Minimalist 6.5 Rom? - HTC Excalibur

Hey everyone. I am a first time poster and a bit of a WinMo noob (I stick to Android and iPhone for my development). I have been using my old Dash with the 3VO rom ever since my G1 broke, but I had a question.
I like the 3VO rom, but I would really like to try something a bit more minimalist, closer to a vanilla 6.5 rom. I basically just need the HTC tethering utility. Is there a rom out there that would meet my needs? I did a lot of searching and found nothing.
P.S. Is there a place I could go to learn the basics of WinMo manipulation? I would like to try my hand at putting together a rom.

Why don´t you give AlekSS´s Rom a try? It´s like a Vanilla version of WM6.5.
About your need for manipulation, try to contact the chefs: AlekSS, NRGZ28, Ookba, Rickywatt (I think he is no longer an active excalibur chef), Stylez. They are not rockstars and very accessible. PM them.
Also, take a look @ the Development and Hacking forum. You can find valuable info there.

Tom Codon and Meschle Should Join Forces To make a Super Rom.

Hi,
I think tom and meschle should join forces, making a fast, well performing (meschle) rom with good applications with an awesome GUI (tom).
Tom's roms always have amazing bootscreens, themes, and an overall very nice GUI, whilst they lack performance.
Meschle's roms always perform well and are very fast, but they lack the visual aattractiveness as Tom's roms.
Therefore, combining the two would produce an all rounded super rom!
What do you all think?
you can do it, you re the man!
no not me, meschle and tom!
Agreed. But there would still have to be some compromises made as rom can't be 100% as beautiful as Tom's and 100% fast as Meschle's.
Whats wrong with the new Vanilla ? It is just perfect...
Just install HtcHome or what you prefer for your design change bootscreen if you like.
Can it be better ? I guess not
can't find the keyboard icon and skin as in B&B
I don't qgree with you uzzy.
First of all, they are not the only coockers.
More, everybody has its own style: you mention the main difference between these two one but the purpose is to have everybody having its onw "touch" in roms.
Even if it is WM, the coockers are not MS

I agree with you this sener.
I think it would be a lot more effective if we filles the wiki with so much useful information that everybody could cook his own ROMs. The only thing we might need is a kitchen with a better gui. I used both of their ROMs and like both for the stated reasons. Since I couldn't decide which to use I cooked my own ROM.
You'll have to spend about 50 hours of reasearch to be able to create your own version if you are a beginner, with a little help and a lot of computer experience you can handle it in 2 hours or less.
Fast and super stylish won't work, compare XP and Vista!

If you don't like it you don't have to use it, but why deny other people the opportunity to experience something new?
Just because you don't like the idea, doesn't mean you have use your first post ever to stop tom and meschle making a rom together......its their choice, not yours.
And also, where did i say they are the only cookers? - I didn't, so why say "First of all, they are not the only coockers". This fact is totally irrelevant.
I mentioned Tom and Meschle because they are the BEST cookers for Artemis (Not the only ones).
Oh and btw, learn to spell.
Well, they are the best cookers in this forum that publish their work. I'm pretty sure there are guys (or girls?) out there that laugh about the beginner mistakes people are making here.
I'm not saying that I'm better than any other cooker out there, but I never published any ROM for legal reasons and because I don't want 1000 questions/answers for each ROM I produce. No thanx, don't got the time.

I agree on this one!!
If somebody could provide a good kitchen with a better GIU, I would be able to learn to cook myself.
Now I just don't know how to start... you need to read/combine several threads to be able to get the info you need to start to learn...
If just some of those master cookers, can make a decent guide for us, we'll be able to do it ourselfs...
Hopefully one day somebody would do this guide and kitchen with a better gui, cause I really hope I can learn to cook
Believe me, cooking is not very difficult, (in my opinion) the Artemis' Wiki is crap if you are a beginner and want to learn to cook. I recently found out how this works and was amazed how fast you can cook a ROM. I'm currently busy at University but next week my tests are over and I will start creating my tutorials with pictures and videos.
You need HyperCoreKitchen, OK Package Creator and a official ROM, that's it. As soons as you know how to do it you can create your own ROM in minutes. I'll make a big thread out of it, you won't miss it.
I don't want to offend those who have spent a lot of time creating tutorials and writing into the wiki (thanx for your work guys!), but there are almost no all-in-one tutorials. I read in the Kaiser, Hermes, Artemis and some other wikis and forums to get all the informations I needed. Basically if you read the Hermes Cookbook and use OK Package Creator instead of doing all the package stuff it states there then you know what to do.

