My SDcard dissapared - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi,
I was syncing my sdcard with WindowsMedia player and then my TP2 or windows can't find it any more??
any ideas??

Usually when you connect youe TP2 in USB Storage Mode to the PC, the SD card is unmounted from your TP2. It should be remounted once you disconnect the TP2 from the PC. If it is not, soft-resetting the device should do the trick. Did you try a soft reset?

I have this same problem, and a problem it is, because it will not allow me to transfer files from the pc to the SD card, because it is disappearing from the windows explorer.
Or is there an other way to transfers files from the pc to the SD card (without taking out the card)

My old phone used to do this. I can usually clean the contacts and it will work again. I use a rubber eraser to keep from damaging the contacts.

I have a strange issue with my 4gig sdhc- after about 3 to 4 minutes card unmounts itself in my tp2 and isnt visibile anymore... any solution for this??

I had the same issue with a 8GByte card that used to work fine for months in my touchpro but was only usable in my touchpro2 for a couple of minutes. Never found the reason and had to buy a new 16GB instead, which worked fine eversince.

I had the same problem and found this solution:
Make a backup of your SD card, format the card in FAT32 and put the backup back on your SD card. Probably the problem will be solved!

not very practical though... i have had the same problem and hope its a card issue and not a hardware(phone) issue.

As for the disappearing card, you may try this solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4403947&postcount=8
MeCry

The Tilt is famous for the SD card disappearing, or more often, not showing up at all, when there is a filesystem error, I suspect the TP2 would be similar.
Run a filesystem check on the card. Put it in a card reader in a PC and scan the volume or whatever terminology Windows uses.

Well, I will give it a try, but something like the memory card should work right out of the box. If we weren't informed or aware of this site it would affect our opinions of the phone. The basics should always work well without mods. It's so easy to do and, from a hardware/software perspective, a minimum requirement.

Micro SD Volitility

Hey guys,
I have a 2gb SanDisk Transflash Micro SD and have been having some serious stablity issues with it. Ever since I first got it, it would lose a file or two randomly. Not a big deal, except that it was a picture of my kids once - that sucked.
But anyway, this morning the entire card contents (all 1.58gb) I had spent days compiling was inaccessable! The card still shows that it is full, but none of the files or folders is visible in either file explorer or in my card reader on my laptop. FYI: I had eight programs and 7 games installed on it as well as some music and movies. I don't want to reformat the card and lose all that, but I am afraid that this is my only option. I also don't want to keep using a card that is a timebomb!!!
Has anyone else with an Artemis (or any other unit) had this issue before and been able to rectify it? Any advice would be much appreciated! I'd love to hear that this is just a defective card and not a problem with the Artemis frying cards!!!
Same issue here
I have the same with my xda orbit, I have a 2GB microsd and once in a while suddenly I cannot access the data anymore, the folders and files are looking corrupt.
What helps for me is, to take out the memorycard, insert it again and make sure it is tight in the lock. Then, when you switch it on again, the files should all be accessible again.
I was thinking it might be a problem that the card is not tight enough in the lock so it would lose the contact, so what I did is that I used a small pice of plastic a little thicker than the lock of the sim-card to give higher pressure on the memorycard under the battery. Until now it works fine for me, but I do not know if it is a solution yet, I will have to wait some more days to see if it really works like that.
These problems do sound like a hardware issue. I doubt its the PDA or Windows and too many people have problem with too many different sized cards to be the card. It does sound like the card is suffering from an intermittant contact, I would try as above and make sure its a tight fit.
I,ve same issue. New HTCP3300, new SanDisk 2Gb micro. Installed set of application and then in one day found on the card folders with garbage names (even could not delete them). Reformat the card and install everything again. In couple days same probllem - programms installed on card don't work, and I can see strange folders on the card. Suddenly I found one not changed name on card with stored attachments of e-mails (more than 500) - long opening - then opened and after return to root I fount everything in place. Everything OK.
Does somebody has any idea what's happend?
How to fix it?

