for some reason all my msn messenger contacts were copied to my phone contacts, and its real annoying! anybody know how to take them off?
also, when i dial a number, and then press save, then new contact, it only gives me 2 choices: outlook contact or windows live
wth?? i just want to save this number on my phone.... how would i go about doing that?? thanks
omar
Hey Omar,
Welcome to WM6 . When you want to save a contact like that, just make it an outlook contact, that's the option you want to use. As for having your Messenger contacts merged with your regular ones, I like that feature about as much as you do. Once you sign into messenger your messenger contacts are copied down and merged with the rest. I don't really have a solution, just wanted to explain why it's doing what its doing.... it's a feature of WM6.
Bump.
Have the same issue and seeing if anyone has found a reg entry that this can be disabled.
Annoys the hell out of me. I have 150 msn messenger contacts and hate having them in my contacts on my phone. I think its really stupid for Microsoft to force us have them in there, i wish they'd give us a choice to add or not. Blahh
i use web version of msn messenger now.
http://mobile.live.com/GoLive/ got here for more info
This really sucks!!! Yesterday I updated to WM6 and now I'm really pissed off. There is no way to get back before synch? mmmmg

They DO give you an option, last I remember. And I'm pretty sure this was part of WM5 too. When you first use Messenger, I believe it asks you if you wish to merge the two items. I find it a little annoying (I end up with multiple listings for people, IE: Phil vs. Phillip), and I agree, there ought to be a way to disable it.

Look at the "Updated Windows Live Messenger (Messenger Contacts Adding to Phone Book Fix)" part in the 1st post, that's the file you need to disable automated MSN contact book update.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
Firstly i'm new to these forums and the exciting concept of flashing ROMs, so hello! I feel like a giddy child.
I've noticed that WinMo 6.5 (and Android) give you the option to link your contacts to Facebook accounts, unfortunately i discovered that for alot of people i know, when associating Facebook accounts through your address book, profile pictures don't all load up in the look-up. This means they can't always be used as Caller images for your contacts.
Currently i'm accessing this featuring by going into edit contact details and clicking the 'Link, Associate with Facebook account' button at the bottom.
Anybody had the same problem or have a work around? Its a very useful feature and something which i was looking forward to using. Maybe there's a method to link facebook accounts en masse?

Facebook integration depends on which manila you're using. 2.5 vs 2.1 act differently when it comes to facebook. 2.5 lets you sync all the contacts at once but doesn't set the picture as the default profile pic so you have to go back and set it (also, it only sets it in manila not wm). 2.1 doesn't have mass sync but automatically sets the picture as your default profile pic.
SocialSync 0.1
Imports (one-way synchonization) your Facebook contacts to your Pocket Outlook.
Supports the following sync mappings:
* Facebook super-sized profile pic --> Outlook Picture
* Facebook Full Name --> Outlook's FileAs, FirstName, MiddleName, LastName
* Facebook Profile URL --> Outlook GovernmentID
* Facebook Relationship Status --> Outlook Spouse
* Facebook Birthday --> Outlook Birthday
* Adds "facebook" to Outlook Categories
* Facebook Status --> Outlook JobTitle
* Facebook Personal Website --> Outlook Website URL (only first one since Outlook only supports 1 URL)
* Facebook Email (image representation) --> Outlook Email
Supported on:
WM2003, WM5, WM6, WM6.5, WM6.5.3
QVGA (240x320) Portrait (want more formats? donate!)
.NET Compact Framework 3.5
To-do:
* Scheduled imports
* Allow skipping importing Facebook Status (saves a http hit)
* Phone numbers! lol. nightmare formatting, some are 004412344.. some are +4412344.. some are 012344.. some are 4412344
DISCLAIMER: This is an unofficial app (lowercase 'a' for app because it's NOT a 'Facebook Application'). It is unofficial because I have not signed a ToS with Facebook. This application is for EDUCATIONAL-USES only. It is recommended you do not use this. Using this MAY breech your User agreement with Facebook, which means your personal account may be suspended, deleted, blocked, or banned. You have been warned.
the welcome screen contains a menu. the menu can launch the email input screen, which is where you manually type the email contained in an image. it can also force a manual sync, once the wizard was completed at least once before.
enter your facebook email and password here. click next to save login details to device.
socialsync will now fetch your friends list, so this takes about 8 http requests per 100 friends.
now you can link facebook friends (on the left) with pocket outlook contacts (on the right).
this is where you can import facebook friends that does not have a corresponding outlook contact already.
your sync profile has been saved and is ready to do an initial sync.
this is the actual sync process. it takes 4 http requests per contact to get their information.

oops, didn't know that Sense can do this, which version?
but yeah, mine does more then.. it can bring down new facebook friends and create new contacts on phone, but also their email address, date of birth, address, contact pic --> outlook pic, IM addresses, etc
I would love this, but the reason we haven't had this so far is that it violates Facebooks TOS and gets people banned for doing this. Will this not be a problem?

