Overheating - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

The TP has a problem overheating, did they manage to fix that with the TP2? When I use my phone I typically have several things going at once and the TP just overheats, won't charge, and drains the battery.
So the question is can the TP2 handle multi-tasking? (using the GPS, listening to a radio station that is streaming over 3g, and playing that radio station to my car stereo via bluetooth)

I have been abusing my TP2 daily with Wi-Fi and 3G (push emails) and no overheating whatso ever...

My TP had that problem. Specially using TomTom/IGO on sunny days. No problems with TP2 (Spain, August, 40ÂșC)

don't tell me these things overheat easily. that won't bode will with the 50C+ temps we get here.

thanks for the info everyone

My TP also would get hella hot when using tomtom but never overheated. Never crapped out due to too much heat. I have abused the thing besides that and have not had any problems. Same should go for the tp2 since it remains with the same guts.

Well I got mine and it overheats when I try and use it and charge it at the same time. Especially using the GPS and charging.

Are you using the OEM charger...i know the Non-OEM ones suck and make your battery hot anyways.

Yes, that's really the only time the Rhodiums seem to get warm is when they're charging and multitasking and/or using any one or more of the radios at the same time. Mine doesn't get warm on the wall charger...until I start doing anything more than light texting maybe.
Be careful about doing that though, even if you don't see an immediate performance hit. It can affect the lifespan of your battery, and is also one of the suspected causes of the dreaded (and increasingly common) Newton Ring

Battery issues

Ok, this is just plain frustrating and I have no clue about what to do.
The lifetime on my phone is dropping ridiculously fast. I replaced the original batery (that used to get ran down pretty quickly, about half a day, without using the phone much) with a spare battery a friend gave me (it's from a different model, but a minor modification it fit perfectly. For a while, it worked somewhat more decently (although should I have used the phone, I'd lose about 1% for every 30-45 seconds of usage). But for a couple of days, it started wearing down a lot quicker as well.
For instance, just charging the phone and then leaving it without actually touching it on the desk will leave it at 88% battery life within about 30 minutes.
I've checked the processes to see if there's anything out of the ordinary, but everything seems fine. I'm thinking maybe the battery may have gotten damaged in the meantime since it wasn't the designated model for this phone, but I'm having serious doubts.
Also, I've ordered a new battery which should ship any day now. Hopefully it will solve the issue, although I'm considering getting a new phone.
Any ideas?
Also, the old Asus that I used to have (WM 6.0, standard keyboard) still has an amazing battery life, at least compared to the HTC (it can do about 3-4 days in standby, and 2 days with normal usage. Also, it's able to run for 12 hours while playing music and occasional web browsing. I can barely squeeze two hours of usage from my HTC)

Maybe you should get a new and proper battery to your device, maybe your fix does not work anymore. Also you can damage the excalibur motherboard if your messing with different volts from batteries design for other phones.
Well, the battery voltage is the same. So is the pin layout (well, that was pretty self implied). Both batteries are manufactured for HTC phones.
I guess I'll find out when my new battery arrives. However, my phone has been acting weirder and weirder. SD card issues, now the battery... And on top of that, I wonder if the two issues are related.
Edit: also, will the charger output make much of a difference? Say I use a 500 mA charger or a 1000 mA one.
Issue solved. Apparently it was from the SDHC patch I had installed a few days before. Removing the patch did not solve the issue (also, the patch disabled my WIFI) so I proceeded to reinstall WM on my phone. Now it runs fine, with regular battery drain.
I think the patch may have not allowed the CPU to enter idle mode. I can't think of any other explanation.
nah its definitely ur battery. i had the same problem, its that ur battert has degraded and it has become unable to withstand its charge. just call ur phone carrier and tell them. the should send u a free battery.

I know some HTC batteries are the same voltage, but why do you think they make different ones especifically for every model eventhough they have the same voltage.
Just to let you know and regarding the output charger; I did a little experiment once, with motorola chargers (V3) since you can charge your dash with them but I tried to charge the exact phone (motorola) with the original HTC output charger.....and it didn't charge at all.
After months of using the motorola charger I started to realize my battery was not working well in my excalibur and in a period of 4 months my battery didn't hold a charge for more than 3 hours. I bought a new one and I strictly used the orginal HTC charger.
My battery is 9 months old now and works like charm (2 days + hours) with the latest ookba 3vo rom.