Best WM6 ROM to upgrade to for someone who NEED IDEAS!! but is open to ALL opinion

Simple question I want all opinions, I just got my 2nd 8525, and this time I am gonna do it RIGHT!! (last 1 i had I was super n00b and kiled it within 48hrs I cried for a week) Anyways I just want the simplest answer or opinion I want my 8525 to last forever. SO I will flash it to the BEST WM6 ROM once and never again will I change it.
SO I am looking for just the BEST GENERAL OVERALL WM6 ROM, I am just gonna be using it as phone and only use the WiFI to connect to the NET, so the ROM I am looking for needs to be STABLE and needs to NOT ruin me or my 8525, I have been reading everyones SIGs to see what ROMs ya'll use, but I just WANT the Opinions of the regulars here
WHAT Windows Mobile 6 ROM should I upgrade to?? I will take ALL suggestions PLEASE help me, I dont wanna kill my 8525 again, I just want to flash it and leave it at that!!
THANK YOU EVERYONE
P.S I'm not a complete n00b if u read the whole thread you'll see I do my homework
the number one advise which everyone has been giving which has been pounded into everyone's mind, which you somehow manage to avoid listening to, is to first install hardspl. Hardspl is a must if you want to upgrade your rom.
as for the best rom recommendation, i will tell you this, there is no such thing as a best rom, everyone will have their own preferences, what works for one may not work for another person. just see any thread on ppl asking for best roms and you will see many many different replies.
just by the fact that you are making this post i will assume you want the easy way out, you rather have ppl do the recommendations for you than read and learn on your own, so i will give you the easy way out solution. Install the official at&t wm6 rom, and just soft reset before the customization starts and there you go, all done. its either that or return you phone and get a firefly. or a symbian phone. but i highly recommend the firefly.

Still don't believe noobs don't read the guides before installing. As test7875 said above you need to go through the upgrade guide, and possibly wiki pages before you do anything to your phone.

this is my 2nd time around if you Wouldnt MIND checking out the attached jpeg of my 8525 Bookmarks you would see that I do DO MY homework, I have read the wiki over and over, and I already have DONE the HARSPL V7 first .. (from olipro).
Once you've got HardSPL on, it's up to you really. Some are good and some are...flaky, to be polite.
I would start with the official one from your carrier and use that for a day or two so you have a good, hopefully stable, benchmark to measure the competition up against.
Bang all your apps on it and see how it runs then try the same thing on the cooked ones.
Smiffy.
I Phrased my Subject of the Thread and my actual question WRONG, I know that ther is NO best ROM is all about what features u want, be I want the opinions of you guys, the ones that call me a n00b, I value your opinion, I did my homework, I just want to flash my 8525 ONCE to a WM6 ROM that will last me the life of the phone. Heres what I like 1. theme skins 2. stability 3. good wifi 4. and I guess I want no bloatware so it will be a FAST ROM
So basically I just want to know what you guys (the experts) can suggest to me. Just want 1 ROM that will enable me to use my 8525 to the best of its capabilities!!
thank you
nicknowsky
i have used the offical ROM on my last 8525, and thats the one that got me i n troube and killed my 1st 8525
if u read the post above I gave a description of what i am looking for, or you know what I would like to know What The Most Popular WM6 ROM Is?? (no 6.1)