I would love this too and it would be a shame if it did violate the TOS - I can't see how it can? - my Facebook friends update their individual privacy policies to allow me to view the information they wish. As far as I can see that's all the app is fetching?
Please do continue this project if you can, even if Sense does already have this functionality - I don't have sense (the ui!)! Doesn't SPB Mobile Shell do this too?
The way I see it, is this is just a custom User-Agent. If Facebook want to go round "banning" people for using a non-normal browser, then it's not a site I'd like to use.
I imagine people will be syncing once a day or once a week.. I've been syncing like every 5 minutes for a week with no problem using my own account. I'll let you all know if I ever get "banned".
I'll add a disclaimer to first post, but brandall got it on the head; this is all information shared and authorised for by your friends.. this app just saves you having to click each profile by hand and eye to manually update your phone. It's also a bit like any HTTP cache/proxy or FasterFox.
Plus, in theory, how could they ever tell? I haven't done a byte-by-byte comparison, but I do things like Referrer tracking, cookies, random delays.. for all they know it's a scriptlet running in firefox.. and even if they deployed javascript obfuscation, this sync could just run an IE session in a hidden window and use DOM to access the data..
I like this app a lot and look forward to its release.
I also look forward to it. Been looking for something like this for a long time. Any chance it will be wvga as well?
Facebook doesn't allow any application that can access personal details other than Names and Birthdays. Phone numbers, addresses, etc are all off limits. If you account is running any app that access that stuff you can be banned. It's happened many times in the past. Just look up "Facebook sync to Outlook" or a derivitave of that.
If this app has a way around that, then sweet.
Great!
Finally a Facebook Sync! Thank you so much

First version posted to first post!
It's not .cab yet, no idea how to make .cabs..
just unzip to \program files\SocialSync\ or somewhere and run
Thanks! It feels a bit rough on the edges, but does work well!
Is it possible to choose what data to sync? For some friends, I prefer not to have their profile pictures sync'ed.

not yet, can't think how to present per-user selective importing on a 3-inch user interface
what is the most annoying rough-edge? i would like to polish that.
donations welcomed (for my personal efforts on this forum; not specifically this app)
very nice!! although i spent 1 hour linking my facebook account to outlook it is still a nice idea...
few suggestions:
1- option for exporting link information in case i need to redo all that after a room upgrade
2- also like previous comments, the name boxes are small so if i have 3 guys named Mohammad i do not know which one is which...
3- easier search in outlook contacts by allowing to type names instead of searching in a big contacts list
thank you for your effort, you are really achieving something here, although it is only for educactional purposes only
wow, why did it take an hour? i did put randomised delays inbetween requests, but they are quite low (0.1-1.5 secs).
1. to backup partnership database, just back up your outlook/pimstore.. the partnership exists because the GovernmentID field is filled in with a facebook profile url. this is the key to breaking sync relationships with a contact.
the file on device friends.dat is just a cache of friends, it can be lost with no problem.
2. i struggled to find a decent gui toolkit to use for this app. microsoft made an iphone GUI clone but it's too complex to digest (no design-time support, no docs, no support).. but in March we should all see Compact Silverlight Beta, maybe that can help. basically I use a ListBox which doesnt support left/right scrolling. maybe i'll try a ListView if that exists in CF..
3. i could maybe do that. what part of my auto-guess feature doesn't help you properly? on my phone it's a snap to find someone - it jumps to the closest named contact whenever i select a new fb friend on the left..
I have a question, which now puzzles me.
I have a spare TP2 I use for testing various things, but I did something which kinda has puzzled me. I sync-ed my spare with my computer and all the contacts transferred over, all well and good, when I went to check them, I noticed they all have pictures, just as it does in outlook. I purposely had made a folder on my TP2 I use everyday named Contacts to put their pix in their, but the spare doesnt have this folder, so I'm wondering where is this pix being stored cause the Album doesnt show me. Is this embedded in the contact info?
Have a look in the Notes field when viewing Contacts in the native WinMo application.
It's the sort of coding you might do when first programming and self taught. It is not what you would expect to see on a Smartphone in 2010. People need to realise that HTC are not a software house, they are essentially an assembler of electronic components.
I did not give them permission to corrupt my Contacts, so why have they done it?
the picture is embedded in the contact info
HTC does add extra info to the contact notes for information that outlook doesnt have a field for, like if you set it as a favorite on the contact tab it will save the action you assign to it, and it will also store facebook info info there too if you have the contact linked to a facebook account
it has nothing to do with HTC taking shortcuts or anything like that, its how they add information that outlook doesnt support while still maintaining outlook compatibility, HTC could create an entirely separate database if they wanted, but then contacts wouldnt sync with outlook
if you dont want that information then dont use HTC sense, or at the very least, dont use the contacts tab or link facebook accounts (theres probably more but thats all i have in my notes fields)
So in short, I can just get rid of the contacts folder after it sync with outlook? Well thats good to know, that will save space on my SD Card. I had a feeling it got embedded once it sync-ed with Outlook, but just wanted to be sure.
When I go into Accounts & Sync in the settings menu and try to add Facebook as an account, it doesn't work. I click to add facebook but it just returns me to the settings and never adds it. It works perfect for Twitter, LinkedIn, and other apps as well. Anyone else having this happen too? I've tried uninstalling and clearing all data, didn't work.

