TP2 and playing video - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I just wanted to know how the TP2 handles video files (like movies).
I know I could download coreplayer but that will not work with watching tv/movies via slingbox and etc. Has anyone tried using their TP2 with slingbox or playing movies on it? What has been your experience?
Sadly the original TP was not great at this. I am trying to decide between the TP2 and the samsung Omnia II or omnia pro.
Any feedback/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I only have experience with Coreplayer.... I've watched several .avi files , with an resolution of 640x272 and a filesize of over an 1gb, and it played well!
Even the battery will hold on for 2 films. (flightmodus)

I downloaded DivX and was watching full screen, looks great, I tried both the mobile version and the PC version of the same video. I must say on the WVGA screen the PC version looks much better, just took up about twice as much memory on my storage card. Not to mention the audio was very clear and loud! Compaired to my Diamond the TP2 is much better. I also am running the D3D drivers so that may help..... Not sure though.....

Sling box
Hi there ,
I got a Slingbox HD-pro and it "working" on my Telus tp2 (stock rom) . BUT !!!
the main issue is the resolution of the phone 800x480.
the slingmobile app run at 320x240 or lower (16:9 and 4:3) (4:3 what that ? who still use that )
so until singbox give us a better "zoom" "strech" "even better 640x480" you lose almost 1 cm on each sides and 0.6mm top bottom of your tv picture.
I did not use any WVGAFIX3_BY_Cotulla.zip or screen resolution changer yet.
If every setting are setup to default it run at 30 fps went I got a good signal.
wifi run better
FYI,
(TP2 is not on the supported list of official sling mobile)
Best regards,
a happy sling user

I use the stock Telus TP2 without the enhanced video drivers with the built in video player and I play movies and they look GREAT!

Two months ... No new Base ROM Build

It is almost 2 months since Kavana sent us 080408. While Rick has given us many refreshes of content since, we are still on the same build of the WM 6.1 OS.
Judging from the frequency of updates for various PPCs and PPC Phones, and the lack of them for Smartphones such as the S620, it must be very difficult to get your hands on a Smartphone ROM.
Is there any likelihood of an update soon ?

no, im not using a dell laptop, just a bluetooth dongle that uses the toshiba BT stack.... of yes! of course! i'd like these steps. Just pm me or aim me (or yahoo) as not to flood this thread with instructions for this, since its not related to the reason for this thread.
I've got a dongle that I think uses the MS stack. I can sync via bluetooth in Vista 64 no problemo.

I've tried several ROMs and i just can't imagine how to improve on Kavanas ROM. Everything just works. Great Job.

Have you installed programs such as: TCPMP, CorePlayer, or the HTC Streaming Media Player? Each of these will play streaming vids (such as YouTube). As a matter of fact, Technology has posted several codecs in one of his threads which accompanies the TCPMP player. Last night, I watched a video on YouTube (via Excalibur) which was an uncanny resemblance to the quality on my PC! Crystal clear.

I see that you have mastered my picture pixel crystall clear video resoluton quality technology via the codecs pak for the 320X240 Screen(LCD Blue-ray HD)(LOL). You are the man, I know it works like a charm, now tell the other 50,000,000 people that, glad it works for you....!
Excalibur Screen 320X240 LCD QVEGA
With the Excalibur screen the video enhancement is unlimited with the LCD structure, thats why you are getting the super enhance video resolution quality, it accepts a digital signal better than a lot more expense device like the "Tilt"! Now to prove my point go to http://mobile.ardcorp.tv, this company broadcast in a high digital video quality for mobile devices (They Even Call It HDTV). This company offer the highest video resolution resolution quality for the Excalibur and several other devices. That's why I will never ever argue with people that will say, this is the highest video resolution you get for the Excalibur 320X240 screen, not true, that is a false statement as you can see for yourself...............!

Sorry for the delay, Solja! Tech will definitely point you in the right direction as to what to download from his threads. I've personally found TCPMP to be the best grade of quality when viewing streaming video (with the codecs in the thread I mentioned earlier). I didn't think it was possible for video to be as clear (and uninterrupted) on the Excalibur. I was using EDGE, mind you! lol Imagine what kind of quality a Wi-Fi connection would provide!