I've had the same problem in my Trinity with a Kingston memory card. Finally gave up and tried a different brand of memory card and everything seems to be ok now. Definitely sounds like these two issues are related. On the Trinity forum the general consensus is that is may be a firmware problem causing compatibility issues with some memory cards.
I had the same problem a few mins ago, Luckily after a reset of the phone all of my files were readable again so I would imagine rather than the card being corrupt, maybe some allocation table gets messed up.
fingers crossed that it doesn't happen again!

Hi spangelsaregreat
Same problem with the T-Mobile MDA Compact III. Comes standard with a 1GB micro-SD card from T-Mobile (Sandisk).
The complete Benelux Plus map directory was corrupt. Other files/directories on SD looked ok.
Couldn't delete the corrupt files, had to format the SD card in the MDA Vario-III.
Greetings, Ben...
I've had my MicroSD only a few days so far but I have not encountered this problem yet.
I took the pre-emtive action of cutting a small square of the MicroSD packaging (that awful lethal theft-proof stuff) and placing it on top of the MicroSD-caddy before I clipped the sim-caddy into place.
My previous attempts to put it directly on top of the MicroSD, underneath the metal clasp that holds it down, met with failure as - contrary to what I've read elsewhere - the clasp is actually a caddy into which you slip the MicroSD before closing- just like the sim... forcing it down on top of the MicroSD probably wouldn't do it much good.
Anyway, so far so good- I can only recommend you grab some nasty plastic shell packaging and butcher it, worth a try... surely?
Corrupt Sandisk MicroSD
Hi all
I have been at the receiving end of this too. I have had this memory card for almost a year in my qtek 8500. I had everything from business data, cv, client logs, tom tom, and more importantly loads of photos and vids of my baby boy.
The card did go weird and prevented my o2 orbit from booting up properly, it just locked up. Took me a short while to figure out that it was the card and after i removed it it booted fine. I put the card back in and presto all working again.
Just 10 minutes ago I checked out my tomtom and ¨no maps¨!!! After examining the card on my mac, pc and card reader it's screwed. All data gone. just a few 0 bite files and daft characters. Nothing left at all. I am very gutted about this. All business data backed up etc so no worries there but the photos guys!!! I will never get those baby pics back! :-( very upset about it and it's definitely the pissing orbit as no other problems in any other handset for almost a year!!!! :-(
Any solutions to this as I cannot possibly trust this machine to store my important data anymore. I would like the ability to be able to sync my public folders in outlook then i could at least drop data into there while out on the go for backup. I'm not a keen believer in having to plug my pda in my laptop all the time to back it up as I have over the air email etc and i want to avoid all that pap!
STILL TRYING TO GET TO TERMS WITH THIS LOSS :-(

I am starting to think it may be microSD. I recently got an 'M3 Simply' game programmer for the Nintendo DS Lite, it uses microSD. I was using a 2gb because I feared feeding it to my HTC and a 1gb should be enough, then it suddenly became unreadable and unmountable. It would not format either.

Has anyone tried a data recovery program like R-Studio. It can recover files off formatted hard drives and I have used it successfully on my SD card when my Uni messed it up, similar sounding problems.Might work.........
I did and it didnt work. my corrupt microsd was unmountable.
MicroSD
Hum, having the same here...
No solution yet?
I've just got the same problem with my O2 Orbit and a SanDisk 2GB MicroSD Transflash.
I've possessed the device for 1 month and it had been fine until a week ago. At first the problem was strange characters appeared in folder and file names. I reset the device and saw everythings back as normal.
But this afternoon Program Files and My Documents folders disappeared on the storage card. Soft resetting this time does not help. System still shows unchanged volume of used memory so these are definitely still there.
The former issue is also being discussed in this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285511, but I suppose they are the same. Apparently this is a systematic fault so O2 and HTC must have been notified. Hopefully a solution should soon be found.

