Best ROM? - HTC Excalibur

I want to know which ROM is worth downloading and upgraded to? I've upgraded my phone to Kavana's 6.1, and seen all these other windows 6.5 and all that. Is Kavana the best one out right now? I mean that I want something that I can be convienient for games, being able to watch youtube (and other websites that are like youtube) FLV files, and the fastest and stable OS. Please don't flame me guys, I just got this phone a couple of days ago, and want to know who's ROM is the best.

Before you get flamed by everyone here for making this thread, I'm gonna tell you there is no best rom. Like we have mentioned to the 100 people that asked this same question before you, it comes down to preference, and taste, every rom we got here are good roms, but the choice is up to the user, to decide which is best. So start flashing and you shall find what siuts you best.

Correct. I would suggest looking at both the "default installed" apps and also look at a few screen shots to see what you would prefer.
There are some differences, so taking the time to research each WM6.5 ROM will save you, possibly, a headache in the end.

mods, do your thing!

I thought this was the What is the Best Rom Thread on the Best Rom?....

Ermmmm......It's all about preference. As I have said many times before. Sorry, I am just a little jet lagged. I finally made it to Eastern Germany, and I don't like the looks of it so far.
It depends on what you want to do with your rom. You want speed, go with NRG, You want looks, and speed, a lil, go with ookba's, You want the daily diet, go with Kavana, you want aesthetics, (how do I spell that?) go with Ricky's .
It is all a personal preference. You have to try each one out and suit your taste my friend. No one ROM has ever suited my taste. If I could combine them all into one, I would happily (again a wrong spelling I fear) do it. But each one has it's own style.
Kind of like a girl. You aren't satisfied with just one until you find the one to fit your every compassion. And I am just misspelling words all over the place tonite, but you have to forgive me, I have been on an 28 hour plane ride. Not one suits your desire until you find the perfect one. You have to try them all out friend, each and every one, until you are at least happy with one.

Yeah I just tried to install ooaka's latest one and now my phone is stuck at the windows mobile screen... Theres nothing I can do now huh?
EDIT: Nevermind i figure it out, just close the thread if u have to. Thanks skyline for giving me some info for which rom does what.

Try to hard reset your phone and refresh again. If that doesn't work try using bootload method mentioned in the forum
Good luck

tmobile windows 5.0 is the best..
personally i spent a week with each rom to see which is the best: and they all were equally good. i just wish there were some way they could combine it. like it was said b4 each cooker had their personal flair on their rom. make sure you try ALL

Yeah, I've found out that ooaka's wm6.5 evolution is perfect for me. Well thanks alot guys for the help, I appreciate it! One more thing, why do a lot of people recommend using opera mobile or mini, instead of IE? I tried searching around but all i can get is that IE is slower, and opera uses java? Lighten me up a bit plz.

Thats just it, IE is slow, clunky, has limited options, and dosent render some web pages very well. Opera is alot faster, user friendly, and overall is a better browsing experiance. My moto Q9h has opera built in as its default browser. I think AT&T was too afraid to release a smart phone with only IE.

Thanks alot for the info man, I appreciate it . I think I'm going to try out opera, because I am actually using it for my computer.

One more thing guys, which one is better opera mini or mobile ?

i'm happy to see this thread stray away from which rom is best... that's just an unfair question, and i take it kind of personal. though i'm not a cooker, (more like an alter of pre-existing fun ) i see it like people trying to turn the chef against each other. and that's just not how it's goning to be here! if more people would use the search engine they would see that there are a number of threads already like this. don't get me wrong, i'm no model member. i just don't like it when threads like this pop up. so now that i'm done with my rant, continue enjoying the pretty things this place has to offer.

I like your sig haha the best one yet!
To cksnah I use Opera mini. I dont think I ever used Opera Mobile.

dam guys just calm down, its like ur going to kill me lol. But yea, I'm going to try and use opera mini. Also thanks to those who actually helped instead of giving me answers that doesn't go with my question .