First full day at work ..... poor reception and more poor battery life.

Today was my first day at work since i got my Desire on Sat. So it was the day without regular charging.
Firstly, reception was poor as compared to what i was getting with Touch Pro 2. Same network (Orange), same place, less signal bars and less 3G coverage.
Secondly, unplugged phone 7 o'clock this morning, 100% charged. All day only had time for couple of calls (10-15mins). Used internet (3G when available) for max 20-30mins. Tried couple of games for 15-20 mins and at 7 o'clock at night, the battery was 15%. This is not a heavy use by my standards. Used to do a lot more on Touch Pro2 and battery used to last 2-3days. (I know the capaciy difference btw Desire and TP2 battery but still, Desire should last atleat > 24hours)
Not sure if all these issues are related to Orange ROM/Radio. Will we (on Orange) get OTA firmware update like T-mobile, which has apparently improved their battery life? If not then ...... :-(. Not satisfied with the battery life. Shame it is such a good phone but battery life and signal strength is putting me off.
Whats the fun if you have a "superphone" in your pocket but cannot use it to its full potential due to these two isuues.
Mine was the same,
But after a weeks worth of usage, its now reasonable, IE 18 hours between charges,
Fon22
I totally agree, there are other posts telling us to turn off or reduce all sorts of settings, its ridiculous that you would have to run any phone at less than its full potential just to compensate for a poor battery.
Sure you could buy a second battery but if that was necessary then they should put two in the box
If you leave gps on then you are asking for trouble, a lesser extent wifi. Having a toggle on off isn't such a hardship though. Poor signal hammers the battery too.
I easily last the working day (7-7) with an hour of music and 2 hours surfing and a smattering of calls and texts.

Come on guys, if you have a laptop, and you turn on bluetooth, wi-fi, play some games etc, it WILL run the battery down faster. It's just common sense. Just because this phone does heaps of things, dosn't mean it will last forever. As phones get more features, they are getting worse battery life - in general. And android is a data centric device, I would get used to it, or simply turn off some synching features if you need to get through more than half a day. Or perhaps get a spare battery etc.
Just out of curiosity did you have your previous phone to constantly sync throughout the day for time, email, google account, marketplace updates, location, weather using gps, 3g, hsdpa, accelerometer etc? Remember some of these connect are activated every 5 mins or so. Will make it worse if you have poor reception. COMMON SENSE PPL!
My issue is that even after the T-Mobile update, last night I charged phone on this time and it would only get to 98% again. Then drop down quickly.
If I charge it off, It seems to be ok (although I will test this again.)
Frustrating.
My battery life is woeful (TMo uk, updated firmware). I've been trying to figure it out using Juice Plotter to record power usage. Basically, whatever I'm doing, if it's on the battery falls off a cliff - I'd say 10% per 30m and my first impression is that it makes little difference whether networking is enabled or not. This makes little sense to me, I've always found in the past that 3G is just about the most power intensive activity on the smartphone, but it's consistent with some experiences I had flashing roms on my Blackstone - some of them would just run the battery down, others would go for ages. One hypothesis is that when a phone is in that kind of "sick" power state, the drain is not really related to which facilities you're using, but something deeper - perhaps the CPU is running full throttle all the time, or something else. I have no idea what's going on right now but I know I have an unusable phone which lasts half the time my Blackstone did with heavier use. I think many others have the same problem and I wonder if there's a bad batch. Bad news if so as we'd have trouble proving it and getting exchanges.
My next step I think will be to hard reset and run it in a very basic mode for a while, maybe some of the apps are causing it.
I'm also finding out that battery life improves dramatically after the 5th 6th charge. When I first got my Desire I could barely make it through the day, after properly charging and letting it discharge all the way to 10-15% now I get 18-20h of battery life with wi-fi on non stop (but with the setting to to turn itself off after 15mins of inactivity).
I was very worried about this when I first got the phone, but now it's starting to be better and better at battery life. I know my demands from a smartphone when I buy it and if a phone get's me through the day I'm OK with that, plus I have chargers at home, in my car, at work, so it's not a problem
I've got one of the very first batch of T-mobile Desires that were shipped on 26th March. It has been updated with the T-mobile 1.15.110.11 patch.
I last charged it on Saturday afternoon. I've only had to start charging it again this morning Tuesday. I've been making a few calls, probably 10-15 minutes total. A few texts. Browsing with G and 3G, maybe a few of hours worth in total. Little bit of Bluetoothing, though that's only a couple of minutes worth. I've had it down the pub a few hours where the T-mobile signal isn't brilliant, so it will have been doing a little "shouting" to find and communicate with the nearest T-mobile mast.
But that means it's lasted a good 66 hours admittedly with fairly moderate use. GPS, Wifi and Bluetooth are turned off unless needed. And it's not regularly Syncing with Facebook, Twitter and all that stuff. The only regular syncing is the weather.
Not sure if these are bugs with some hardware/software or standard functionality with your usages. I'm getting excellent battery life with my usage patterns/settings and far happier with this than with any of my previous devices, since this adds an exorbitant amount of power-draining functionality and flexibility over them too.
- Heaviest use is netting 28-33 hours.
- Typical use is getting minimum 3-3.5 days.
- Light use (also the norm for me me) lasted 5.5-6 days.
- Basic inconsistent call/message/email/net/stocks/news/stop watch/GPS/ compass/notepad/office/weather/ vid/pic/audio throughout the day kept the battery at 84% after 24 hours. 3G off, using WiFi. I don't keep any but the needy apps/settings running BTW.
- Charges to 100% always and stays up there consistently as expected.
However there is a pertinent aspect yet unmentioned;
Biggest difference between my usage and the typical internet crowd is that I don't use or bother with "social networking" (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc) or its likes nor do I play any games on this (hence sync with such apps is off and any updates are set to manual). However rss feeds, e-mail and IMs with close ones I do use during the day when I have spare minutes.

