top. It's a gloss finish plastic construction but it's got good weight to it and the button has a nice feel too. The blue light isn't harsh and I'm surprised at how nice it looks in white. I was going to tuck it out of view but now I've got it I don't think I will.
Nfc doesn't work properly with my s3. It detects it but the s3 has it down as an unrecognised tag. I'd guess that there is no industry standard way to get Nfc to ok a bluetooth connection. Press the button for a few seconds, a quick scan and we were paired. Since Nfc only serves to save a few seconds in pairing this won't be a big deal though it is a little annoying that this simple easy just works method of pairing didn't work.
Audio lag? - watched a few minutes of russel howard on iplayer and the audio seems to me to be in time with the video which is great news obviously as it can be used for more than just straight audio streaming. There might be a very slight lag if i was pushed to admit it but I found it more than tolerable. Its a massive improvement on previous iterations of bluetooth.
Sound quality is very good. I didn't play any flacs to test the limits of apt x but I did have a couple of 320kbps mp3s. These sounded rich and clear. I was genuinely surprised by the sparkle and depth. I'm used to bluetooth streaming though though my head unit in the car but this is another level of fidelity. It sounded absolutely great on my nad separates. The other option was a marantz networked dac media played but for now I'm very happy with this indeed. I'd like to hear it side by side to a premium hifi dac. It would have to be astounding in order to convince me to spend more than this though, not because I'm tight or not really bothered about sound quality, but because this offers exceptional value for money and totally surpasses by expectations for audio streaming over bluetooth.
In comparison to a direct line out I would say that bluetooth streaming has a clear edge. This might change with voodoo sound, but still, not bad eh!
£27 quid and the old hifi has been dragged kicking and screaming into 2012 and it sounds pretty damn good to boot!
Thanks for the heads up ordered one:good:
Shame about the NFC but not a biggie.
Same experience
Just bought this MD-310 today, and The NFC tag is not working.. :crying:
This is my error:
View attachment 1152792
Why did I even bother to buy it, when I did read about you guys's failures too..
Even when paired, the sound quality is ok, but still some gabs now and then..
Got mine this morning, I'll have a play and report back later:good:
Hey
I'm looking at buying one too, it looks like the NFC is set up for a particular app on a Nokia device, that being said, there should be no reason I can't write a simple app for us to install that will recognise that particular tag and set up the connection.
If I get my hands on one of these I'll look into it.
I seem to have a problem with aptx and wifi streaming. Try a youtube video (a hd movie trailer) and it starts to stutter almost immediately. Anyone else get this?
Maybe you should install this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.baggy.play360
Don't know if it works, but give it a try

Does this only stutter audio streamed over WiFi when the Bluetooth device is connected or does it do the same when playing through the phone speaker/Jack output? I only ask because I had some real beef with WiFi dropping a reconnecting and this was obviously most notable when streaming.
There is a thread. From what I can surmise gs3 doesn't play well with wideband WiFi routers.I had it on tp link, bt homehub found others through Google but all seem to be wideband. Solutions seem to be changing the settings on your router to 2.4ghz only . I changed the channel to something less crowded to and this seems to have done the trick for me without narrowing my bandwidth.
This might be well of the mark, it might just be local obstructions/rf interference. If you've got a clear line of sight then I'd try to eliminate potential sources. WiFi might be it. My tplink card used to mash my bt mouse bandwidth. Is it near a pc?
Any other ideas anybody?

Sorted works perfectly :highfive:
My Mini Review:0-10 (10=Perfect)
Sound quality 8/10
The best BT streaming device I've used to date, beating the Blackberry by quite some margin and I would put it on par with the QED which costs considerably more.
Range/Distance 7/10
Better than most, but does have its limits
NFC
Does work but not out of the box, but can be made to work with a little effort and a couple of free apps from the market place.
Looks
Always subjective, looks ok to me, quite like the leds that illuminate to inform that the unit is connected & streaming.
Value 9/10
Well worth the asking price at £27
Things to note.
(This maybe my rom, so if this is not the same for you then not to worry)
I recommend a few pair & unpair exchanges to make sure of a good pairing, this will eliminate any choppy play back issues.
I also noticed when connecting that my Wifi would disconnect from the phone (Bit of pain when streaming from Google music). Again I recommend the above.
My overall score is 7/10 :good:
Hurry get them while there cheap :victory:

