My stock Tilt2 has all of a sudden given me problems with the data connection. It tells me when I try to open apps such as FIM or the Weatherbug app that I don't have a data connection and I need to refresh it. I click refresh and still no luck. The thing is, it shows that MEdia net is connected. I can use the internet without any problems, though. It just seems to be when I run an app that required connectivity that it doesn't work. It also gave the the error when I tried to update the quickGPS function today.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
Any experience this?
I'm sure someone knows what is going on.
I also could not get the Bing app to work right. I could not locate me (even through GPS), therefore could not search for anything nearby. I then downloaded the Google Maps app, and it worked fine! WTF???
Try Settings-Connections-Connection Setup.
That doesn't change a thing......
I don't know what happened. I just tried downloading a new app that also gave me a "failed connection".
Anyone have a clue?

You'll need to search in the forums here for the correct network settings based on what carrier you're with (T-mobile, Sprint, Vodaphone, etc), and go through them and correct whichever of yours have gotten set wrong.

I tried this last night and believe that all my settings are correct. (AT&T)
The internet runs fine using IE or Opera, it only appears to be apps that access the internet, such as the WeatherBug app, FIM, etc. FIM works to see things such as Status updates, etc, but it says "Failed using the internet connectio. Try to restart your data connection" and won't allow me to see who is online on the main page. Everything else thru FIM works fine.
The Weatherbug app gave me a similar error message and would not load any weather data or forecasts.
Here is what I have set, ya'll let me know if things are good.
Start/Settings/Connections/Advanced Network/
I have "Enable HSDPA/HSUPA" selected.
CHAP authentication is selected
CSD Line Type: Data rate 9600 bps(v.32)
Connection element: non-transparent
Start/Settings/Connections/Connections/
Advanced: Network Management:
Programs that automatically connect use: MEdia Net
Programs that connect via Private use: MEdia Net
Under the Wireless Manager, both the "Phone" and "Data Connection" are turned on, everything else is off (and has been since I got the phone. The apps listed above worked this way also before).
I have also gone thru Start/Tools/Proxy Manager/ and done the Restore Proxy as suggested on other threads.
I am at a loss......a Hard Reset is my last resort, as I will have to go through my business to download the Good.com software again to get my work emails going (not that it is a hard thing to do.....)
FYI, I am running the stock AT&T ROM also.
Lastly..... if I did do a hard reset and decided to flash a cooked ROM, could I still run the Good.com Mobile Messaging software for my work email??
Thanks in advance!
I'm on AT&T in Michigan & my GPRS authentication is set "PAP Authentication"
I've tried both with no change in my original problem.

