Victorian Style Dialer for CM 4.1.11.1 - G1 Themes and Wallpapers

Hey Guys,
Ok, so I was inspired a bit by a Steampunk website to make a dialer that's a little more 'old fashioned'. It's for CM 4.1.11.1 and I quite liked it. I haven't made screenshots yet, but I a mock-up of the dialer. It's what you should see on your device. I took the dial portion from Chrome by Moonspoon as I didn't have the patience to finish it before sending it out!
Check it out, and let me know what you think! IF YOU HAVE IDEAS LET ME KNOW!
Installation: You must adb push the contacts.zip into your CM 4.1.11.1 to make it work.
For adding it to your phone from a COMPUTER WITH ADB try:
Code:
adb push C:\%SAVEDPATH%\Contacts.zip /system/app/Contacts.apk
For adding it on your phone, try:
Code:
mount sdcard
mount system
cp /sdcard/Contacts.zip /system/app/Contacts.apk
(or try [B]mv[/B] if [B]cp[/B] doesn't work)
reboot
You shouldn't need to rename it, you can do it all in one command like I did.
Thanks david1171 for the code for on the phone and the compliment
INCLUDES:
Only the dialer

first off, that button looks amazing. like i will have to use it later on today it looks so great.
i don't know if these terminal commands will work (i will test them when i try this), in the recovery console (with file on root of sdcard (also you should tell them to change the .zip extension to .apk)
Code:
mount sdcard
mount system
cp /sdcard/Contacts.apk /system/app/Contacts.apk
(or try [B]mv[/B] if [B]cp[/B] doesn't work)
reboot
i will report back later today on this.

Nice!
Hey, thanks for the compliment! I updated the OP with your code.

sweet. i thought you had to rename the extension if you were pushing it, cool learn something new everyday

Sounds interesting but, can anyone up a screenshot?
Pleeeease.

How to?
Anyone know how all the themers are making screenshots? I'd make one if I knew how... And ya, I searched. Maybe my -fu isn't as good as it should be??

if you have the sdk and adb set up you can use ddms in the tools folder of the sdk or you can get screenshot off of the market. one is free, the other isn't. i have both but use ddms because i can save the pictures directly to my computer and i find it a little easier to use in most scenarios

Ya, I have the sdk installed now, however it's not allowing me to take the screenshot in ddms. Framebuffer failure? Anyway, that's fine. I'm going to work on another version as well that kind of looks like a gold/bronze typewriter thingy with similar font...anyone is welcome to make a screenshot or suggestions. I don't think I want to make a whole theme, just a better dialer then the ugly stock one...so I added a mock-up of the dialer. Why spend a hour fixing something when you only need 5 minutes in paint?

There isn't really anything...Victorian about it. Or Steampunk, for that matter. It's just a script font -- and a lot of black.

My thoughts exactly.

is there a way to make it look like a Rotary Dial phone? i think that would make it look pretty interesting.

Re-read OP
Like I said above, it will eventually look like something from an old typewriter. Sue me for wanting to release it early. As for the rotary dialer, that's wicked! However, not possible without making a whole new app. *shrug*

this is very interesting, good find.
I never heard of this before. This will allow me to build a digital clock widget to give my fadetoblue theme more of a TouchFlo3d look. Thanks!
Thats sick works well but if you have a theme installed it wont read the launcher from the theme so the stuff in the Luncher.apk from the theme wont show up clock, google search bar and stuff like that. Great idea and if themes can be installed with this its going to be bad a$$.
just bought it
Lovin it!
One of the best apps so far!
if you download the apk couldnt you just replace and theme the elements in that and upload it? or is that not something that could be done? i understand that you couldnt redistibute it, but for your personal use no? i opened it up and it looks similar to the launcher...just a thought

well it would be easier if the developer got together with Jesusfreke and make it into a big update and incorporated the app as the home screen for a small donation type thing? I would pay again for a update like that then the sky is the limit with themes for this.
yeah i updated the elements like in the normal launcher by the way and resigned the whole app. people would have to know how to put the elements in the app themselves after purchase... not for amateurs. would like to see someone pull off some way to do it easily though.
so randum, does that mean you already have a theme for it?

