Hi all,
I am trying to tweak my Hero to use a proxy when connected to a wifi network.
Here is the information I've got so far.
- For a simulator, inserting a record named 'http_proxy' works. But for a product it does not.
- WebKit reads the environment variable 'http_proxy' as its proxy url. [external/webkit/WebKit/qt/QtLauncher/main.cpp:91]
- Running 'export http_proxy="<ip>:<port>"' before starting the browser does not work.
What I am not sure about is:
I don't know if it is because the QtLauncher has already be invoked before I set the env var that the 'export' command does not work.
But is the QtLauncher not the code to initialize the GUI of the browser? Its name suggests to be.
Any way, now I am going to try:
The busybox, which is said to be giving the possibility of using a .profile file.
Anyone any opinions or suggestions?
Is anyone familiar with the WebKit QtLauncher and would like to offer some help?
Thanks!
Ive found the net.gprs.http-proxy variable, maybe it works if u replace net.gprs with net.tiwlan0
"setprop net.gprs.http-proxy http://proxy:8080/"
It seems you are looking at the raw webkit source.
GtkLauncher and QtLauncher are 'demo' applications to test the WebKit build, it's not the browser itself.
You got to take a look at the source of the _Android_ browser (based on WebKit, but something else still) to see how it handles http-proxies.
that net.gprs.http-proxy is (I guess) more a WAP / 3G / APN setting than a real http-proxy to use in a browser like you're trying to do.
I found a very good article last night:
http://www.yuan.se/?p=32
Though it is a little bit old fashioned, it is very helpful.
According to the author, the system does a check of the current network type before setting the proxy. The proxy setting is only applied when the network type is not WIFI.
In other words, the system does look into the database for the proxy url setting, but only when the network.
So, to use proxy in WIFI network, we have to modify the code and recompile.
The wish of enabling proxy by an application or by simply inserting a record to the db will only be a wish...
And, the net.gprs.http-proxy is actually not only for mobile network to use.
It is used when the system is not able to read a proxy setting from the database.
Now I need to learn the compiling knowledge...

