hey guys!!
i had my hero for the first time this week and i heard about a new firmware so im going to to tell what i did exactly!!
1- i erased every thing on my sdcard
2- i turned off my htc hero and went in recovery by pressing home+power
3- i downloaded this rom from this site
http://htcpedia.com/hero_community_release_no_wipe_98057c7bc94393469/soft/htc-hero-rom.html
4- i pressed wipe data/factory setting reset
5- i pressed apply sdcard:update.zip and this came out:
--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:No signature (832)
E:Verification failed
Installation aborted
That's it nothing else ive done !! so please friends help i had the phone for three days only and cant do anything!!
i dont know whats root and whats flashing whats everything what i did is what i told u!!
help me!!
here we go...
1. this is the development section. please think before you post, and select the correct section.
2. if you only wiped your data you should still be able to use the stock android that was on the phone when it was delivered. try turning it on and see what happens.
3. if you opened and altered the zip file that is your problem. don't do that, the file is signed after it is created, and needs to be resigned if the content was changed.
4. try downloading it again, might also be a faulty download.
5. if you have no clue what you were doing (and probably neither know why you wanted to do it), have you thought about finding out first? would you just rip some pieces out of your cars engine because someone in a forum told you to?
edit: Ninja-d by kendong, probably better advice also
thanks very much my friend for fast reply ill try both ways!!

ok, here is how it works: we won't help you if you don't take at least the effort to phrase a question and use some punctuation marks. and don't come with "sorry my english is not so good", every western language uses a dot at the end of the sentence.
what exactly is your problem now? you can turn your phone on and make calls, this is what i get from what you wrote. this would mean that your android boots up and is most probably fully functional. so i am sorry to be that rough, but as long as you don't manage to phrase a single sentence in something that comes even close to english nobody will be able to help you.
and about the wrong thread idea: this is not the wrong forum. it is just the wrong SUBFORUM. as you (tried to) phrase a question it should go into the Q&A subforum, see here. and removing the thread after solving the problem is not the idea of it, next week somebody with a similar problem will ask the same stuff again. will do anyway, but then we don't need to type the answers again, we can just link to this thread.
ok, kendog2!!
What I did now is that I downloaded this rom: (HTC Generic 2.73.405.38 - download)
from this site:
*is there a special rom that i should choose for my hero?
and I put it in my sdcard, and renamed it to "update.zip"
and I went recover mode wher there is only 3 options
I pressed (wipe) and than (apply update).
This came out again:
--------------------------
--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:No signature (832)
E:Verification failed
Installation aborted
---------------------------
note: When I downloaded the rom i opened it!!
Does this do anything??
as long as you don't modify and then save the file it *should* not matter. but this points out to a faulty file anyway, so here is what you do:
download it again, do NOT open it (i don't know which tool you are using and what it does), copy to sdcard and apply. then report back.
download this rom an do it again like the way you have done it before
1. download this rom : http://www.romraid.com/paul/hero/update-hero-generic-2.73.405.5-signed.zip
2. rename it to update.zip an put it on your sd card
3. put the sd card in your hero and push the home button while booting
4. and if you are in the recovery menu first wipe all data and then choose the option (the first with ....blabla..update.zip)
5. wait until it installed the new rom and then restart your hero
sry for my bad english im from germany
You need a recovery image that will allow update.zip files signed with test keys.
Read through the Amon_Ra Hero Recovery thread to learn how to get it installed.

one assumes that you have already rooted your HTC Hero ?
If not then follow this
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-root-your-htc-hero-in-one-click/
once that is done then follow this

This worked like a charm for me so I assume that it should work for you as well
Hope this helps

Where, China? I've heard it called the G2 by virtue of T-Mobile branding it the G2 Touch, but never the G3!

I have this model also, just wondering when we are able to root the hero and install different roms will it enable different android market? I'm in the US and am lacking apps that should be present e.g Pandora, ebuddy etc.
I was wondering if this way of force updating would work?
download the official rom version 1.76.405.x firmware (not rooted),
boot up the unit using home+power (to boot into recovery);
extract the official rom's rom.zip and rename into update.zip
put that update.zip into sdcard's root
on the device, apply the update in the recovery.

try it, but i doubt it will work because it will check the CID in the rom.zip(or renamed to update.zip) file and that ROM does not contain CID's needed for most phones.

uhm, could be, or it doesn't like the rom.zip (altough renamed to update.zip) zip file, which makes sence as we can create update.zip files and sign them ourselfs (stuff that for example paul (modaco) does) i need more playing time myself, but you can try and creating a new zip with the contents of the rom.zip and sign it, then look if that works....but i'm doubtful
funny thing is, i've downloaded the signed rom from modaco, (they are signed, as far as i can be told by the file name), and tried to flash it again using the same method:
log:
Code:

Finding update package...

