Custom Folder Icons - G1 Themes and Wallpapers

Hi, I'm looking for a way to customise the icons for folders created on the Home screen. I realise that we can change the png files but that would change all folders, what I want is to be able to customise each folder I create separately.
Currently I'm using Apps Organizer to do this and while it works well it is slow to load the shortcuts inside.
I don't want to run a home replacement so does anyone know of a simple and effective solution to allow custom icons for each folder? (I think this is something that Android should have by default)

Is that a no then?

thats an option i would be glad to have in my device!
please suggest it to irrenhaus to aplly it in his AdvancedLauncher
in this thread

I will think about this, it shouldn't be much work . But no promises yet

That's great to hear, it seems like a pretty basic function to me and I can't see why Android doesn't just support it to begin with. I hope you manage to conjure something, it will be much appreciated by many people I think

[APP] Hide Folders

I've noticed recently that there's quite a few people asking how to hide folders on Windows Mobile. There's a few applications out there, but they're either completely overkill (they do a million more things and are therefore massive), or they're not free (or a mixture of the two).
Since I wanted this functionality myself, I decided to write a very simple application to allow me to toggle the hidden state of folders. This application should be considered in beta state, but it works fine for me so far. It's not fancy in the slightest, and I have no plans to make it look anything special, but if I get enough response then I'd put some time aside to "tart it up" a bit.
I'd be grateful if people could let me know of any problems with it. It's targeted for WM 4+ (I have 6.1), using .Net 2.0.
All that aside, I hope some of you do find it useful.
You can download it here...

I was recently informed about a review for this application, which can be found here...

Thanks for the great review Ella
Cheers,
John.
Hi,
Works well on my Kaiser (See my sig for the rest of my specs).
Nice little app, I use Resco and Total Commander, so I don't have much use for it, but I'll keep the CAB just in case.
I like the loading when you expand the tree rather than loading all folders at the start.
Ta
Dave
Cheers for doing that Dave - I don't know about you, but I'm always relieved when things work for others!
As for the loading when you expand the treeview nodes, I had to add that because it was taking about a minute to start the program, if it was getting the whole directory structure. The Windows folder alone was taking around 40 seconds!
Anyway, thanks again. I appreciate the test and report
Updated to v1.1. I've sorted the folder lists alphabetically, and I've added an about screen, mainly to acknowledge the guy that made the icons I used for the application.
it didn't work. i set a folder in the storage card to hidden mode bt the folder is still visible! when i use file explorer!
i have asus p320

Hi.
It sounds to me like you've got 'Show all files' enabled. In File Explorer, go to Menu and make sure 'Show all files' is unchecked.
Cheers.
hide folder working fine
working great in htc 3450...
but make sure in file explorer u unchecked show all files....[]
Work well on Xperia, thanks
Great piece of app. Really appreciated. You need to uncheck "show all files" & you will have your files hidden. But the problem I faced is mainly with the Touch commander 2.51 which doesn't have any of this option. I tried this on Resco explorer & files were hidden. So overall w/o touch commander it worked like charm.
Just an humble suggestion John
WHy don't you create an app that could lock files, I mean that could just rename them with ascii letters which can't be opened unless provided password[which would rename the folder again.] I have searched for this kind of app but couldn't find one so your release would be a hit with this function. Thanks allover.

Yeah but still doesnt work successfully. if you use a photo viewing program like resco photo viewer hidden files are still viewable. SKB mobile safety suite locks well, cant see it but takes forever with large files and you need alot of phone memory.
Im sure someone must have a program that has the best of both worlds???
How do i use it???
Hello and thanks for the cab....How do i hide a folder in Htc hd?The program just lets me go through the paths and when i find the folder i want to hide it has to options ...on the left "about" on the right "exit" It does't says anywhere menu or hide.....Any succestions?
Thank you in advance.

thanks 4 the app!
works great on ipaq 600
if it is not to hard can you make the app popup as a combination of hardware keys?
2 make it simple one can select from predefined combination
like: key1&key4 ,key1&key2…. (from settings/buttons)
or if it is not to hard adding read key combination option (in the app settings)
anyway thanks
Edit: to not let it woke in the background the combination will be entered after taping the apps icon (the apps icon says )