its hard to pick a ROM for you. Generally you can't go wrong with Farias/Dr Puttinghams/schaps to name a few. As for applications, be careful not to overload your phone with .cab's as this will slow it down.
There are a number of ROM's out there which are stripped of applications and built more for speed (though right now I'm having a complete blond moment and can't remeber one of them....doh!!!), and from there you can add to your own personal preferences.
Hey SPARTAN, I noticed u are using WM6.1, but before that what ROM did you use, and better yet what was the ROM that you used the absolute LONGEST??? or what is your personal favorite??
I'm a bit of a ROM freak, as I never keep the same ROM for any real length of time. Think I've used pretty much everything with little tweaks here and there.
Mostly used Schaps, as he tends to provide very stable ROM’s and eagerly awaiting Schaps 6.1 full version, but currently using Faria-R32 / Dr Puttingham WM6.1
Well I am close to going thru with the ROM flash, I just did my weekly REINSTALL of my operating system (been using XP lately) and I just installed the necessary drivers and programs to keep my computer from messing up or having ANY sort of error while the flash process is going on, just the very basics installed, thats really what the cause of death was for my first AT&T 8525(HERMES100) I got sloppy and was then a n00b, did a real n00bish thing and KILLED my 1st 8525. The funny thing with that was I had it for only 48hrs, and I cried for a week after. I still have it, might send it to HTC USA for repair.
But getting back to the todays upgrade, I am still in the process of deciding what ROM I will install, so I gotta ask are there ANY last recommendations on which WM6 ROM I should use?? I just wanna hear any and all last opinions
1st : Shamanix Ultimate v2 Final and 2nd : Kinokin WM6 Final.
I'm valuing ALL opinions
I know, I know this getting annoying and I keep asking dumb questions but I wanna decide, so here is the question
Which is better and/or more stable Schap's WM6 Pro 4.00 or 4.01???
and how good is Schap's WM6 Pro 4.31 cause I am almost leaning towards 4.31, but I like I have said before I want stability and something thats gonna keep my 8525 running longest and strongest
This is gonna be it NO more stupidity coming from ME, I just want last opinions on Schap's WM6 Pro 4.00 - 4.01 and 4.31
and THANK YOU everyone who took the time to help me, I know members like me get annoying, but I do my homework, I just wanted a little help
THANKS
Opinions, eh? I'm opinionated AND drunk...
Here's mine: go with 6.0 instead of 6.1.
People experienced in dealing with little niggles and issues by altering registry entries or installing lots of small cabs get on fine with 6.1, depending on which ROM of course. If you're new to upgrading then the issues that have yet to ironed out of 6.1 in such as a way as to make it a simple 1-click-to-install-and-you're-done job will probably annoy you too much. Smiffy's advice was really good mate: start with a ROM you can rely on, which basically means your own carrier's. If they haven't produced a WM6 yet (mine, OrangeUK, haven't and probably won't as they do lag rather badly in that area) then go for the most basic, cut-down and reportedly stable 6.0.
After you've got used to using your carrier's mobile you'll notice when the phone's faster or not when using different things on a new ROM. Only move up to 6.1 when you're well-used to how your phone fares with 6.0. (I'm assuming you won't install any benchmarking software. Not calling you lazy as I don't either - I just judge the 'feel' of it.)
I heartily recommend using mattk_r's Pandora Naked 6.0 - it's stable as any ROM I've ever used, including official ROMs. Give me a minute, I'l fetch the link.
Here you go.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1731669
I use a ROM based on the kitchen with a lot of my own kit thrown in. But I didn't start out like that; I started out like you, needing a few pointers, doing a lot of reading and occasionally annoying the hell out of myself.
By the way, if you're not using an SDHC card (which I assume you're not from the sounds of things) do me a favour and stick a copy of the original carrier's ROM on your SD card after renaming it HERIMG.nbh. Should you do a ChunkyMonkey Special and temporarily brick your phone (I used to do it all the time mate) it's an easy out in many cases, even if you can't boot past your bootloader.
(But take the SD card out when you flash your ROM. Although that's good practice anyway, so just do it.. )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=359917&highlight=ultimate
As you can see (if you checked!) Ultimate is based on Schaps 4.31 ROM and more refined.
I'd go for LVSW.
Seriously man, you're asking the impossible. If you've read the forum so throroughly as you've claimed, you'd know that once you start, you'll not stop. Each of the ROMs, whilst good in their own way, has some kind o prolems with it that will make you change it for something else.
For example - Schaps 4.31 - an excellent rom but you have to install a fix for button 5 plus a couple of other gripes. Nothing major but enough to make me eventually keep looking once something different comes along.
You're not going to find the "one" rom.
The only place you'll find the one is in the matrix. Flashing is like the red pill. You're free of restraint but it comes at a cost.
I know I am asking for a "DREAM" I really just wanted opinions of what would be a GOOD, solid WM6 ROM, cause I am gonna flash it ONCE to the ROM I pick and that s IT, not more flashing or trying out new ROMs and this or that.
Put it this way IF you all had to CHOOSE just 1 WM6 ROM to flash and the fate of the world was riding on your choice of ROM, it had to be stable and save humanity, What ROM would that be??
thats the kinda opinions I want to help me make my choice

Install Tilt WinMob 6.1 on 8525 what if?