I think the big difference between the 2 flavours of Opera is -
Opera mini routes all its' traffic through their servers and compresses it before sending it on to your device. For general surfing this is really, really good as everything is faster and less data passes through any data allowance you have. But, you cant access any UN/PW sites with it so banking, webmail etc don't really happen.
Opera mobile does allow the use of cookies and so can be used for such sites. But pages are less compressed and therefore larger to download.
I think that's right.
Something like it anyway ...

Ya, that is pretty much the gist of it. I use Opera Mobile for online bill pay when I can't get to my computer. I like the speed and page load time of Opera Mini. I say install both cksnah252, and use at will.
This might help with the breakdown of the differences between the two - -

I would avoid Mr Browns' part at the moment, it's cold and damp but I believe every day is a holiday in Sr Berlusconis' Italy, a short train ride from your present position. Have fun.

I have from the Neonbabies German band here Annette Humpe, she says live life and build your phone around it.
I guess I discovered the nightlife. God bless me. It is supposed to rain tomorrow and the next and next day. Kind of what I experienced in the good ol' south of carolina.
I think I am going to make a blog post or something. I must just be a hick of the states, but My life in Germany has been great so far. I have met peeps I never knew I could, and have been warned not to meet the peeps I couldn't. It is just all disco. I visited this one discoteque, dang i can't spell it, but there all the famous peeps there. I will report back. This one famous one, I won't say her name , say her name, lol, was weeping with me at the death of MJ.
Loves you all, loves German bistros and beers. God bless America and Germany. Happy fourths of July.

Get a today launch application & some heavily copyright protected iPhone icons...and you're set...just don't let Apple's legal eagles get you! They don't like people 'borrowing' their icons...I think they sent out lots of letters...probably a reason not to put them in ROMs? Then again, if you don't use their icons, you're not doing anything wrong.
I read about that somewhere... we should change the icons just a bit.... it would be fun to see the looks on their faces. Im not a lawyer but i think if u change the background of an icon from white to an off white u can get away....
just a suggestion

Cingular 8525 3D Effects 'rom'

I have the 8525 and would love to have the best rom ever especially while this new iphone is coming out. Is there a rom out there that has the best 3D effects for the phone or is someone working on a rom like that. because if we can get are 8525 to have the 3D effects I think that there won't be any phone that can touch ares. the iphone and the new touch phone, that's the only thing '3D effect' they have on us... please let's make everyone know why we are sticking with are 8525's. Thank You!
What the heck please obey forum rules and use the SEARCH FUNCTION
searching forums
I've installed so many ROMS, searched the forums. I know what he means. We've all see the youtube demo of the flashy screen changes. I think I have the perfect rom then its not. Reinstalling new roms and restoring the 50+ apps sucks every time. Yeah, I have SPB backup, but it's worthless on apps with new registry settings.
I've been using modded roms way back on many phones for SEVERAL years. The Iphone will be the best / current phone out. Can't wait till we crack into it. (I know everyone is excited about this.)
I personally use my PDA/phone for business and need everthing to work, and keep on working.
Currently 8525.
I still am craving a true VGA phone with a 850 GSM. The QVGA seems stuck as the main choice.

umm... speak for yourself BigBad... I'm not excited about the iphone at all.. My 8525 does everything it does pluse more. Videos and music? yah we can do that... oh missing the 8gig or whatever? so what, i use orb and have access to my network hard drive in my house which lets me view/listen to 120 gigs of videos/music
The iphone i see it is for consumer whores... Did u see the demo on installed apps through safari? they skip!
i think its a worthless device put together by a briliant team that knows how to suck every penny out of mr. and mrs. average joe!
And NO i am not one of those apple hating windows hard core freaks. I'm currently writing this on my macbook with my hermes connected to windows xp which is running on my macbook through parallels.... i have the best of both worlds and don't see an iphone entering mine anytime soon!