Same situation as mine there.

I'm deffo leaning now that there are faulty batteries out there causing the problem. I can get good life if I can get the battery to charge properly. but when it doesn't battery lasts hardly half a day. I don't use any apps that require automatic updates (all manual or off). But net on drains it very quickly (if I leave data on). Faulty Batteries I feel.
My Desire has a better ability to hang on to a weak signal than my other phones. I am on T-mobile. Battery life is adeqaute, in that, I can get through a day of use before a charge is needed. Will switch-off GPS and see what happens -I never had GPS on all the time on my other Smartphones.
Coming from a G1 that could barely make it through the day on standby this phone seems pretty good.
I got mine last friday it has just come off of it's third charge. I charged it for 3 hours when I got it, ran it right down >10% then left to charge up fully again.
I installed JuiceDefender and bought the UltimateJuice upgrade as soon as I got the phone.
Day 2 (with JuiceDefender) - battery lasted 13h27m, thats with WiFi, phone calls, MMS, 3g, internet browsing/showing it off to mates in the pub and then listening to an album on spotify in the car.
Considering this is a new battery and it still needs several charges before it is working at full capacity, I think that is pretty good for a smart phone! It can only get better, right?
JuiceDefender - I can't recommend this app enough, I don't want to mess about with Task Killers (that don't really save battery), I don't want to stop stuff syncing (because thats the whole point of this phone) but I want to optimize my battery life to get me through the day and this app does it so well!
I've currently got it setup to turn 2g/3g off when in standby but set to turn data back on every 5mins for 30s to allow apps to sync. You can specify a longer interval which will obviously save more battery over the course of a day. The phone connects back to a 2/3g connection so quick when you bring it out of standby so your not waiting around to get back online.
Switch on WiFi at known locations - I have this setup because at home, 3g signal is a bit patchy and it probably uses more battery constantly trying to get a 3g signal all the time, than it does if it is just connected to WiFi.
Turn data off between 2am-8am while I am sleeping.
Turn data off when battery is below 15% - with my G1 it would hit 15% just as I'd be heading home on the train in the evening, so I'd turn data off just so I could send a few texts or so I had just enough battery to make a call. So I figured I might as well use that last 15% battery for basic phone operation and give me enough battery to get home! I probably don't need this with the Desire though.
Any one else using JuiceDefender?

WOW, can I have your battery please ...
What did u do to get this powerhouse. Was it weaker in the begining and got better with charges or was it like this from the begining?
I dont use GPS at all. Only for navigation, when in car and then it is on charge. Normal day.. no gps, no auto data connection - do it manually when internet connecttion is neede. But battery doesn't last a day, merely 12-14 hours. Charged 3 times yet, only 3 days old Desire.
I cant find juice defender in the market?
When I first got my Hero I remember my battery life being terrible, most of it was down to fiddling all the time, however over time my usage changed and the battery had been charged a lot the life was a lot better. Also there were a number of radio upgrades installed, which probably helped.
Since I've got my Desire, the "desire" to fiddle hasn't stopped and I feel as if I'm in the same situation as I was with the Hero.
My opinion is that over time the battery life will be better, as with the Hero.