Same here. Don't think its setup for ICS yet
Facebook has not made an app that actually works with Android. Many companies, like HTC, have made apps for that by themselves. Facebook and Google are not on friendly terms when it comes to sharing contacts data, so this might not change anytime soon.
Doesn't that make the People Hub pointless then? All of my "real" friends are on Facebook, not Google+, Twitter, or LinkedIn so it doesn't sync any real info or high def pictures.

That's not entirely true. Facebook sync used to work with all Nexus devices but Google themselves pulled the sync due to them not allowing contacts to also be exported to Android devices. From Google:
http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/22/google-android-facebook-contacts/
“We believe it is very important that users are able to control their data. So in the over-the-air update for Nexus S, we have a small change to how Facebook contacts appear on the device. For Nexus S users who downloaded the Facebook app from Android Market, Facebook contacts will no longer appear to be integrated with the Android Contacts app. Since Facebook contacts cannot be exported from the device, the appearance of integration created a false sense of data portability. Facebook contact data will continue to appear within the Facebook app. Like all developers on Android, Facebook is free to use the Android contacts API to truly integrate contacts on the device, which would allow users to have more control over their data. We are removing the special-case handling of Facebook contacts on Nexus S and future lead devices. We continue to believe that reciprocity (the expectation that if information can be imported into a service it should be able to be exported) is an important step toward creating a world of true data liberation — and encourage other websites and app developers to allow users to export their contacts as well.”
They only stopped this feature on the Nexus line of phones and the reason Facebook sync still doesn't work is because Facebook has not made the necessary change yet that Twitter and the like have. Google however doesn't stop other OEMs from allowing Facebook to sync contacts though - I wish they would to light the fire under their ***** so I could get my contact photos back, but what can you do? They hate each other right now.

You could always start spamming Facebook to allow contact export so Google will let them sync again. I doubt they'll do it though.
The fact that any OEM can make this feature work again no matter what Google does kind of sucks when you only buy Nexus phones. I've gotten used to it not being there and I take a random candid picture of everyone I add to my contacts list now which works better in some situations since some of those FB profile pics don't give you any idea who the person actually is.

No they did not. The way Facebook synced before was a hack, they did not use Android contacts API the way others do and the way it is meant to. Google removed the hack.
Facebook does not want to share contact information with Android so that user 'owns' their data. They can always build their app the right way. Zuckerberg & Co just don't want to.

because it is called the People application, not the Facebook application.
Not everyone uses Facebook, as apathetically ubiquitous it may appear to be. Some people use Twitter. Some people use Google+. Either way, the point of it is that it links with multiple social networks. The Facebook application does not work properly with Android 4.0, and even if/when it does it is unlikely that Facebook will be allowed API access to the People application due to the fact that they do not make it simple to get at your contacts data. It's your prerogative if you want to blame Google or Facebook there, but the point I'm making is that the People application obviously has a point, since Facebook isn't the be-all-and-end-all of social networking.
So if i understand this right.
Google wont let facebook info sync. Because facebook wont let it fully sync and be backed up to gmail etc?
And this would mean all your friends facebook info would then be your property and not theirs (facebooks).

Google cannot stop anyone from syncing and using the API, this is open software. Facebook simply does not wish to implement that feature, since all contact data synced is accessible by other applications. The other thing is that Facebook does not wish to share friends email addresses.
It is entirely about Facebook not allowing user to do whatever they want with data shared with them by friends.
Basically, Facebook is afraid that if they allow people to export contact data, it will be very easy for everyone to just move all their friends to a new social network. Since Facebook only has one way of making money it's understandable that they want to make it as hard for us as possible to do that.
From Google's point of view, it's very exploitative of Facebook to expect to get special treatment on Android phones even though they refuse to play ball with Google, hence why their special privilege has now been removed.
Whose ever fault you think this is, it's us consumers who are made to suffer. -.-

Not backed up to GMail but backed up to the phone. If you delete your FB account and I only had you as a FB contact then you would completely disappear from my contact list, or if something happened and FB went down for a few hours or a few days I wouldn't be able to contact anyone who was synced only through FB. Most people only join existing contacts so they only suffer from not having the photo and status updates synced, but not allowing export could be much more problematic. It's not that it's your property, it's information you have access to that you have been given approval by those you have friended to have therefore you could just use what FB gives you and manually enter the contact yourself if you wanted to. Google is basically saying if that's the case you should be given the option to automatically export that entire list to your phone instead of having to manually enter all the information that FB is supplying you with.
This frustrates me also.. ever since they updted my nexus s and removed it. Its the only thing i will miss from htc sense. I know use contapps to sync facebook and its associatd contact photos
