My Rhodium does not reconnect WiFi on disconnect - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi,
I'm using WiFi at home, hosted by a Linksys WRT54GL router running OpenWrt and secured with WPA2/WPA-PSK. Once in a while, the WiFi connection to my Rhodium gets disconnect (phone issue, wifi on my notebook is stable). After this disconnect, I go to the notification list, and theres a notification telling my that theres a new network found, but to connect to the network, I need to enter the WPA password everytime. Only way avoiding to reenter the password is rebooting the device; then it automaticly connects to my network again.
Anyone having similar problems or even know a fix?
Thanks in advance,
Christoph

I got the same problem, and i got the same router as you with WPA2... It's really anoying. Is it a settings issue on the phone or what?

Wifi Issues with Smartphones / PDA WEP and WPA
I've been a windows mobile / smartphone user for about 4 years now. I started off with a xw6700 from verizon, then a Tilt from ATT, and now testing a Touch Pro 2 from t-mobile not sure if I'm keeping it. With each device I've had the same issues. I will explain below what I've found and what I've done to make it as painless as possible with WIFI and my PDA devices.
I currently run 2 WIFI networks due to this issue. I use roadrunner so I was able to about 10 years ago get a multiple IP package, which they no longer offer. I have 4 IP addresses 3 of which I use for my computers/1 wifi network and another I use for a wifi network just for PDAs/phones.
If i use a PDA with WIFI enabled on the network my computers are on using WEP after a few times of connecting/disconnecting PDAs and trying to reconnect I get a problem where the device wont take my WEP key over and over again. I have to reboot the WIFI router, and then the device will connect successfully. This is very annoying since any device I try to add to the wireless will not connect as well. This problem is due to the PDA, now I've tried mulitple routers DLINK, NETGEAR, LINKSYS, AIRLINK, they all do the same.
Now with my 2nd network I use WPA. WPA seems to be more friendly when it comes to disconnecting and reconnecting PDAs. I can use my PDA's on this network connecting and reconnecting for a few weeks before the WIFI router requires a reboot because it will no longer take the WPA password. Again I am not sure why this happens, and I am not sure why it affects WM5, WM6, WM6.1. Not sure if its the hardware of the device or the software, but it seems to happen no matter what WM device I have.
My iphone will disconnect and reconnect to either of my networks without any problem. Unless the PDA screws up the wifi on either network, then the iphone will never authenticate and connect to the network. Seems these WM devices no matter what hardware are really good at screwing up WIFI networks.
Now my findings are every time you put the phone to sleep/off the wifi turns off, it could possibly be the cause for the above, this pisses me off. There was one forum a while back I found someone saying WPA is more stable. I know the iphone does the same (turns off wifi when in standby/sleep), but doesn't affect the router the same as WM devices. If anyone would like to say otherwise then they are wrong/lying to you. I guarantee if they turn off and on their WM device to say check an IM or a TXT and turn it back on a few times they will experience the same problems above, which it seems everyone experiences but no one has answers.
I wish there would be a professional from HTC or HP or anyother PDA maker who will just come out and say they screwed up and didn't want to fix it.

WiFi Problems With 2 Networks

Hi
I have a wifi AP at home, and one at work, Both use WPA-PSK with mac addy auth. SSID Visible cause sh1te WM2003SE OS cant cope with hidden SSID.
Get a whole load of oddities from the XDA IIs. Both SSID's and keys are listed in the wifi setup on the device. What I would expect is that if I switch the device on when I am within range of the AP @ work, it connects to it no fuss, likewise, when I drive home, switch XDA on it connects, no fuss, unfortunately this is not usually the case. The following are in order of likelyness to occur!
Problem 1
Sometimes I switch it on, and it sits there searching for eons, never finds AP. If I disable and then re-enable wifi on the XDA then it connects.
Problem 2
Sometimes, the XDA will tell me that its connected to my home network when I am at work - it isn't!
Problem 3
Sometimes I switch it on, it connects to the AP, but no net connectivity - looking. Using PPC Ipconfig, I see that device never managed to get an IP addy. Stop, start wifi problem resolves
Problem 3
Occasionally, the PPC forgets the shared secret, and I have to re-input it, start/stop wifi before it will connect to the AP
Problem 4
Sometimes, it just BLUNTLY REFUSES to connect to the AP if I do the above. In this case I try all the above with a soft reset as well. If that fails then I need remove all the wifi AP's, soft reset, wait (ages) for it to see a new AP, enter the PSK then it will connect.
It also struggles to connect to other APs (wifi hotspots). Things work a whole lot better when there is just one AP involved (i,e not work and home).
Prob 4 occurs once/week, prob 1 occurs every day, others somewhere between. All problems are of course COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE for a product that has been released to the consumer.