Anyone solve this? I've been having similar problems... WIFI internet sharing lost the relationship to MEdia Net, but Opera and IE work just fine. Now Google Maps won't work, says there's no data network. ANd now, MMS picture messages won't work, says "Proxy Error".
I don't screw with the settings. Ever.
?????
I was having a similar problem with the data side of it. After talking to tech support at AT&T and HTC, no help there, I changed the setting from Enable HSDPA/HSUPA to Enable HSDPA only. Data problem appears to be fixed over 3g anyway. I haven't been using it long enough to say it is ACTUALLY fixed still but it's working at the moment which is more than moments ago.
Related
I have done multiple searches and have not found anything. WIFI works, but gprs will not connect, i've tried disabling proxy and everything. I am currently using schaps 3.60a and the error i get is the answering modem has disconnected to check your connection settings click setting tab. I have not seen this error before. I've flashed multiple 8525's before. I have one working perfectly fine, and this is a second one i followed the exact same steps but gprs will not work no matter what.
I'm suddenly having an identical or almost identical problem on VP3g's ROM. My Wifi connection with PIE works fine and I'm getting push e-mail delivered. But when I try to connect off WiFi as I had always done before, I get the message:
"Cannot connect with the current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap Settings"
I've checked my settings and they seem correct and the same I always used. I've checked to see that my NoData settings were not inadvertently set wrong, but Media Net is Enabled. I've tried flushing temp files and cookies. I even tried erasing them and then reestablishing them by going online with WiFi. Finally I also tried using Opera.
Nothing works. This is maddening
The only thing strange or different is that I had set HTC Custom for temp files to be on my SD Card and when I now tried to set them on main memory (to see if somehow that might work) I get a series of error messages each time and files remain on SD.
Is it possible for the radio for gprs to be corrupt?? Or it could it be something simple as a registry edit? On the phone it is instantaneous when you try to connect to gprs it kicks back that message right away. So i know for sure gprs/edge is inop. Not sure why though.
Check with your operator
It happens to me once in a while even when the "E" shows up in the display indicating Edge abailability, but reality is that the network is down or highly congested.
chhuong I think you are right and it must be a corrupt registry entry. I know that the visible settings are correct.
It occurred to me that I have been using NODATA to turn off GPRS reception whenever I wanted to use Wifi and perhaps one of the times I set it to be disabled and then enabled it again, it must have been left as disabled even though it "says" that it has been re-enabled. Also I had a problem trying to change the cache from Main to SD, and would keep on getting errors whenever I did, using HTCustom. So probably at some point some registry corruption must have crept in. Unfortunately I've become too lazy to open the registry editor and dive in to find out where it might be.
Anyway, I finally got tired of it not working and used the problem as an excuse to move from VPG's 3.60.1 to 3.60.2. I reflashed this morning and it's been fine ever since. This time I won't use NODATA.
well actually i've tried flashing multiple roms and multiple radios, and nothing, still no gprs? So mine might be an internal fault?? Has anyone ever heard of that happening??
have you tried: start - settings - connections -connections - advanced - select networks - Media Net? Reverse it back to my network when you to use WIFI.
I've got similar problem after reflashing. Try to run Shap's Advanced configuration tool, select Connections tab and click Enable HSDPA. Don't ask me why, but it helped me to solve the problem, even there is no HSDPA available here...
I am having the same problem but i dont think its schaps rom, i think it happened either after i installed the 1.54.10 radio or after i installed the shogun cabs. If a moderator or senior could point us in the right directions, it would be much appreciated.

I tired that many times, but it didnt help, thanks anyways.
FWIW, I was able to clear this up the last time it occurred by going in to Menu > Tools > Options > Memory and clearing the History, deleting files and clearing cookies, then soft reset, and everything was okay.
Try this cab http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=54309&d=1192447925, and if it doesnt work try enabling hspda, and if that doesnt work, try calling your provider and ask them to make sure that your account is enabled for data. I tried all that, then, because i dont have a data plan, but i use pay per usage, i went to ATT's site and added a data plan. Now it works, so i think its disabled on ATT's side. GOOD LUCK FELLOW HACKERS
i've tried the connection setup wizard with wm6.1 and everything works (email, text, mms, other outside emails setups) everything except my browsers (PIE and Opera Mobile)
PLEASE HELP this is so frustrating to hear that it works like a charm but not for mine.
i get HTTP ERROR: $CODE$
from both browsers.
i've been told i'm being forced by tmobile to use the total internet 19.99 plan.
wm6.1 was working for a few days i think (i got the rom early on) but then one day i noticed i kept getting that error message (like 2 weeks ago)
Try going into the PIE connections settings and using the WORK connection
still getting same error
i tried changing all ports to 8080 per another thread i saw on here.
i enabled auto configure on the wizard. doesnt make a difference.
should i just suck it up and use the tmobile website to configure my phone? i remember it not working tho cuz i think i would have to confire ALL net access including email (which works just fine)

First off, what package you paying for? Total Internet or VPN Total Internet?
Second off, have you called T-Mobile and have them cancel location? (kick your phone off the tower to get a fresh registration).
Thirdly, If you get that error with out a Internet package (just a tzones) that indicates a network issue and they need to file a trouble ticket.
Have you also tried a master reset? before doing this I would recommend backing up all your info to the sim/storage card or perform a sync with your computer.
I make sure I've got data connected by testing on Google maps and ie, so I know the connection is present. When I goto "Weather Update", it looks to stall at 10%. I set it to "y" for connect to GPRS first. I have re-installed Chome weather and rebooted still no luck. BTW I'm running v 1.9d.

