Why can't we have Froyo yet already???? What's the hold up? By the time, we get it... 3.0 will be around the corner...
Yours doesn't have it?
Yep. I have it

I'm not talking about hacked custom roms.. I'm talking about offical release from HTC. I want Froyo that is fully function including 4g
you are lucky you didnt own a Hero then. It was outdated they day i got it(two days before launch). it came with 1.5 i believe, 1.6 was already out and 2.0 was announced a few weeks later w/ the DROID. THEN 2.1 one came out and Hero owners were STILL waiting. finally 2.2 was announced and a week or so later they pushed 2.1 to Sprint Heros.
long story short, dont expect it to come out anytime soon with HTC's track record. i would recommend rooting and installing cm6, it runs great sans 4G

"without 4G"
HTC has announced 2.2 will roll out by December. If you want it that bad, i suggest trying out CyanogenMod. I never had 4G coverage around me, but after playing around with it, i would never go back to a Sense-based 2.1 ROM.

Cyanogen's mod, while amazingly awesome, has problems. There are missing features, inconsistencies between what works and what doesnt from user to user, and it's AOSP.
HTC has to make EVERYTHING work for EVERYONE all the while porting over their sense UI. All of their apps and widgets need to work on Froyo. It needs to be stable. This sort of thing realistically can take months to perfect. So don't be butthurt when you don't get it til Christmas.
I personally can't stand Sense... or any other UI put on top of android. But as long as I can root and boot up custom roms, I'm a happy camper.
uhh isn't google suppose to be the one releasing froyo since they are the makers of android os not htc? i thought htc was just the hardware
google only releases it for nexus one
they then release froyo source then hardware makers like htc and motorola use the source along to build their versions with either sense or blur
Now I can see how so many people are confused.
This isn't a simple phone, it is complex and there are many hands in the cookie jar. Please do some research about your phone, and who makes what, and you will realize it is far more complicated than "Froyo is out, how come my phone doesn't have it."
I'm very happy with the Froyo I already have. I see 4G as a totally useless feature due to its extreme battery drainage.

Then thinking you can come into a development forum and post a question that should be common knowledge to anyone tinkering at all in Android is just lazy.
If you switch phones every two months, then what do you care about Froyo, or even learning what your phone can do anyway...
When I make a purchase, I find out what I am buying, if it suits my needs, what limitations it has, what support it has etc. I call that making an "informed" decision.
I don't just walk into the story and buy the pretty one without knowing the above. Or else I would have an iPhone and wouldn't care about what I can do with it.
This was a lazy question posted by someone that hasn't done any reading about their phone or they would see what has to be done to get an Official Froyo build.
basically,
Froyo (aka: Android 2.2) has been released by it's maker. it's maker is Google. HTC gets licensing to install the OS on it's phones. now, when HTC first started working with Android...android was..well...it was lacking...it was lacking a fair bit. so the HTC devs put some 'Sense' onto android to make it something that the nerds can bring to their corporate executives. (cause if we nerds can't sell the boss on how cool this is...then i don't get to play it.) meanwhile, Google is trying to turn Android into a serious market contender. and its going up against some very mature code. this has a side effect of causing Google to release v1.5, v1.6, v2.1 and v2.2 rather close to each other. this is not a sustainable pace of release...it will piss everyone off. thankfully Froyo supposedly will be able to bridge us over until v3.0. at which point google has said they will proceed with a much slower version relase of Android.
Sense is not needed like it used to be. however, it'll prolly be around for a while. htc has said they will release froyo onto the evo but that is not a priority for them...the evo is yesterdays product so its more important getting the upcoming devices ready for market. perhaps the HTC/Sprint sanctioned Android 2.2 will be released by the end of the 4th quarter (or so they say).
on the good note...CM6 is rather nice. even without having 4G running yet. but really, how often do need to turn on the 4G radio? and they will get it working before long.
i must also agree w/ Bielinsk on this one....

