TP2: Esmertec Jbed/Opera Mini - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

What version of Esmertec should I use for WM 6.5? I'm trying to get Opera Mini going on my AT&T Tilt2..

This guy has done all the work for us... He uses 20090216.5.1 & sets the fonts to be a little bigger so they're not to small on VGA/WVGA screens.
I <3 Opera Mini more than any other mobile browser (except Safari but we can't use that)

if you want a newer version of Jbed go here:

if you do go with a newer version & want the font bigger, let me know & i'll post the registry edits that are in the CAB from the first link

Thanks. I've gone to the latest Jbed. Can you please post your registry edits for the larger fonts? TIA>.

mine are currently set as this, you can probably make them bigger though.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Apps\Esmertec Java\Device Info\Java Font
"Size Large"="30"
"Size Medium"="26"
"Size Small"="20"

Thanks! I went a little smaller, but all good.

Good info here. Opera mini is a great light browser.

Great info, everyone. Thank you. Two questions:
1. Any way to make it the default browser (there was a cab for this on my Tilt)?
2. Any way to register it to remove those annoying permission prompts?
Thanks again.

Yes & Yes.
I don't have a cab for 1) handy - search for mortscript and you will get there.
2) go to \windows\appdb and find selector.utf. (Backup &) Edit it. You will see an entry for domain
change:
domain=untrusted, \
to:
domain=tckmax , \
(note that I added spaces to make the length of the second entry identical to the first)
copy the file back and u are all set - no more Java Nag..

Thanks very much!

Actually when I tried making that change, I got an error:
The MIDlet could not be instantiated:
java.lang.NullPointerException
Any ideas? Thanks.

make sure you put enough spaces to match the length of the old entry.. The best way is to open the file in a program which allows you to see spaces/hidden chars, copy the domain line and replace untrusted with tckmax and start adding spaces till the length of the two lines match. then delete untrusted..

I did this tweak on my Fuze w/ WM 6.1. Worked fine.

But last night, after I installed both versions of Opera Mini (v4 and the new Beta) on my Tilt 2 , I searched for the appdb folder and the selector.utf file -- to perform the tweak on the Tilt -- couldn't find them anywhere.
Can any of you folks help me out here? Did something change with WM 6.5? What am I missing, and what do I have to do to run Mini.
Those annoying "untrusted" prompts are driving me crazy. Thanks.

Instead of the utf hack, uninstall Opera Mini, go back to the download page from Opera Mobile (do not dL from your PC). Choose the option to download a previous version (do not select the Download Opera Mini link), and select the Verisign version (it's still 4.2). Viola! No more confirmation screens. I got this tip from this board, so thanks to whomever it was that posted it.
I'm surprised anyone likes Safari better than Mini. iPhone, Pre, and Opera Mobile all have the same problem, which is you need to grow and shrink multiple times to read a web page. I find it cumbersome. Plus, I can switch between mobile & non-moblie views. Each has their uses.

That worked. Went to the previous version, selected the "multiple certificates" choice (of 4.2), and installed it. When I ran it, the first time Mini connected to the internet, I got a "... accesses the network" prompt, but with one of those little check-boxes that says "don't show this message again." Well, on my 6.5 Tilt 2, when I check it, it does show up again, but only once, the FIRST time Mini connects. After that, no more prompts until you exit Mini and start another session. Nice. Thanks!

That's odd -- I only got the message once and was never asked again, regardless of reboots, hard reboots, etc. It loads the first page directly, no questions asked. I used the Verisign version on 6.1.

Tried the Verisign ver., too. Same result for me (It's not like I'm complaining, mind you). Probably a combination of the phone, OS and who knows what else.
I'm just happy to be able to use Mini without the annoyance. Even with an excellent 3G connection, the version of Opera that shipped with my Tilt 2 performs horribly. I could grow old trying to bring up Google, or WAP pages. It's worse than IE. Never thought anything could be worse than IE.
Skyfire really rocks here, though, for some reason. Just a few steps behind Mini for busy sites like the Wall Street Journal. Go figure.
Anyway, thanks again.

how to change the default internet browser?

hi to everyone,
thanks to this forum i started to use opera 8.5 on my qtek 9000 but infortunately every time i receive an email with a link it launches ( as i click on the link) PIE. is there a registry hack to modify the default inetrnet browser or am i condamned to copy the link and paste it on opera tu use it?
thanks for your help.
I know this answer is not up to the level of this forum...but maybe it is better than no answer:
I have installed Netfront 3.3 ( i definitely believe it is superior to Opera) and it allows to select NF as the default browser.
I had installed Opera and deinstalled it later, so I cannot check if it offers such an option to select it as default.
Andy.
Answer
To set any browser as the default one
open a registry editor
point to HKCR
and the extensions that you want the new browser to open:
htmlfile
http
https
ftp
url
xml
go to shell\open\command\default
For opera9 modify into:
"OperaL.exe" %1
it should be the same for other browsers
What the f**k!!
This is a 2 years old thread!!