Video playback not smooth, and aspect ratio wrong

Just done an initial test of video playback on the Desire. Used an MP4 which was encoded at 640x480 fro my iPhone, and I know the file is good. This plays back jerkily, and is not wide enough on screen.
I have tried yxflash and playback is poor.
Can the Desire play back this format smoothly, and can it adjust the aspect ratio in the player?
What are the recommended file types/sizes/encoding for the Desire?
well i think the reason it's not wide streched is because the width of the video is 480px and the width of desire too so it cannot expand to the whole wide height since the video's height is 640 and desire's is 800!! my opinionas i see it
800x480. Perhaps use the HD Encoder tool found on the Blackstone forumns here. Encodes videos perfectly for this resoultion.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112
Tell us how it goes. Remember to use this from the source video, and not your already converted videos which are lower res and not widescreen
Thanks. I'll give that a go.
have you tried this yet? Any luck?
There is also DoubleTwist, which acts as an iTunes replacement. I tried this, but it is extremely slow at encoding video, although it does work, and the quality is OK.

It's a bit of a shame that video playback is pretty poor, Hero was the same. Don't know why HTC choose to do this everytime, make a fantastic device and spoil it by sticking in a inferior software.

I would use defaults. By default it's set to the correct resolution. Depends if you are converting a SD or HD, then choose from the two checkboxes to the left of the resolution. That's it. Just add the files you want to convert, choose a destination folder and go for it.
Let us know how it goes.

Video playback on Rhodium (Coreplayer?)

Hi,
ever since I upgraded to Rhodium I could not get proper video playback.
Basically no support for overlay.
I was/am using CorePlayer v1.3.6.Build.7427.
Qtv (Tytn II mode on) should work, but it never has. Tried all other video output options, didn't help.
Tearing is always there as is s*itty framerate. Getting ~65%/880kbps on a 1.3mbit video, mp4 avi 640x352.
Coreplayer was working perfectly on my Raphael and working good on the Kaiser.
This all happens on NRG roms (the only one I use ), currently on: Energy.RHODIUM.21903.Sense2.5.Cookie.May.22
Any ideas?

For me, it works sometimes. Try soft-resetting the phone
Speed Issues
Are other things slow on ur Tilt2 or is it just Media Playback perhaps you have too much stored on ur internal memory and it is slowing ur whole phone down. Just a possible solution...hope it works or hope that somehow ur problem gets fixed
I've never had this problem, except from tcmp that was cooked in... Never core player...
Sounds like a RAM problem, which would be why shutting off sense would fix this. Might need to look at all the apps you are using and disable some. Depends on whether you prefer using all the apps you have now, I disable all the tabs I don't use\need and usually have soft reset the phone a little earlier to clear the RAM.