TouchFlo on Hermes
I Phone not up to Par
The i-phone device thing is inferior in many ways. The only thing it has on the Hermes is that it looks really cute and colorful. The processor on it is only 300 mhz, why go backwards, only 2g. Connectivity-wise not even, please. But again it is cute looking.
My theory...
You know, what if posts like this current thread

are actually people working for MS trying to piss off the chefs enough so that they will stop sharing their ROMs? Just a thought.
Hate to bring life to a dead thread...but will the hermes ever support touchflo? Is it a hardware limitation?

ROM Advice
Hey All!
I haven't been following the rom scene lately and I don't wish to start a flame war on the topic.. I'm just interested in some general information on what different roms are available form my Dash. If there is an existing post, please direct me too it as I have been trolling but did not find anything terribly informative on the topic.
I've been experiencing weird issues on my 6.0 standard rom. ICScontrol not working, wm9 codecs not working and i figure its time to try something new..
I'm looking for features of the rom, a how-to on installing it (already familiar with flashing, no big woop.. just don't wanna brick it), and what roms are available for the s60.
Information is much appreciated!
Thanks,
Nick

If you need anything for a restore, the Original ROMs are in my sig.
These are all, of course, 5.0 and 6.0 releases. Nothing interesting, just useful if you are stuck at the bootloader, need to restore for a warranty etc.

Hah, i don't think i'll have to worry about my warranty any more.. I was impressed with the Dash for the following reason..
A few months ago I was visiting a friend, I pulled my phone out and set it on the arm of the chair I was sitting in. My friend asked me to hand him something within my reach, when I reached for it I knocked my phone off the chair... Directly into a BUCKET OF WATER!!!! As I watched my phone sink to the bottom I thought "WHO KEEPS A BUCKET OF WATER NEXT TO THEIR CHAIR?!?!?!?"..
The phone remained on even after I pulled it out.. I quickly yanked the battery out and patted it dry. I let it sit for a few hours and also put it over the heater vent in the car.
Surprisingly, it survived! No weird behavior, no power issues (other then my now swollen battery).. The phone survived! Holly crap!
So needless to say, I am impressed by this durability of this phone..
IT WORKED!
Wooha! It worked.. Just gettin into all the features.. But I love it so far!!!
Thanks for all the help, add this to another success story!
WM6 to WM6.1 - What are the Pros & Cons?
Hello,
I'm a long time member but just haven't had the time to come on here. Some of you might remember me from before. I haven't had the chance to upgrade from WM6 to WM6.1 - Can someone please be kind enough to list the pros & cons? Also, are all applications compatible from before and finally, how's the ROM speed and reception?
Thanks in advance
In my opinion the biggest pro would be the sliding panels theme. I can't think of any cons, but I'm sure some crybaby will. lol
Pros: What Organic said. New PIe that sucks 20% less. Threaded messaging is smart. Tons of well cooked ROMs that exploit it.
Cons: You can't get it in an official ROM from your vendor, so you will have to look up the settings for Internet, MMS and follow the instructions when doing the first cold boot. OMG.
just install it. no if, and, or buts about it.
well, some crybaby did say that the radio isnt better, but worse. only 1 crybaby though. IMO i think its better, but i never tested. i would say its not better or worse.
on the bright side, its faster, more solid, more and better apps, more memory....umm better battery life? i cant confirm this tho. i have ricky's rom v17 i think and im happy with it. i can tell u its waaaaaaaayyy better then WM6.
One more in favor Just installed last night ricki´s rom v20a. Just awesome. Didn´t find a glitch yet. Very complete set of applications... i only miss a rss reader but there´s plenty of them out there. At least this version as a connection wizard so i didn´t had to look for mms, etc, settings in the net.
So far i only think it has less programs memory available after a reboot. In my case a little more than 17mg. With WM6 i had about 19mg. Not a big thing...
In the end, is too good to let it slide...
If I wanted to update my HTC 620 to WM6.1 where would I get the firmware to do it. I am new to this but would like the options of sliding screens etc. any help would be gratefully accepted.
first thing you should do is read one of the many many many many threads about your very question.