E:No signature (740 files)
E:Verification failed

still no go.
does renaming a file affect the signature?

no, but the type of signing is the problem, the update.zip (with cert/sign files inside the zip) is a different kind then doing an edit on the physical zip file and changing (signing) and thats whats being checked and we currently can't duplicate (or re-sign a changed rom.zip)
I found a solution after being told it was not possible.
The Brown Hero I purchased was also an Asian version and had no Market.
I was so scared and frustrated at first because everyone said there was no solution.
But I found one!
*1. Download Linda file manager from here and install since you don't have the market! (I had a copy already on my sdcard) goto Settings, Applications, and make sure Unknown source is checked ON.
*2. On your phone, goto Settings, SD card and phone storage, and click Unmount SD card.
*3. Then click Format SD card (it should automatically remount after this)
*4. Plug the phone into the compuer via USB, then pull down the notification bar and click on the SD card notification. Then click mount.
*5 Download the Flashrec apk from this link: http://zenthought.org/system/files/asset/2/flashrec-1.1.2-20090909.apk and install using Linda File manager.
*6. Download Amon_RA_Herov1.2.2 Recovery image and place on root of sdcard
*7. Open the FlashRec program and click on Backup Recovery Image and wait for it to finish.
*8. Once done, click on the empty text box in the FlashRec program and type
/sdcard/Recovery-RA-HERO-v1.2.2.img
Then click on the Flash Custom RecoveryImage button and wait for it to finish.
*9. Turn off the phone and turn it on into Recovery mode by holding down Home and Power to turn it on (keep holding until the recovery screen comes up has a bunch of text on a black background). So long as that screen comes up, you have done it correctly and now you can load this rom which is HTC Generic 2.73.405.5
It's also referred to as Modaco version 2.2, it's what I'm currently using.
*10. Place that rom on the root of you're sdcard and use option Apply sdcard: choose zip option and flash! Once done reboot and you're all set and will have The Android Market and all the goodness that rooting provides!
Hope this helps!
You had the same ROM version as mentioned in the original post? ^^

My version was a little different but it was an Asian version and did not come with the Android Market installed and had SlideMe market instead.
Here is a screen shot:
i have tried the method u suggested but to no avail. ya, your version of hero is slightly different from mine.
Editing this to provide info for those who were in my boat.
I did not plan to try to root, given the ton of threads on how impossible it is, but I figured I would at least follow the 10 minute video and see if I could get into recovery. In the 10 minute video, he gets in, but shows a second way for those who dont. It turned out, what he did, I did; and his second try was my second and final try. Once in I figured the hard part was behind me, and went to put in the update.zip. Since 99.999% of the threads discuss how to get into recovery, there was no information on what happened to me; so hopefully this thread can stand for those who run into what I did.
Basically, I couldn't get the timing right, and I would either get a verification failed (no worries), or a LONG list of things which looked like they were a success. The readout was:
Finding update package ...
opening update package ...
verifying update package ...
installing update ...
verifying current system ...
unpacking patches ...
removing unneeded files ...
patching system files ...
symlinks and permissions ...
BUT what I never got was "unrEVOked". So I tried a few more times, and got that list again BUT with
e:multiple firmware images
e: can't store zip image
installation aborted
If this happens to you, it simply means you are pushing the update too early. Ignore all the instructions about waiting 1/2 second or 1 second or all that. Just wait until your phone says "verifying" with a green bar, and push out the update. You will get the unrEVOked message.
I hope this can help someone out there.

ok i downloaded the update for 2.2 but i can not get it to load.
i have put it on the sd card and then tried to update from that. but its a no go.
then i renamed the file to update.zip and tried another time and still no go.
so if some one could let me know how to get this thing updated.
are you getting this?

add h to the front of the link.
im getting this am im clueless.
I downloaded it using the link directly from HTC, you need to be on a stock 1.47 (I did a reinstall of 1.47 from the HTC ruu, so it was a clean install), copy the update to your sd card and name it update.zip, power off, turn on by pressing power and vol up, select bootloader, then select recovery, once you are at the htc phone with red exclamation mark screen press power and vol up, select apply sdcard: update.zip, it will start scanning the file, then it will prompt to reboot, it will reboot to a green circle with an arrow and begin the installation. Those are the steps I followed and mine updated to 2.2 successfully.
no i downloaded it from Engadget on my phone and then copied it to the computer for safe keeping. but then cleared all storage as well and then added it back on there. on the sd and it will not load.
it just keeps saying that not the right file.
i followed all the instructions to the T.
FYI im unrevoked. Shouldnt matter.
Ok and what were those another time bc i did not see any other then the download.
hey thanks i for got i was on 1.32 still but with up date 1 so i guess that is the issue then. will check it out and see. thanks
Android police has a mirror for the update. HTC has delete the link form their site. I am just letting you guys know how I did it. My phone was not rooted. All stock, from original release to 1.47 update and now this 3.26 update (froyo 2.2).
Anyone else think i gotta get rid of unrevoked off my evo, go to the previous RUU and then update?