I was having issues with my MEdia Net on AT&T. Every so often I would get the message that "The remote party has ended this connection" and when I would try to edit the MEdia Net settings to make sure they were good I would see "The connection is pre-configured. It cannot be modified."
It turns out that settings \\HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Destinations\MEdia Net\ReadOnly to 0 allows editing of the connection and then removing the username and password that are specified for the MEdia Net connection makes the connection more stable.
I wanted to put the solution I found in one concise place as I had to dig around quite a bit to find this answer.
In case you want to add back in the username and password for some reason they are [email protected] and CINGULAR1. See http://208.74.204.154/t5/forums/for...age-id/53168/print-single-message/true/page/1 for more information.
I have also included a CAB that will turn off the read only setting for MEdia Net in case you won't want to have to mess with the registry. I hope this helps someone.
UPDATE: I also found that my settings kept setting to ims.cingular randomly for an unknown reason, which of course breaks my connection. I could reset my phone to get it back to wap.cingular, but that is a pain. I therefore deleted all the other connections on my phone using the Connections applet in Settings. Under the Advanced tab you can choose Select Networks, then Edit every network in the list except for MEdia Net and delete it from the General tab. Then just make sure that both the Internet and Private Network settings are set to MEdia Net and you should be good.
UPDATE 2: The problem of my settings reverting back to ims.cingular continues to happen randomly. I searched my registry for any instances of ims.cingular and found one at HCLM\Software\HTC\SUPL AGPS\APN which I changed to wap.cingular and updated the CAB file below to make that change as well.
UPDATE 3: The problem continued. When seems to have fixed it for good was to delete the MEdia Net settings and then to add the settings to My ISP. The only thing that needs to be set is an access point name of wap.cingular. There is no username and password. That change has worked for over a week for me now. You'll still need the cab below to unlock MEdia Net so you can delete it.
UPDATE 4: The problem still came back. The latest thing I tried was to change the name of the connection to Cingular instead of the standard MEdia Net. That seems to have worked for a few weeks now. I also made the same change to my wife's phone and that seems to be better as well. The attached CAB will make the connection editable and then you can rename it on your own.
THANKYOU!
You saved my butt on this one. I was helping an end user of ours on a HTC Tilt 2. The AT&T Tech's insisted that troubleshooting this problem was going through and clearing out the cookies, cache, and history inside the Opera Browser.
What a total crock of .... I kept explaining to her that it's the DATA CONNECTION not THE FRIGGIN INTERNET BROWSER.
Anyways, simply running the attached cab to allow me to edit the media net settings let me correct the ims.cingular setting which solved the entire problem right away.
After clearing those 3 settings in Opera both techs insisted that to fix it I had to do a hard reset. I was furious. I knew they were taking the easy way out of it and I wasn't about to tell this guy that is billed out at over $300 an hour that AT&T was too lazy to properly fix the problem so we just had to reset the entire phone and all your stuff is lost.
Today, I finally tried a proxy server as part of my tethering testing and it seems to have finally unlocked the 4G tether speeds over WiFi. It's certainly not a perfect solution for all situations, but I thought I'd put something here in the general section where some Sense users would be more likely to run across it.
Could someone try this under Sense with 4G over WiFi and let me know if it improves your speeds? I went from being stuck at 0.4Mbps to getting the usual 4G speeds I normally see (anywhere from 2.2Mbps to 10Mbps)!
What you'll need to do is install filterproxy from the Android market (it's free). This will start a proxy server on your EVO. I believe the intended purpose of filterproxy is to block certain sites from your browser on your phone, but only if you browse using the proxy. filterproxy has a side effect allowing the phone to act as a proxy server for other devices that connect to it.
Once you've installed filterproxy, start tethering and connect your computer to the tether. Configure your browser's proxy settings to use your phone as a proxy. The method for changing your browser's proxy settings varies from browser to browser, but here are a few.
Internet Explorer 8:
Click on Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections tab -> LAN settings
Check the box for Use a proxy server and enter the appropriate settings
Firefox:
Tools -> Options -> Network tab -> Settings
Select Manual proxy configuration and enter the address and port in the HTTP Proxy section
Check the box for Use this proxy server for all protocols
Chrome:
Click on the Customize tool icon in the upper right of Chrome and select Options from the menu
Click Under the Hood on the left
Click Change proxy settings
Click LAN settings
Check the box for Use a proxy server and enter the appropriate settings
For the proxy address, you'll need to enter the IP address that your phone is using for its WiFi access point. In CM7 this should be 192.168.43.1. For Android Wireless Tether it can be changed, but by default it is 192.168.2.1 (I think). If you can't find it, open adb shell or terminal emulator and type 'netcfg'. At the bottom you should see something like this:
wl0.1 UP 192.168.43.1 255.255.255.0 0x00001043
The 192.168.43.1 is the address being used for the WiFi access point. The port for your proxy is the port that filterproxy is using. By default it is 8000, but you can change it within the filterproxy app.
NOTE: changing your proxy server settings may prevent your browser from connecting to the Internet whenever you're not tethering. You'll have to check or uncheck proxy boxes or try making different shortcuts like this.

hey very curious here about this...i get crap speeds when tethering my internet on 4G....like really crappy...i use wireless tether and easytether pro for wired share...i downloaded the app filter proxy...how do i work it ? i am completely confused as to how to set it up etc...if you could help me there i could help test this out...ty
edit: just to let u know ur awesome !!! i live in a 4G area but never got the speeds my phone did while tethering...using ur method i get watever 4G is putting out now...its awesome...anywhere from 3MB to 9MB down speeds...fantastic !!!!!
First off I just want to say, Dees_Troy, you are a freaking Champion! I've been looking around too long for this answer to my prayer! I tried it out your workaround and it worked immediately and it was way too easy! I'm using an Evo 4G and I'm on Fresh 3.5.0.1 (Sense Rom). My speeds were ~.5 MBPS. I just did a speed test (on my pc, not phone) and hit ~3MBPS and now I am streaming and surfing like a crazy person. Thank you so much for posting this workaround!
Tethering worked fine for me...Pretty cool but needs to be faster ha!
I'm running 2.2 on my Evo 4G and this is what i got after doing this:
Before the fix via Speedtest.net:
DL: 66.1
UL: 117.8
After the fix:
DL: 323.9
UL: 85.6
Wrong thread.
Thanked you though for your contribution.
Cool Stuff
Hey this is great to know, I don't have 4g service in my area yet but it did seem to increase my tethering speed regardless. Also learned a little something about proxy settings
any idea how to do this on a Mac? i can't get it to work.