And as far as pirating the app, thats gonna be hard. Its not the actual update.zip your modding, its his apk which could prove to be troublesome. Maybe there's a way to get everyone together who has purchased it & they can share the themed versions??? Just an idea

well i signed the demo with no problem, but i am having a problem with the paid version... cant seem to sign it correctly
there should be a meta.inf file in it that you need to remove to resign it so it takes the test keys. Why not just send baron a pm and talk to him? One idea would be to give him the themes to release through his website.
I asked him about whats been talked about here this is what he said.
Quote:
My first implementation of themes will be to look on the sdcard for the assets in the same directory structure and filename that they are found in the dxtop.apk.
Something like this: /sdcard/dxtop/theme/res/drawable/clock_dial.png
or
Something like this: /sdcard/dxtop/theme/res/drawable-land/tray_handle_normal.png
Then i asked him this,i hope it could be done.
Quote
O.k i got you so this would solve the problem i love this app bro very cutting edge, hey i have another Q: off topic if you can make your app look for those folders could a app to install themes be created using this format you have come up with or maybe even have it install a whole update.zip?.
If this can be done my whole world will change.

I would love it if we could change themes without having reflash everytime.
He said he going to try to make that happen but he needs to work on it more.

[GUIDE] An easy way to convert .PNG to .raw565 for custom boot image [Windows]

So today I really wanted to make a custom boot image for my phone. I looked on the wiki, lo and behold, the piece seems to have a complex side to it for some. Maybe it's easy for some, but difficult for others. Well, I was one that had difficulty.
I don't have a linux setup, so I attempted to use a Virtual Machine to run it. SUCCESS!!!...but wait...ImageMagick is being a pain. (I swear to god I have never been so frustrated in my life) I spent hours trying to get it to work, but failed in the end. So I researched new ways of converting my PNG into a .raw and then a .raw565/.rgb565. I searched the forums, tediously, but to no avail. Well I found something that all windows users can look forward to. It's a very simple 1 step conversion of a PNG to a rgb565/raw565 file.
For those who are interested, here are the steps:
Things you'll need:
Paint.net (a simple image editing program) Download here
rgb565.dll (can be found on the same website, i'd suggest getting the self extractor) Download here
Fastboot (you can get this with the Android SDK) Download here (setup can be found in the wiki or in places around the forum)
Steps:
1. First you want to create your picture. It must be 320x480 resolution, and saved as a .PNG file. (Use your favorite picture editing tool. Photoshop, GIMP, Paint.net, etc.) Name the picture Splash
2. Once you have your PNG picture made and in the correct resolution, load your picture in Paint.Net.
3. After the picture is loaded, go to File --> Save as.... Name your picture Splash and change the file type to rgb565/raw565 and save to your desktop.
4. Find your picture on your desktop, right click it and click Properties. IMPORTANT!!! Make sure the picture file size is 307200 bytes exactly. (If it is not, you could end up damaging your phone, so DOUBLE CHECK).
5. Make sure you have the Android SDK set up with the latest USB drivers.
6. Put your picture into the same folder as your fastboot. (android-sdk-windows --> tools).
7. Once you reach this step, connect your phone through USB, and load your SPL. (Turn off phone. Hold the camera button + power button). Ensure the text on screen says Fastboot. If it doesn't, push the Back button to refresh it.
8. After your phone is connected and ready to use fastboot, Open your command prompt (cmd. Start --> run --> cmd). Type fastboot devices. Make sure your device number appears there. This will tell you if your computer is reading that your phone is connected to fastboot.
9. Make sure the path the command prompt is going to, is your SDK/tools folder. (cd android-sdk-windows --> cd tools).
10. Once your command line is aimed at the SDK tools folder (This is the location of your picture remember?), type the following:
fastboot flash splash1 Splash.rgb565 (if it's raw565 type that. the extension wont matter as long as it's the right format.)
fastboot reboot
NOTE: If your fastboot hangs while trying to put the new boot image on, remove the battery, and reload the phone's fastboot and try again. (this happened to me, and after doing this it worked)
Well there you have it. After completing these steps your new boot image should appear. I hope this helped the windows users out there (I know after figuring this out, it helped me a lot.)
If there are any Questions, please post them, I'll do my best to answer them.
Thank you and Enjoy.

You do realize there is a convert to g1 program, that allows you to select your picture, and then to convert it, all with just 3 clicks of the mouse....so your method is pointless lol.
Fair enough on the little program that's available. Didn't realize the 3000 thing could convert.
Also my method isn't pointless. It is an accurate and usable method.
What you deem as better or worse, does not make it absolute.
If others choose to use this or the program, both options are there for people to choose.
I can't say I appreciate your prudish viewpoint, but thanks for the heads up...

