Hello there,
Recently I almost had my BA dead. Fortunately, I've managed to save it and now I'm facing a great problem. I'm so tired and I can't think of any solution, I need it fast that's why I'm asking you.
My phone during the "good times" was named something like WM_blbabla. I had all my contacts and calendar synchronised and it worked perfectly well. After disaster (i had to reinstall OS), I named my phone with some other blablabla, and although all info is still in my Outlook 2007, I can't manage to force contacts to sync with the phone. Whatever name I try, Outlook cannot send all these contacts to my phone (it doesn't create any new personal file though). How can I restore this data to my phone?
I hope you can all understand me - data is in outlook, my phone after synchronising doesn't want to download it. how do i do it
mmm, have you tried to name your ba the same as before?
that probably wouldn't help, i call my device the same name after each hard reset and every hard reset, still the old partnership needs to be deleted.
maybe you should try this: since your device seems to be rather empty these days, hard reset it again, and before even connecting it to the pc, make a backup of your outlook data file (outlook.pst) but don't copy it, move it some place else. then go to activesync or synchronisation center, depending on your os, delete all your former partnerships. now you have a clean system, open outlook, it will give you an error message, that no outlook.pst was found and if it was relocated you should give the new location, try not to do that, but let outlook make a new one, if that doesn't work, google and download an empty outlook.pst fitting your outlook version, remember, since you backed up the old one, no mail or pim information is lost. import that. if that does not work, re install outlook.
my point is: have an empty outlook, have an empty activesync and an empty device, then set up the partnership for sync and sync it, make sure to set all the options like you want them, plus the "overwrite on the device" option, when this empty syncing went well, disconnect your device, kill outlook and activesync overwrite your empty .pst with your old one, this time copying it (to still have a backup) with your old one, restart outlook and activesync or your entire pc, whatever might work best, then connect your phone. if the "empty sync" worked, your full sync with actual data will also work, and within, say, 20 minutes for this entire process, you have all your pim data restored, and then, please do yourself the favour and expecting possible future sync issues, like with some of the newer roms, use pim backup to keep a backup of your mobiles information.
this was just the result of a minor brain storming session, please don't judge me, in case your problem is so complex, this wouldn't fix it. but i guess it would still help you find the errors.
good luck

With the simmanager, I can copy the phonebook on my sim to contacts.
But is there a way to reverse it too? I mean copy some contacts to my sim?
Thanks in advance
Hi
this is a very interesting question, I would need the same and was wandering about how to do it ...
anyone any idea ???
ciaoo
Isidar
In Contacts, if you tap and hold on one or more selected contacts it allows you to save to SIM.
Thnx DCS!!
You're the master
only one word:
GREAT - you are great
tanks
can you please explain how to do it step-by-step as my screen has broken :S or how to back up to a computer..?
Thanks heaps
the normal way to back up contacts or pim data to the pc would be: sync it!, put it in the cradle, set up a partnership, then all your pim data (except sms) will end up in your outlook and can be synced with any other device (replacement i guess). another way would be pim backup. but exactly how broken is your display, because your suggestion to back up on the device itself would require, that you at least see something!?
to get to the step by step part (in case your display shows information, but is maybe without touch function):
1. go to this site and download mymobiler (to control your device from your pc): http://www.mymobiler.com/
2. install it to the pc, it will install on the ppc automatically, once connected to the pc
3. if that worked, you should be able to see the device's screen on the pc and control the device with mouse and keyboard, so avoiding your screen problem
4. to the actual backup: go to http://www.dotfred.net/ and download pim backup 2.8 for your os, either the wm2003 or the "wm5 and up" version
5. unzip the package
6. copy the exe to your device
7. start it using mymobiler
8. choose data to back up, in your case the contacts (and maybe a little more)
9. pick the location, where to put the backup file
10. start the backup.
11. once it's done access that location and copy the backup file to your pc
12. through your broken device out of the window
13. take a new device, connect that to the pc, copy the pimbackup exe and the backup file onto it
14. start pim backup, pick restore, pick your backup file and hit start
15. as soon as it's done, your contacts, mail, calendar, whatever you picked to back up in the first place is restored to another device and possibly another os
if you don't have a new device yet, maybe you should think about just syncing the device with outlook, because your pim backup file will not import into other devices (non-windows mobile devices) or outlook or anywhere, you can only use it on winmo devices, while outlook pim data can be synced with nearly every brand of mobile phone, in case you pick another kind of phone as a replacement for your device.
in case you also want to know how to repair your device or where to get spare parts and so on, please re-post. for your one line i already sat here for 20 minutes writing a novel of things you maybe don't even wanna know
have fun, good luck, re-post

I'm having what I think is probably a dumb restore problem...
I was trying a ROM upgrade - turned out I actually had that version installed anyway - and so ran a full backup with ActiveSync first.
The XdaIIs is working fine, however when I restore the backup to get all my stuff back there are a bunch of things it can't restore because the files may be locked or in use...:
IS_Photo_Contacts_Group
Appointments Database
\Categories Database
IA_Photo_Contacts
Contacts Database
Tasks Database
IA_P_Contacts.dll
WLan_Service.dll
connections.exe
IA_Caller_ID.exe
IA_P_DspCID.dll
AudioGW.dll
Contacts and Appointmenst are my big miss... any ideas?
If I go to Starts->Settings->System->Memory->Running Programs the oly thing running is ActiveSync which shouldn't be using those files surely..
I'd really like to get all the info back that I had in there...

Fat Monk,
I would try a task manager other than the Running Apps option to see if maybe WM isn't bringing up all the apps running in the background.
Here's one you could try at your discretion to get at the desired files:
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/taskmaster.shtml
No joy unfortunately.
That app does seem to shut everything down, but I'm still getting the same list of files failing to restore... really frustrating.
I've browsed on the device from my PC and can see the databases directory and the appointments and contacts entries in there (the two things I'd really like to get restored) but they are not deletable, so even that brute force methd doesn't look like it will work.
Any more suggestions? Surely backing and restoring up appointments and contacts is a normal procedure...
I don;t have any extra software installed on the unit at the moment (other than having run xda_unlock_all to get rid of the SIM lock), so other than 'Today' I wouldn't have thought anything else would have locked these databases.
It's pretty annoying that the two most important things on a n organiser can be lost so easily... please help...

try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=34508&highlight=backup+contacts
For some reason the contacts lists on my MDAIII only goes up to the letter M. On Outlook they are all still there beyond M, but a sync doesn't detect any missing contacts. If I edit one of them in Outlook [deliberately change a number temporarily] then it gets synced, but I can't incorrectly edit all my contacts or I'll forget what I changed!
Is there a way of making ActiveSync re-transfer the whole database of contacts from the PC?
Thanks.
hi mattross,
1) try to remove partnership and create it again.
2) check if you have latest ActiveSync.
if nothing helps, you can try this:
get this Backup tool: http://handster.com/product.php?id=29
Backup your device, but without PIM data (use 'Custom backup')
Hardreset device, restore data and synch from your desktop PIM data.
Cheers,
Victor
Made a stupid mistake and deleted the contacts shortcut in my startup folder. I then loaded softkeys! I now have no way of going back to my contacts on the right softkey. I have looked throughout my windows folder for the pcontacts and I can't find it. I love Black 2.0 and won't go back! Don't want to have to reset for this stupid mistake. Can someone help or post their contacts shortcut here. Thanks!

You can create the link yourself with...
:MSCONTACTS?outres.dll,-10000
and then put the shortcut in any place.
Thanks for the reply....I am still in the dark about your answer....do you mean to place this in the registry or somewhere else. I hate to sound like such a noob.
I got it....thanks for the help! You guys are awesome
Contacts won't open!!
I recently upgraded to Black pro 2.0. I love it! However, I used spb backup 1.5.5 to backup my pim info (mainly contacts). Now, when I restore my pim I can no longer open contacts. I tried using the softkey, tried openning it using the phone utility. I tried going back to 2.11 ROM... but the problem persists. I even tried to use other backup programs but still come across the same problem. Other programs that use the contacts database (like Vbirthday) can't access the contacts either. I have Agendus installed and when I go to the contacts in the Agendus menu all my contacts are there, so I think this is a problem in the shell or maybe a registry fix would do the trick... I don't know. I appreciate any help.

Id strongly advise NOT to use spb backup....there are such differences in the new Black ROM that restoring a backup can cause allsorts of problems.
The BEST thing you can do is to get yourself signed up for an exchange account somewhere like mail2web....you get push email but more importantly for you the contacts are synced......so even after a hard reset all it takes is a quick sync and your contacts/calendar/tasks and emails are back in the device.

Thanks for the reply! But I was actually hoping for a way to restore my contacts from my storage card, since I have over 300 contacts it would take me too long to type it all back again. There must be a way to fix this problem. Well... I'll keep trying to find an answer; thanks anyway.

Can you export with Agendus and then HR and import?
I'm saying cause seems that restore with SPB Backup dosn't work with contacts in the way it must to do. I try to use in the past, and finally take all my critical information to an exchange server activesync.