Sorry for the brief explanation. What I meant was, that when I play e.g. a youtube video so that it is streaming over the wifi. And at the same time I listen to the sound over bluetooth from my stereos.
The result is that my audio stutters, the video itself plays fine, no problems there. But the audio starts to stutter over bluetooth and from the speakers it sounds normal.
This happens only when I use wifi and bluetooth at the same time. If the wifi is idling (streaming buffer is full or video gets loaded, or I just don't use it) it doesn't occur.
I use spotify for music and that plays good without stutter and it sounds great.
But I rarely use a2dp/aptx when watching videos, so it doesn't bother me as long as spotify works. That's the main reason I bought this. AptX and 320kbps spotify, plus the perfect 7.7" size and a great case on my livingroom table ;-)
For those who have issues with wfi disconnecting.
Try this.
Establish BT connection with 310
Disconnect mobile data.
In Wifi forget your network.
Turn wifi off then on again.
Connect back to your wifi connection. (make sure in advanced that sleep is set to never.)
Reconnect mobile data.
Worked for me (Streaming from Google music as I type)
One thing to remember with BT3 as the SGS3, uses and the same with the nokia adapter there or the Samsung HS3000 is that BT3 use the wifi card now...
Bluetooth 3.0+HS provides theoretical data transfer speeds of up to 24 Mbit/s, though not over the Bluetooth link itself. Instead, the Bluetooth link is used for negotiation and establishment, and the high data rate traffic is carried over a collocated 802.11 link.
That is why we can get the bigger bandwith but also why when we push the wifi chip while using BT we will hear stutter on high bitrate sound (I hear it when i am home and and listing to FLAC over BT and the phone uses the internet)
I know we got 802.11n wifi in the phone but still it is sending to 2 ap's witch have never been the strong side of wifi.
Tried some flac's today, all I can say is WoW :good:
How did you get nfc to work? I downloaded the app from the link but what do I set the application to open? I get a beep every time I place the phone next to the receiver but nothing happens.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Never mind, I figured it out, had to disable tags from application manager

Great find!
Good spot, I was about to order a QED U-Play however this looks like pretty much the same thing at half the price. How many devices can you pair it with?

Hi,
I'd like to introduce my project...
I'm building a vintage kit car using the BMW Z3 (2000 model year) as the base car. I want the car to have access to tech but for the tech to be hidden in the centre console, actually on the underside of the top of the console. The concept is that when no tech is needed (for example at shows) the car will retain its vintage looks but when tech is required (i.e. when being driven) the tech becomes available. I'm imagining a top section of the console which will hinge up and reveal the tablet. There isn't going to be much space on the underside of the console which is why I'm going for a tablet rather than one of the many Chinese android units.
As an aside, I've just ordered an Icebox Octa core 64G Rom / 4G Ram unit (TTF1983 ) for my facelift (2015) Vauxhall Insignia which I expect to arrive in the next week or so.
I've already researched other people's projects which has helped me to get to where I currently am. Where I currently am is ordering many of the bits and pieces which I expect to need.
My tablet project is intended to be a much simpler affair than the Icebox unit:
DAB and FM radio
Rear and, hopefully, front camera
Sat nav
OBD II
Mirror my phone if needs be
What I won't need includes:
Steering wheel controls
Air con management
Electric roof control
Pretty much everything else that an android head unit offers
What I might need is:
BT Phone but in a convertible that's going to be a bit of an issue any way
Because the car will only be used sporadically I need an effective power management system, one which will kick in after perhaps a month's lack of use.
My tablet of choice is a Galaxy Tab S 10.5 (SM-T800) which I happen to have lying around, it's currently running stock Android 6.01 . The tablet is a wifi model so the plan is to hotspot it to my Galaxy S8 when I'm on the road
I've already ordered
a 12V to 5V 3A dc-dc converter
a 4 port USB2 hub
an OTG Y cable to take power from the dc-dc converter to feed the tablet and to move data between the devices
an easycap UTV007 video capture device (for the parking camera units)
a USB to USB relay to allow the easycap to feed the video through to the USB when reverse is connected
an 'intelligent' video selector which has two video inputs (front and rear cameras) and one video output (to the head unit via the USB relay). The unit keeps the relevant camera connected to the output. I need to take delivery of this and play with it to see what it can really do.
an ELM327 bluetooth OBD II device
a NooElec Smart DVB+ device
a Creative Soundblaster DAC
I know that I'm going to need a decent amplifier between the DAC and the speakers (suggestions and recommendations welcome). I might also want a manual volume control, possibly with a push button mute facility. I've probably missed a bunch of stuff...
I've rooted the tablet and tweaked it (overwritten lpm) so that when the ignition is switched on then the tablet will boot. I've used MacroDroid to tell the device to switch off 10 seconds after the ignition is switched off (unless the ignition gets switched on again within those 10 seconds)
I'm looking very closely at the Agama Car Launcher to pull much of it together. There are some aspects of this launcher that I'd like to see improved. For example I'd like to be able to get back to the home screen from the maps screen (or other screens) CarWebGuru places a button on the screen to allow this. It would be nice also to have a split screen so that I can have maps on one side and Audio / OBD / any other app on the other side. I'm aware that I might not get all that I wish for
One thing I'd REALLY like to see improved is the cold boot time which is currently 50 seconds. I might consider a custom ROM if anyone knows of a ROM that will fire up quickly, or any other tweak which will significantly shorten the cold boot time. 10 seconds or less would be nice. I've looked at Cyanogenmod 12.1 or 13 with the quick boot utility but I understand that the quick boot is basically hibernate and may not survive a month without the ignition being switched on.
Hopefully I've given a reasonable overview of what I'm looking to achieve and hopefully there will be people out there that can help tie everything together and troubleshoot when the time comes.
Russell
nice project, good luck with it..
Keep us posted on your project progress...
Wondering how this is coming along?
My question for you is, will the tablet charge and use data via the OTG cable simultaneously? Did you need to run a custom kernel to enable that?
thanks.
Quite in consonance with what I've been wanting to achieve. Nevertheless, the plan was frustrated by other priorities. Would love to see how this emerges. Meanwhile here's a basic experiment I've tried.
