How can I turn off GPS on my TMO TP2? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I have the Dash 3G and it has the option of turning off the GPS, I have been searching like crazy on TP2 and can't find it. It's draining my battery and I want to keep it off until I need it.
Any ideas?

Are you running an app that is using the GPS?
I just have a Tilt, but the GPS only turns on when an app requests it.
If you are using Google Maps or something there is an option to track you using GPS, and if its on you can click it again to turn it off.

I believe it is always on by default. It's always on the Dash 3G, but it has an option to turn it off.

I may be wrong, but i think (at least by default) GPS stays off until an app tries tries to use it..then turns off when an app stops using it.
Hence the delay in getting a fix after opening an app which uses GPS. if it were always on, it'd already have a lock...?

I could be wrong also, but I believe it stays in sleep mode. Then completely turns on when an app needs it. HTC has always had the option to completely turn it off in Comm Manager.

Anyone????

I cant say I've ever seen a com manager showing it...GPRS yeh, but not GPS

The GPS is not on unless it's in use, something else must be causing you problems.

Oh Ok thanks guys. But I could of sworn that there was an option to turn GPS on or off in previous devices such as the Touch Diamond.

Nup....i have a touch diamond and never seen an option to turn off GPS in comm manager.

GPS doesn't work after suspend

If you leave your GPS app running and put your phone in suspend mode by pressing the power button, does it still work after you wake it up again?
In my Vogue it won't work until I reset it or restart the GPS daemon service but it works just fine in my Titan so I guess it's something software related so if the GPS in your Vogue still works after you put it in suspend mode while leaving your navigation application running, please tell me what ROM you are using and your radio version.
Thanks!

Thanks for letting me know.
This is very uncomfortable for me as sometimes I need to be able to just press the power button to suspend it so it won't drain the battery. I wish I knew what's wrong here as the Titan doesn't have this problem and has the same chipset (MSM7500).
mine does the same thing, ive tried every setting i could and nothing works
Same problem here with using TomTom. I am running the latest Verizon rom because I am on verizon. I didn't let customization run & didn't do any fixes. aGPS fix didn't help this either. I am just going to buy a small BT gps & sya the hell with this F'en BULLSH** & screw verizon.
Guys, I already figured out this problem.
It's the GPS drivers fault, I don't know why most ROMs are using the GPS driver which has this bug.
The OMJ ROM (search for it on PPCGeeks) has the right driver which doesn't have this problem.
Almost every ROM I have ever used has done this.

I am no genius & still using the official ROM & radio. After the phone is turned off it is almost like the GPS is turned off too. The only way to turn it back on is to soft reset. It seems like there must be something in the registry causing this but damned if I know. I would be curious to flash another ROM just to see if the problem persist.

Just turn off GPS before you turn your phone off. GPS uses a LOT of power compared to having your screen on I wouldn't worry about it.
GPS is enough to cause my phone to drain 20% per hour, even on the car charger, (not sure the mA.)
Just saying, the PDA-portion of the phone, even with the screen on, doesn't use JACK compared to when GPS is active.
GPS on my phone is fully fuctional with zero issue now. I get a lock within seconds. I flashed NFSFAN's Verizon 1.12 ROM last night & let the customizations run. I did not have to apply any hacks or fix to get it working either.
....so you are saying that now your GPS works with the phone turned off?
No. Before if I turned my phone off or if it went to suspend mode I would have to soft reset. The GPS would not work or it my work but never obatain a lock. Basically eveytime I wanted to use the GPS I would have to soft reset everytime. With NFSFAN's ROM I don't have to worry about it.

Preventing data connection

I've just received my Desire, and have asked O2 for a new data plan (I used to be on Blackberry). That won't go through until midnight today, and they will charge me £3 mer MB with NO LIMIT until then! So, I need a way to turn data off (apart from WIFI) as soon as I turn the phone on (it's currently charging). I've read some reports of people turning it off, but certain apps turn it on again.
What's the simplest way to do this please, until tomorrow? Thanks!
Hold down the power button until the menu comes up then turn off mobile network.