Hello Veledron,
I've a similar problem: at our company WLAN is set up to reqire WPA and authentication with user certificates. Since it is not possible to import user certificates in Windows Mobile 2003 SE "out of the box" I found out how to do that - it is described here
http://www.jacco2.dds.nl/networking/crtimprt.html
a little bit difficould procedure, but it worked - I can see my personal company certificate in the private-certificate store of my MDAIII.
The problem is, that I can't get a connection. WLAN-Manager says "connected", but I can't receive an IP-address - and in the logs of our Cisco-APs I can't see anything from my PDA. What also is a little bit strange for me: the MDAIII does not remember the setting "authentication with certificates", it always switches to "authentication using PEAP"...
any idea?
thanks
Gerald
Hi Veledron & gekap
I too have similiar problem with my netgear router at home. It seems that everytime it connect to the network it will just keep scanning eventhough it prompt that it already connected. It been 2 days and still i cannot manage to connect
Hopefully there is a solution to this problem.

There is.... Turn off AP, or move device to location where it is out of range, remove all WiFi profiles from device, hard reset, turn on router. wait (ages) for device to realize that there is a wifi ap nearby, enter PSK, all is well.
There seems to be no pattern to the WiFi failures, I have to do the above maybe twice a week to get it to connect. When the device gets itsself into a poor state this is the only way.
You cant delete an active profile, and the profile list only appears when wifi is turned on (stupid!) hence the need to turn off the AP.

Hi Guys,
I manage to solve my wifi problem,
i just add the XDA IIs mac address to my netgear router plus assigned a reserve ip address based on it mac address and was able to connect successfully with no problem. Hope this solution helps.

Hi,
thanks for the tips, but all of them are not a solution for me. I do not have any problems connecting to WLANs using WEP or to unencrypted WLANs, but i guess that there are problems with WPA in the PDA2K. I think the guys of you who have succussful connected to a WLAN using WPA have done that using WPA-PSK, not WPA with TKIP as encryption-method and PEAP or certificates as authentication method over 802.1x.
In our company TKIP is mandatory, and it is necessary to use certificates for authentication - this can be done with either EAP-TLS (so called "smartcard or certificate" in the setup-menu of the PDA-2k) or using PEAP. I've troubleshooted this a lot, and I can't see any authentication packet coming to our Cisco-APs from the PDA2K using this methods (I've turned on advanced logging on the APs to see any little bit...).
I fear the worst, that the WLAN-driver of the PDA2K does not support TKIP! Of course WPA is supportet from Windows 2003 Mobile SE, but in my opinion that is not enough - the card driver down the OS must also support the whole WPA-Standard, and it seems to me that the PDA2K driver does only support WPA-PSK. I found an article which can be an explanation of the problem:
http://www.socketforum.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2924
So I've 2 questions to you:
.) which driver version is installed on your PDA2Ks? (you can find that in the registry under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Drivers\Wavedev - I've: Common: 0.04.01, Device: 1.06.01 GER, DriverVersion: 0.08.00, Patch: 1.00)
.) has anyone of you ever connected to a WLAN using WPA (not WPA-PSK!)?
thanks
Gerald

XDA IIs Wifi and lockups

Does anyone have a problem with their wifi locking up their xda iis? I have bought a linksys router and am getting frequent lockups when using wifi. I am using the shipped O2 rom, thanks
I have no problem at all with Netgear router. Try changing the connection speed setting in the router to the "b" mode only. Hopefully this can solve your problem.
No problems here either I'm afraid. I'm using a Draytek Vigor 2600VG at home and at work there are two of us with XDA IIs using a Linksys BEFDSR41W wireless router and no problems there either.
Sorry! :-(
Try a hard reset (gulp!) and see if you still have problems (Without anything else installed that might be inteferring) otherwise might be a faulty unit perhaps.