Yes both Ultimate Juice and Juice Defender are in the Market.
Juice defender was missing for me a couple of hours ago. But actually, when I installed it thinkgs started to go wrong for me. May be a coincidence, or may be a conflict with some other sw.
Following shocking power drain, I have hard reset, and left it with nothing syncing and all networking disabled. As you'd expect, battery level is barely falling in standby. Now to start adding things back in and see what efects it has. First step is to spend 30 mins browsing over 3g, previously this would take out 10% of my battery.

Battery overheating a lot (CDMA version)

My battery seem to overheat alot, its even uncomfortable to hold up to my face sometimes. Is this normal? The back gets very hot two.

My GN seems to get ridiculously hot pretty often for NO reason. Up around the camera is usually where the heat is focused.
Yup around the camera is where it happens to me too. It usually only happens when I stream Google Music or Slacker
Mines gets hot there too while im just browsing
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Just browsing? That can't be good. Are you rooted? If so, how high do you got your phone over clocked? Maybe you also may have too many processes opened
Most LTE devices heat up under browsing. Its not the battery that gets hot.
Also, I cannot think of a single phone I have had on Verizon that did not get warm during extended calls.
mine heats up a lot also. After talking or browsing for a while it does get warm.
What's your LTE signal strength? If you only have a bar or so, it's been my experience that the phone will heat up trying to keep the connection. At work, I've had to turn off LTE in order to keep the phone cool and save the battery.

Two reasons why that area gets hot:
1) LTE antenna
2) SoC (CPU/GPU)
Both are in the top of the phone, away from the battery. If you're taxing either the CPU or your data connection, it will heat up. As long as your battery isn't getting hot (heat increases the decay rate in lithium-based batteries) you're fine. Silicon can take a lot more heat than your hand can without sustaining damage.
I might need to get a case for my phone and screen protector

I have Battery Monitor Widget installed, and it has been enlightening. Here are my observations, using the charger that came with the phone:
The following behaviors happen on the stock ROM (using the Franco Kernel), CM9, and BlackIce:
If I am on WiFi and charging, it charges quickly, and the battery temperature reported by the app stays within the default limit (45C).
If I am on 3G, and on the charger (whether using the phone for anything or not!), the app shows the battery temp rising quickly, the charge rate drops to zero. The battery is no more than 35C based on my best guess when touching it, HOWEVER the area around the camera is very warm I (where the phone radios are). If I unplug the charger for a minute or two, the temp drops, and plugging back in will start charging again, for a short time, until it heats up again.
Underclocking seems to help this issue, as I discovered, a short while ago (playing with the BlackIce ROM, today), and I will update, once I play with it some more. This said, my suspicion is that the processor heating up is the issue, and NOT the battery, though Battery Monitor Widget claims the battery is overheating. Throttling the processor should help. Underclocking and undervolting BOTH, should help even more, I bet.
It's normal for LTE devices to warm up during extended/heavy use. It's not bad for the device unless you hear a pop or smell burning.
Heat shields FTW!

It IS, however, a problem, if your device is getting warm enough that it ceases charging itself, which has been my experience.
Imagine this scenario: Your phone is below 15% charge, and you plug it in, hoping to be able to get through the day. It charges for five or maybe ten minutes, then you see the battery level start to DROP, rather than rise. (and forget charging, in the car, while you use navigation, or play music, of both) This is what is happening with mine.
The Battery Monitor Widget says that the battery is overheating, when, in fact this seems to be processor and radio related, since it only happens on 3G (and presumably LTE, though I haven't verified it) and only when allowed to operate at a normal clock speed on the CPU--forget overclocking, that worsens the issue, too, and all of this happens, even when the device is sitting idle.
This happened to me on both the FD01 and FD02 radios (I didn't use FC12 long enough matter), so I suspect that we can rule out the radio.
Reiterating, this happens on the stock ROM (with Franco Kernel), and both CM9 and BlackIce, with their respective kernels that they are packaged with. This begs the question of whether it is a problem with the process that monitors the battery charging using up more CPU than it seems necessary for such a mundane task,
Everything else on this phone works wonderfully, so I don't believe that I have a bad device. I should not have to UNDERCLOCK such a high tech device, so that i can charge it effectively when it is sitting idle.
Any thoughts on this? Anyone else have these issues?