Ok great, thanks. Yea now I've turned it on, it's pretty obvious.
Is there any chance of an app turning it on again without my knowledge? In some forums people say it can happen, but I THINK that may have been with WinMo.

I've heard of it in the past but not on 2.1, a rogue application maybe but they shouldn't do. It would be pretty easy to notice if you were out of wifi range though as the data icon would appear in the notification bar, your best bet would be to just check on it if you install any app that mentions data in it's software permissions.

Ok I'll do that. I'll also look for an app that'll show me data usage. I know there are some around.
Thanks for your help.
I'm in the same position as you (but my data plan doesn't go live till the 26th! lol), so I set up the phone to WiFi only thanks to the option on the setting screen, and so far it has only connected when I switched on the data toggle. I'll post here if I come across any apps that will connect though.

I've installed a program called NetCounter. It doesn't seem to count Wifi with the Desire (others have had the same problem), but for you and I that doesn't matter. I've got it set to alert me if 'somehow' the phone starts using data from O2. So it's just an extra safeguard. Sorry you have to put up with that until the 26!
I have the same question and I was told APNDroid does it too. Is it better to use APNDroid or the bult-in option?

Just add the widgets for network data, GPS, Wifi to the home screen (I've stuck mine under the clock) easy to turn on and off with single keys presses then rather than holding the power button down. I've also added the bluetooth shortcut but that takes a massive 2 key presses to turn on or off. I've found it useful for saving battery life as well.

He wanted the quickest way after turning it on, holding the power button is quicker than finding and adding those widgets for the first time.

GPS not turning on

I rarely touch the gps function of my phone so the gps is always disabled, but it comes a time after some days of uptime (cannot give an exact number cause this is the second time I experience this), now I have 227 hours, that I enable the GPS but in fact it isn't enabled. How I know this? Well, all the gps using apps like navigation software (igo) and GPS Test aren't fixing location even after 1-2 hours and the gps icon in the notification bar isn't appearing. "GPS Test" says that gps is ON but it won't connect to any sat. If I restart the phone GPS works like it should so no problem there, but I am really curios as why this happenes and how could it be fixed without reboot.
ROM: BlackICE 1.27. (running CM since ...... forever so if I experienced this before it was also with CM rom)
Regards,
Ivan.
Try to push and hold the antenna cover on the behind and see if the signals gets better, if not download the AGPS patch from here on xda. If the problem was the antenna cover then you will have to buy another one and replace it (YouTube) or unroot, S-ON and get it back to stock and then send it back to get it repaired.

I do not have signal or hardware problems. It's software thing. After some uptime when I enable the GPS switch the gps apps see that gps is on, but gps funktions do not work. ALso the GPS icon in the notification bar is not appearing. Only device reboot fixes it, and then ofcourse gps works like a charm ! But I do not want to reboot, that is why I'm asking for a posibile solution.

I had similar problem on cm 7.
Found it if i turn on the gps by a widget it wouldnt fix location or show up in the notification bar. Try switching it on by using the settings -> locations.
Gps fix was horrible on cm7 anyway and camera was grainy, switched back to sense rom (rev hd 7).
Tried that with the settings -> Locations didn't help. For this little issue I won't change to Sense. I do NOT have any problems with gps fix, it does it in 10 seconds max as long as it turns on. The camera indeed isn't the best but I don't give a rats ass about pics because I have a professional camera. And because of the performance and batterylife of CM I will never change back to Sense.
Thanks for the advice thou.
When you say not turning on and not showing in the status bar, I'm wondering if the location settings are correct.
Since a reboot helps but after running the phone a while you can't fix sats.
1. Have you tried clearing igo data and cache? That seems like it should work since rebooting does.
2. Are your GPS locations set correctly? --would think so, but then it wonks out later.
When I initially had problems I got GPS status and downloaded agps assistance but still had problems, rebooting didn't help and push some other file.
Let me know about 1 and 2 see if that helps or what to get GPS on for you all the time (when you want it)

Before I go into IGO I always make the first gps check with gps test plus. And the gps icon is not appearing on status bar, and ofc no sats are found by GPS test. Now gps works because i had to reboot because of another installation. So now everything works great. (gps related)
I also did all the things with agps assitance.... but I am very shure that these things have nothing do to with it, because gps works very good when it is runing.
I am pretty sure it's ROM related.
Yeah sounds that way, just gotta check those simple (we do them) but overlooked tasks.
Good to know everything is working now. Sometimes I just wait for that next update if I don't use a feature that is not working right.

