Newbie question: getting CAB files from exe

Hello,
I would like to know how can I extract the .cab files from an exe file that is an application installer (the exe should be run on the PC).
I think that the active sync saves a copy of the cab files, but I am not sure. If using activesync is the only way, it's fine, but I prefer a method that does not install the software first and it does not involve activesync.
Thank you,
Eran
Well it really depends on the application, there is not always one answer that fits all things.
You can try using a program like WinRAR and right click on the PC exe, you may see an option to extract the files, if you do chances are you'll gain access to the cab files. Things like the ROM updates work this way.
Sometimes this method doesn't work. Then you may need to install the program on your PC. You'll need to look on your C drive for the folder the program creates, generally this will be with in the C:\Program Files\ folder or the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Activesync\ folder. This folder can be easy or hard to find.
Another method is to set Pocket File explorer to "Show all files" (you'll need to tap and hold on the white space at the bottom of the page, and select this option from the menu that pops up.) Then go to \My Device\Windows\AppMgr\Install\ and wait for the file to appear here when you first install it. Note that in WM5 you are generally asked if you wish to install the program, DO NOT ANSWER THIS QUESTION instead go to pocket file explorer and look at the \My Device\Windows\AppMgr\Install\ folder your cab should be here, after it is installed it will be deleted from this folder and some times cabs are partly deleted in the install process. (it maybe necessary to install two or more programs at the same time to get a working copy of your program cab file.

I can't open .zip files on my phone

Hello everyone, here is my question there is a couple of cool apps but they are .zip folders and when i download them and put them in my phone it says "there is no application associated with this file. run the app first and then open this file inside the application". But i don't know how to run the app.
Please help me, it is driving me crazy!
Thank you
Perhaps if you could be more specific as to what kind of applications you are trying to install. You may need to install a driver in order to open said apps.
did you save the file to your storage card? if you did then open it up there first, then run it on your phone.
Did you download a .cab or a .zip file to begin with?? Sometimes your PC will identify a .cab file as a 'Compressed (Zipped) Folder'. (1) If you downloaded a .cab file, then just move it to your device or storage card, then execute it from there. (2) If you downloaded a .zip file, then you will need to extract (unzip) the file on the PC first, if it contains a .cab file then follow step 1 above.
Sometimes program files are zipped up for transport (e.g. an RUU packages), those files need to be extracted on the PC and then executed from there. Hope this helps!

Putting new programs / cab files onto the pro 2?

So, I used to have a tytn2, and played with it a bit, so I am familiar with how to put cab files on it, etc.
I'm stumped right now... because I have my new pro 2, and when I download the program, it is supposed to show up as a cab file, when I unzip it. But actually, when I unzip it, I just am seeing several files, such as one ending in xml, and then another one or few ending with 000, or 001, 002, etc.
From what I remember, when I used to put the cab files onto my tytn2, I would just unzip whatever the program was, and I could see a cab file there, which I would then transfer to my device and then run.
What in the world am I doing wrong here?
Help would be super appreciated!
problem solved
problem solved, im an idiot. for some reason my system is showing the cab file as a zip file which wants to be unzipped. so i've not realized that i've been double clicking cab files, and then winzip is showing me the insides of those files.
= )
So I take it you just changed the file name from zip to cab?
Either that or he has the file explorer on his computer set to hide known extensions. Cab files are recognized as compressed file formats by many handlers like 7zip. Which is why he might have confused the icon for a zip file if he couldn't see the file extension.

how do i install programs like this?

i39.tinypic.com/vzx0l0.png
using active sync i hit explore, dragged it all over to a folder.. on the phone i went to files explorer. hit _setup and opera loads up a blank white screen?
You unzipped the cab file. Transfer the cab file to your device and then select the cab file using the file manager on your device.
that was what was contained in the rar file i extracted..

You downloaded the "rar" file to your PC? Did the file actually have an .rar extension or was it just identified as a compressed file that winrar can open? Could it have been a .cab file, but perhaps you have "Hide extensions of known file types" enabled on your PC so it doesn't show as a .cab file?
Cab files look like compressed files (because they are) but they're not supposed to be extracted. It should be copied to your phone and then opened/run there to install.
I think that maybe what the OP did is installed winrar on the phone, and let it get set as the default handler for .cab files.
labelthief, if that's the case and you have winrar or another unzipping app on your phone, you'll either have to uninstall it or figure out how to get it to give up it's association with .cab files.
EDIT: after re-reading the first post 3-4 times, it seems possible that you just extracted the cab's contents on your pc first, then copied all those files to the phone, but I can't tell for sure. If that's the case, just do what MCBrian said and copy the single .cab file to your phone and click on it to run it from there.

Yeah, I assumed that's what he did -- he said he "dragged it all over to a folder on the phone", which means that he extracted it (creating "it all") on the PC first.
That's why I think it's not a good idea to have "Hide extensions for known file types" enabled on a PC. If you can see that a file ends in .cab or .exe then there's no confusion about what to do with it...even if winrar thinks it should handle it.

Agreed and agreed. My first read took that as "dragged it on over..." so...maybe more coffee on the weekends before posting, hmmm?
You're absolutely right about the file extensions too...I always set them to be be visible on ANY PC I work on, or even have to troubleshoot for others

noob ?

I just got a new app from work in a .exe format.
can i put in a zip and flash it or do i have to change it to a apk file
I tried to put the exe file on my sd card and use astro to install it put it won't
I also tried to find a app to change exe to an apk with no luck
Thanks for any help!!!
.exe are applications designed to run on windows. Renaming the file wont change anything. It has to be an app written in Android code or it wont work. DO NOT flash unknown/unsigned files in recovery (I dont think it will let you) but if you manage to it can brick your phone.
DO NOT flash unknown/unsigned files in recovery
Thank you god for that answer!!!!!!!