What would happen if I attempted to download (from htc) and install the windows mobile 6.1 update for the tilt on my 8525? I am currently running SPL-2.10.Olipro.. do you thing it would brick the phone? I mean why wouldn't it work? The tilt is a 400mhz process same as the 8525.. only added features on the tilt is the GPS and auto focus camera...Any thoughts? yes I am a noob.

you are welcome to be the first one to try! such old questions that has been answered many many times.
i am not talking about cooked versions.. I am talking about OEM. I rather not be the first one to try but technically what would happen?
first of all the RAM and ROM size is different, it will turn your hermes to a brick ... but again, you're more than welcome to be the first one to try.
well then that is all I needed to know. That is the reason why I can not do it.. cause the ram and the rom size is different. Thank You.
You wont be able to install it. But if you would like to brick your hermes, then go ahead and try it and let us know
GOD DAMN!!! Congrats Men!
The most inspirated question i have heard I come from wizard threads and letme tell you...
The RUU original will tell you ERROR (XXXX) Wrong device or wrong ID or wrong ROM Update Utility
God Damn!!! but if you try to extract the NBF from the exe with winrar...
maybe it's named Ruu_signed.nbf for Hermes... or its calle NK.nbf as in Wizard or maybe is called Dont_extract_me_fool.nbf
Maybe yopu can rename it to RUU Signed.nbf and put it on RUU Wrapper and run it!!!
I know a guy that has an Universal and flash a Custom rom for Wizard on its...
OBVIOUSLY it is bricked!!!! a blank screen only! no Bootloader no hardreset.
So... answered bye

I know that this has been answered--NO but I thought you might like to know a bit more.
1--The hermes uses a completely different chipset and video set up.
2--the ROM and RAM sizes are completely different. The tilt has more than two times the amount that the hermes has
3--The Hermes is a single processor device running a 400Mhz as you stated but the tilt is a dual processor device --one running the os and the other handling the calls to hardware such as the radio and gps.
4--The devices take completely different drivers. You should have researched the specs before asking this type of question.
Finally, winmobile is not like xp. It is not built to handle any hardware you through at it. It is very customized for the hardware on which it is installed. It has to be to fit in the small storage on these devices.
There are 6.1 versions of cooked roms already for the hermes. just use one of those! Better yet, don't ever flash your device because ...well I am sure you can figure out the rest of that sentence!
Tilt is very old phone...

Enjoy your fantastic and fabulous thread.... n00bs!!!
I think he wants an original 6.1 on his hermes... thats all... but men why dont you read there is a thread with this question.
I think we all got our noob bashing off our chest and I think the OP has got the message its not a good idea. How bout we drop this pointless thread now.....
Another noob here
I realize that y'all become impatient and annoyed with noobs, but this very question is what led me to this site in the first place. I apologize that I'm just a concerned and inexperienced consumer trying to gain knowledge from the best source I can find online, and that I haven't really mastered searching this site as well as everyone else to find the answers to my dilemma.
I have an AT&T 8525 and HTC told me that they aren't going to do any more updates, and also, no, I can't download the Tilt ROM onto my phone. In fact, they planned to pull the WM 6 ROMs off their site on October 31. I just rechecked the HTC site this evening, and they've removed *all* updates for the 8525 from the page I used to visit. So if I brick my phone by doing some silly noob thing, I can't even go back and get the old WM 6.0 ROM.
I've already had the opportunity to see the new AT&T Fuze since it hit the stores yesterday, but I'm wary of buying it the minute it comes out. I would prefer to lurk for a while and see what the rest of y'all have to say in the Raphael forums before I spend the money.
Please be charitable to people like me who are just trying to be cautious. I love the phone I have because it's been very reliable, but yet it's obvious that there is a "planned obsolescence" for the 8525. Meanwhile, I'm just looking here for something I can do to get WM 6.1 for my 8525 until I'm satisfied that they've gotten the bugs out of the Fuze. I think there's still plenty of life left in my 8525 and you might say I just want to renew my love affair with it.
OK, noob rant over..thanks for your consideration!
Step 1... Install Hard SPL V7 onto your 8525. It helps recover your Hermes if it does go south while doing the update.
Step 2... Look at the WM06 section of the forum. Just about ALL the roms displayed there at the moment are Wm6.1. Read the Chefs writeup about their ROM and see if you like it.
If you did a search with the keywords "Hermes roms" it may have led you back to the original stock ROMs and cooked ROMs. These are pretty old now though.
Cheers...
It doesn't hurt to actually get your own library of ROMs, I made sure I have my stock Telstra rom stored on my hard drive. Since you knew that the stock ROM you use was about to be pulled you should've downloaded it so if something does go wrong you actually have it and don't remain victim to HTC's will. Now it may be harder to find the stock rom you use...