Well first go into the safari browser options/tools, then look for lan settings to start with.

Can you be very specific for the non-computer/smart phone experts please? There is mention in this post and the original linked post about changing settings...I am not sure how to do that. Is it in the phone settings, the filerproxy settings or on the computer settings?
Sorry to be a newb...

Nice thread...makes much more sense to me. i have 1 question...item #3 states, "open up terminal emulator..." I have no idea what that means...sorry.
Also, I understand (in theory about the rooting and bricking dangers of rooting a phone, and I am not sure I should do that...due to my obvious lack of skill. It seems like this does not require rooting your phone, or does it?
Thanks for your help (and patience).

Yes and no....to use filterproxy you don't need to be rooted. But you need to be rooted to use terminal emulator [app with root] along with wireless tether [tether without paying the sprint 30$/mo]
If you paid the fee, then you could bypass step 3. Rooting isn't hard if you use unrevoked. I can walk you through it, the whole process takes about 5 minutes, and you can unroot if you ever had to take your phone in for servicing.
Thanks. My only concern is not understanding what I did to my phone and not being able to restore it if needed. You make is sound simple.
I guess what I need is the dummy's guide to how to get free wi-fi, with minimal risks. Is that possible?
Thanks again.

Sure thing. Shoot me a pm, so as we don't bloat this thread. I'd get you rooted and all set up with minimal risks and walk you through it.
when i open up terminal emulator and type in netcfg, it gives me a permission denied error. i've never used this program before, so it's probably something really simple but not sure. i have an evo, rooted, no custom roms. thanks

Try typing su before you type netcfg.... example: su netcfg
su means sudouser in linux language
type is su first, now it gives me SU: Permission Denied. like i said im not familar with this at all or linux, but when i type in the SU NETCFG it gives it in all caps. is that the problem? it wont let me type lower case. any other suggestions? Thanks for the help.
edit: my first line when i open up emulator is
$ export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH
$
im uninstalling and reinstalling the proxy and emulator now just to try if that makes a difference. plus im a new member so need to wait 5 minutes between posts and edits so its a pain, lol.
Since I run TOR on my computer I figured I'd check into it for Android and wouldn't you know, it exists. In this age of tracking and privacy going out the door, it's nice to still be able to retain a bit of anonymity.
EDIT: I figured I'd add a small explanation for anyone that's interested in this and doesn't know what TOR is.
Without getting into great detail, some of which I'd have no clue what the hell I'm talking about, it's a way to be anonymous. If you do it correctly no longer will your IP address show up as you current IP which can be used to spy, hack, trace, ad target, and so on. Your IP will show up as something else. e.g. My current location is Overland Park, KS - my IP will reflect this, my ISP also knows my exact address from that IP. With TOR my IP shows up as being located in say, Russia. Problem solved, no more tacking and other bs.
This isn't a pass to do what you want online, you're still a human so act like it. It's just a take back a little bit of privacy and anonymity.

UPDATE: I fixed the issue of Orbot not connecting me to the TOR network. There are more in depth methods but I'll just give the quick and dirty version. After installing Orbot make sure everything is unchecked in setting except: start on boot, transparent proxying, tor everything.
Download ProxyDroid and in setting:
proxy host: 127.0.0.1
Port: 8118
Proxy type: HTTP
Auto connect: check
Global Proxy: check
don't mess with anything else unless you know what you're doing.
Now you can check your IP or use Orbot to check if you're on the TOR network. Enjoy.
Tor? I'm curious
dont send me pm's crying about how i hurt your feelings in a thread
So you know what Tor is then?
Well I installed it and so far it's working aside from not actually connecting me to the network. My IP stays the same so I guess I have to do a few things manually, oh well. When you first boot up and it's starting it eats the processor like a fat lady eats cake but that goes away after 15-20 seconds. On the plus side it doesn't start loading until after the system has finished loading completely so boot times aren't effected.
No sir I'm not sure what TOR is. Was hoping you might shed a lil light on the subject.
dont send me pm's crying about how i hurt your feelings in a thread
OK I updated the OP for you. Hopefully I got it right. I'm not a network genius so I may be a little off.