I second what xanth said, I had the problem where wifi would not turn on, so I hard reset and installed each software back individually the problem was Calligrapher 7.3 did not like being in Storage or Storage Card only in Main memory (go figure)

I use the XDA IIs on a variety of wireless networks and experience problems with an alarming regularity. The most annoying is the fact that the top bar seems to loose functionality, when using wireless!!
I will actually add that I do seem to have problem with the "range" of WiFi.
I need to do more testing, but it doesn't seem to be more than 20m or so before have communication issues/timing out :-( Will have to find out what our walls are made of!!!
I have problems connecting sometimes. I regularly use three routers, Draytek, Buffalo and Belkin. The only time that it locks up is when using skype. The skype problem is a known issue with no cure.

I am having a problem where my Siemens SX66 will loose connection to my Microsoft MN700 wireless AP on occasion. -It simply appears as if the Wifi radio shuts itself off.
Weird.....
Wifi has never worked for me. It simply doesn't work in the way nature intended.
The main problem (as far as I can tell) seems to be that it cannot get DNS or IP configuration settings from my router (Belkin 7630) automatically.
It can connect to my wireless network without any hassle, but that's about it. If I enter DNS and IP settings manually it works fine. But this is unworkable if you want to connect to another wireless network.
If I can't sort this out by next week I'm going to sell the unit on eBay. It's been nothing but a pain since I mistakenly bought it in December.
Wifi is a nightmare on this device! I'm going back to Nokia.
I am going to do a hard reset and test to see if i still get any freezes. Anyone know of any software i can use to backup my text messages?

Hi guys,
Haven't had too many issues with WiFi over here - standard O2 Asia ROM (with the BT 3500 update).
I'm running a Netgear WG602 @ home with 64bit WEP and a Dlink AP2100 @ work with WPA-PSK. No connectivity problems at either location, both DHCP. It does however take a few minutes to connect, but this is on the odd occasion.
The only frustrating thing with the WiFi is that I have to soft-reset often to turn Wi-Fi on - any ideas? Hopefully O2 will fix this in the next ROM. Other than that, I've had the Nokia 9500, P900/800 and this is by far the best device for the power user.
Just me 2c!
Cheers
cK
Wifi is on all the time on my device, sometimes when I switch the device on while within range of an AP it does not connect. Often switching wifi off and then onn again causes it to connect. If this does not work then I can often go into the network dialogue section, and see the network marked as 'availble' but not connected (why it sometimes does not auto connect I dont know). Tapping connect usually cures. If that does not work then I too need to soft reset.
I hope like you that they fix this cause its damned anoying. I will be interested to see what the Benq P50 is like when its released. I shall get one from expansys to test and ship it back within the 7 days.

As for those having problems with specific access points. It is not nessesarily the fault of the blue angel. It seems to me that none of the manufacturers of wireless kit understand the term 'standard' they all seem to have their own take on it, which is why kit from different manufacturers refuses to talk to each other. I am of the opinion that they do it in purpose to lock you into using their client cards with their AP's !!
Try it with some non Belkin kit and see what happens.
Nigel
Well i tried a hard reset and didnt install any apps and tried connecting to wifi again and still got a lockup and loss of connectivity. Im going to swap the router for another make and see what happens
Swapped my linksys router for a D-Link and so far no problems after 2 days. so looks like my problem was my router.

