Force "roaming only" option on a Verizon touch pro 2 - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Dont get me wrong, Verizon Coverage is unbeatable, but I plan to live in Tijuana Mexico so that I can save some money on rent. The problem is that my phone (and every other phone I had) tries so hard to find verizon signal with no success as obviously there is no vzw towers in Mexico (only partner towers). On the phone menu there is only home only, automatic A, and automatic B. I need a hack so that I can have a "roaming networks only" so that I can freely use my phone without it switching automatically to a 1x one bar or zero bars. How can I do this?? Thank you so much in advance

3G possible with Three Mobile PAYG?

I'm using their PAYG sim which gives a free 150mb allowance for 90 days, but am only ever able to connect via GPRS (my phone says I am roaming as well for some reason). Is anybody else using this sim and able to receive 3G?
yes indeed.
Three don;t have the 3G coverage of the other networks, and so they use Orange as a backup network when you are in an area that does not have any of their own transmitters. Seems you might be in such an area, which is why it says you are roaming cos you're actually on Orange!
Make sure you are not stuck in 2G only mode of course.....
dial *#*#4636#*#*
select phone information
slide down to the bottom, abnd make sure the first menu box is set to WCDMA preferred, and not GSM only.
Thanks for the information, thought this might be the case but wasn't sure. The phone was already set to WCDMA Preferred so I guess GPRS is the best I'm going to get from Three Mobile for the time being.
Thanks also for letting me know how to access the testing screens, lots of good info there!
no probs, here to help.....when i'm in a good mood and not at work of course

Disable/Enable 3G/2G traffic when on different networks?

In Norway I live close to the border to Sweden. I have to roam in my area to a Norwegian Network, because my phone company only have their own network in the big cities here. Before I had an operator the had their own networks in my city.
So when I now roam with the other Norwegian network, I have to disable that "Disable network data when roaming". And sometimes I now get connected to the Swedish network and have to pay 20x times more pr MB.
Is there a way to disable 3G/2G on different networks of my choice?
Hope someone know of something that will help.
Sorry for my English.
Setting-wireless and network-mobile network-dataroming unchecked
Something like this cause mine is in dutch.
Like I said, I have to have it unched cous of my network today is not the default of my operator, so I'm romaing all the time when I use my phone. I want something that can read the operators name and then enable the 2G/3G data connection is it is one of the networks I've accepted. If it's not, then disable the connection.
Cant help you with your roamaing problem, Sorry. But maybe you should consider going back to your old network. If you have no signal at your home you may have the right to cancel your contract.
The clue is that I pay 20£(with use in Norway) until 1.1.2011 to use the phone(sms/mms, calls, MB) as much as I want for only 20£. After 1.1.2011 I'll pay 20£ for 500sms, 500 minutes and 500MB.
But that only works with the operator network and the one they rent(like I use). The one I rent belongs to Telenor, the biggest phone company, as they have the best signal too, I want to stick. But they suck at priceing, so I want to be with my new operator.
But why is it so hard to read the operator name with an app? Than then can enable/disable data connection?
My phone is Desire and it is rooted, running OpenDesire.
Sorry for misunderstanding the first time.
One option you could try is Tasker. I think it has the option to turn data off/on when connected to a certain cell tower. It's not the exact thing you asked for but i don't know any other options.
You have to program it yourself, but just download the app from there site (gives you a 7 day trial) and try it if you can make it work.
Cell Tower, is that the operators ID or the tower itselfe(a operator has many towers)?

[Q] Roaming Controls?

Maybe I'm dumb, but I can't find the roaming control settings. I live in Mexico and cross everyday into the United States.
I need to turn my settings for roaming like this:
Domistic: Data & Voice
International: Only Voice
I also have the Call Guard on because it alerted me if I was "International" Roaming or just "Domestic" Roaming when I was going to answer a call....
I had the Epic 4G and had those controls as does my chick in the Photon.... is it because of having the Nexus? Is there a way or an app to get the settings back?
Thanks!
I'm running CM9 so it might/probably be different.
Go to settings, then hit the menu button (three dots)...there should be an option to click 'Data roaming' and 'Restrict background data'.
Right but it doesn't give the option to block International Roaming while keeping active Domestic Roaming....
That's my problem. Living in the border city, I get some domestic roaming down here and I want that... its just the international roaming that I don't want to access. Every other Android phone i've had has that setting that differentiates.
The phone doesn't tell me when I am roaming domestically or internationally either. Do any custom roms address this?
sorry OP, but i also have a similar question... I'm using CM9 and I'm going to japan and i would like to only use my phone on wifi and disable all data. how would i do this

Unlocked - how can I see all local cell provider signals?

Back in the day, I used to be able to see a list on my AT&T Motorola Razr of all the cell provider signals in my area. For instance, if I were in Pittsburgh, I could see the list of available networks compatible with my phone (the phone would apparently create the list from actually getting signal from those cell towers) and if I felt like it, I could switch to a different provider that had a stronger signal.
Now that my gs3 is unlocked I'm hoping I can find a way to see that same information. For example, the AT&T signal in an area might be terrible, but there could be another provider that will give me "roaming" coverage with a better signal. I would then switch to that roaming coverage voluntarily on the fly.
Anyone know of a way to do this? Under settings / more settings / wireless and networks / mobile networks I find "network operators". Currently only "default setup" is listed there. But this is where I'd expect to see other network signals that my phone is getting.

Question How to change preferred network type?

I'm on EE UK but the preferred network type setting doesn't appear to be present in SIM options?
It appears that some providers suck hard and don't want to allow you to switch networks. That's not a phone thing-y, it's a provider thing-y. Which means that your phone will of course still change networks, but only if the "higher" one is not available, ergo your phone will only connect to 4G, if 5G is not available - if the 5G connection is bad, that will probably cause problems for you, because your phone will probably not want to connect to 4G automatically.
I can easily switch preferred network types
Settings -> Network & Speed -> SIMs -> (scroll down, between 4G Calling & Carrier settings version) -> Preferred network type (5G, 4G, 3G, 2G).
It that's not available, your network carrier sucks. No more to say here.
I'd suggest you either switch providers, or contact your provider to see if they are willing to change this. It's definitely on their end, cuz people like me can change the settings easily.

You may be able to change preferred network type with *#*#4636#*#* dialer code.

EE (& BT Mobile) hide the menu.

Or you could just make sure Adaptive Connectivity is enabled and not worry about it.
You would have to drag me away from EE (BT Mobile) screaming and kicking given the coverage and speeds they have, to say they suck over one menu option missing is absolutely laughable.

When the Note 20 first came out a lot of carriers wouldn't let you change network type but there's an app in the play store that was working on the notes.
Force 4G/5G Only - Apps on Google Play
Lock your phone to 4G/5G mode or VoLTE network
play.google.com

Crashes or alternately just disappeared for me when I click on the first option "4G LTE with only one SIM". Reported the crash. Thanks, though. Maybe they'll update it.
An alternative to the dialer code is to boot into safe mode, and the preferred network type setting will appear in: Settings -> Network & internet -> SIMs between Data warning & limit and Carrier settings version (at least it does on my Google Fi Pixel 6 Pro).