Found a program called Hide my stuff v3.6, works much better than this one and the SKB. it truly hides files or all files within a folder, no frills so is very fast to hide, unhide, you can even edit or beam files whilst its in a hidden state etc. found it by chance but works very well.
thank you veru much ! I will try that!
appreciating your help . it is working fine for me
Works great on my BlueAngel..thank you man!

works great!! Thanks
and if could add up some function like that, it would be perfect!! Thanks again
You need AEButtons to assign software to hardware keys. I've never used it myself, but lots of people use it very succesfully.
Hope this helps
Im glad to say that the hide folders works great. Does anybody know a way to hide files (not folders) under the My Device for a WinMobile 6.5? I want to do this to clean the screen and not to accidentally delete files.
The only files/folders I want to see when I open File Explorer are:
My Documents
Storage Card

Why has no one worked out how to add desktop widgets!!!

xda-dev is one of the best forums ever and the people here are amazing i just can't seem to understand why no-one has worked out how to add desktop widgets, i mean i know were waiting for the sdk to allow us but with some of these great minds surely we can make do it i mean whats holding us back come on jesusfreke . Also i know its adding to launcher.apk i know its difficult but surely if we can add multi-touch we can add desktop widgets
excuse me btw for being a bit of a **** i just cant seem to get why we can work it out
all hail Jesusfreke lol
I think the problem is they haven't released the source for widgets yet. I could be wrong but i think that's what i read awhile back.
That is exactly it. Google / Android Devs haven't yet released the tools or code required to do so. Once it hits, I expect the widgets to blow up though. Tons will be released overnight if you ask me.
i suppose what he's saying is, although we don't have the source code for widgets, do we actually need it? could someone find a way to add 'hacked' widgets without it? there must be a way round the source code issue
If it could be done, it would have already been done.
First widget I make is going to be a flashlight, tip calculator right on the desktop, that way I can delete all 96 apps of both. (true reason I moved apps to SD)
hehe.... all i want is a weather widget..... seriously......
but i really do think there is a market for a tip calculator! esp. here in australia where you don't normally tip!
ive been thinking of a myfaves widget ....that way you dont have to go into the app itslef to see them ...that way you can actually just move the little cricle thingy right on the page
They'll get around to it when they do. If you want them that bad, why don't you make them yourself?
Thats what the whole response to this thread is, we can't make them yet. You typically can't open a lock without a key.

Unless you pick the lock. But I think its been made clear that's not possible or people would rather wait for the source code than waste so much of their time trying to crack it instead of building more apps!
Hope this comes soon. aHome is lame (its a G1 not an iPhone) and so is only 3 default widgets, only one of which I actually use..
Also if go like dxtop web page. Andorid peps said not to make anymore widgets becase to do so creats some kind of law that could leave ur phone open for attack. And also I don't the battery life on the g1 will suport widgets very well. But I could be wrong.
Theres are huge concerns from a security standpoint when it comes to opening up the ability to add 3rd party widgets, thats why it hasnt been released yet. The new cupcake branch added more secure widget support.
Per http://betterandroid.wordpress.com/2009/03/15/open-home-faqs-where-are-widgets/:
"Home runs with quite a few permissions, most notably the ability to
read contacts. With your implementation of widgets, any application
can offer a new widget that, once installed by the user, will silently
use Home’s permissions to achieve whatever it needs. For instance,
a widget could be easily modified to read all the
contacts and upload them silently to a website. At no point the user
will know that the widgets will make use of the “read contacts”
permission.
The second security hole is the ability you give the widgets to spoof
any other app. A widget could for instance find shortcuts on the Home
screen and change their Intent or attach a different click listener to
execute something entirely different. This way, a widget could for
instance execute a fake Email app and grab the user’s password and
emails. A widget could do much more too since they have access to all
the information stored in the Home screen UI.
These two very important issues are the reason why widgets were not
implemented in Android 1.0. We need to implement them correctly to
guarantee the privacy and safety or the user’s data.
As your application currently stand, I would strongly advise you to
disable the widgets support until you come up with a secure
implementation of widgets. You have customers who paid for your
applications and it would be really bad both for them, you and Android
if a malicious widgets started taking advantage of these security
holes"