Opera 9.5 gives you the chance to set as the default borwser and works like a charm! I have not tested Netfront.

Thread may be 2 years old, but it's useful to me. I am trying to kludge together a way to have Opera open up when I click on a shortcut in the Favorites folder, which I have attached to the start menu. This will allow me to store/sync my favorites through my work desktop IE, since I'm not permitted to install Opera on it. (BTW I'm actually using a Titan, but I figure the reg hack should be the same. And I have a used Uni in the mail, so I sort of belong here!)
Under HKCR->urlfile->shell->open->command, I have this not including the quotes: "operaL.exe %1"
This triggers Opera when I click on sopmething in my Favs folder, but it fails saying that the local file is not available. Am I missing something, or is this not possible? I somehow have Opera set to open when I click a link in an email, so I should be able to copy the syntax of that reg entry, but not sure where to look for it.
TIA
What do I change it to if I want it to Pocket IE? When I open the "Video Sites" for Flash Video Bundle, I get Opera Mobile 9.5... I can't access the videos straight from there. Can someone help me out?

Noob needs help

Hello everyone I just bought a new Tmobile Dash and I have been trying to personalize it as much as I can but there are some things I cant seem to figure out.
1. When I play a video in full screen I have to watch it sideways. Its not horizontal.
2. I want to take "No upcoming appointments." off of my homescreen. I don't seem to have a "Today" tab under Settings to adjust the homescreen like I read somewhere.
3. And I can't seem to put pictures with contacts for when they call.
4. I was also wondering what kind of ROM I should install because I just bought a not so big 2GB memory card but I would like to make my Dash faster.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I have Windows Mobile(R) 6 Standard
Already got the answer to question 3. Any help with the others?...

1) There's a registry hack which will fix this problem. First you need to download a registry editor. This program will allow you to alter or "tweak" various codes embedded in your ROM (operating system). Believe me--it's not as difficult as it sounds. You'll need to Google the phrases, "T-Mobile Dash+registry hacks+sideways video" (or something similar) and also "Registry editor+T-Mobile Dash". A page should eventually come up explaining how to do it.
2) I have no earthly clue how to do this. Once again...www.google.com is very helpful.
3) N/A
4) If you want your Dash faster, there are several other ROMs which run quicker than the T-Mobile Windows Mobile 6.0. I'd recommend the HTC 1.33 ROM or one of the MANY 6.1 upgrades by Kavana or rickwyatt. A user by the name of Mikey1022 has all of them in his signature.
To answer your #2... I have never seen or found a way to do this. It seems to be a limitation of the OS. Before I upgraded to one of the WM6.1 ROMs I found here, I was using Facade (www.sbsh.net). It is not freeware, but it is a really solid program and there is an active user community with extensive skins available. It also has integration with PocketWeather.
Using Facade, you can customize what is displayed for appointments on the home screen. You can display multiple days, tasks, static launchers, etc. I don't know if Facade is compatible with the WM 6.1 ROMs. I chose to go the 6.1 route because I think my Dash is MUCH faster with 6.1 than it was with 6.0.
Facade will slow the device down a little bit... all home screen programs seem to do so... but it never bothered me. Even so, WM 6.1 is a lot better overall.
I hope that helps.
the "my appointments" ( for WM5 & 6) not WM 6.1. is part of the .xml code in the particular homescreen you have loaded. The homescreen files are located in the /application data/home folder if you locate the homescreen file you have loaded. drag & drop it onto your PC and then open it with notepad. then if your good enough to read quasi-html code then you should be able to locate the one for the my appoinments. all you have to do is delete everything from "plugin" to "/plugin" , then replace the file back in the directory you got the file from then reload your homepage
I did that but it wouldn't save as a xml file, but a text file so it didn't work

when you go to save the file ( assuming you're using notepad) make sure you type the file plus .xml at the end of it then for file type under it select all files in the dropdown. That'll ensure it saves as XML

1. Use TCPMP instead, it handles more Video and Audio formats and is a much better program, and its free TCPMP
2. As already suggested use Facade. It really is the best for customizing your homescreen if you do not know how to edit xml files.
3. Contacts have to be stored on the phone in order to use Pictures.
Tons of Customizations can be found by visiting my Mods Page (signature), such as watching YouTube and other streaming media on your Dash, Freeware, reg hacks, tips and tricks (yeah yeah, shameless self promotion here).
Ok so I have installed so many different things like pocketnester, different homescreens, different backgrouds and the TCPMP but everytime I download something it says it might not work properly because it was made for an older version of windows mobile...

Opera Mini 4.2 (multisigned) as default browser?

I'm using the NRG Rose ROM 1.6. Instead of using the option to install Opera via the option under My Tools\Extras I downloaded the 4.2 multisigned version from Opera's website. This permitted me the option to not have all the security warning show each time.
Now I'm wondering how I can make it the default browser? I tried using a cab file called "WM6 SD OperaDefault.cab" and "WM6 OeraMiniAsDefaultBrowser - WithoutSelectionDialog.cab", but they didn't seem to work, perhaps because they were designed to work with an earlier version of Opera.
Are there any other solutions? Perhaps a registry tweak that I could do manually or something like that?
Thank you,
Tim

I installed the JZSmartmort file and it successfully set Opera mini as the default when I click on links in my email, but.... it doesn't seem to be able to successfully put in the URL once it launches opera mini.
It launches opera mini, then it goes into where it should put the URL in, backspaces out the default www. that opera puts in. Then it fails to paste in the URL that I clicked on. It then returns to the Opera Mini screen and ends after clicking on the opera menu button. Any ideas?

Hi,
I tried the JZSmartmort opera launcher and the StartOperaMini: Mortscript by Badbob001. I haven't successfully gotten it to launch links from email or internet shortcuts into Opera Mini 4.2.
In one discussion point, sagementor states:
Originally Posted by sagementor View Post

But I haven't seen any sort of file that references those names. And in the startoperamini.mscr there is no reference to a version, just 4.x .
So at the moment, if I want to launch a link in a received email or associate a sliding panel shortcut with a URL, I have to use slow ol' PIE .
But on a different note, I love the Spb Backup software. I can now play around with this stuff and restore it to it's 'before' state if it really messes things up. I've already restored several times today.
Thank you,
Tim

Anyone running Opera Mini?

Hi I was thinking of switching from Omnia to TP2 and use Opera Mini all the time due to its speed. Had anyone tested it on the TP2, wondering if the different screen res makes it differcult to read due to size or should it be better.
I just installed it in JBlend. The legibility is OK, although the default font size is a little small. The main problem is that opening or closing the keyboard requires you to restart JBlend, which is a royal pain in the neck as I often want to switch between landscape and portrait mode when I'm browsing.
This problem seems to exist with all JBlend apps.
Install JBed, works like a champ. Will thoroughly recommend it. Much better than JBlend.
On Jbed what is the font size like?
Are there no problems with keyboard as described with jblend?
I just installed the latest JBed and OperaMini now loads fine. The font is pretty small, but readable (by me, at least).
Does anyone know how to create a direct menu shortcut to a specific JBed application (e.g. OperaMini, GoogleMail, etc)? (i.e. without having to launch Jbed then select the app you want to launch). I'd also like to assign a different icon to each application, so that I can tell them apart purely from the icon.
Sorry for the obvious question: JBed? JBlend?
Are these some sort of Java runtimes that one must install on a WinMo device?
There's no Java ME edition in WinMO 6.1 by default?
I don't get why you wouldn't just use opera mobile which comes with it
Because until Opera Mobile 9.7 with Turbo ships, mini opera is several times faster with proper settings.
For the past 3 years I've used almost nothing but Opera Mini myself, instead of the full fledged browsers available (I have bought Opera Mobile as well and a Webkit browser).
It's just so much faster due to Turbo caching and fits my needs.
I suspect many others are in the same boat.

Thanks for the link.
So....following the instructions for jbed...I created a text file on the PC containing only the following line:
"\windows\jbed.exe -run s0_"
(with the quotes included). I copied this file to the TP2 and renamed it "OperaMini.lnk". When I run the renamed file it doesn't know how to handle it - I get the "Open with..." dialog.
Can anyone advise what I'm doing wrong??
itm,
I believe what you need to do, is create the shortcut file on your TP2 using a file explorer other than the stock WM one (at least on my Uni, it is not capable of creating shortcuts). I think you can either use the inbuilt function of the file explorer (i.e. paste shortcut or something like that) or create a file and change the file extension to .lnk (as you have done) Once the new shortcut file is created, you need to access the "properties" box of that file and in the box where it says something like "go to" or "link" you will need to paste "\windows\jbed.exe -run s0_" (with the quotes). You then save the change and should hopefully be ready to roll...
Appologies for the vague explanation, but left my Uni at home today, so can't physically go through the process on an actual WM device atm.
If you're still stuck after reading this, PM me and I'll try and walk you through once I'm home.

[CAB] Opera Mobile as the default browser

So this is for us Tmobile TP2 users who have PIE as the default browser.
I've had a few people test this & it has worked for most. I've also tested the updated cab from a fresh hard reset & it works for everything.
Things it does:
Sets OM as Default Browser
Makes OM the default for the Internet tab on TF3D
Changes the startup page on the Internet tab to Google
Sets search function on Internet tab to go through Google
Opens bookmarks on Internet tab in OM
Opens all links in any app with OM
Increases max tab allowed in OM to 5
Changes "Minimum overview Zoom" in OM to 90
Difference between OD & ODBookmarks
The ODBookmarks cab is the same except it takes away the globe & 4 default bookmarks on the Internet tab & just has your OM bookmarks listed.
(See screenshot)
Uninstalling
If you don't like this, just unistall like any other program. Also, to change the Internet tab back to Tmobiles default, install the TmoDefault cab. You have to do this because if you unistall the first cab it'll delete the settings for the Internet tab. Also, for some reason, no matter what, after you set OM to default, if you revert back to default settings, OM will still open all links in other appls. Don't know why, but it will not revert back to IE. Sorry.
Warning
If you've changed any settings in the OM ini, this will overwrite those settings so you'll need to redo them.
***Not for us with WM6.5 &/or Manila 2.5+ since i dont run a newer rom & i've never messed with it.***
Thanks for any help. Please leave feedback.
If you tried the original version & your links don't open in Opera, install the new one & everything should work. Thanks for helping test the original.
i installed the 1st cab and it works...launches opera by default from the net tab
It fixed the internet tab for me but links in mail still opened in IE.

Are you talking about the key on the keyboard? I don't know how to fix that. I was just thinking about that a few minutes ago.
Also, do links in emails & everything open up in Opera Mobile as well?

It still opens links in internet explorer, as far as I can tell. It did change the tab in tf3d.

Ok, i have to figure out what else i changed on my phone but didn't put in the CAB that's makes the links work on mine.
Works for me; plus my email links still open in opera mobile
Cool. Glad to hear it's working.
@jim_0068 I'm thinking you're right (on tmonews) that the preference setting inside OM is needed as well, so I may include a modded ini file for that in the CAB. Its weird though because my ini file shows that particular setting as not being changed yet it all still works for me.
I just wish I could compare my registry to someone who hasn't tried this or anything else on it, just to double check all the registry settings i changed.
Anyway to get this going for the WM 6.5 Windows Default home screen? On the bottom it says favorites, but IE is showing and you could add favorites for IE. I wonder if this could be Opera and add bookmarks for Opera.
Works Great
Thanks for the cab

I don't know if it will work for 6.5 or not. If you try it, don't hold me liable if it messes anything up. If it does work though, let us know.
Also, glad to see it works. I guess now i'll edit the original post to show what all registry edits & what-not that it changes.
to the original poster: I just noticed that while this works perfectly it doesn't scale properly when you are using touchflo 3d in landscape. was curious if you could look into that? thanks for the wonderful cab though.
Thanks for the cab., it worked perfectly for me. One very minor issue however. I have both the stock version of Opera Mobile and Opera Mobile 9.7 (I believe) beta downloaded from OM's website. When launching the default browser, it open with the stock OM, but with links to emails, the beta version opens up. this isn't a problem for me honestly, I even actually prefer it since the beta version actually scales the page better, but I just thought you'd wanna note that. Awesome work on the cab. and thanks again.
Oh yeah, how do I use the favorites cab.? Is that what I use to change the favorites on the internet slide of the tflo3D?
Worked great
No problems. I still had to do the configuration in opera:config to set it as default so it would be used from email links. Other than that, it worked perfectly. Thank you for the easy tweak. Those of us who dont know what we are really doing in the registry appreciate it when someone takes a tweak like this and wraps it up for us with a nice ribbon.

do you mean when you're on the Internet tab & go to landscape mode? I just did that on mine (i have it where the globe is gone) & it just moves all my bookmarks to the right. It seems that TF3D has it so that The globe will always default to the left part of the screen in landscape. I don't know how to fix that

As for the 9.5 vs 9.7 issue, i think that has to do with if you set 9.7 as default in the settings (i think that's an option)
The favorites cab is the same as the first except for it takes out the globe & the 4 default bookmarks on the Internet tab & just lists all the Bookmarks you have set in OM

Yeah I'm going to edit the cab to include the ini for OM with the "Browser First Time Launch" set to 1
Yeah the main reason I made this is so that I don't have to redo the registry edits manually next time i hard reset. Glad i could help out others
updated OP to fix changes in cab file. Everything should work.

What I meant was to make a new .cab for the WM 6.5 non Manila OS to have Opera the default. You know how it says favorites on the last slide and it's for IE? I want it for Opera instead. You know what I'm talking about right?

I haven't messed with 6.5 at all so i don't know what slide you're talking about or anything. Do you have a screen shot?
As for setting Opera as the defaultl (w/o TF3D), if someone could provide the registry tweaks (which probably are the same) for 6.5, I can compile them all in to a cab for you.