RAM has nothing to do with it. It is related to Sense. Pure and simple. Nothing to do with apps, RAM, the video bit rates. It is Sense, WM6.5 and up, and Tilt2. I have done enough testing with both my TP2, TP, and Diamond2 to know it has everything to do with this combination. Sense on the TP2 hijacks the video drivers and unless you turn Sense off video will run choppy on Coreplayer or TCMP.
Coreplayer renders my (DVDFab Mobile mp4 ripped from DVD9) 1.87GB Avatar file ( 2 pass / 1519kbps / 29fps / 368x208 @ full screen) flawlessly on my stock ROM Tilt 2 running Sense 2.1.
Fluid, non-stuttered fast scene movements/changes with great detail tracking 100%.
It has everything to do with fine-tuning OS to have +60MB RAM free (60%) too. Of course, Coreplayer MUST be installed into main memory, not running from SD.
Something else is at fault if still having issues.
AVI container is terribly inefficient, try a pure .mp4 encoding video+audio together (PSP profiles work particularly well). Walle as same .mp4 also plays butter smooth, another tough file to lose fast panning jitters and momentary lags.
Reducing frame size greatly helps without perceptible crispness losses.
Hi
I too am having problems with playing video
on my touch Diamond 2 i just used to transferr over avi files straight from my pc with no conversion and it worked fine.
tried it with the touch pro and the video was well stuttery and unwatchable.
i am just about to load up tcmp to see if that is better
I did turn of sense but that didnt seem to make any difference.
I am also going to try the following conversions:
mp4 PSP settings
h264 original resolution
wmv
i dont really want to have convert every video but if i do what is the resolution to go for?
also i have seen people talk about adjusting the settings for core player but cant see any resolution settings on the player.
sorry to be a bit thick.
thanks in advance
Coreplayer is the best video player. For resolution I find 1/2 display 800x400 gives best compromise of detail. For example, see above post about Avatar, a particularly difficult movie due to high detail levels combined with virtually zero non-moving backrounds adding rendering complexity.
368x208 gave very good detail, full 16:9 image and allowed high frame per second and high kbps which are far more important smoothing out high-action rendering. Higher resolution is just too much to process without lags.
PM me for a sample of what a good conversion can provide, without fooling around disabling Sense, etc.
bmhome1
see the other post i did on testing players and resolutions.
I agree that the mp4 PSP (368 x 208) works well
its just a pain that i have to convert all my files (or turn off sense)
I know its a business device but it seems a bit crap when it wont play as well as the TD2
Hi all,
I broke my blackstone (Touch HD) last week and bought a used Touch Pro, so I am new to this section of XDA.
The first thing I noticed was the poor video playback using coreplayer. I never had this problem with blackstone.
I decided to install NeoS2007_Driverpack_3.cab (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=496528), since it is compatible with our device and I must say it is a big improvement.
I wacthed the new A-team movie without any stutter or glitches, so for me this solution seems to work nicely. I left sense running and did nothing else to improve video playback. The file is a "regular' movie file (MPEG-4, 720x304, 25.000fps).
Hope I can be of some help.
cheers!
extra comment: I found the ram usage of stockrom and a lot of custom roms very high, but after flashing a couple I think I found a winner.... see signature. After using it for a whille, the ram usage is "only" at 45%, which is prettu descent I believe for rhodium roms. I installed the driver pack and R6-16 shortcuts and a bunch of other "crap" like changescreen to have TomTom and other programs to run in landscape, so it's no clean rom anymore.
in fairness to core player wheni played an mp4 file on it it was fine without the sense switched off - see my other post regarding the video player testings i did
I forgot to mention in my post here above that using tnyynt SD Tuneup will increase the access speed of the storage card.
You can read about it here: http://pocketnow.com/tweaks-hacks/how-to-dramatically-speed-up-your-storage-card
Install this tweak first and see how the video works. It will smoothen the playback even without NeoSdrivers installed.
Best Results (IMHO)

Is the following option selected in TCPMP? Options>Zoom>Fit Best.
With this selected, TCPMP should fill the screen as much as possible (without "chopping" off any of the picture) depending on the aspect ratio of the video. So you may get some letterboxing. But either the height or the width of the picture should go all the way to the edge. Select "Fill Screen" if you don't want any letterboxing (but you may have some of the picture chopped off).

[Q] Converting Video for WP7

Hi all,
just wondering what people are using to convert .avi/.mkv/etc to mp4/wmv/etc so Zune/Wp7 can use them?
ATM i'm using anyvideoconverter and converting the video's to "Zune HD" but it seems to leave a black border of about 5mm around every edge of the video which is really annoying me, so anyone got any other good ones?
Only confirmed ones please, i've used dozens of Conversion apps that say they'd do the job but in reality they don't, so only post if you've used one for WP7/Zune.
Just convert your Video to MP4 or WMV with WVGA resolution.

FWIW the Microsoft way is to use Expression encoder for WMV. It's free, it's nice, and it does a good job encoding, so if you want WMV you should use that one.

My Zune does not even want to read WMV files so I can not upload. I have multiple copies of DVD's/Blu-Ray's with digital copie of movie for portable devices.
I can copy those movies to my PC and watch them, I can watch them on HD2 but zune doesn ot see them so I can not copy them on to phone. They are all in WMV or MP4 format.
MP4 don't work in Zune!
I tested with this videos: http://cid-e9230930f20e0820.office.live.com/browse.aspx/Windows Phone 7 Ads

Same problem, I have digital copy's of blu-ray's that came with them, they play using WMV but the Zune Software won't see them and won't play them.
Download 'Expression Encoder'. There's an option to encode specifically for Zune.

Funny as phone by default records in mp4
Mabe the audio stream?
I was just playing around with this last night, and the biggest issue was the audio stream. While it plays h264 streams up to the High Profile level 3.0, it did not like an AC3 stream. I had to demux a video that I had in an mkv container, convert the audio to AAC and remux into an mp4 container. Microsoft has a whole detailed table of stream type compatibility with bit rates, profiles, etc. I can't seem to post links, so search for it at the msdn dot microsoft dot com under this title "Supported Media Codecs for Windows Phone". The list on the WP7 consumer site sucks btw.
The AAC has two compatible types, AAC-LC and HE-AACv1 or v2.
I used MeGui to redo the audio, and yamb to mux it.
Thanks dgetz, here is the link to msdn.

Hi all,
just wondering what people are using to convert .avi/.mkv/etc to mp4/wmv/etc so Zune/Wp7 can use them?
ATM i'm using anyvideoconverter and converting the video's to "Zune HD" but it seems to leave a black border of about 5mm around every edge of the video which is really annoying me, so anyone got any other good ones?
Only confirmed ones please, i've used dozens of Conversion apps that say they'd do the job but in reality they don't, so only post if you've used one for WP7/Zune.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112
Seems to work very well
anyone try clonedvd mobile. I have used this in the past with the sony psp settings and gotten very good results, just a very small black strip (maybe 1-2mm) across the top and bottom of the screen (on my hd2).

I can confirm that MP4 works on the Focus, using TV shows previously converted for my iPhone 4
I use handbrake on Windows and Mac to convert my videos, using the settings from
http://lifehacker.com/5572037/handbrake-presets-for-your-new-ipad-or-iphone-4
The results have been good, but using the frame(middle) setting shown in that article does bump up the file size a good amount, and as I'm sure a lot of you have heard, storage space isn't so easy to come by on WP7 yet...
Handbrake
I too can vouch for handbrake. All of the videos I have made for my ipod touch with it work just fine on the Focus. Unfortunately, the library I have for the touch is lower resolution, with videos at about 1/2 DVD resolution and at 500kbps encode rate. I end up with about 500 MB for the about 90 min. It is nice because they don't take up a lot of room, but still look decent. When output to a standard definition TV they look fine as well.
When I first put a few of these home videos on the Focus the lower quality was immediately noticeable. To see how I could push the phone, in my reply above I took a full DVD resolution video 720x400 (16x9 non-anamorphic) and corrected the audio stream. That video looks gorgeous on the Focus screen and is great for showing off the phone. It also takes up over 2.5 GB!!!! It is encoded at a rate of about 2100 kbps. As with any video encoding for a mobile device you have to make your own decision about resolution, encoding rate, etc in that constant game of quality versus size.
One thing to note. If there are black bars on your video, then either you have a video that was not encoded in a proportion that matches your screen or it was hard coded with the black bars. The second thing should be rare nowadays (eliminating this wasted information space was the point of an anamorphic DVD). The first is actually very common. IF your media is a studio movie, almost every action film these days comes at 2.35:1 instead of 16:9=1.77:1. Personally I like viewing any of my content in the way it was originally intended to be viewed and don't ever re-proportion anything. At the moment I am not sure if the Focus/WP7 'stretches' videos. I know on my ipod touch this was an option you could toggle by double tapping the video during playback...
Maybe I will play around with a few options tonight and report back.
have a zunehd and remember seeing this thread on abi
anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58183
it converts the audio of any avi/mkv and keeps the video the same, so converting only takes a few mins, and zune software recognizes it..for the zunehd anyways, maybe someone can try w/ wp7
Since I couldn't find right settings for MediaCoder (best video converter ever).
I was using Prism Video Converter for my Omnia7.
About settings for prism:
For .wmv use as video compresor WMV9 and for sound WMAV9, i am not changing the resolution as it is not bothering me at all. All files (mostly avi or mkv) played smooth after conversion.
If anybody have good settings for MediaCoder I will be much appreciated for sharing.
Thx
Okay, so MP4forHD works. The quality still isn't stunning, but it'll do for now (i guess.) However, i've encountered an issue with contrast. All my blacks appear as dark grays, which drives me nuts