Same thing has happened to me, too. I'm a CM nightly user.
So far the only solution I have found to work is rebooting the phone.
I've found out it seems to happen mostly when I turn the GPS on using the Power Control widget and most of the times it's working fine if I turn the GPS on using the Notification Power Widget.
I have the same issue with the Data connection: when trying to turn it on using the Power Control widget it's a hit and miss situation. I reported this in the CM7 thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22459809&postcount=7352
but no one could offer an explanation or a solution except full wipe.
I always do a full wipe and this still happens.
It's been a few days since I've been using the LorD ClockaN's latest kernel and the issue seems to have gone away.
Here's the kernel thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1085725
and I'm using the kernel from here:
http://blackice.omca.co.uk/download/icecoldsandwich/UE-ginger-kernels/
The kernel file is lordmodUEv8.9-CFS-b2-gpu.zip
Try it, see if it makes a difference for you, too.
Hy,
I am always using the latest LC kerrnel, and tried to activate GPS from everywhere.
I mostly use the notification Widget and still same behavior. Never had problems with the data switch and I do use that one alot. At the moment GPS works because I rebooted few days a go.
Thanks for the reply.

[Q] GPS lock issues on att note 2

My android version is 4.1.1 kernel 3.031-215287...Any help is more that welcome.
Most of the issue is related with the GPS when open maps start blinking or navigation...

Silly question but is the GPS turned on? Mine gets a lock in about 3 - 5 seconds. It also locks in my apt, my old infuse would never lock in my apt.
I'm running cleanrom 3.5, and with gps on I sometimes have to reboot to get a fix, even after using something like gps test to update the agps records. But after a reboot, fixes are nearly instantaneous.

I have similar problems on stock, unrooted Bell ROM. Occasionally when I open an app which uses the GPS it won't lock and the GPS icon won't appear on the left of the notification area (flashing or solid). I always leave GPS on all the time. Restarting the phone always solves the problem.

Thanks already remove the battery, turn off the battery and issue continue....
I'm having pretty much the same problem. Most of the time GPS just doesn't work. Weird thing is that it used to be fine. Sometimes a restart will get it working: sometimes it won't and it doesn't stay working for long if it does.
Right now I'm in Raleigh, NC, which is pretty much the center of the state and the weather widget thinks I'm out by the Tennessee border.
I'm used to having to clear that widget's data to make it forget a location and learn a new one if I'm travelling, but now that doesn't work.
Maps doesn't work well because it's using tower data to figure out a very rough location.
I have not tried using one of the GPS fix downloads yet because, quite frankly, the permissions they want pretty much freak me out. Take pictures? Make calls? What's up with that?
Anyone have any experience successfully resolving this problem?

utorrent stops downloading when screen goes off?

This is pretty irritating that I can't figure this one out... so I'm running CM of that has anything to do with this problem. Utorrent stops downloading when the screen shuts off... I've used utorrent on probably 10 other devices and never had this issue before. "Keep WiFi on during sleep" is set to always, and I have also tried turning off WiFi optimization. Also I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app to no avail. Anybody know what I could be missing here? Thanks!

I could do that I guess, but there has to be something simple I'm missing. I have been using utorrent for a couple years, and every other device, including the previous gen. N7 and the N10 never gave me any issues.. This without ever messing with any settings. It just downloaded in the background, screen off or on.
same problem with my lg g3 but my lg gpad does not face this problem it is annoying letting the screen on all the time.
battery optimization might cause this....
