Hi, I'm trying to remove all those annoying pre-loaded aps that VZW put on my phone. I attempted to run the unrevoked3 root + flash thingy and it got hung up part way through - phone still works, and the phone IS rooted. I installed a terminal emulator and saw that all the pre-loaded aps only have "R" access which is why I cannot remove them.
I've tried using "chmod -r 777 <program>" and I get a "failed" message. I've tried the simple "rm /system/app/amazon*" and it tells me it's a read-only file (still). Can anyone help me? I've got some experience with linux and command line, but am still not very good with it and this is my first time attempting to root/hack my phone.
I've got the HTC Incredible running the latest 2.3 gingerbread.
Try to get BUsy Box and see if you have super user access, cuz since you said it hung up half way, chances are your phone did not root completely
Im pretty sure it has been rooted. I downloaded an emulator and when I type "su" the command line goes $->#. Someone else had this similar problem but they wanted to install a different ROM and I just want to remove useless aps. That being said I wasn't able to make any use out of his solution.
I should also point out that a super user icon is now in my aps window. I open it and its just a black screen, possibly because I haven't given anything root access yet?

try installing rom manager from the app store and see if it ask you for permission
Ok, I installed that, but it didn't ask me for permission...is there something I have to adjust in the April itself?

if it didnt ask for permission, that means your phone is not rooted, as Clockwork recovery needs permission to use, reroot? or ask in the incredible forum?
Yeah, guess I'll try to reroot. Not sure why the unrevoked3 root didn't work. Will try and post any details about failed tasks during the root process.
Thanks

I've seen this thread before and since forgot about it. Thanks for posting it. I assume in order to do what they say in the thread (meaning run the adb shell), you need to root your phone
?
Sorry for taking so long to report back...busy time of year!
As it turns out, my phone actually WAS rooted despite running into the previously posted comments. I was attempting to start over and in doing so, downloaded SDK, JDK and proceeded to mount my phone using adb. All I had to do was reboot my phone in recovery mode and then mount /system. Voila! I have since moved all the useless bloat to a disabled folder...
My next question is this: How do I enable tethering and mobile hotspot?
Thanks for your help.
Wireless tether for root users is a pretty baller app. I show it off once in a while at work when someone flashes their ipad around. The speed is solid.

Is that the name of the ap? Or how can I enable it? I've been told that the pre-loaded mobile hotspot still will not for rooted phones and you need to download a 3rd party ap?
Just searched the "wireless tether" in the market and found it...it says it requires "Netfilter-enabled kernel" What's that mean? I'm still running the stock ROM (2.3 gingerbread). I don't know that I want to run a new ROM....
I downloaded and installed both "wireless tether" and "barnacle" just to try out both. I can view my mobile hotspot on other devices, and I can even connect them to my phone. On the iPhone (4g), I can get what appears to be everything but youtube. On my laptop I can't get any internet signal...
In either tethering ap, I cannot view who/what is connected (i.e. my laptop or iPhone). Any ideas? Are there limitations to these aps?

