I've had my phone since Sunday, but I just put the SIM in it last night, and hadn't placed a phone call until today... That's when I discovered the horrible noises that the microphone is making during every call.. Even happens when using the built-in voice recorder.. Does not happen on a bluetooth headset, and persists after a hard reset.
Yep, that's right, going back to the store.. Sigh...
Happily the ATT store had a Tilt 2 in stock, swapped it out today without any question. They didn't even really look the phone over or verify my problem, which I was surprised at..
First thing I checked was the voice recorder, and it worked, so I've been charging and restoring. One interesting thing though, was that my ROM version appears to be different.. I'm opening a different thread on that one though.

I bought my Xperia Arc 7 days back. Everything is just fine and I liked this cellphone very much, But suddenly yesterday when am using Google voice.. 1st and second time everything is great, Google voice recognized my every word but 4th time it says no voice input. I ended the program and go back to sleep. In the next morning one of my friend called me and he did not hear my voice. and from now on nobody is not hearing my voice. After that what I did....
1. On/off noise cancellation.(nothing happened)
2. Reset the phone to factory default.(nothing happened)
3. Restore rom with flash tool.(nothing happened)
4. installed voice meter and when I open it, its started from 70 bd not 0.
5. Checked with voice recorder. Without speaking anything its sound meter was full and when I played the recorded sound some weird sound coming.
But nothing happens to my microphone. Its just dose not working. If I close my mouth near to it and speak out loud then only my low voice is heard on the other part. Please help me as I already unlocked my boot-loader so I am now out of warranty.
First off, forgive me if this was already answered, I tried searching for about 15 minutes before I decided to post this.
As the title states, I'm having an issue with my gnex where I get this high pitched and crackling sound when receiving SOME incoming calls. I can't hear the person, and whenever they speak, the noises get louder so I can't hear them at all.
I think it's software, rather than hardware, since it doesn't happen on every single incoming call. From what I can tell, actually, it's totally random. But if I call the person back it is fine. They could even call me right back and it's fine.
My friend who also got a gnex from a different vzw store has the same issue. His also appears to be random.
Do you guys think it's just network, random phone problems, software issues, or all three?
Info: Verizon Wireless CDMA Galaxy Nexus running fully stock 4.0.2
For the record, I too am experiencing this issue. I also have the issue via 3.5mm jack and during other audio playback. At first I thought it was just my low-quality aux cable I was using in my car, but then I experienced it on a normal call. I was thinking software for this reason too as it happens via the jack as well as speaker... (Also happened watching Netflix, so that covers all audio output but bluetooth.)
Are people on custom roms experiencing this? I wasn't going to root this phone as I didn't see too much of a need, but I will if it will get rid of this issue.

if by crackling you mean it almost sounds like a fax sound, squealing, similar to this description, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1453769 , then yes I had this when I ran stock but now that im running francos, AOKP, and the 4.0.3 radios(which arent included in most 4.0.3 roms), i have not had the problem.
My GF had a problem where her mic was bad, about 50% of the time i got a call from her she would sound muffled, almost as if underewater. She exchanged it at VZW and haven't had any problems since.
Hey guys, I'll try to be as specific as possible. It's been a little over a year since I've had this phone and this happened within maybe a month of me getting it. I've looked online but haven't had any luck other than one dead XDA post from last year.
When I got my G3 from Tmo i rooted it and installed xposed and then G3 Tweaksbox so I could enable call recording. After installing it something happened (most likely installed a rom since I was still on the stock at the time) and the call audio became erratic. Since then I've had intermittent call audio from the ear piece, bluetooth calling still works, audio with a plugged in headset still works, speakerphone still works, just nothing from the ear piece. I figured out that if I pulled up Skype and placed a call to the test line, and jacked up the audio while the call was taking place the ear piece would magically start spitting out audio, and it would continue working until I rebooted my phone, then it would stop and I'd have to do the skype nonsense all over again. Since then I've had many, many.......many full wipes, kernel changes and various roms installed. For the longest time i was using Blisspop but as of a month ago with one of the updates the call audio just stopped working completely. Now I'm using SlimLP and am still having no luck. I have no idea what's wrong and am all out of ideas.
Nexus 5X, Stock 8.1.0 with security patch level 5 April 2018.
If I make or receive a call, the other party cannot hear me, my voice is severely muted and garbled. I've tested this by leaving messages on my home phone and all suffer from exactly this.
Now the microphone itself seems to be fine - WhatsApp voice messages are perfectly clear, I installed a voice recorder app to check and the recordings are good. Google voice searches also work fine.
I've done a factory reset. I've uninstalled updates to the Google Phone app. I've swapped SIMs. I've tried alternative dialers. I've turned on/off 2G /3G /4G. But my voice calls are always rubbish.
Anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on or suggestions as to what else to try?
Thanks!
Hi
I'm just visiting here with the same problem. I've been getting complaints about call quality from my end for a little while and it's driving me mad trying to be heard, often it starts off okay, then degrades rapidly after a few minutes, other times its from the start of the call. I've done the same as you, the mic tests fine in other apps, and sometimes it works okay. I did a complete factory reset which did seem to improve things but the problems returned, and no, I hadn't added any apps in between it working and going back to being terrible.
I've also tested calling my home answer phone and leaving a message to see what people are complaining about, and it is just constant drop outs. This happens over Wi-Fi calling, and over the network (EE network/UK), so it's not a reception problem. I've also used a plug in headphones with microphone and it's the same problem.
I really didn't want to buy another device at this time, but to me it's looking like a hardware problem.