Check out Avalaunchmods Froyo ROM with Sense. He released an RC for it today and hopes to have a couple of little issues fixed tonight. He has a Sense and no-Sense ROM available. He's put a lot of work into them and i'll be checking out the Sense ROM for sure tonight. Probably bounce back and forth between the CM6 that i'm using now and Ava's Sense ROM.

maybe because all the phones i buy are android os...and you really have way too much time on you're hand to flame someone over such a little thing...all i asked was "isn't froyo suppose to be released by google and not htc" if you don't wana answer it then leave it alone...noone wants to hear your history crap...Noone wants to know how you read every nutrient fact before buying milk or read every little thing that's on the charging adapter...maybe you have time all the time in the world to do that and all the power to you but not everyone is like...we actually have a life and don't learn the history of every little thing we purchase...and fyi forums are made to ask questions and to inform each other...so if you don't like someones question instead of flaming simply don't read it and move on.

Well, I read that they already have a pretty good port for the HD2 already (Which is great for that device since a working Android port would really breathe life into it), and I would think that it would be even easier to port to the Evo simply because they are both designed to run Android.
However, I'm not sure there would really be much to gain by doing that, but maybe i'm wrong.

The new HTC Sense looks to be the grand prize from the dump.
I would like to know what dev is going to atleast attempt to port the new Sense or the ROM as a whole.
Mainly, I just want the new Sense.
I honestly don't think we're going to get close to a Desire port until the CDMA or world phone version is launched. It will be a real ***** to port the GSM frameworks to CDMA. It might be possible to get the new sense ripped out of it, but from what I've seen Sense is embedded in both the apps AND the frameworks.

We had the Nexus One AOSP ROM, so I don't think it would be impossible.
The fact that the HD2 can boot Android, WinMo6.5, and Windows Phone 7 makes me mad and jealous.
I don't know how many of you there are out there that would like to have the ability to run anything but android on our phones. I agree, Android is superior and is amazing and all, but I get bored sometimes and before you tell me to flash a new ROM... in the end they're all Android. Why not have the ability to flash different OPERATING SYSTEMS onto our phone? I mean hey, if the HD2 can do it so can we!
I understand there is a great deal of work involved in all of this but I'm sure there are others out there like myself who would enjoy such a feature. I created this thread in order to bring those people together so maybe we could find a few developers interested in getting this going.

I've been following the dual boot project and it's definitely something I'm going to make use of (Running CM and a Sense rom... what's better than that?), but at the same time I know there's a handful of people who are interested in running winmo or windows phone 7 on their EVO. This is an amazing piece of hardware and I think it'd be great if we could figure out a way to make more things work on it.

The dev support for the HD2 is superior to the EVO because of its worldphone (GSM) capabilities. Although it would be awesome to have the choices, I doubt it will ever happen on a Sprint device.
It kinda sucks because I feel like the phone has so much potential if it were running on more OS's

Never deved on an android phone before, but I'm a linux admin, and I love doing custom hacks on these things. If I can be of help, let me know. Trying to see how to get the ball rolling on setting up a CM6 version for this phone right now. I'm pretty sure with the limited hardware that this phone has, CM7 would be a huge overkill -- if it would run at all.

Well, you caught me. I actually think it would run fine, but it is much easier to use the same kernel and just mod everything else. You can run 2.2 on 2.1 kernels, but you can't run 2.3 on 2.1 or 2.2. So, with that said, it's much easier for me to just take a current image, strip out the bloat, and give everyone a new version based on 2.2 that works out of the box than finding all the missing kernel modules for 2.3 and building it from there.
In short, I'm lazy, and I want to have a newer release out faster.
haha oh ok no sweat! Sorry wasn't tryin to call you out...just curious. Anything that can be done would be great! Hope you get something going soon!
I was thinking of maybe getting the flipside on te insurance program (from a backflip) but it seems like you guys are worse off than us. i cant seem o find source code on moto's site... do you guys know where it might be?
Any progress on a CM7 port? I just got my GF a flipside since she can't deal with on screen keyboards....and she previously had a backflip with CM7 lol
so I've been visiting recently on this and the cyanogen mod forums and it doesn't look like anyone has hit gold yet, or have I missed something somewhere and all the cool kids are having fun with their flipsides and I'm out in the lurch?
My wife too got this phone because of the keyboard...If no development comes soon...I think I might just try and sell it to whatever sucker wants to buy it and then head on over to Canada (eh?) and purchase a G2...
maybe soon...
Motorola is beta testing froyo right now. We may soon have a valid froyo image for the awesome development teams to work with.
Well, it's officially been two months since I got my G2. What else is there left for me to do?
- I've already got SIM Unlock, superCID, and radio S-OFF.
- I've already got CM7 Nightly 92 w/ Pershoot's latest Gingerbread kernel.
- I've already got backups of Virtuous, Virtuous G-Lite, and CM7.
- I've already installed Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and set up lxde.
- I've already overclocked and underclocked my CPU.
What else is there left for me to do? Can I dual-boot between different mobile operating system platforms (i.e. Symbian^3/Maemo 5, Windows Mobile, HP webOS/Palm OS, etc.)? Can I do ANYTHING else other than flash a ROM/Kernel and overclock? Or is this it?
You have done pretty much everything there is to. The next step is start cooking up your own stuff. I'm guessing you all ready have adb working. You can download apk manager http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701 and start doing some themeing of your own or port some themes for your favourite roms.
And if your feeling really adventurous have a go at building your own roms, there is a really easy to use rom kitchen here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
If your computer is up to it you could try building cm from source have a look at the cm wiki http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Building_from_source