Ok, let me rephrase it. There is the easy way (with the program that everyone has been using for a while) and the hard way (your drawn out method).

lol your blunt smugness is humorous to me for some reason.
is this program in the forums? I guess that was the link I was referring to.
See, in my OP, I stated that I searched a lot of places in the forums looking for a method, and didn't find one. So can't blame me for trying to help after finding a method that isn't pre-programmed. I was certainly proud of myself >.>;

Well I'm sorry you feel that way. In my post about the no replies, I stated that I was worried because there were so many views and no comments. It wasn't a complaint. Your angry criticism is only making this worse. Had you acted more mature in the matter, rather then trying to tell me off because you let your own bias rule you, it probably wouldn't have gotten to this point making you so upset.
I personally find you hilarious. You get so worked up over such a trivial matter. Let it rest, you made your statement.

True, but the three other tutorials for that all have included the outdated "fastboot.exe" that doesnt work with the new drivers... and it took me while to figure that out, [noob syndrome] because they all only had instructions on how to work with the files they provided, for older drivers.
I may put together a tutorial including the easy picture conversion of the other tutorials and this version of the easy flashing of the new splash using the SDK tools you already have.

change sms styling

hey all, ive known how to do this for a while and just thought id post it, but i know how to change the stiling of the SMS window
1. go to a registry editor and search "iframe_style.css"
2. the value should be /windows/iframe_style.css
3. change it to /iframe_style.css
4. to go total commander or file explorer and go to the windows directory (enable hidden files in file explore, and its gonna take a while to loadr) and look for iframe_style.css
5. copy it to the main directory /
6. now navigate to the iframe_style.css in / and change it to iframe_style.txt and it should open in word
7. you have to have knowlege in css and html to be able to read the file, but its fun, you can change fonts and colors and etc.
8. save the file, but press no so it saves in .txt again.
9. now change the iframe_style.txt to iframe_style.css and restart the device
post any questions or discoveries below. ill upload some of the files ive made so you guys can try em out
nice! Definately gonna have to try it.. if my tp2 works ok tommorow. lol
That's why I love windows mobile, forget apple.
agreed! did you check out my post on your thread?
Try this one!
Heya guys, I have a different styling for SMS too, been using it for a while now and it is way better than the original style ^^
Just unzip the attachment and copy the 3 files to /Windows, restart the SMS App and you're ready to go! Have fun with it
I have not created this idea by meself, but copied it from the TAEL ROM for Touch Pro 1, and edited it o that the images look nicer and blend in with the design!

"How to" Edit Swype Keyboard

First off, I take no credit in doing this, this is meant to help people if they want to try it. And I am only making thread at request of others members.
If you break your phone I am not responsible, if you have questions though I am more than willing to help as much as I can but this was the first project I did.
There may be easier ways to do this but this is how I did it. If there is, feel free to comment the other ways!
I would like to say thanks to maddoggin and illinois08 for there help in getting mine figured out!
Requirements:
winrar (this is what I prefer but you can use any of your choice)
Original Swype.apk (included in thread and swype needs to be already installed)
image editing software (I personally used gimp and coreldraw) and experience in them.
common sense
What you are actually changing:
To change the look of swype is fairly simple, meaning all you are changing is some .png files in the apk itself to whatever you want them to be.
The only downside is trying to make sure the letter spacing is correct. That is the reason I used coreldraw first to do the spacing and then the background with my flames was in gimp.
First Step:
Using winrar (7zip, etc) open up Swype.apk (I placed on desktop for easier use).
The first folder should say assets. Open up assets. After you open assets, there should be a folder named keyboards. Drag the keyboards folder to desktop.
Once you open the keyboards folder, you will see multiple image files. You have found the files we need to edit! Make sure every png stays in there even if you decided not to edit one of them.
Files SwypeRef_LS_Blue_Shifted_WVGA.png (LS is landscape keyboard) through SwypeRef_PT_Standard_wBlue_VGA.png (PT is portrait, most important for me)
I only edited 4 of the images because these are the main 4 I use and don't use landscape. If you wish you can edit all of them or just 1 .
Second Step:
Using Gimp/or CorelDRAW, you will need to make new images that are 480x320 pixels. At this point, it is totally up to you to get the placements correct and make the image how you want it displayed.
I personally imported the images I was editing to Corel, and basically started a fresh one on top of it so I could get the letter placements correct. You need to make sure when you are done that the image is still 480x320 with the letters not being the end of the size. I made an outline that was 480x320 and placed the letters inside and exported the image that way so it stayed the right size. I would also try to keep the images around 50 kb because mine are around 90 and you noticed some lag when it switched between pngs...
As you are exporting your images, make sure to name them their appropriate names (shifted, capitals, lower case, etc.) which makes it easier to rename them after wards.
Third Step
Once you have all of your images done how you want, I would place them all in their own separate folder.
Now, you will need to open the keyboards folder from earlier and match the images you edited to where they go in "keyboards" and rename your files to the appropriate name and delete its' counter part. Meaning make sure only your image is in keyboards with it renamed to what mode your png represents. And make sure the folder contains every png it did before. They all serve a purpose.
After you have removed all the old pngs and replaced with your renamed images, you will need to open Swype.apk back up and go to assets-> and delete the original keyboards folder. After deleting, move your keyboards folder with your images under assets.
Swype is now edited with your keyboards how you want them!!
Fourth Step:
The only thing left is either adb push Swype.apk to system/app or place on sd card and install with astro,ez,etc.
Another way that is very easy and the way I do it. If you are using a theme, open up on your desktop with winrar. Go to folder system/app and place Swype.apk in app folder. Now flash from recovery and your new and improved swype is ready for action.
I have attached what I made mine look like. Some people may not like how basic it looks and how some of the things are not sized or off correctly but I like it and it works!!
I also added a picture of my custom dropdown which I made in Gimp. If you would like to know how to do one like this send me a PM.
And if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I may not be the best at explaining things thoroughly !
I have been getting a lot of PM asking how to edit swype ...
Are my instructions to complicated? If so, let me know and I will try to revise them a bit and sorry!
Nah it's cool man. I mean i get it. idk about everyone else. I haven't got around to trying it yet but this lets me know what to expect.
Ok well that is good! Thanks for the reply...
I hope that post didn't come off as rude, if you sent me a PM I more than willing to help everyone! I just wanted to make sure it wasn't bad instructions ...