expansion card disappears

Hi all,
I have had my touch pro2 (t-mobile branded version) for about 1 month now. I have come across a pretty weird problem. The device sometimes cannot see my expansion card, it seems to start randomly (4 times in last month) when starting an application that is installed on the card.
Removing the card from the device and placing it back in makes it visible to the device again. Even stranger is, if you then soft reset, the card is visible untill touchflo starts up (and probably starts accessing the card to get the music and pictures etc), the card then dissappears again.
I have till now not been able to determine the cause of this problem, and mostly after hard resetting a second time the problem dissappers for while and the card functions normally.
My question is, has anyone else had such a problem and do you know of a solution? Also do you guys think this is a hardware or software error (or maybe the expansion card is faulty?) and should I return the device to t-mobile to try and get it fixed? I am hessitant to return it, as the error seems random and i cannot reproduce it on the spot everytime.
All advice, comments, suggestions are welcome.
Thanks
Mine dissapears when i turn the screen off while playing music using Nitrogen. Uknown as to why, made a post but no results. Just gonna deal with it for now.
hi, thnx for replying.
I came across your thread, but I do not use nitrogen. Hope you find a fix for your problem soon. It is very frustrating not knowing exactly what is causing the problem and how to resolve it.
Hello,
I've found that I have the same problem when I use the Album application. I've placed some pictures to the card and opened the folder with Album. It opens well, but when it generates all thumbnails, it tries to write them to the file album.cache. It writes an empty file and the SD card disappears from the system.
sounds a lot like what happens to me, I have noticed it with the music tab from touchflo..when it tries update the library by scanning the card, the card disappears. But it does not happen often. For some reason a hard reset sometimes helps and sometimes does'nt. When it does help, it works for a random amount of time (longest has been 2 weeks, then I had to hard reset for a non related prob, and it gave some probs with the card again)
Guys,
This is normally down to a corrupt file/files on your SD Card.
Try backing up the entire card and doing a full format.
The problem is as you say, during the creation of the databases the software is getting to a corrupt file and this causes the SD Card to drop.
All full format of the card and copying data back on will resolve it.
Cheers,
Beasty
i have none of the problems described above with my sandisk 2gb card.
maybe you should check whether you all got the same card.

hi Beasty,
Thnx very much for your reply..I have formatted the card and so far so good. It's kind of hard to fully comfirm that it has been solved as the error occurs randomly. (or maybe it is solved and the next time it happens the card is just corrupt again )
The card I currently have is a class 4 brandless one that was provided by t-mobile with the device. Do cheaper cards have a higher probability for corrupting then the brand name ones? In any case I will be buying a Sandisk at the end of the week, been wanting a class 6 anyway.

Not sure whether its the same problem, but (as I've mentioned in another thread) when I fully charge my device with the power off and the card installed, it fails to recognise it when I restart the device.
I do not have the problem if I charge with the device on, or if I remove the card prior to charging.

SD Card keeps becoming unavailable

Has anyone else come across the problem where the micro SD card seems to just stop being available to the phone? I'd say maybe once or so a day, anything that reads data from the SD card, such as the music app, stop working. If I try and play a song, it just hangs and does nothing.
I tried a search and somebody in the G1 forum had a similar problem but it didn't really contain any conclusions on what it is likely to be.
Anyone else had this issue? What is it most likely to be, the phone or card?
Thanks.
yeah I've had this occasionally with the camerea and seperately the 3d gallery software I installed.. have no idea why
Yea I've had that a couple of times actually. Just have to turn it off and on again and its ok, but its annoying.
Yeah, rebooting does sort it out, but it's starting to happen every day now, sometimes a couple times a day. If it's just a dodgy card or whatever I'd rather get T-Mobile to sort it sooner rather than later.
hmm a dodgy card.. included with the phone, that sucks
Backup your SD Card data and then try formatting it to see if that helps.
Cheers, will give that a go tomorrow. I might ring up T-Mob tomorrow anyway just to make them aware of the issue I'm having.
If I format it, will I be able to copy all the contents back on to it?

Yes, back it up to hard drive on your PC, then after you have formatted your SD card, copy back the contents from the hard drive to your Removable disk (SD card).
I've had this a few times Took the card out, reinserted and restarted the phone. Seemed to fix it, but it is annoying.
Sorry I can't remember when and how I know this.
But backup the card on your PC
Then format it in/with the phone and this should solve the problem I believe
I had killed one of my 16 GB card in Nexus one.
I found a problem that if i use Win 7 or Vista i must remove the device by using safely remove the USB device. Since now am doing this way i never had any problem.
Word of warning you could simply kill a card if you just remove a device.
My first thought was it has something to do with the USB connection. If you safely remove device in Windows - the phone 'prepares' the SD card.
I was having the same issue. I connected to the PC and mounted the SD card. I performed a disk check on the card and it found some errors which it then repaired. I then unmounted the card
I haven't had any issues since.
I formatted my card yesterday and haven't had any problems so far. thanks for the advice.
I ended up replacing the card. All of the previous advice didn't work for me or if it did it didn't last. I reckon there was a bit of a dodgy batch supplied by SanDisk.
~Since replacing I've had absolutely no problems whatsoever, it used to happen at least every 48hours. Very annoying when you try to take a photo and it tells you there's nowhere to save it.
I've been having problems too when taking pictures, which is really annoying!
And i'm not sure whether this is a related problem or not, but it could be...when trying to receive a file over bluetooth it sometimes says it doesn't have permission to receive the file or something along those lines, could this be the SD card playing up?
I'm on T Mobile, would they replace the SD card?
Not sure if it is the same reason, but I had all kinds of problems including the one you've described.
I'm on Orange, they told me that my SD card wasn't covered by Orange Care (the orange phone insurance). I said I didn't have Orange Care anyway and that surely it comes under the 12 months manufacturers warranty. They said pop it into the shop which is a bit of a drive and would cost me more than the value of a new card to get there.
At the time I wasn't certain it was the card as I didn't have a 2nd to try it with. Given my problem was very intermittent I decided the bother of going into the shop - it wasn't worth it for a £5 card. Now that I've bought a new one that works perfectly, I'm going to head into the shop with the old one next time I'm passing. The problem is I don't really need it replacing now! You could always lie and tell them you've tried your friends card at home for a couple of days and it worked perfectly?! No harm in trying.

I hate to say it, but it will happen again. Have card reader or other phone prepared, just in case your sd card stops working totally

SD Card seems to be unmounting automatically...

Well, basically as the title says. This's happened several times to me already. Say I'll turn my phone on (from standby) I'll get a popup error saying that the backup was unable to complete because no SD card was found. Next, the music application won't load the songs because those're all stored on the card. Same for Photos/Gallery. When I go to ES File Explorer, the 'sdcard' folder reports that it is empty.
There hasn't been a pattern that I discovered. This just happened now when I woke up (phone left charging overnight; Wi-Fi & Sync enabled) and I decided to come post here. Happened again yesterday afternoon when I got my phone out to play some music on the way home.
Every once in a while, I'd get lucky and the files would show up by themselves, but the only fool-proof way I've found to get the phone working properly again is a restart, which takes several minutes to do.
I am NOT running any task manager (well, I was but when this problem started up I checked another thread which recommended to remove the task manager, so I did).
Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Do you know of a fix, or is it just me?
Mine's done this a couple of times, but I've put it down to the SD card not being quite pushed home properly. Worth taking it out and cleaning the contacts.
Nope, that doesn't work. I re-inserted it yesterday (contacts were clean) and this morning woke up with the same problem.
Please tell me this isn't just happening to me, cause it'll be a right pain in the ass to have this repaired (sending abroad/etc).
Is the SD Card the one you got with the phone (4Gb) or another make/model size? Please include details so others can help more.
I have left the given Samsung Class 2 4Gb SD card in mine and I have never had any issues with the SD Card unmounting. This is not saying it won't happen, but for me it has been fine. I was going to upgrade to my other Sandisk 16Gb Class 2 that used to be in my Touch Pro, but will do that hopefully this evening.
So all I can guess is either a faulty card or some issue with Class/Size/Manufacturer of Card (if you changed from the Samsung one) ?
It's the stock 4GB card that came pre-installed in the phone. Phone's unlocked too, bought from Clove. If it helps/is relevant: when I loaded up the camera it gave an error saying something like 'no sufficient read permissions for SD card'*, maybe that'd be a clue to the problem.
*I can't quote exactly cause I've since restarted the phone and can't remember it word for word. If/when this happens again I'll post the exact error.
EDIT: There, it just happened again. Restarted the phone not even an hour ago, it's getting ridiculous. Anyway, the error from the camera reads "Unable to save file to SD card due to insufficient file permissions".
FWIW, when I go to SD & Phone Storage settings i CAN see the total and available space on the card. It's just completely inaccessible by the programs. Have also tried the 'SDMount' widget, did absolutely nothing.
Happens to me too but only when I've been letting go of my phone to put it down rather than placing it down, or if I have to drop it on my bed or chair quick.
Happened to me a lot too when I was using one of the lock screen info apps, to get my calendar info on the lock screen. Uninstalled and the SD card problem went away.

Never used that :/
I've uninstalled all apps that seemingly access the SD card and will start reinstalling one by one to see if the problem does come back. Only way I could think of.
It is happening to me also. The last 3 days is doing it at least twice a day , i have the desire almost one month and neved had this problem earlier.
And i though it was something i did.
i had the same camera permissions problem. restarted and havnt seen it again since. 4gb card that came with the unbranded device. no idea what caused it, could be any number off new apps etc :S
I've got the same problem.
I've already tried to reformat my SDcard, but the problem still exists. Another problem when the SD card unmounts, is the CPU usage. This rises to ~10% constantly. Probably cause of this are apps which are trying to write to my SDcard.
Still no solution found, maybe I'll try another SD card in a couple of days.
FWIW, I gave up on the stock card and copied all my stuff over to another 4GB card I had running around (straight copy) and it seems to be working fine now. Haven't had a problem yet, although it hasn't even been 24 hours.
Will report back if/when something comes up, and when I start re-installing the apps that I previously removed.
I wrote to HTC earlier yesterday describing the same problem, and I just received this reply:
Dear Mr.Matthew Thank you for contacting HTC. Maybe you mount it on the pc to copy nd paste something and you forgot to unmount it from the pc.. Are you using the inbox SD card? Tablet destroying SD cards?

In August, I bought a 128GB PNY microSD card. It lasted almost two months, and then the tablet started acting funny. It would randomly unmount the card, it couldn't find my music files, and apps I had moved to the card would just disappear. I assumed the card was broken, so I eventually replaced it with a 128GB Samsung card. It's worked fine until the other day, when it started exhibiting the exact same behavior. I haven't been able to fix it.
I've tried formatting them both, but nothing seems to work. Windows can see the cards and the contents, but it's not able to format either card - it reads them both as write-protected, even though they're not. The only thing I can think that might cause it besides my tablet is Link2SD. I use this to move the large app data to the card since I only have 16GB of regular space. Could this be causing it? I'm at a loss, and I can't keep buying new cards. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I regularly read this forum and this is the first time I've heard of an issue as described. I bought a a cheaper 64Gb mSD card and used it with my Tab S day one. I've never had an issue. Could be you just have been unlucky? Were your cards from recognized brands? I suspect that the larger GB cards have lower yields so you need to buy a better quality card.

I definitely won't rule out being unlucky, it's definitely in my blood. I just find it odd the exact same thing would happen to two cards, months apart and with different brands and purchasing locations. PNY isn't super awesome, but they're not garbage, and Samsung is fairly prominent.
Samsung phones and tablets are occasionally said to be sd card killers. The GS3 definitely was, killed like 3 cards with the same result as you got.
Sometimes I feel it also affects certain sizes of card. The GS3 ate 16gb cards, but not 32gb cards. So it's quite possible that a different size card may have a longer life.
Not saying this has any base in research, just my experience.