On the xda app so can't see your Sig. Siulmagic did do a droid x port http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051229 so you can give motoblur a try.

Windows Phone 7 is a closed platform, so its pretty close to impossible to port it to other platforms, in my understanding. I believe the only reason HD2 can run it, is because MS actually developed a WP7 version for HD2. As far as the old Windows Mobile versions, its obsolete and a pile, and the only reason to run it, is if you need to run some legacy software. Similarly, Symbian is all but dead at this point, as Nokia moves to WP7.

Not too familiar with the Blackstone, but probably just a matter of developer interest. The Blackstone seems to have pretty similar specs to my old Touch Pro 2 (in terms of CPU and memory), and the TP2 does run Android. Although the TP2 Android project was pretty slow and laggy when I last played with it in December or so (but it looks like a lot more work has been done on the project).

Even if you could load other OSes onto it, so what? Would that radically change your smartphone experience, and what you do with you phone day to day? Not really.

Well for starters you could settle down and control your compulsiveness to jack with your phone. Android is probably the best OS out there, no reason to port to an inferior one. You are the first I have heard that has wanted a port to all these other variances. Most others are happy with the Android OS and like the custom ROMs and ways we can customize our devices already.
My advice to you... find a well paying job, squander all your money with buying yourself a brand new phone every month or two without contract. Maybe port all this other crap yourself. You seem to complain a lot, so intead of doing that, make your own ports and ROMs. That oughta make you happy

I don't really know what you are expecting, its a phone. how much more could you want it do to? compare it a iPhone, then you would be limited. If your desperate for a Touchwiz or Motoblur Rom, port it your self. The reason why these ROM's haven't been done is because there not rated very highly particularly Motoblur.

dude, what else do you want to do? I guess that's a good question to ask. There are literary tons of stuff to do with your phone. There are numerous ports with this phone you can try. You wanna play dual core games like samuarai vengeance 2 eventhough you don't have dual core? Go right ahead with chainfire3d. You can theme your phone how ever you want with icons, colors, ANYTHING. What other operating system allows you to do this? How would you be better off with ANY other OS? You can easily flash themes and such to make it looks like touchwiz, or motoblur. you can even make it look like honeycomb for goodness sake. Fool around with the UOT kitchen and cook up some fancy looking themes are icons.
I suggest you do a little searching around on xda, OTHER than the G2 thread because there are tons of stuff that apply to alot of phones that aren't just found in that device's forum. Its dumb for you to judge the one OS that actually ALLOWS you to do whatever you want to it.
The end.

Giving my opinion does not make me a know-it-all, and nothing I said implies that I think I know more than you. You're going to come in here throwing around foul language and calling people names, and still expect people to give you ideas?
You seem fixated on just loaded different OSes, and just don't want to accept the answers people are giving you. People have already gave tons of suggestions. But you aren't interested in listening.
MotoBlur and TouchWiz are trash, anyway. Not much more than cosmetic changes to the launcher, and other general theming. You can easily mess around with those things yourself, as several others have already suggested.