XDA IIi and wifi
I just bought one of these and can't get it connected. I have a netgear wg602 access point. When I finally figured out how to set the IP manually (the 02 xda tech support said it can't be done - maybe they're right ;-)
I now have it saying it's connected, with right IP address. My DNS and gateway are set up for the wireless adapter in network adapters. The signal is average. The XDA says wifi is connected. The access point even says it's authenticated and associated - same as my other stations.
Only problem is, internet explorer doesn't find any web pages - says "The page you are looking for cannot be found" (works fine through GPRS)
Also, terminal services times out trying to connect to an internal IP address (to eliminate DNS as a problem)
So, anyone know how I troubleshoot network problems - it looks like a TCP/IP issue? Can't find ping or arp etc. I've also tried an IP address that I know works on the network.
thanks for any help
Dave
Hi
For ping, ipconfig and stuff, head to http://www.cam.com/windowsce.html
I have had multiple issues trying to get wifi working reliably. It still fails now, but there are a few tricks to get it working again. Most of my wifi issues have been due to regular use of three AP's [email protected] and [email protected] along with GPRS and VPN.
To start with I suggest setting all the ****e in connections (internet and home network to 'My ISP' then goto your wifi setup, network adapters, and tell it that the wireless card connects to the internet. Now, tap ok, and goto tools, network cards, tap the active connection (it must already be connected) and ensure that its set to internet.
Next soft reset the thing, and wait for it to connect to yr wifi. Now, use the ipconfig tool and ping tool from the above site to check that all is OK. Check that its got the default gateway right and a sensible LAN IP.
I have found on occasion that I can be connected via wifi, but that the device is still trying to talk using an old IP allocated by gprs which means nothing to my lan! IPconfig will show if all is OK.
Whoever wrote the whole of the networking system (and its terrible gui's) on windows mobile wants shooting. I usually have 2 VPN profiles setup under my work network. If I leave it set to that, and use wifi from my lan to connect to the internet all is fine. However if I try and access a local server, the damned thing starts trying to connect a vpn (it aint inteligent enough to work out that the IP I asked it to connect to is local).
I have been trying to find a setting for all this networking rubbish that allows me to do *everything* without reconfiguring each time - to no avail.
Another thing to note is that you cant send/receive MMS messages while wifi is connected (more stupidity), it tries to connect to the MMS server using the wifi connection, and the telco blocks it cause it wants to charge you for sending MMS over GPRS. Only solution is to disconnect wifi, send MMS then reconnect wifi!!!

No problems with WiFi for me
Hmm I'm using an O2 Asia Rom as well.. and my wifi manager seems to automatically create "settings" for each AP it detects and I seem to have no problems connecting at all... been using WiFi around my house since the first day i got it..
i am using a Linksys Wireless 802.11b router..
btw I am new here.. finally able to register!
How's everybody doing?
Cannot turn off IEEE 802.1x
Has anyone had problems unchecking the 'IEEE 802.1x netwrok access control' checkbox???
I uncheck it, but then when I go back to the screen (click on the connection | then select 802.1x tab at the bottom) it has checked itself again!
The XDA IIs does not save the setting - it just keeps re checking itself 02 help have been no use - they sent me an instruction manual and it even says in one of the step 'uncheck IEEE check box'
Im am using a netgear wirelesss router and have also tried on a d-link
Sugestions - is anyone else having this problem??

Wifi Woes after upgrading

I've upgraded my TyTn to WM6 using the new repackaged rom from Mrvanx, however I have a weird problem with the wifi.
It cannot see my router whereas before I upgraded there was always a strong signal.
I have set up the WPA encryption key etc. and also set the router up without encryption but it just shows unavailable in the list.
A neighbours network which is also WPA is found OK and it connects and asks for a key.
My laptop is connecting OK to the router so I assume all is OK with the router.
No mac filtering or anything like that installed in the router.
Noticed unlike old wm 5 the wifi Icon only stays active for about 20 secs even though in comms manager the WIFI icon shows it switched on?
Anyone got an idea what might be the problem. I do like the ROM but I do need my wifi on trips and I need to travel soon again so hoping I can fix this.

ROM 3.54,707.3 repackaged
Radio 1.03.03.10
WIfi Woes - part success - update
OK I found the answer but created another question ;-)
For security I turn off the SSID broadcast on my router. I turned it on and the TyTn immediately connected.
I always had a good connection on my original WM 5 ROM without SSID, but it appears the new one will not even see the network without SSID broadcasts.
Are there any other settings in the device to allow it to work without SSID because I am thinking that maybe some free WIFI accespoints have it turned off too?

