I would really like one or two more sliding panels. is there a way to add another panel?
Also are themes just background/icon packages or do they change more?
Excellent question, i myself would like a couple extra slides. Although, i believe there is already a thread created for that.
From the aHome themes I've downloaded, its the icons, background and skin of the bottom tab when you slide up that are changed.
The only way I know of adding more panels is to download either Fresh Fase or Panda.
Try the following thread it will give you options to have 2-10 slide panels.

I currently use it on a stock, unrooted MT3G. No problems.
You need to load an alternative launcher. The stock one only supports 3 home screens.
Advanced Launcher is now stable though it is a bit slower than the stock one if you make heavy use of submenus. It scrolls the screens as quickly as the stock launcher... it is just the submenus that are slower. I have 62 apps in 5 submenus.
I use it with 6 screens and have no issues.
if you use cyanogenmod's rom you can apply this updated advancedlauncher.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=577651
It worked great for me, although now I use my own modified launcher with less tweaks to make it slightly faster. And installing aHome, PandaHome or OpenHome will make your OS slower.
Home problems are solved
Search the market for Home++. I've tried them all and this works the best. You get up to 7 screens. Have the option of allowing the wallpaper to scroll with the screens or sit still, choose which screen is the home screen, use the apps clock and calendar or the stock one, power strip at bottom with quick launchers, and theres almost no lag.
Best i've used yet. Can't hurt to try it.

Does anyone running non hero roms use any of the home replacements out there like sweeter home, dxtop, panda , ahome or any other ones?
i used open home recently on JACxROMv1.3 to change the ugly palm pre app tray. it worked for a while, but then it really started making the phone lag.
Open home was great but im using now stock home on CM3.9.10 build.. its better
http://sweeterhomeskins.blogspot.com/search/label/Themes
Nope, only used aHome on 1.1 before I rooted. Using the stock launcher on Cyanogen 3.9.11, loving global search
Advanced Launcher + Ted's Hero. I found all of them slow compaired to a themed phone.
Open Home is awesome... But it slows your phone down way too much
With Cyans ROMs a home replacement may not slow down the phone too much. The CPU scaling could help with the slowdown issues. There may be a little slowdown, but I doubt it would ever be slower than a stock build not running a home replacement.
I use the Home program that comes with the sdk samples. It's only got one home screen, an app drawer (lower right) and 3 icon spaces that list your most recent apps. It's all very basic and it's got a bug where it loses the wallpaper when you switch portrait-landscape, but here it is anyway if you want to try it. I'll be using this app as the base for a launcher i'm working on (I'll add 4 more home screens, widget capability, I'll turn the "recent apps" strip into a scrollable "favorites" strip, and maybe toss in some default, full screen widgets (like hero's, kind of like search is bundled as a widget for Launcher). It'll be a good long while though, i'm still brushing up my java.
to install this, connect your phone, put it in your C:\, and do:
Code:
adb remount
adb push C:\Home.apk.zip /system/app/Home.apk

Would defeat the purpose of a home replacement. Whole point is to make it look pretty. I'm not sure how the default home and a home replacement program interacts. If the default home runs in the background even when using a home replacement, then a lighter weight default home could help the system run faster.
ahome doesnt work at the moment on latest cyanogen experimental roms, DXTOP is nice i like the "diamond" shape screen layout, the speed is good but can sometimes be a little slow loading apps in launcher, sweeter home looks amazing the preview one is not really usable but a preview 2 will be out soon and it has amazing potential with being able to customise so many aspects of the layout. I loved the standard home with advanced launcher but am having issues with the advanced launcher i think where screen goes black. Currently i am on panda, I had tried this when it came out and really didnt see the point but it has come along and has some very nice touches will probably stick with this until I can resolve the issues with advanced launcher, overall speed is good on the home replacements but the standard home is the quickest, the launcher is so smooth and there is no lag at all.
I'm using dxtop... its pretty quick now.
I was having lag issues many iterations of CM and dxtop ago. But both are working very well with eachother now. dxtop also added a categories view for the tray and you can have live folders of those categories on the desktop.
The dev is also constantly working on this to optimize it and add features. (I beta for him)
I would like for a home replacement to incorporate the sense UI bar.
I am beta testing SweeterHome right now. IT IS AWESOME. The new and improved SH will have some options that will just blow the others AWAY! (IMHO)
With the current Beta options I only need to use about three of my total screens (with widgets and ALL)... And, the third screen is used for the Application Grid.
I'll be sure to post something in the Apps section when it comes available.
There are some seriously great new options in the new SH and the image handling has all been updated - so, it works much faster.
There are a few features that just blow me away. But, I have to wait to speak about them until the app is ready!
I know... I know... but why?!
Why not?! For the time being, I'm barely using 4, so why the extra 3?! Any way to get it down to 5 for now?! Until more is needed?!
Try LauncherPro
Umm just curious but just don't go to the last left or right screen. The home button can take you back to the middle and you are good to go?
Launcher Pro is an alternative but perhaps you like Sense...well..Refer to first suggestion.

Obviously I know I can avoid the last 2 screens, but I was wondering if it was possible in order to avoid going to that screen by accident. It would also make it easier to select the proper screen when pinched out.
How different is Launcher Pro?! The only reason I like Sense is due to the widgets they have. Will the same ones work with Launcher Pro?!
Just switch to LauncherPro.

I totally hear you. If widgets weren't starting to get so big I think I would be pretty happy with 3.
No, Sense widgets will not work with LauncherPro (or any other launcher) but there are some good market replacements. Also LauncherPro is moving towards having it's own set of widgets that replace most of the functionality of sense, which I think is a great idea.
It is probably possible that someone could open up the Rosie (Sense Launcher) apk and edit a line somewhere to tell it to only have 5 screens, but I haven't ever seen anyone do it. It would only be usable on a rooted phone too, since Rosie is in the Nand, and you can't change it out without root.
ADW.Launcher. how many desktops would you like today? 1 or 7? with adw it's your easy to make choice. along with many many other swell customizations.
i have reduced my total number of desktops as well. i use SmartShortcuts to condense my more commonly used apps and place those icons on the adw bars.
it will have the same issue with widgets. if a widget has been written specifically for Sense it won't work. however, there are many nifty cool things in the marketplace.
for example you you can use:
SmoothCalendar - a calandar widget (there are many on the marketplace depending on style preference)
Beautiful Widgets - many folks love this product. (not a free product)
DigitalClock Widget - what i use to get time/date on my screen.
SmartShortcuts - allows me to keep a very clean main desktop...the 4 visible icons pull up custom application groups. (see chess screenshot)
i would also suggest trying out:
QuickDeskBETA - see screenshot with all the icons? that is QD, it will popup over top of any existing window simply w/ a long press of the search button. so i can turn on my screenshot tool without going all the way back to main screens or turn on 4G without having to exit the browser.
one last thing, i would suggest that you install either launcherpro or adw and play with em. what will happen the first time is this. when you click on the home button it will ask you which launcher you wish to use (Sense, adw or launcherpro). there is a check box that says 'make this choice default' ... check that button when you feel semi confident as to which launcher you wish to use. 2 days later when you decide that you want to try using Helix2 (or whatever) simply go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications -> go to the current default laucher and "clear defaults" (see the adw screenshot)
I've been using ADW since I started playing with CM several weeks ago. I really like it and have no plan to switch to anything else. That said, I am confused about different versions. I know CM ships with one version, but because of the magic of froyo (I think, anyway), a version that I downloaded from the market many moons ago keeps automatically reappearing every time I flash a new nightly. And until I select one as the default, they both appear as an option when I press the home button. Eventually, I get it reconfigured back the way I like it, but it's kinda time consuming and a bit frustrating.
One of the versions has an "Edit" button when you press the menu key while on the home screen. This pops up a nice little aerial view of your home screens and you can add, delete and otherwise manipulates those settings. However, it's not always there and sometimes takes a little fiddling to make it show up. So far, it seems to show up by accident or of its own volition. I've also played with the options to back up and restore ADW settings, but it never seems to remember my ****. Default screens, number of screens, shortcuts, etc.....sometimes they are there and sometimes not.
If anyone can make any sense of the versions or point to some place with some info, I'd love your thoughts. FWIW, I did actually try to search, but ADW is so common, the results were like finding a needle in a haystack.
Thanks!

CM6 uses a decently customized version of ADW since it is open source (LauncherPro is a superior launcher but CM6 is all about open source....)
Just delete your market version of ADW.
So Cyanogen's version is the one with the "Edit" button on the home screen menu? I suppose I could just delete one and see what happens, eh? Worst thing that could happen is I need to reinstall it, right?
Yeah CM6 has that edit button.

Lol to each his own. I have used ADW for a long time now, and I used LP for several weaks. I stoped using LP right around the time that he was starting to have a paid version. I didnt stop using it for that reason. I personaly like ADW. If you ask me ADW is the superior launcher. The only think LP has over ADW is a customizable dock, I loved that option. Other then that LP falls behind on some key features like swype gestures, the galaxy s app drawer and settings to adjust the speed of the app drawer opening and closing as well as settings to adjust the bounce between page changes on the home screen as well as settings to adjust the speed between pages. Furthermore, ADW also allows you to customize the size of the widget you are placing on the homescreen. ADW also allows you to customize icons with a custom icon image (think better cut here) it has a hidden dock bar that allows for tones of apps to be placed below it. Yes LP has a similar option but you can only place a max of 15 icons there the 5 you normaly use and 10 more no biggy though 10 should be enough actually 7 is for me. Oh and you can adjust the coloms and rows to allow for more or less apps on the screen and in the app drawer. Just saying man lol.
Its still comes down to the user and what he likes. I just like to keep the sides equal. Also I know LP has the notification counter icons but after not using them for so long I actually prefer it without. Wow I just said that.. that was a big issue for me when first changing from LP to ADW. LP is also more sense then ADW considering the creator is making some great sense like widgets. Great work from both developers I just prefer ADW, the options appeal to me.

If you have two ADW launchers then most likly google is restoring your apps when you flash a new rom. My suggestion is turning that off and restoring the apps manually. Manually implies finding them and restoring them from the market if possible. Titanium backup is great but you should be restoring an app you saved from a diffrent rom on to a new rom and so forth. I am not sure why you have to ADW launchers this is just my theory.
Have you tried removing ADW from your market downloads or uncheck automatic update? I don't use CM6 so I'm not sure if the apk info for the edited ADW version isn't being recognized by the market. But on the thing about the "edit" button, I don't think that's a custom CM6 option because I have it on my market-installed ADW.
For some reason I thought it was 2.2 that implemented the automatic backup of apps, but it makes sense that it's google doing it behind the scenes. I removed the market version of ADW with no problem and hopefully it won't come back next time I flash a new nightly CM.
Thanks to everyone for your help.
Yeah remove the the ADW that is located in your market downloads. Also the menu edit was impliment with version 1.1.2-.4 and is not just a CM6 option.
It is 2.2 that back ups apps I am not sure how that works though.

I ran a few searches and while there are some topics on other sub-forums just thought I'd ask here. Is there a general aversion to using this app?
I've used it on all the ROM's I've flashed and have found that it is more efficient than a stock launcher. It most often runs smoother as well especially the app drawer.
I know there are many who use it here, but overall rosie's get the win on XDA hance all the rosie/Sense mods.
Is it because it is not an open source launcher? Is it the aesthetics? Is there such a thing as "Android Purists"?
What say you!
I love it but won't use it because i love my sense widgets too much and it acts funny.with widget locker

Been using it since almost Day 1. I change backgrounds and clocks fairly often. Wouldn't use anything else.
You lose all the sense widgets. And in the new sense roms which have been ported to the inc, there are great new ones - so on the new sense roms I can't afford to use launcher unless they have equivalent widgets.
I use launcher pro on cm6.1 which is an aosp rom. There it is the better option because I don't have any possibility of getting the sense widgets anyways...

Thanks for the replies so far! I use one widget (smooth calender) and forgot about all the sense widgets folks like to use.
I use launcher pro as well. I think its a great home replacement. Gives great options in settings to change almost everything. I currently just have it set to give me 3 home screens and that is it. I don't need any more than that currently.
I replaced the Sense widgets with beautiful widgets and extended controls. I also love launcher pro's ability to make custom shortcuts that can take you directly a page in the setting menus that may be 2 to 3 pages in. Saves a lot of time as I currently have one set directly to the development page. Have to turn that thing on to use PDAnet.(The 3g hotspot just doesn't work for me very well as it drops my laptop every 10 minutes and then it cannot join it again till I restart the hotspot on the phone.)
Additional Info:
I never really liked senses giant phone button at the bottom of the screen all the time. With launcher Pro I can make the dock look like stock android. Once I made the switch I never went back

Launcher Pro is great, and Launcher Pro Plus is worth every bit of $2.99. It's one of the only apps I've paid for and it has all of the sense widgets; including multiple bookmark and calendar widgets for example. In addition, having the ability to resize any widget to your liking I find makes it that much more attractive. Like you also said the shortcut option basically eliminates the need for apps like Bettercut. And of course the obvious options to change docks and icons make it a fun alternative for people.
Good stuff I've always like LP as well and got the + version as soon as it went live. A lot of proponents so far!
I think i remember seeing something that the dev of Launcher Pro asked that it not be cooked into custom roms

If the stock launcher isn't used, they cook ADW or launcher 2 into ROMs. But you always have the option of installing LP and even removing the launcher you had previously
over at rootzwiki i just learned that ICS can go into tablet mode, so i did switch and i find it perfectly usable. some apps are even more useful than before like settings, mail, etc.
my only gripe right now is the launcher, it wastes space. i use nova with a 7x7 grid but in portrait mode its too small and in landscape mode i'd like to have more icons in the app-drawer.
does anyone know which launcher will do better? also, is it possible to get back stock launcher2? im on aokp b27 and it had trebuchet (which crashes) and nova.
thanks!
ps. for those who don't know it yet, try it out:
0. make a nandroid. should your launcher crash you are screwed
1. get latest aokp
2. change dpi to 190 in rom control
3. add hide-navbar option in powermenu
4. press powerbutton and hide navbar
5. reboot
trouble-shooting:
market trouble can be resolved by following the steps indicated in the AOKP dpi changer. i still had to manually delete its cache and data plus force close it until it finally shut up and let me download.
phone.apk will likely crash. it can be fixed be exchanging it with the one from AOKP's droid incredible build: http://www.file-upload.net/download-4168356/Phone.apk.html
i used adb, can also be done via root-browser i guess

Yea I was going to say, ADW is my choice for my 10" Tablet.
My Setup:
Hide Dock Bar
Hide Status Bar (top part with App Drawer and redundant menu icon)
Hide Desktop Icon Text
Create a Drawer Icon coupled with whatever desktop icons.
Crank up the desktop Row/Column
This gives you a pretty large work area that is edge to edge. I don't use the dock bar but rather hide it and place my own icons. This removes the restriction of a 5 icon dock.
However I've never done this on my Nexus so I don't know how small the icons would be.
Hiding the statusbar is tricky because it doesn't work via the options checkbox. You have to create a gesture to hide/show statusbar. Go to the desktop and perform the gesture to hide it. Then go back into settings and delete the gesture. Now you'll gain access to the top bar.
With the Status bar gone, you access ADW Settings via the App Drawer like other ICS launchers.
why hiding the navbar? it's only initially since tablet mode brings its own, and i really like it so far. i find it more useful than the one in stock ICS even.
i installed adw and sadly i really don't like it so far. it feels like gingerbread and i hate having to theme ICS when im on ICS. but function-wise i got tiny icons in portrait mode and they seem to behave kinda strange. for now i got nova back, wastes space but i find it optically more appealing.
what i search would be a launcher that can stretch icons. i'd like it to behave just as before, if i use a 4x4 grid it would be cool if it could use the entire screen and not just a tiny fraction. nova comes close using a 7x7 grid but 49 tiny icons look kind of cluttered - not really nice for a homescreen.
btw, look how youtube reacted to tablet mode, never used a tablet or owned one, so my jaw pretty much dropped when i saw it running.
APEX launcher does the job. uses 100% screenspace and icons are big enough.
Also, check out Go launcher Ex. Make the icons larger in the settings menu. I manual set them to 80 and they look great. I also remove the top bar in the launchers setting menu. Set the screen to 6x6 and it looks perfect. Of course running an ICS theme but I don't mind a theme when I am actually on ICS. it is when you are on GB running an ICS theme that makes it feel cheesy!
I wish we could run the density in 160 but it seems like no phone.apk will run in that density. While running in 190 you need to use a modded market but it still seems like the market causes issues with certain apps while trying to download them. 160 would be native so we wouldn't need a modded market.
i still know it from my gf's phone, but must say i never liked it much. i guess im pretty happy now with apex in tablet mode, looks almost stock without the dpi changes, as it should. if i had the 5-button dock back and the notification-curtain (don't like they way they implemented that for tablets, it sucks) yeah it would be perfection but that can't be done unless the rom gets rewritten. im using it now daily, can live with small kinks and the new gapps/settings more than make up for it - would never ever want to revert to old mail/youtube/contacts/callendar, etc.
btw, are there rom's out there making dedicated use of it? i guess could care less about the newest tweak that gives me 5 minutes more battery power. but something that transforms the entire UI/IX into something more useful...

That launder does not work with the densities that we can use. It does work at 160 in portrait but not landscape.

Worked well with AOKP until it went into airplane mode and never got out. I then rebooted and my cellular data was gone all together. Guess it really thought it was a tablet.

Yeah, data seems to be a little weird. I downloaded a file then it just stopped and wouldn't connect again and I couldn't make a call either. It was still showing full bars and 4G though. A reboot fixes it. I was running Franco's kernel so thought maybe it had something to do with that so I am back on stock kernel and going to see how it behaves. I so don't want to give this up. It it pure awesomenes!

thats terrible, i better make a nandroid before i try it. a custom rom would be great though, im getting really tired fixing this up.
the thing is, i really dislike the new tablet notification center, and the launcher. i wish it would behave just like before, if it could perhaps be tricked into ignoring the fake dpi. and i reaalllyy miss the notification curtain and the dock-bar. i tried hours to find some replacement for the old dock, the only thing that came close was desktop visualizr from the market, it creates resizable launcherbuttons with or without label and let's you set icons/images.
i love the new apps and settings, but the homescreen looks kinda long and dorky.

btw, your widgets look nice, could you share their names?

Good call on Apex Launcher, looks good:
Yeah, data seems to be a little weird. I downloaded a file then it just stopped and wouldn't connect again and I couldn't make a call either. It was still showing full bars and 4G though. A reboot fixes it. I was running Franco's kernel so thought maybe it had something to do with that so I am back on stock kernel and going to see how it behaves. I so don't want to give this up. It it pure awesomenes!

Let me know if data is still a problem after reverting back to stock because I'm currently on Franco's kernel, also.

So far so good on stock kernel after a few hours. Will continue to test.
Edit...Data just stopped working with stock kernel. That really sucks! 4G still shows and so does the data arrows but no data works...

guys, i modded apexlauncher with apktool. made some changes in dalvik code to trick it into getting back the old dpi and brought back the dock through changes in the res files. icons are back to normal size aswell. it craps its pants though when it goes to landscape and the appdrawer shows only half of the screen, definitively needs more work. if someone could help with this i'd really appreciate it.
try it out for yourself: https://rapidshare.com/files/4205643622/ApexLauncher-signed.apk