Change the "Y" to an "N" for 'Connect to GPRS first'. Try to update after that. If it doesn't work, then reboot and try to update again.
R U going through a proxy. (ie: using the 5.99 t-zones hack?) i've heard that using the proxy can cause issues with the update. The other thing is, if you are not using a proxy and are using the 19.99 tmobile plan, make sure under gprs settings and whatever you have your data connection named, that it's set to access "the internet"

I am using the 5.99 proxy. Will updates work using this method? if so, how.
I'm going to look into this, but i believe i may have to add a line that specifies the proxy in he weather script.
I think I got it working. Previously, to get the 5.99 to work, I ran "tmotzones.cab" which input the settings for the proxy to work. I think that was my problem...now I removed that app and manually input the proxy settings, so now it looks good. Thanks for the replies.
i have the proxy manually input and it still doesn't update no matter what i do and i've done it all. The only time i can get it to update is via wifi. I can't even get it to work via usb sync only thru wifi. I have the starting 10% and when i press update it says no internet connection? but i have one and the proxy works on ie, live search, etc. any ideas?
try going to www.yahoo.com in IE and see if that works. Let me know if it does or not.
Update seems to be working, but now it looks like the pretty icon has turned to a large red "X".

I had this same problem and posted it on the Chome weather thread:

Glad you got some answers.
I guess I'm still to new to the site.
I am using 5.99 plan, when i insert give me 10% update, when i insert (Y) uppercase worked. 100% . try and post.
Good observation. Works over data for me too when I capitalize the Y.
Thanks for the catch guys, I updated the script to detect that now I never had to use that options myself, since I'm on an "always on" connection. I just made that option available for guys like you, but never had a chance to really test it out on my own
The Facebook app and stocks tab (on TouchFlo3D) on my ATT Tilt2 no longer update except via WiFi (they both update perfectly over WiFi).
The built-in Facebook app seems to login fine. But refreshing info just hourglasses endlessly. I don't think this has ever worked right.
The Stocks tab on the TouchFlo3D Today page also never updates. Just times out with a Connection Error after a minute or so. The Weather tab works fine. Stocks tab worked at one point, but no longer updates.
Is there some kind of proxy thing going on? I've previously disabled the ATT proxy in order to get the YouTube app to work (which works perfectly now). I had to edit the registry to make the change stick, per the instructions on the ATT forum by Vendetta on the following page (near bottom of page 2): http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=cingular&thread.id=123280&view=by_date_ascending&page=2. Disabling the proxy using the built-in CAB worked, but the proxy would be restore after a soft reset. I've poked around the registry a bit for proxy entries which might be causing the above issues, with no luck.
Opera, IE, and everything else I can think of work fine over the wireless data connection.
I've searched around on these forums and Google, and haven't found any significant mention of a similar issue. Any ideas?
Anybody? I know there are a mess of smart people here with some ideas . . .
You could try this:
go to start-settings-connections-connections, advanced on the bottom tab then select networks. Make sure your primary data connection is selected in the first drop down box.

Everything looks in order under the Connections settings, but thanks for the tip.
Strangely, both the Facebook app and the Stocks tab spontaneously started working again today, after not working for 1-2 months. They seem to be working perfectly, and update in a couple seconds. I haven't changed a thing on the phone. So it would appear that perhaps something was happening on ATT's end.
Aghhh. The problem has returned. Again, I haven't changed anything. So something is happening on ATT's end. I've also noticed that the WeatherBug app has the same problem, only updates via WiFi.
Really annoying!
I have the opposite problem... stocks update in seconds and weather gives me "connection error while attempting to download weather data"
Any suggestions? Everything else works fine, internet, email (pushed from hotmail), etc.
Offical confused...this morning everything works fine.
Stocks tab only thru WAP
I have the same issue. Stocks tab not connecting thru wireless internet, only WAP (wireless application protocol). Have to stop current connection and reconnect using WAP setting. However, with WAP weather tab not working. Also in WAP, usual internet web pages cannot load, only web pages meant for mobile phones can load.
Hello,
A few days ago I started receiving a notification saying "Sign in to network" and below that the name of my carrier (see the screenshot). When I click on the notification, the browser opens up but does not load any page and just stays blank. At that time the notification disappears but then appears again after a while.
Has anyone seen this and do you know why it may be appearing? I am fully stock on 4.2 and unrooted.
Thanks!
Does nobody know?
Hi,
Same problem here (with Mtel network operator),
After updating to 4.2.1 the problem still persists. After I click on the notification it asks me to open in a browser and then opens this address for a second 173.194.70.101/generate_204 , and turns into blank page.
I think that when I walk away from one network cell to a another it asks me to sign into the new cell, but I am not really sure..
I`ll keep posting if I find the solution..
Not sure if there is any difference for GSM variants of Gnex, but have you tried updating your PRL & Profile?
(Settings>About Phone>MTel? system updates)
Sometimes after a flash/upgrade until I update my Sprint profile, service seems spottier. Only other thing I can think is that your phone somehow is no longer provisioned with your carrier, shouldn't be the case (I think) when dealing with GSM carriers since your SIM what provisions the phone, but maybe poke around settings to see if there is some sort of self-provisioning option, or call M-tel.
Check your APNs. You might need new/corrected APN settings or something. That usually shows up when you're on a network (usually WiFi) that needs a user/password or accept a disclaimer to get through to the internet.
However on a mobile network the APN should serve as the connection settings and the SIM serves as authentication to the network. Normally you wouldn't be able to connect to mobile internet. Does MMS work?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Hey, guys, thanks for your input. Actually, since yesterday I stopped receiving this notification all of a sudden. I have not done anything in the mean time, so I guess it was something on the carrier's end that got resolved or something.