Galaxy Nexus Battery Overheating

So, here's the problem I'm having as of late. I really can't remember when I didn't have it, even on my Epic 4G. My GNex (and all the others I've had) has been having problems with the battery overheating (as confirmed by Trickster Mod) while not having much going on. It occurs with all three of my batteries. At screen off with nothing running it idles at about 41 degrees Celsius. Streaming music and looking at Reddit can put it to 50. My main problem is in my car in my pogo pin dock. If I had the choice I would be using Navigation, streaming TuneIn, hooked up to an FM transmitter with Bluetooth, and using AutoGuard as a dashcam. This puts the battery temperature to a minimum of 54 degrees Celsius, making it refuse to charge. I've also tried removing the back cover to help heat dissipation as well. Is this just normal behavior? Am I expecting too much from my device? Do any of you know how I can make this work?
Same, but no answers

I have had the same problem with my Sprint Galaxy Nexus the entire time I have had it, rooted or not. It is really very disappointing. I really need sombody to help on this subject. It seems as though it is when the screen is on and you are doing a lot of multitasking, it will overheat extremely fast. My battery is at around 119 F when I am trying to use 3G or 4G and doing something else.
Same problem here.
But I think I just noticed that overheating problem when I updated to the latest android 4.3
Another thing... The heating came from behind the camera lens not the battery I guess.
Any idea or help?

In your experience, how does wifi/BT/nfc standby affects battery?

Just want to know your thoughts about having wifi or Bluetooth enabled all the time, even with no connection or pairing with nothing, regarding battery life
I ask this because my test would not be accurate as I always use the phone differently (moving to different places, calling, music) apart from playing with kernel and other settings... So can't really tell the difference in that
Please don't tell me, just turn them off when leaving home or leaving your car. My point is to get it connected/paired with no need to unlock phone, turn on... etc... xD
About NFC I saw a module to enable it when screen off. But I read comments that it causes big drain, obviously
On the previous build MH19C I was pretty sure if wifi 5GHz is enabled and available, it will drain and also wake like crazy. This happens in my office but not at home where I don't have a 5GHz wifi or even wifi ac, but is widely used in office, with multiple physical AP's. Now already on the May update, I no longer enable 5Ghz wifi and backgroud scanning just to be safe.
Less than other devices due to the Android Sensor Hub and Doze.
while not in wifi i have data which drains tons of battery anyway, so i dont even bother with any miniscule effect wifi scanning might have. i would advise you to put it off your head too, there are thousands of tiny unessecary battery drainers in your phone, it would sap your mental health trying to deal with anything more than the big ones (data/screen/bugged apps) for only few % of battery.
if the phone is able to last till bedtime or return to home, then it does not matter to meddle with anything. charge it every night and if comes to worse it charges to 50% in few minutes
Thanks for responses

Exactly, that's why I want to know if the % is noticeable or not
It's a good advice. However it's also good to keep things in order because battery cicles are limited in phones and my goal is to keep the 5x more than 2 years xD
So I wouldn't be fine just getting at the end of the day, it's good to preserve and not drain unnecessary drain, considering this battery is not removable, plus it is already 'bad' being new haha

i dont know about battery cyrcles, but replacing battery on 5x is not hard - watch a video about it as to not make any hasty mistake, and its piece of cake.
also its better if the battery is not too low when recharged and not too hot. 5x already has a annoyingly protective temp threshold so you dont need to worry about ruining your battery that way, while its better to recharge every night (or more often if you need) even if there is plenty of juice in the phone cause that is healthier for the battery.
If reducing battery cycles is your main goal, you have to turn them off.
I'm keeping wlan (connected at least 50% of the time with decent-v good connection)/bt (most of the time no connection, only in car and for bt speakers) switched on all day and they together take 7-8% battery on (my) average use (~10-15% left before charging every night), of course much less (in relation) when heavily using the phone.

Thanks
That's what I wanted, some numbers about your experience
Fine then. Once I get some rom and kernel stable I will check for myself. For now it will be disabled when not using (tasker helps too)