Phil

Before I did the factory reset I had tried turning off noise reduction in the build.prop as recommended to try but it made no difference.
It sounds to listen too as though it's a faulty connection, and I'm thinking now this might be related to the reboot loops caused by connection problems, and this has the same cause, broken connections on the main chip. It's odd the sound is okay when recording sound or video, however that might simply be because the sound is being routed and processed elsewhere, and it's only when it's compressed for a call and routed via the Qualcomm modem that it's affected by a faulty connection. This would explain why sometimes for me it is okay, or starts of on a call okay then as the phone warms up the connection starts breaking.

Hi
I've now upgraded to a Pixel XL 2 as I needed to be able to be heard on calls and the 5X was out of warranty and LG didn't want to know. I really didn't want to upgrade quite so soon. The XL with the same SIM card on the same mobile network is all good and everyone can hear me, plus I have the benefit of VoLTE.
I believe the microphone problem is hardware related, most likely the same cause as the boot loop issues where the CPU or board has some broken solder connections. It sounds like a broken connection, and explains why it has progressively become worse. It's a pain as usually when I upgrade my phone gets handed over to another family member, but I can't do that with the broken 5X.

Alright guys, I've got a problem I haven't quite dealt with before:
I've got no sound coming from my "external" phone speakers. The in-ear speaker works fine, and so does the mic. That means I can take phone calls just fine. Listening to Whatsapp voice messages is a challenge because Whatsapp uses the speakers which means the message plays with no sound, that is until I hold the phone to my face and the prox switch tells the app to play through the ear speaker. No YouTube videos or Snapchat sounds.
I looked around the forums and such but didn't find anything. I've checked all the system settings I know to check, but nothing I can find is "muting" the sound. My apps list is fairly standard. Stock rom and kernel, unlocked since day 1 but without even a recovery installed. Basically a factory phone.
What are you guys thinking? I'm happy to try basically anything. Even thinking of slapping a ROM into this beast to see what happens, although I doubt there's too much development going on for a 2yo phone...
Cheers!
Update:
I've got intermittent sound. I haven't opened the phone and have no reason to think water ingress could be the problem, but I can't think of a reason that the speakers would work intermittently. Sounds more like a hardware problem than a software problem to me. Anyone else?
It also happened to me except I didn't have any sound coming from both speaker and the earpiece. Not sure what happened though.

Well it only has one speaker. As for the others most likely hardware related.

Weirdly, I'm stuck in unreliable-sound limbo. I get sound most of the time, but speaker sound disappears occasionally with no predictability that I've found. Interestingly, If I mash or smack the bottom of the phone phone screen by the speakers, sometimes sound will come back on briefly or entirely. Weird, huh? Not sure what could be causing a connection problem. Maybe I'll open up the phone eventually and find out.