Thanks man! Like I said since this was my personal one I didn't go all out and it was kind of sloppy but it suits me fine.
I was thinking about it but not sure what people would want! If some people gave me some ideas of what kind of background or font, I would have no problem making it for them.
Now that I know how to do it (with your help) it won't be as painful as before, just time consuming.
I'm not a user of Swype but I certainly commend the effort that you put into this. It came out great.

(How to) Make a LiveWallpaper like this ?

Hi all,
I see on market this cool wallpaper:
Sun Rise free
I'm using it and it's really nice, but there are (IMHO) a lot of things missing.
such as:
- always the same background during morning/afternoon/evening
- only those few birds
stuff like that ..
I would like to create a new one starting from this idea, I studied java but I'm more network administrator, programming is not my best!
is there someine who could help me?
UP ???
I just can't find a good "how to" to make a nice live wallpaper, guess it's not so hard, i could do a Flash (swf) pic. and use this as background
sorry this is probably not the answer you're looking for..
i've only been java programming for about a year, so my skills are still fairly week but i have been for awhile wanting to make a live wallpaper, only I haven't seen any particularly straightforward tutorials..good luck, you can message me if you need help with something and i can try and help you...i need to familiarize myself more with the android api
I found these 2 Links:
http://mobile.tutsplus.com/tutorials/android/creating-live-wallpapers-on-android/
and
http://www.vogella.de/articles/AndroidLiveWallpaper/article.html
take a look, maybe they can help. I'm not much of a programmer myself so I couldn't tell you if this is exactly what you need but it looks promising.
thank u guys I really appreciate your help!
first im trying to study from developer.android.com "how to programming"
then maybe i will try with live wallpaper :/
Perhaps you can check out the source code of the live wallpaper and familiarize yourself with how it's structured.
decompile the apk file and take a look inside
I've never opened an apk if not for replace images, can i really do that? cool! ill try then!! thanks!

Yes you can decompile an apk file.
You'll need a tool called "apktool" and if you haven't already you need "Android SDK"
If you then decompile an apk file you'll get access to all the .xml and image files.
Yep i've got all the necessary, sdk - eclipse with adt and everything works.
i "installed" apktool and tried to decompile this livewallpaper.
it worked!
now im reading all the xml files in it - i found out that there's a very little bit of java in android apps and lot of xml! -
btw .. im stuck finding how to change wallpaper's properties using the clock to switch from morning - afternoon - evening
that's what i would like to do more 'cos it sucks to take the phone at 9.00 pm and see the sunshine or whatever... ??
can i upload the decompiled file ? i think there will not be problems since this app is free