I have Barnacle for my Wi-Fi tether and it tells me who is connected to my phone (there should be a "Clients" tab). Do you have any encryption enabled?
I password protected my wireless hotspot and then used both the iPhone and laptop to connect to it, once they connected I tried viewing who was connected to my hotspot in both barnacle and the wireless tether and neither of them would say another device is connected.
Hi Everyone!
I have been given a Defy MB525 with Froyo installed
Apparently O2 and Motoblur don't like each other 'cos I can't locate the phone or do anything else using "My Motoblur" as Motoblur wants Microsoft Explorer and I have Linux on my computer.
I want to manipulate files and basically get full access to my phone using a nice friendly Linux GUI, but apparently I need to root the bloody thing.
I know this question has been asked before. The thread below is an example.
http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9456771
The thread mentions Z4root as an answer.. It doesn't exist anymore.
It then talks about adb and pushing files into the phone.
In the most part this worked
The bit that didn't was "adb push exploit.bin /data/local/tmp/exploit.bin"
It doesn't exist on the zip file attached..
It did however have "rageagainsthecage-arm5.bin" instead
I changed the name to exploit bin in the vain hope that it might be the one and continued the instructions.
It obviously wasn't the one as :
a) it wouldn't come out of the program and
b) I got the $ sign instead of the # sign, which meant I was not root.
This was confirmed when I did the next step in the instructions and got permission denied.
After a switch off and on again (the phone) I cannot even get get back into the phone using adb. It just comes up "error: device not found" even though Linux is showing it as a directory.
So! What next?
Yours in anticipation
Fitchie
I use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765 and work very fine with froyo
You can look at the stickies at the top of the forum before posting, see "Defy all-in-one beginner's guide", understand that it probably refers to you and most likely contains the answers to any beginner questions you'd want to ask, open it, read it in case you're serious or just look for "rooting" word if you're not.
Well, you already missed the first part and posted the thread, but you could still do the rest.
Given that you're running Linux on your PC, I'm a bit puzzled - I'd think that the described above is expected from someone with unorthodox OS that is likely used to searching for various guides.
Using "SuperOneClick" is the best way to do Root on your Defy MB525.
I've done this. .. hope it'll help

My goal for doing all this, rooting and controlling the device, is two-fold:
First, to get additional functionality out of the Kindle Fire; I want the Android Market apps available, and a better interface, but at the same time, I want the pleasure of Amazon Prime; I want to be able to de-root and enjoy the streaming video.
Second, to understand a new thing, even superficially through its actions rather than through studying it in depth; it is fun to find out about a device.
So far, although I have rooted the Kindle Fire by following the steps in kinfauns' excellent tutorial, I have failed in both of my goals, and the reason is interdependent on both of their failings. By not understanding fully, I have failed to get additional functionality... and by not getting additional functionality, I have failed to understand what I have done!
When I tried to install the Google extras through KFU, permissions were denied. So I sideloaded Google Play, it started, and I created an account, and everything worked until I tried to download and install an app and it shut down. and now, it doesn't restart, "The application Google Play Store... has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
But how to get OTA Rootkeeper? I downloaded it on my phone, and then sideloaded it to the Kindle. It installed, and started, but instead of the list of options under status, like shown in the instructional videos, all that is shown is a button to "Protect root".
Ah. My lack of knowledge prevents my understanding. I'm certain that sideloading is leaving something behind on my phone, but of course "certain" isn't the same as "right", seeing as how "certain" is a feeling. Would an extra mind help? Is there an extra mind willing to help?
Thank you!
Solved. Thanks, ndpete!
Would it help to uninstall and reinstall? Just shooting at the sky here, but what the heck.
Can you please help me with the OTA root keeper ! I have a kindle fire that I rooted and I installed the OTA root keeper to be able to watch prime amazon video . Allthough the apk seems to be installed correctly , when I open it , it doesn't let me to check teh root permision granted and the protected su copy available. Also doesn't have the unprotect root button ; on the status is stated the superuser app installed
Pleased help me , nd please use lay term people as I'm not technically savvy
Thank you in advance
Ok so I have a problem, I would think most users have this too: The max volume level being too low. So I went ahead to search google for help, and downloaded "Ultra volume mod" now what I'm supposed to do is to overwrite the "default_gain.config" but when I do, it says permission denied. So I tried another method, manually editing the code. Now it justs says that an error occured when I try to save it. I did a little digging on the internet, and found out that my system is apparently read-only, how do I change that? Oh yeah, I'm currently using ES File Explorer, most people said theres a button to mount something but I can't find the button, maybe thats the fix to it? I have the latest updated version of the root explorer and I still cant find the mount button.
Well, while you're here can you help me with another one? On game hacking apps such as GameCIH or GameGuardian, either right after I grant root permission, it says "error: root denied" or it says nothing and when I try to change the code, nothing happens. Thanks for helping.
Device: Samsung Galaxy Note II GT-17005
Root: Yes
OS: Android Jellybean 4.3, Stock.
Any other info thats needed? Please say so, I will do my best to provide them. And please don't post complicated stuff, the most I can do is read simple codes and edit them, such as the volume one. I cant decode, read complex codes or create codes, if theres anything complicated, please try your best to explain how to do it. Thank you in advance for your help.