Probably so if you want to try 2.2. Also, engadget has a statement from HTC regarding this update:
Update: HTC just shot us a message to clarify that this is not the final ROM version and that the company is strongly recommending not to install this. Additionally, a request has been put in to remove the file from the server, so if you still want to try at your own risk, better download now while it's still available.
Update 2: ... and now it's gone. We're sure crafty internet users can still find the file lingering elsewhere, but you won't be getting it from HTC's servers this weekend. You know the old saying, ye who snoozes, something something, tough luck.
Its running fine for me, so I we will have to see on 8/1 what the ota version will be.

I wasn't saying not to do it, in fact I am trying to help, I did mine successfully. I was just posting HTC's response as to why they removed the file from their servers. They say it isn't the final Froyo 2.2 update.
that i did. and i even tried just leaving it the way was downloaded. and still it does the same. that is the reason maybe i need to redownload it. any links to a download.
I don't have rights to post links, sorry
Edit: guess I do, lol
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/07/30/breaking-htc-releases-android-2-2-froyo-ota-for-evo4g-download/
Also, even though HTC is saying this isn't the final update, it has the build number sprint posted, 3.26.651.3, so not sure what else is missing.
I guess its buried deep under and that I will have to turn a lot of rocks to find a answer to this from the forum. I am getting random results on searching. Nothing on wildfire specifically.
I want to know how I can install an OTA update manually on Wildfire. I don't want root.
I have the OTA.xxx.zip file from "Shipped_ROMS" website and I want to do a manual install.
I have figured out this much. I have to rename the file something like "PG05IMG.zip"(for hTC Hero that is) and put in SD card. Start into HBoot by key combination.
And then ? (Should I got to "Recovery", what can I expect next ?)
What should I rename the zip file as ? (Very important)

Firstly make sure of that u don't want root anymore.
And are u asking the thing for htc hero or for wildfire. Im giving the process for wildfire. I dont know about this thing in hero.
First rename the OTA update zip file to "update.zip" and put it in the root of the memory card. Then reboot the phone into hboot menu and then select recovery. Then u will see a red triangle. Now press volume up + power key. Then u will go to the recovery menu. There u will have the option to install the sd card update.zip . just do it and then reboot the phone. Thats all.
NOTE: If u modify the contents of that zip file, then htc signature will be lost and installation will be cancelled with an error. And donot do the process with low battery.
edit: Told u that thinking ur phone was not a rooted one.
Hi!!
Some people have been asking this question however, I am unable to fix the problem.
I need to return my phone for warranty because my volume buttons no longer work, so I am trying to bring it back to stock.
I am following The Complete Guide 2 Return Rooted Phone Back 2 Stock for Vodafone Australia Warranty by Yoshi.
I am currently at this step....
INSTALL STOCK VODAFONE (AU) ROM
Follow this link to download Kazuroka's Vodafone Australia Stock Branded ROM 1.32.178.5 http :// depositfiles.com/files/ 3x1c6v6hj
Create a folder on you micro SD card such as "stockrom" as follows: "/clockworkmod/backup/stockrom/" then copy the zip file there. Enter bootloader as described above. Choose recovery, then wipe/factory reset, choose backup/restore, then restore and select the zip file from the folder you just copied to your MicroSD card. After everything is done it will ask you to reboot. If so some reason when you select the option at the end to reboot and you just get a blank screen, wait for a while and be absolutely sure your phone your phone won't turn on then just remove and replace battery and then turn on.
This sounds easy enough, however upon downloading Kazuroka's stock rom and then following the steps above, in recovery it won't restore the zip file because it says 'md5 mistmatch'
These are the solutions I found on the forums and have tried...
1. extracting Kazuroka zip into the stockrom folder on the sd card and in recovery run from there - this did not work
2. Extract the contents of the zip into /clockworkmod/backup/stockrom/.
Then delete the nandroid.md5 file.
Then use md5sum to recreate it like this:
md5sum *img > nandroid.md5
- unfortunately I do not know how to recreate it
3. redownload the file because it may be a transfer error - I have done this and it still says a md5 mismatch
I have been searching for 5 hours for the answer. Please! If anyone can direct me to the thread with the solution, or anything that could help me that would be lovely!
Any help is much appreciated!!
Thank you !!!!
-MATE! I'm am having this exact same problem, as I need to return my phone for the exact same volume rocker issue. I'm not getting any answers unfortunately.
I've followed all the same suggestions as use, and don't know how to recreate the nandroid.md5.
I've tried creating a new file nandroid.md5\ 'value of the md5'*img, just changed to error to 'no md5 .' so I don't really know at this point, but will post the solution if/when I find one. If you do, please post it on this thread of pm me. Thanks for posting this, I was close to doing so myself.
I found this download from a google search http://www.multiupload.com/D42QL68GYX it is a WWE but in the page to that link it had this name HTC Desire HD - Vodafone 1.32.405.3 RUU. Apparently it doesn't have the vodafone splash screen nor bloatware but since RUUs are official releases it should not void your warranty, I sent my inspire 4g to warranty with a WWE RUU and AT&T simply replaced it with theirs after fixing my phone.
I dont know how Vodafone will act but it will probably be ok also check:
