shorct cuts to SD card - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

is it possible to get a a short cut for the SD card or folders on the sd card to appear in the programs menu
i hate having to use FE to get to stuff

yes. download total commander and install it. Next navigate to /windows/start menu/programs and copy one of those shortcuts (lnk file) to a different location. Go to that location with total commander and view properties. there you can change the values to point to the file you want to launch. now copy that newly modified lnk file back to the start menu/programs folder and it will be in your all programs in TF3D. i believe there is a program you can use to jsut click an exe file and "create lnk" but im not sure what it is.

Unable to change files in \Windows on TMobile Dash WM6

I'm trying to remap the TZones button on my Dash. However, when I try to manipulate Short_IE.lnk in \Windows on my phone via Total Commander it does not work. I cannot change the file. I have tried an app unlocker mentioned in [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=281838] but I am not sure if that will do the trick.
Any ideas?
have you tried dragging the file onto your desktop, editing it there and moving it back to your \windows folder?
I suppose that might work, if \Windows could be located through Windows explorer. I'm not sure how to use ActiveSync to write files to the \Windows directory on the phone either. I just pop up My Computer and transfer files to my SD card directly.

You can't write files to the \Windows directory via ActiveSync. You'll have to write them to My Documents or another visible folder while in ActiveSync. Then using your phone's File Explorer, copy and paste the file from whereever ActiveSync placed it to the \Windows directory.

I can drag and drop at least some files straight to \windows through activesync... specifically the eT9 files for fixing keymapping. Is that not normal?
I've used the unlock method listed here (alternative way) http://www.modaco.com/content/HTC-Monet-Monet-MoDaCo-com/251706/Application-unlock-for-Monet/ and the phone is reported to be fully unlocked. I am still unable to change the Short_IE.lnk file in the \Windows directory. I'm still using Total Commander. I'm trying to rename the Short_IE.lnk file to Short_IE_o.link (original) so that I can rename Short_IE1.lnk which has my desired mapping. I'm just told "Cannot copy or move file!"
Well that's just great. I guess I don't understand this fully. I created a text document on my desktop and renamed it to Short_IE.lnk. From there I dropped it into the Application Data folder and used Total Commander to move it to \Windows. Overwrote the file without a hiccup. Seriously, WTF. Why wouldn't I just be able to edit the shortcut directly? It worked nonetheless but now when I try to use the key (mapped it to point to a shortcut) I'm told that there is no application associated with xxx.lnk (which opens a blank sms message to the person of my choice) and to open that file within the proper program. Now if I run the shortcut directly, it works. I may just edit the Short_IE to open the blank sms message and trash having it point to the shortcut I already made.

I wouldn't think so because most of us, I know I cannot, are unable to see the \Windows directory via ActiveSync or Windows Explorer.

Really? Through ActiveSync (4.5, XP Pro), I click explore, and then open a folder called "full device", or something similar (don't have it in front of me) -- that puts me at the root folder. From there I can open "storage card", "windows", "my documents", etc.
Strange... I always thought that was normal (since it's been that way over 3 computers and 2 phones..)

Maybe on your desktop open my computer, then go to tools>folder options>view>Show hidden files and folders>OK.
Now you can see your \Windows directory through AS.
YOU CAN drag and drop files to the device's \windows directory. There's policies defined in some ROMs (like Roger's) that will not let you do that. But with Kavana's latest... it's not a problem.
Try changing policies 1005 and 1017 to hex "16" in the registry, in order to relax the permissions even more.

Just use resco file explorer...

THANK YOU! I'm glad I wasn't going crazy.
OK Here's one for you!
New issue! I use Total Commander to create a shortcut that points to my Storage Card. I place the shortcut in my Start Menu. When I go to open that shortcut...guess what! WINDOWS CANNOT FIND STORAGE CARD OR ONE OF ITS COMPONENTS. WHAT THE ****. If I use Windows Explorer on my computer to navigate to a directory that I place the shortcut in I can double click on it and I am taken right to my storage card. If I click on the shortcut while in Total Commander on the phone I am taken to my storage card.
WTF is wrong with WM6? Why would a valid-everyfuckingwhere-else shortcut not work when placed in the Start Menu?
Relax on the cursing

