Preventing any data usage keeping gps - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi All
I am going abroad with my touch pro 2 where data usage costs 1 kidney a meg.
I want to disable any data usage whilst i'm out there but wish to use garmin xt and the gps for navigation.
What is most reliable way of preventing a data connection?
I appreciate I can change the gateway settings, but if I am roaming will it still connect as I'm not on my home network and bill my provider?
I have seen an app nodata, is this reliable?
Anybody had any experience of this?
Tom

Google Maps and Data Charges

Hi guys - quick question. I downloaded Google Maps today - and it mentioned there would be data charges. I had contacted Rogers to put a ban on my data usage to avoid data charges.
If i deleted the setups in GPRS, and have the ban from the Rogers Network side - will a charge still be incurred when I run the Google Maps?
Just curious.. I'd hate to get a mega bill at the end of the month!
Thanks all
Depends. If your using the wifi on your phone then you won't have any problems. If your using a data plan with your phone, then you will use the data plan. If you have data blocked and deleted the GPRS settings then there should be no problem. But, Google Maps only works if there is a connection, so it would be pointless to have it if you don't have an internet connection of some sort.
If you've done all the things you say you've done, then you will likely NOT incur any data charges.
That said, Google maps is useless without a data connection.
As a side note, try using Windows Live Maps Mobile (or whatever it's called). It still needs a data connection, but it's pretty slick. You can actually "speak" your search terms and it figures it out.

P4000 How too GET Free GPS Running no WiFI Or Data GPS, just FREE GPS ??

Question how can i get this GPS on my Telus P4000 Working for Free, No Data or cellphone towers or WiFi GPS, this phone has a Internal GPS, do i need tomtom or something to use it for free, or is there a way too use google maps or Live Search for the GPS as a Totally free GPS ?

any charges for gps?

i know that gps is free to use. but it seems that Desire does not have GPS. Is it using AGPS? How about if I using wifi, does it need charges?> I am afraid i will need to pay from using GPS.
The Desire has GPS and AGPS. I believe AGPS uses a small amount of data and so costs a tiny amount but either way It costs money to download the maps on Google maps unless you're on WiFi.
AGPS can use some data, but if you're worried about it (no data plan or roaming abroad), you can switch off mobile internet so absolutely no data is consumed.
If you're doing that, you will need an offline GPS solution though, such as Copilot, where the maps you need are stored on SD card.

Dave
thx a lot `~~~~
Remember that most of the data consumed will be for displaying the maps on the screen, assuming you are using it for that purpose. Using the GPS or AGPS itself will use little to no data. For example, if you have the camera set to embed location info in the photos you take, it won't need to pull map images to display. I have taken photos with no data connection at all, and the location info still embeds in the pictures. The location data in the pictures could only have come from the GPS, as there was no wifi or other antenna coverage.
If you are worried about how much data you will use over mobile networks, just set your wifi sleep policy to "never" in the options. If you have wifi at home & work, you will save some money by having your phone default to that.

Your GPS doesn't connect, it only receives GPS signal.
So you don't have to be scared to pay for that.
Maybe you mean GPRS, or other internet connection?
You can turn them of with Modaco NoData.
Notice that it doesn't break existing connections, so if you have an open connection, you have to break it, ie by a softreset.
After that no connection will be possible, untill you turn it on yourself.
GPS isn't a paid service. Your phone can receive signals from the satellites at no fee (which will tell you the current latitude, longitude, and altitude). If you use some type of mapping or nav program that uses an internet connection, like Google Maps or Bing, then the internet data downloaded will incur a fee. Or some carriers, like ATT, have their own navigation service that incurs a monthly fee. But if you are using Energy ROM, that software is not pre-installed.
ok, now I get it. sorry for my noob question and thank you for the responses. (I really thought you had to pay for the GPS )
You've already paid for GPS. The satellites are mostly military, paid for by your tax dollars.

[Q] Galaxy tab 3 10.1 and 3g pen

Hi,
I'm considering to buy this tablet for work. But, because of some money restrictions i can only buy the wifi version. in case i need some mobile internet is it possible to connect a 3g pen to this device via USB? any restrictions?
thanks
Alternate solution?
Alternately, using Bluetooth tether from your tablet to your 3g/4g/LTE phone may be a good solution. It's easy to set up, good data speeds, and best of all you only have to pay for one data plan. I do this all the time between my Tab 3 10.1 (without 3g) and my Note 1 (with 3g).

I think the GPS on the Tab 3 is far superior than, at least, on my iPhone 3GS. The GPS activates and locks onto satellites very fast, even without A-GPS (network or wifi). I do not believe you will need a 3g to get better GPS reception.
gps without a data connection
Of course, if you're using a gps app that relies on a real-time network source of maps, POIs, and directions (Google Maps, Yahoo, etc.) then that app is pretty much worthless without a data connection (3g or whatever). If you will be without a network connection where you need to use maps, use osmand. It's based on Open Street Maps. You can preload maps for the areas you expect to be in and not worry about a data connection.