Mobile Wi-Fi router stopped working

So I've been using the Tom coding package that installs the mobile Wi-Fi router with no problems until last night... now it keeps trying to connect to ISP.Cingular and then stops... it basically doesn't work now. I've tried to uninstall and reinstalled it dozens of times with no luck.
And yet... the 3G connection works because I can browse through Opera. So...?
OhI might add that I can turn on the Wi-Fi and connect to my in-house router just fine and do what on the internet through the phone. SO... it is definitely something specific with wireless internet sharing.
???
Someone please he me I use internet sharing DAILY
You need to make sure that it is connecting to the correct address. At the bottom of the App, it should have a few different choices of connections to use. Try another one and see if it works. You may have to set up a new connections for this to work properly. Keep in mind that tethering/mobile hotspot is not covered by AT&T's wireless data plan. It is a separate monthly charge. You should be careful when using it too much at a time, so they don't block or throttle your connection.
The device I am trying to connect with to my Tilt 2 is a Samsung Galaxy Tab, and apparently it doesn't like ad-hoc, whatever that is exactly. I was told on the Galaxy Tab section of this forum that this is the case, and that I need some kind of "mobile ap", although again I do not understand what that exactly means. ???
Ah, see that's much better information. So, no, you probably won't be able to connect without another app doing so. Ad-hoc is, simply put, a connection to another device other than a router which is allowing you access to its Internet connection. If the device you're trying to connect with doesn't allow ad-hoc connections, then the Wifi Router app won't do you any good, as that is the type of connection it uses. Most mobile devices do not natively support this, however. The problem, therefore, is with the Galaxy Tab you have, not with the TP2. Find an app or mod that allows for ad-hoc connections and you'll be all set.
Well is there an apparently for the WM phone side of things that will do non ad-hoc??
No. Ad-hoc is a connection between two devices. Unless you use a router, that's how it's going to be no matter if you are using WM, a laptop, iOS, Android, et cetera. The connection type is determined by the device sending the signal. If it comes from a device, then it is ad-hoc. It is not a problem with the software. That is how wifi was designed to work in the first place. The problem, again, is with the Tab, not the WM application.
Well apparently there is a solution for the Tab that allows it to see ad-hoc networks, so I will try that and let you guys know how it went.
Can no longer connect to Ad-Hoc with Tilt 2
I have been using both the CM Internet Sharing program and the WMWifiRouter with no issues for over a year now on my AT&T Tilt 2.
One day a couple weeks ago I had been using CM to connect my laptop to the internet. everything was just fine as usual.
At some point, I had disconnected and tried to reconnect, and since then I can no longer use either of these programs.
What happens is this...I turn them on and the phone will no longer hold a connection to the ad-hoc network that is created. Up in the status bar I see the icon showing WiFi trying to connect but it will not stick anymore.
I can connect to my office and/or home wifi router still. It just will not connect to the ad-hoc network any longer.
This makes no sense to me at all, since it has always worked and was even working earlier in the day when it stopped working.
I use the tethering frequently and really need to get this solved. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] Multiple HD7s on Wifi

Does anyone have multiple HD7s on the same wifi network? We have three devices and they all connect perfectly by themselves as long as no other one is connected. But they only sporadically connect, if at all, when one device has connected and the other tries to hop on. If you turn the connected device off, the other one trying to connect connects immediately.
The router is a Netgear 108g WGT624. Changing the router settings make no apparent difference. It doesn't matter if it's WEP, WPA, no security, no MAC address filtering, changing the password, nothing at all. The only contingency is whether or not another HD7 is connected.
Might it have anything to do with how close the MAC addresses are? All three devices have identical MAC addresses through the first 6 numbers.
If anyone has a multiple HD7s working on the same network, please post your wireless setup.
that could possibly be the issue (having close mac addresses). but if they're all unique i don't see how this should be an issue. have you tried using the HD7s on a different router (not made by netgear)? if not, i'd suggest that to see if it's your router or something else. let us know how it goes...
Unplug the router for 15-30 seconds.

if you send me your hd7's I'll be happy to test for you!!!
My household has two WP7 devices and I don't have any WiFi issues. They both sync thru WiFi as well.
My WiFi is handled by an Apple Airport Extreme. Routing is done in the basement by a Linksys router.
I've not noticed any issues with having our 2 connected to the network at home, then again, I've not checked they're both connected at the same time.
I know that I used to have issues where my TP2 and my wife's Hero couldn't connect at the same time which was mighty strange. Sounds like this could be a similar issue you're having, sadly I can't offer an explanation of why it happens though
I'm not sure what the problem was exactly but getting a new wireless router solved the issue, all 3 HD7s connect great now
The new router is a Netgear WNDR3400-100NAS.
Have 2 hd7 and 1 will connect without problems, the other one needs wifi turned off and then back on before it will connect,
Belkin router, and have played with all the settings on the router.
That sounds like the same thing that I had. A new router was the only solution I could find: $80 at Best Buy.
Unplug the router for 15-30 seconds. If that doesn't work see if there is a new firmware update for your router. If that fails you need a new one.