I am using a Samsung 64GB and Link2SD. Haven't encountered any issue so far. But on a related topic, I managed to destroy a 1 year old Sandisk USB drive yesterday while trying to format it as NTFS. Now Windows won't recognise it al all. It could just be that the flash memory had defects to begin with.
Does Windows make the bell sound when you insert your microsd, if it does you should be able to recover it, if it does not and you have checked the reader is working the microsd might be dead, if you have an sdhc adapter see if a camera or any other device will recognize the card, if it does format it in that device then see if windows will see it, I had an 16GB microsd a few years ago completely die when i froze while i was copying music to my phone, nothing would recognize the card after that it was totally dead, and i got a refund.

Windows does recognize the card, and I can see the contents of it and copy all content OFF the card. However, trying to format it just tells me the disk is write protected. I've done everything in my power to try to unlock the disk, including third-party programs and commands in the DOS prompt, but it's still write-protected. So bizarre!
I had the write protect problem on an card myself a few years ago, I downloaded an app that let me remove the protection and the card worked fine after that.
Does the write protection stop a camera from formatting the card, or only windows, as i said it`s been years since i had my problem.
Have you tried a partition manger app, I have used the one below for years, but i dont know if it will be blocked by the write protection as well.

I actually don't own a camera, the only things I have that take SD cards are computers and Android tablets/phones. I haven't tried that particular partition manager (Chrome won't let me download it - it says it's unsafe?), but the Windows manager and an HP one someone recommended both say "Failed to format disk."
I have uploaded the app i used, It years old so i most likely does not work but you can give it a try.

I would download partition wizard with another browser or force chrome to download it. Its a perfectly legitimate app which I've used many a time.
You need a low level format and partitioning software like that. Windows is useless on its own.
Delete the sd card partition, recreate and reformat.

I downloaded it through Edge, and everything worked fine. It even seemed like it was going to work, until I hit "apply". Then it sat and thought for a while, and told me there was an error with the format of the disk. Instead of trying to recreate 2 partitions, I tried to just see if it would format at all, and when I applied that change, it said it completed successfully, but the disk was still in it's former state - full of my files, fully readable, and definitely not formatted. I feel like this stupid thing is haunted.
So for this problem, can anyone give me an opinion on whether it's hardware or software based? Such as, do you believe this is happening because it's a Samsung tablet, or with a bug on their current Android version? I'm hesitant to keep putting cards in it, but I want to use my tablet!
Have you flashed or rooted your tablet? , are you on kitkat or lollipop?

It was rooted, but it was on stock 5.0.2. I used root to run Link2SD.
Link2SD only moves apps not music, so why did your music disappear, have you used any cleaning apps as they can delete files that you want to keep.

Well I had Link2SD moving all kinds of crap. It was linking games, books, comics, magazines...lots of stuff. My music didn't disappear - in fact, nothing did. It's all still there, only the tablet can't see it. My computer can see it, I can copy and open the files, but I can't write anything new to the card, and I can't format it.
It sounds like your tablet is loosing the location of the files on your microsd, I would say Link2SD is at fault, I would give the developer a email with the problem your are having and see what they say.
EDIT: I just read the reviews of LINK2SD and some people are reporting files are disappearing.

@greycobalt: I recently had Link2SD card stop mounting the 2nd partition (formatted as ext2, that is used for Link2SD).
I'm using a SanDisk 64 GB micro SD.
1) Did you have this same problem? Were you able to recover your app files when you put the SD card into your computer?
2) Oddly enough, I can see the files on the 1st partition of the card, which is formatted to FAT32 and I can see everything on that in file explorer. You said that these even disappear?
3) What file format did you have for your microSD for Link2SD to be able to link apps to it?