Open ES file explorer hit menu button ,scroll down, check mark root explorer ,slider will turn blue, then click extreme left of root explorer you'll get a pop up with few options, click on Mount R/W then another pop up comes up and you'll see RO and RW columns, and 4 rows of options.Select the RW column for each of the row options. That would mount your system to read and write files just like you are doing right now.Once you change your default_gain.conf it will ask you to replace it with existing one (you should make a back up of your original one on the sd card) then replace it,long press on the new file click on MORE at the bottom right then Properties then you'll see permissions as RWX-RWX-RWX- and Change next to it.click on change and you'll see 3 rows and 3 columns make it read as RW-R-R basically selecting first 2 columns for first option and only the first option for 2nd and 3rd row.Click ok,exit the es file explorer and reboot your phone. I am attaching images below so you can get visual help as well (my options differ a bit under es file explorer since im not running TW ROM but concept is same
Note: Root is must (I see you've mentioned you are rooted)
Thank you so much for the help, it worked perfectly, now my volume is just as its supposed to be. Thank you for your help, now i just need someone to answer my second question.
2nd one sounds like an app issue now you have confirmed it's not a root issue. Probably don't work on 4.3. Think I remember seeing groans from game cheaters about apps not being supported.
Oh okay... well, i tried out the mod, forgot that 1db more is 3 times a loud as the bd before. Almost busted my cheapass earphones. Also the static noise you hear in idk, clash of clans during start up increased by at least 5 times. Switching back, luckily i took your advice on making a backup. Thanks guys, really helped me. In the shortest time of any other forum too.

Ya many of us eat , breathe and sleep on xda and love to help out people cause we were also once in your shoes so I know how it feels when something doesn't work right ,the anxiety levels sky rocket at once and panick sets in.
Edit: You might want to quote people when responding to someone in particular so he/she gets notified otherwise they might not check back on the thread and your future questions might be left unanswered.Just a suggestion
Well if its just thanks i think they would like it if they didnt get spammed on email. Anyway i fixed the static problem, seems like the old speakerboost app i tried but did not delete was jealous of the mod, uninstalled and mod works like a charm.
[ROOT]SGH-I467 4.4.2 ATT with 360-super-root & fix mediaserver battery drain
I bought this piece of crap from ebay and though it would be just like N5100 and I was wrong. This tablet is lack of support and could not even be rooted with those one-click root software, nor with a stock image to create an odin rooted system image. And since there was someones said they could root this **** with KingsRoot, I tried every version of it and failed every time.
---------------Enough Complaining---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a magic software from China saved me, it is called 360 super root, if you heard that company "360 safe guard" or "qi hoo" you should know they are reliable.
worth to point out is, this software uses it's own superuser and will have issue with some of the app does not recognize it, but if you really want to fix that, you could try gain root with this software and total uninstall it and install your own superuser. (360 will block other superuser app while installed)
and yes it is fully Chinese, please find someone can read Chinese if you face any problem.

---------------Fix MediaServer Draining Battery-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh yeah after rooted your device, if you had the same issue with me that the "mediaserver" process keeps running and draining your battery life, I found a simple way to solve it WITH ROOT ACCESS, from this link : geeknizer.com/fix-android-media-server-scanner-sdcard-cpu-battery-drain
This method requires you have an adb shell running on your computer, device usb debugging on, and connect device with your computer, then run adb shell, follow these commands to disable media server process.
QUOTE :
adb shell
su
adb shell
su
pm disable com.android.providers.media/com.android.providers.media.MediaScannerReceiver
Please reply me if you have any questions.
What does this mean? Looks the same as kin root. Doesn't work.