Hi there. Since this issue disappeared for me without any action on my end, I am assuming that it is related to something on the carrier's end. It may be worth contacting your carrier's support?

Hi there. By trial and error i found out that this icon starts appearing when the carrier throttles your internet speed. For example, I have unlimited internet traffic but when I reach 512 MB of traffic, the internet speed is lowered to 128 kbps. This is when the icon starts appearing for me. I also found out that if you dismiss it, it will appear again if you change connections (e.g. go from wifi to mobile). I find this behaviour annoying but I found no way to prevent it, as it seems to be something on the carrier's side.
I have the same problem only on my android phone (4.2.2) Samsung Galaxy S3 when I am at my home WIFI..
Could it be a virus. only diffference is the IP.. my browser tries to load this: 173.194.35.99/generate_204
i've blocked this IP. I can't even access play store now! rest all things work

i dnt think its caused by virus. Try check ur apn setting. Or reformat ur phone.
When you connect a mobile device with Google Play via WiFi, I have found that I must allow ssl traffic via port 5228. This connection I think is an authorization service deployed by Google. If you trust it or not, when you block outbound port 5228 (or if you block Googles' ip's) you will see the "sign into network" This is because Google Play assumes (poorly) you are connected to a WiFi network which requires a captive portal login (ie Hotel WiFi sign-in page). I am no dev but I believe the "generate_204" thing just forces the mobile browser to open a new tab so the login page will appear. It's not spooky just annoying.
Why did Google choose to deploy ssl over port 5228 and not the standard 443? Not sure, but it might lead to your Firewall's security policy blocking it as it did for mine.
I started getting the same notification on my nexus 5 recently. I had reached my data fair usage allowance and so it started appearing. I noticed that in the data usage setting the warning bar was set to my fair usage limit so I just raised the bar and hey presto no more warnings. Based on this I reckon when your data usage cycle resets each month you'll see the warning disappear until you hit your limit again.
Just done a quick test by dropping the data usage bar back to where it originally was, turned off WiFi and started browsing the web. The warning appeared again.

I have had this issue ever since I got this current phone (not a Samsung, but hear me out). From what I can tell, it is because it can not contact someone (probably Google) via cellular network. I also get this when on a WiFi connection with no internet (or very, very slow), further supporting this.
I am in an interesting situation. My carrier only has 1 APN for both MMS and data combined. However, I only get MMS with my plan, not full data. Therefore, I need to keep data enabled in Android to use MMS. Because of this I get this notification ALL THE TIME.
I'm going to try to get a logcat when it happens and see if I can find the exact service and maybe kill it. I'll update if I figure it out.

I have the same problem. It make notification at the time u linked to mobile data too, and i can't suffer it any more.So i have searched all internet and have no progress. But i found the way to block its notifications rather than voiding generation.
It's a notification generated from "Android System" and seems like a network-check function. So the problem have the mobile carrier's part(I'm in china, you know). And u can't block all notifications of "Android System" using tools like LBE or Gravitybox or anyothers cause it is useful all the time.
This Xposed Mod can help us: NotifyClean, it is the only tool to block several notifications u want of one app.
Use it in ur rooted system with xposed framework, and open it from xposed. It can log all notifications and u can tick the "Sign in to network"s in "Android System".