I agree with mikey on the foul language,,,,, when you create your shortcut to your storage card, are you making the shortcut to a folder or an .exe file? if you are making the shortcut to just your storage card ( or a folder) you must (i think) also include what browsing program to use inside your .lnk file. If its an .exe you are linking to then try and put quotations at beginning and end of your shortcut ( ex: #16 "storage card\program files\games\pocketnester.exe" ) otherwise you need it to look something like this #16 fexplore.exe - "\storage card\" ...( not sure if the latter string is completely correct , but you get the idea)
see the reason why this is working while you are in windows explorer (fexplore.exe) or total commander is because you are at that time in some sort of file explorer program. But if you do it straight through your start menu you are not actively in a file explorer program and windows doesnt understand what to use to browse to that directory

I see what you're saying here. Makes sense. I just thought that, you know...it's Windows, there's a Start menu and whatnot so I figured that some form of explorer was already running in the background so I guess I'm lost as to why one would need to invoke a file explorer to navigate the directories. But this is a phone moreso than a computer. Also, I was tired from a long day at work lol. Frustration clouds the mind. I'll try the fexplore.exe suggestion. Any idea if the 16# is right? I'm not sure what that is for...I see those thrown around and I thought they were button mappings...
Edit: Negative on #16 fexplore.exe - "\storage card\" or 16#:fexplore.exe -"\Storage Card\" or 16#"\Windows\fexplore.exe -\Storage Card\"....

Well i tried everything i could too. i know there is probably a way for either file explorer or resco explorer to go to the storage card as soon as it is launched. Personally i dont have this issue because i use smarttoolkit and there is immediate access to the storage card via the start menu without using any 1st or 3rd party file explorers but you may not want to use this proggy so i thought i'd help. sorry i couldn't solve your question
ok i got it! you can do it one of 2 ways: 1. edit the .lnk file with this #40"\windows\explorer.exe" "\storage card" 2. You can use resco explorer and navigate to the storage card and do a copy.....then paste shortcut in the \windows\start menu directory. cheers!

Program shortcut

I have installed a program which does not appear in Installed Programs.
To run it you have to tap an .exe file which is in a directory on the storage card.
Is there a way to create a shortcut and preferably an icon that I can add to the Programs page in the Touchflow.
TIA
Paul
I had the same issue (with Tomtom). I just made a short cut to the .exe in the folder the program was in, and moved that shortcut to Windows -> Start Menu -> Programs. I did this using Active sync.
Hi Gunther
I have just tried that however when I right click the .exe in file on the phone or in Active Sync I do not get the option to create a shortcut - just the Cut, Copy, rename, Delete etc.
Did you take a copy of the .exe file or find another way to do the shortcut?
Thanks
Paul
using File Explorer in your HTC Touch HD right click on the target and chose copy option
go to the destination folder right click again and chose pase shortcut
I am not having any joy. When I right click and copy the .exe file and then go to the Windows -> Start Menu -> Programs and then right Click again the option to paste as shortcut is greyed out. If I paste the .exe file then it appears as a program in the list of programs however it does not run.
The shortcuts are .lnk files. I presume they point to the .exe/program files location however I cannot open them to see what is inside.
Thanks everyone - I did it. Just went to the Start Menu and then used Menu - Paste shortcut.
If you've already got File Explorer installed, just install the file explorer extension.
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-file-explorer-extension.html
Then just click and hold on the program and choose Send shortcut to Progr ...

add a shorcut

i have a program installed on my phone but the run file for it is in the phones files and dosnt appear on the other programs tab where the like of titter and IE are
is there any way of adding it to this so i can set it a icon the shorcut page
thanks for any help
Easiest way is to install Total Commander (file explorer program, google it) which has a create shortcut option. Then save the shortcut under Windows/Start Menu/Programs

i got to the exe and copied it to to windows/ start menu and it appears there and allows me to add it as a shortcut but when i try to run it it s not enough memery on the device, yet when i run it on the device from ist normally location it runs no problem
any advice would be great
thanks
I think you need to paste a shortcut rather than the exe itself
instead of choosing paste choose the option below called paste shortcut
your right the shortcut worked a treat thanks
tom tom up and running now

Cab editing to install on SD Card

How can I edit my cabs to change their default installation folder to SD/program files, for example, instead of their default installation folder which is usually somewhere on the device memory ?
I have got an app on my PC called WinCE Cab Manager. I used it to edit a cab file, changed the installation folder to \StorageCard\program files......but what it did was created a folder & subfolder on the device memory & named them StorageCard\program files

Should it not be "Storage Card" - with a space?
go in the CAB information properties,
edit installation directory,
add folder "Storage card" on root
add program files there or whatever.
for files then keep "install dir"
-
remember that installing on sd is not standard install.