Switching to the Dash!

Hey guys,
I recently lost my phone and since I don't want to spend a lot of money on the new touch Pro 2,
I decided to get the Dash for now.
I Haven't got the phones in my hand yet, But I did order it.
From the previous phones I used, there were things called Clean roms.
do they have that for this phone?
I tried searching, bit i didn't see anything called Clean.
thanks
and what do you consider to be a 'clean' rom?
he might be talking about the vanilla rom
Thanks, I'll look around for the vanilla rom.
to me, Clean is anything without carrier branding.
and if possible, as little custom program installed. I like to install them myself.
any you guys recommend?
Thanks again

6.5?

can the touch pro 2 run 6.5? or does it get the upgrade to 6.5?
yes, there are multiple 6.5 builds out there. what carrier do you use?
i have tmobile....i am new to the WinMo platform, i wanted to get the 6.5 upgrade and also run Android on my device.....does the Android hack support 6.5?
6.5 supports the android hack. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but you boot into windows and then load android. If your phone was purchase in the last month or two from Tmo you should already have 6.5 installed.
Here are some links for T-Mo 6.5:

Welcome from the Feisty Woman
Hi welcome to xda and enjoy your new brick...
Sorry, just some *****y humor to say before you do ANYTHING please read and then re-read all the wiki's/manuals/stickies in the Rhodium forum...there are steps you must take before "playing" with your phone, such as unlocking it. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you understand these steps or you will have a very pretty, very expensive paperweight aka brick.
6.5 is available as both a stock upgrade and custom roms. If your device is very new it may already have 6.5 on it. Droid is not fully functional yet, but it is becoming so very quickly...again, before attempting any rom change, RTFM!!
I would strongly urge you to read in both rom and droid sub-forums of Rhodium, as well as in the general sub-forum. Stickies are the best place to start.
Happy tinkering and welcome to xda, you will become seriously addicted and probably turn into a rom whore like most of us (that's the fun part)!!

Frankly, if my TP2 had the bigger processor that the HD2 has, it would be absolutely PERFECT (yes, I have processor envy!)
That being said...I would not trade in my TP2 for an HD2...I love the sturdiness of my TP2, I love the physical keyboard. I am very hard on phones, and I tested the HD2 out in the store and it felt like, to me, a wimpy iPhone...like I would snap it in half...but then my phone must battle makeup, hairbrushes, and whatever other girly stuff is in my purse that makes it weigh 50 pounds...so I need a bulky, sturdy device.
I do not know if/when the HD2 will be droid compatible, but I know our Rhodium chefs have been kicking ass in that arena!! We also have some wicked awesome chefs cooking up WinMo roms...I am personally a big fan of the Cell team, but all the chefs here are really awesome and very helpful.
Anyway, again, welcome to xda...and be sure you read and re-read before attempting any modifications.
how could i make the phone run faster? or free up more memory?

...what I do is install "fluff" programs to my sd, also my cache files...I also routinely clean my phone of crap including bad uninstalls/shortcuts, dangling notifications and stuff like that using programs like SK Tools or MemMaid.