My main concern with this app is with how TOR works. Does anyone know if Orbot will turn your phone into node used for intermediary routing? (the desktop version does this)

There's an option in the settings for it but it's not activated by default. I couldn't imagine switching that option on while using 4G
I was a bit confused about how to use OpenVPN on an Android device because there was so little information around. I thought I'd post this to make it easy for others. It turns out to be very simple. I have an Android phone (Note 2, Jellybean) rooted and Busybox installed, but neither is necessary.
The following steps relate to using an Android device with a commercial vpn service (like an anonymizing service amoung others), but they should help clarify in other situations.
Step 1: download the OpenVPN config files from your vpn provider.
Step 2: download, install and start "OpenVPN for Android by Arne Schwabe" (O4A) (get it from any android app source, it's free, but donation to the author is optional and its a great app).
Step 3: on the "VPN Profiles" page of O4A, use the folder icon upper right to browse to the .ovpn config file for a server, select, and save it on the following page. The server name will appear on the Profiles page.
Note: Sometimes the server config files include a .p12 file which O4A will want to import, then require a password to decrypt...just uncheck that file (upper left) before saving; later O4A will ask for a password, just leave it blank and hit "OK", it will connect just fine (at least with my vpn provider).
Step 4: open the settings for the server you just imported (icon to the right of the server name), navigate to the "Basic" page, and enter your username and password at the bottom of the page (if your provider uses the u/p type connection). YOU ARE DONE (but, you will need to repeat this for each server you want to use).
Step 5: tap on the server name on the "Profiles" page, O4A will open the log file and you will see it going through the steps of the connection process in both the log and the notification bar . When it's finished successfully, you'll see "connected". You can check the connection in the log file. Also depending on your device the connection will show in the notification bar for as long as its connected. You can disconnect by tapping the notification.
The correct configuration settings for OpenVPN are usually included in the .ovpn file, so you likely won't need to change any config setting in O4A. However, you can add the line "auth-nocache" to the .ovpn file manually or add it on the O4A page "Advanced -> Custom Options". This will prevent the username/password from being cached if that's important to you.
NOTE: Using dnsleaktest.com I have noticed that google dsn servers appear sometimes as a dns server. This might represent a dns leak as there would seem to be no reason, for example, for a European located server to use a U.S. located google dns server. I'm not clear about why the google servers are showing up, maybe someone can verify/clarify.
However, you can force a dns server of your choosing by going to the "IP and DNS" page of the server config settings in O4A, and select "Override DNS Setting by Server". You can then use the default dns servers chosen by the author or enter your own.
Enjoy!
What is your choice server? I see free and fee ones, but wondering about true encryption security too.
I'm just now looking into this, and am curious at what point vpn should be considered or if it's overkill for me.

IMHO, anyone who cares about their privacy should use a vpn. It does give you privacy on the web. Otherwise all your net activity, email, messaging, etc.are recorded by your ISP as well as snooped by various international TLAs (three letter organizations i.e. FBI, NSA, CIA, GRU, etc) and commercial entities seeking to monetize your information.
There are many vpn services around, some good, some very bad. After doing some research, I've been using Perfect-Privacy.com for a few years. Some of the things I like about them are: you can sign up and pay anonymously, They have over 40 servers in some 20 countries. You can switch between servers from your machine in seconds. You can chain 2 or more servers for even stronger privacy (though you probably don't need that). They have free port forwarding (needed for some p2p progs). They do not log anything anytime. They donate part of their server bandwidth to the TOR project. Their servers are fast (I can dl at my ISP's cap speed (@12 mb/s) but PP's bandwidth is much higher if you can use it). There's no limit on your traffic. Their up time is very good...occasionally a server goes down, but they get it fixed timely and with 40 servers to choose from its not a problem. Their staff is friendly and responsive (though you should plan on following instructions for setup...pretty easy). They use OpenVpn with AES-256 bit encryption which is currently unbreakable (PPTP and L2TP are hackable) (they also provide access via SSH2, Socks 5, Squid, PPTP and L2TP). My take is that they are very committed to privacy; Overall I think the quality of their service is excellent. All that said, they are a bit more expensive than some vpns, but worth it IMO. You can sign up for one month to try it out, then apply that to a cheaper longer time if you like it.
BTW, you could use TOR (The Onion Router) to check out using a vpn. Its a great project, open-source and free! Its a bit slow because it chains through three servers and all the nodes/bandwidth are donated. But it works well and is a great great service to those who understand that privacy is important. Be aware that the TOR admins ask people not to use it for p2p because that lags down the system.
Hope that helps. Good luck
I am not going to pretend that I understand everything you wrote, but I think I know what you mean by P2P, and that is exactly the reason why I'm considering Vpn in the first place. That being said, I really appreciate you letting me pick your brain about it.