Yes. I did that & the result was that it has created a folder on the device memory called Storage Card & installed the app in a subfolder in that folder.
It neglected the physical Storage Card completely. My objective is to change the default install dir of all my cabs so when I use XDA_UC, it automatically install them to the SD Card. What XDA_UC currently does is semi-auto install whatever I put in XDA_UC/SD, meaning that it runs the installer & asks me to select where to install the app.
oh.. And other thing is, if your card is not plugged in/initialized when UC will start, it may just create a folder Storage Card and then initialize SD as "Storage Card2" ... happened to me pretty messy.
You can make cabs which don't ask to ask:
wceload.exe "%1" /askdest
but there is no param. for default=SD
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5090353&postcount=74
I reckon you need a wceload.exe replacement, or to make a mortscript to click on SD option every time for you.
Anyway advice on that link above, that SD apps usually don't need re-installing is right too
Other option would be forgot the cab. make a zip file of all files and reg file and use mortscript to import them.

It is easy to zip all my cabs in one zip file. How do I create a reg file & how do I import them with mortscript & what do I do after importing them ?

you got it wrongly, the last option was not using CAB at all.
I don't know what you are trying to do. Hard to guess. Why would you want to install on SD on the first place?
In my case, I am placing maps and files which programs can only use from SD, I have them in zip and unzipping with 7zip which accepts plenty of arguments.
You know that CAB is something like zip. You don't need to use CAB and can have the same results. And if you creating those cab yourself, why not just create zips. And you have it compressed better too.
- what is reg? file containing registry entries. if you don't have any you don't need that.
- nothing to do after
- for files:
you place all files in folders in this zip file, starting with "Storage Card"
this will check SD card, if it's present and then unzip file "file.zip"
I have this file and 7zG.exe files in ROM-windows folder, but you can change that below.
for this script to run you need mortscript.exe and 7zip programs, they are free
==
SetMessageFont(17, "Tahoma" )
While( not DirExists("\Storage Card"))
SleepMessage( 99, "Insert SD card", "SD card missing", false, DirExists("\Storage Card"))
EndWhile
RunWait("\windows\7zG.exe"," x \windows\file.zip -y")
I am not that knowledgeable technically. I do not not create Cabs. All I am trying to do is figure out a way to have the cabs I have installed silently on the SD after I flash any new ROM. I place all my cabs on Storage Card in folder XDA_UC/SD. This is not a silent installation. It needs user intervention as on each cab installation, it prompts me to select where to install to (device or SD Card). I am very humble when it comes to reg files & stuff like that. I do not know how to write them or how to use them afterwards.
I have always wanted my settings saved aswell to be applied on the next ROM installation. Thanks to NRG, his ROMs come with Settings Export app that simplifies things but exporting all settings to Storage Card in folder XDA_UC & accordingly it is applied at new ROM installation.
why do you want to install to SD card?
What pda you have? Are you low on internal memory?
I only put an app on SD if I had less then 5MB internal free.
You should use your internal memory for programs as it's faster and better protected against lost clusters and unfinished writes.
And to use SD for personal data, as pictures, mp3 as it's easier to make backup of it and access speed doesn't matter there so much.
There is no reason keeping more then 5MB free of internal memory.
A time ago I put update of opera on SD, once when it crashed, it damaged file structures and I lost half of my data on SD.
You can have silent installs to internal memory.
-
Other thing is, as someone wrote before, for most of the apps you don't need to install again on SD card if they are still there. Before you reflash, backup
folder \windows\Start Menu and after reflash, copy it back.

Installed Att Navigator on Card...

Just wondering if I did something wrong...installed Att Navigator to card to save room on phone. If I go to file folder and find navigator it works fine, but when I try to copy the .exe file over to the phone as a shortcut so I can find it in programs, it won't load properly...where should I put the file so it will start up properly without searching it up with file folder everytime i want to use it....
Thanks
use Total Commander, its a free file explorer. Select the Att navigator .exe from storage card then under the file menu there is an option to create a shortcut then it asks you where you would like to place it. In your case under Windows\Start Menu\Programs then whichever subfolder you'd like.
OR
Connect to activesync, browse your device to where the att nav .exe is and right click it, create shortcut, then move the shortcut to where you want it.
If you need more info, just search for create shortcut there are a bunch of relative threads.
thanks for the help