Before I upgraded to Black Pro 2.0, SPB backup would work fine even with contacts. I never had any problems with WM5 1.35 ROM. What do you mean by HR? (sorry if this is a stupid question).

HR = Hard Reset
when you say you never had any problem, means that you tested to restore the same backaup before, and this same backup now in Black 2.0 dosn't work?
Or you are trying to restore diferents backups?

Same backup. Won't work in Black 2.0. I did what you suggested (exported a contact from Agendus to my storage card in csv format), HR but can't (don't kknow how to) import it neither with contact nor with Agendus.
Maybe I should just downgrade to WM5 1.35 again. Could anyone tell me how? I tried running the upgrading utility for 1.35 ROM but it doesn't recognize the usb connection. I thought it might be a problem with the SPL 1.40 Olipro and changed to 1.10 Oli... still the same problem. I tried changing it to 1.10 MGF but mtty won't recognize the usb connection either. It's not a problem with my usb port because everything else works fine, including the phone syncronization. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks mrvanx! I'll try it later. But first, one last attempt to solve the problem... maybe the culprit is not Black 2.0 but radio 1.38.

I was wondering why people advise an exchange account instead of simply syncing with outlook. I use outlook to sync contacts and appointments and it works well as a backup... After my Black VI upgrade simply connect and sync. So am i missing something ?

I think you can Import your exported CSV into Outlook, and then sync with TyTN trought ActiveSync.

There are same advantages doing with exchange (like i see):
First of all, you can sync in any place, trought GPRS or 3G, so you dosn't need be connected to your PC to restore your information.
Second, the servers normally has their backup policy, so your information is more secure.
Thirt, every time you change one elemment in contacts or calendar, this change sync on the fly to server, so your information is the same in server and in ppc everytime.
After three years of use, this is the most secure method i find to take this information secure and avaylable.

Thanks for the tips. I went back to WM5 1.35, restored my info with SPB backup and it worked. So I syncronized with Outlook, went back to Black 2.0 and syncronized again... contacts and tasks back to my device and working fine. Now I'll see about this exchange mail. By the way... which is the best one? P.S.: could this problem I had be something of interest to Jasjamming? Since Black is his ROM and had some compatibility issues with various backup programs... maybe he would like to have a look at it. Thanks again.
Hi everybody.
I really need your help on this!
After a fresh PC install I synced my phone with Outlook via Mobile Device Center.
Problem is, my Outlook addressbook on my PC was almost empty - and now, all my phones contacts have been deleted!!!
And I don't have a backup of the newes contacts.
I know it is possible to restore deleted information on most storage devices.
Does anybody of you guys have experience on how to possible do that on a WM6 device?
Where does WM6 normally store the data? What software could I use to restore deleted Information?
PLEASE HELP.
Thanks a lot,
t.
You might be out of luck, since it probably didn't delete the PIM file. It only deleted records in the table of that file. Have you sync'd with any other computer? MS Live? etc. Your contacts still may be on the other devices.
Otherwise, I think your outta luck. Sorry
Chris
I had this once and i found back my contacts in MSN in the "deleted contacts". If you haven't synced with MSN, i think you better start to look for some new friends

there isnt any data recovery software for windows mobile trust me ive looked there is software to recover simcard info
http://www.datadoctor.biz/sim-card.html
I had the same problem kinda.. were your contacts on your simcard at anypoint?
If so you could always get a simcard data recovery software and usb thumbdrive for simcards. U need to instal the recoverysoftware on your pc and to get you simcard to recognise on your pc thats were the thumbdrive come into play.
This happened to me when I switched to Vista, totally unexplained loss of all contacts. I feel for you man, I was lucky and had most of them backed up on an online service.
thx for all your replies guys - managed to restore most of my older contacts - but the newer ones seem to be lost - dammit.
well, lets move on
I use the PIM backup to backup my contacts/sms's/recently called lists.. I set it to back my things every day and to keep 3 recent backups. I keep my backup files in storage card so if I have to do a hard reset -ill get my contacts etc. back without computer. Thisway I avoided similar problem(just had to restore the backup with PIM backup).
PIM Backup is the best choice. Synchronization with Outlook only is dangerous - have bad experience too...
Hi
Check your deleted items in outlook on your pc. I have sometimes found activesync deletes items from my phone but they go into the outlook deleted items.
Shaks
I recently upgraded from XP to Vista and the same thing happened. I didn't back anything up either. I got lucky though, my old files from xp were saved in a folder called windows.old, went in there and found my .pst file(outlook) and placed it in the vista outlook folder and got everything back...now I backup with PIM Backup daily.