Glad to help. BTW TOR has a free web browser package with the TOR function already built in. Just download it, install and you're up and ready to browse anonymously. Easier than that it doesn't get Search for TOR, you'll find it.
Firefox & the CM browser will access top level domains but will not access 2nd page level when clicking on a link, though the first link you click on will load but any subsequent pages will give various error messages depending on the server used by the web site. This only happens on mobile data, over wifi there is no problem. On some sites I can still go back to the top level pages after an error msg but not on others.
I thought it might be due to bad data in cache etc, but wiping had no effect. I was on CM12.1 official (stock), so have upgraded to CM13 official (stock, NO mods like xposed etc) after a full factory reset with TWRP, but still have the same errors. ALso I have not loaded any addons to Firefox.
Example error msgs.
Thats an error. The requested resource is not available (Apache Tomcat/7.0.30)
or
HTTP Status 404 - /404/404.html The requested resource is not available (Apache Tomcat/7.0.30)
or
404 that's an error. The requested URL / was not found on this server. That's all we know.
or
Error. The request could not be satisfied. Bad request. (cloudfront)
I thought it might be IPV6, so I disabled that in Firefox via about:config, restarted app, no change rebooted phone but it was still the same.
Have tried with LTE connection and 3G.
I suspect it may be network related (Vodafone) but would like to rule out CM. It is also the same on the wife's Note 1 running NightOwl 12.1 (an almost stock CM12.1), she is on same network.
(It may have started after last update of Firefox, but stock browser also has same errors?)
Is anyone else having this issue? Any ideas what the likely cause is?
Have you tried to experiment with another browsers?

Hi Thanks for the reply, yes I have used one other browser, Opera Mini which works fine, maybe as it prefetches the page and strips it down to save data then sends it to your browser. So at least I was able to browse the net. But I like Firefox as I use the Reader view with a black background as easy on the eyes and saves battery, so I really want to get FF working again.
Also I have found a workaround for the moment. I had Orbot installed already so used it to create a VPN and Firefox works flawlessly through that (but some sites always ask for security checks etc as Tor, which can be a pain).
I don't understand the exact issue but it seems that when I click a link on a website it only sends the end part of the URL not the www.mainname.com/ bit just the /thisisalink/aboutstuff/ bit to a search engine so it never finds it. THough I could be wrong, as I've only ever made basic html & php websites many years ago.
The New York Times website gives a Google error (I assume they use Google to find their web pages & not a direct URL), (though I also get different styles of 404 errors on that site)
eg
Google
404. Thats an error.
The requested URL /thepage/youwant/blahblah/ was not found on this server. That's all we know
I'm guessing that something is wrong with your connection. I installed Firefox and found no problems at work.

Thanks for testing & confirming FF works on your phone, it seems to point to my ISP connection, though I can't see how it would cause this issue, need to do some more research sometime.
Solved, use "Vodafone AU" APN
This week my workaround, Orbot, stopped working (possibly due to me installing Cerberus as it's the only change I've made)
Anyhow that led to me finding a very simple solution. I went to the TPG/Vodafone website to try changing mobile data settings, but when I opened my phone's settings/Mobile Networks/APN I found there was already an alternative there so I changed from "Vodafone Live!" to "Vodafone AU" (they both point to APN live.vodafone.com but have slightly different settings). And now I can access all websites through either browser with no problems.
Differences are