[CAB] Android V1.0

I've downloaded and got annoyed with going through FE evertime i wanted to play so......
Ive made it in CAB Flavour and here it is!
http://www.filefactory.com/file/af36a0h/n/Bones_Android_V1_0_cab
Also creates a shortcut in programs list...
Its pretty buggy tbh not alot works,If you let the screen timeout it crashes but still, it is running.
I take NO CREDIT for this all i did was simply make a CAB with a shortcut.
It automatically installs to storage card to save on device memory.Just like in the tutorial.
All it does is really bypass having to go through your phones folders to run it because if your like me im always changing from folder to folder AND im lazy
thanks, but dont work full screen,on top is some kind of small keyboard
Its not full android, search the forums for information on andriod V1

My Blackstone thread

After using x amounts of hours searching so many threads for different ROMs, themes etc i finally got to a point where im like "okay thats enough"
And now after im finished with my "style my phone" project im kinda thinking that there should be a "my phone tread" where everyone who wanted could post pics of their phone with links to all the apps/stuff they feel makes their phone rock. (also add a short install guide for less advanced phonebrains)
So here is My Blackstone:
Whats on it:
-EnergyROM i love this ROM. its Fast, nice and smooth
(for those who are not familiar with installing ROMs, its very easy. Just sync your phone and start the instalation from your pc)
-HDwall Ive used this to enable wallpapers on all tabs.
(it creates a cab. file. Transfer that to your phone and install it through file explorer)
here are mine backgrounds (Girl WP.png - View attachment 207188)
-Fingerkeyboard comes with lots of skins and language packs. You need the WVGA cab.
To make this app start after every soft reset you need "sip change" (install it - set delay to 50sec)
-Clock I love this one.
install the clockfix if you get the pixel error.
this clock also removes the calendar function on home page
-Tabs. The one i use is "TesalatMulticolorIcons"
thanks to those who make all these great Roms/themes/apps! I was actually about to sell my phone because of how it looked but now i love it
Please feel free to post your phone with a "whats on it" list so we can all compare apps and discover new stuff. I think this would make things so much easier for all those NPG (NonPhoneGeeks) who stumble into this site looking for ways to improve their blackstone.
OR maybe not.......

MotoBlur editing.

Hello everybody,
So these days I've been interested in theming MotoBlur since I had PS skills and wanted to put them to use since being 17 and with so much free time I said it might not be THAT hard.
However, **** happened.
Finding out those pesky MotoBlur apps wasn't that hard - found it rather easily after checking up a system backup. But finding out the MotoBlur apps wasn't the problem - the problem were the apps.
This is how a simple .apk file (MotoBlur Phone app) folder looks like:
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk125/secretalex125/untitled.jpg
See that little thing there? Yeah, you're seeing right - that is the Motorola FlipFlop (or how it's named) phone. But God, why?
Don't ask me; ask Motorola. This may be the reason why they ended up making a striped version of their newer phones' skin/OS updates' skin.
Not to mention these images come up with .xml files. Now, as a dumb idiot with relatively limited text editing (.xml / .ini / whatever coding files) knowledge, but still a basic one enough to know not to screw up with the position of some text, I know that checking up ALL these files would be a damn hard task. Not to mention editing them properly. However, I'm in for the images. And I'm somehow sure that some of these files are pretty much useless. So they should be deleted. But then, when you have 2 apps called "BlurContacts" and "BlurPhone" and notice both of them feature pretty much the same images in some folders, you know you're screwed.
But this is only the foreground idea. The background, the immense sea of files is what is annoying. How could someone be able to create an entirely new skin? All that comes in my mind is that he must be a masochist.
So questions pop up:
1. Did anyone else try to skin ALL the files?
2. Did anyone try to remove files?
3. I know that out there is only one more GB skin. One more. But is it any better?
4. Are there replacements? How easy is to replace these files? Would simply removing these Motoblur apps make my life easier and revert me to classic Gingerbread?
4. I think there's more on my mind, but it doesn't come up right now.
All in all, I don't like what I'm seeing.
I was able to theme almost all motoblur apps when I was on ms2ginger rom, so it was the gb version of defy. I didn't remove any of the files, but yeah it takes some time to understand where goes what.