Sorry mate, honestly, ... trying it yourself is the only way you can judge, read the wiki, and try out different roms, as i said what is good for me may not be good for you. So go try them all out and make up your mind from experience. I have had my phone for two months and I have been through honestly about 20 or so roms before i made up my mind, each chefs have got their own style and yeah you need to determine what style suits you.
Thanks alot, will definitely do so
One more question...In my research on the P4350 which uses the 200mhz OMAP cpu, i read that there is an app to overclock (and declock) the device, does the TyTN have a similar app??

If you want to keep your device for another couple of years, then no, it is not recommended. it is doable, but it would not be doing your device any favour.
Well since the reviews i read all said the TyTN is powerful enough, im actually more interested in declocking the device when i dont need the power, to save battery life

hmm, you need to try the roms available, and once you get applications such as BT GPS, BT Stereo, MP3 etc going, plus the touchflo extension you mentioned, it ain't all that powerful.
These chefs have done their best to make the most out of a device that is 2 years old. so ... yeah it isn't that powerful, but yes you will determine that when you have run a couple of things on the hermes have fun, ...
Starbase has the cab on his 4shared site. I have had it before, but find it useless, the touchflo that schaps has is better for finger scrolling and quick landscape mode switches however.
Good to see more South Africans here. (From South Africa myself). As Zocster said, just try the roms out. Been flashing my TyTN at least once a week. Just remember to Hard-SPL first.

Glad someone remembered.....
lol thanks guys!!!
Been reading the guides and the wikis, will definitely hardSPL first
first of all make hardspl ! it is the first thing you need to flash into your tytn....what you meen about -toch flo- ? many component may be instaled on any rom. personaly I use 3ppc.net russian 6.1 rom, whith htc home today plugin (one part of tochflo) included. for finger scroling I use ftochFlo, cube not use at all - personaly I found it useless....(anyway - there are some custom cube on 'hacking and developing' section of developers, as for me it much better than original.)
about overclock. sumsung procesors (which use tytn) is wery bad in frequency control. looks like time generator somehow connected whith main frequency - when you changing it, a lot of bugs appear....for example - if you overclocked cpu, you will notice that music/video/e.t.c. will run more fast that it needed. no need to worry about cpu power consumtion - it low anyway for samsung cpu. much more buttary will eat 3g, wifi, backlight e.t.c.

Strongly thinking about buying the tilt2

I've been on some other forums wondering what phone to buy, and it seems the tilt2 is the best for me. That being said, I'm not totally sold on it. For you people who've had it long enough, would you recommend it? I'm committed to learning about the best ROM to install over it, so I'm going to try to get away from as many freezes as possible. Of course, I was recommended to *this* wonderful site!
Does anyone have a good place to start for learning on here? There's a freakton of information on here, and I have no problem reading through lots of info, but I don't know where to start!
I would be much appreciative. Thanks!
Welcome to forums
Yes!
Go and get it!!
Rhodium is the best hardware keyboard device to this date!
I´m very happy with mine
This is my 3rd HTC device. With my big fingers, a hardware keyboard is a MUST. The Tilt had a good keyboard, the Fuze had a better keyboard, the Tilt2 has the best keyboard for someone like me. And now that I have to have bifocal glasses , the larger screen is MUCH appreciated.
I say get it as well. I had the Fuze, AT&T's version of the original Touch Pro, for a week and hated it. I just got a Tilt 2 and it's a much better device. I've been using it for a few days and haven't noticed any freezing or bad lag. I've loaded a few programs and done a few registry tweaks and so far I've been very happy with the results. Slingplayer Mobile looks great on this device and I get GPS locks in seconds in both Google Maps and Bing Mobile. The touch screen is very responsive and TouchFlo 3D has really improved in a year. I noticed some complaints about the Widcomm Bluetooth stack but the phone paired right away with my Motorola headset and the handsfree system in my Acura RL and has worked flawlessly with both.
I plan on deleting as many of the stock bloatware programs as I can to free up some memory, but so far the stock AT&T ROM has been fine. The keyboard is awesome - I don't mind having the symbols in the top row as I seem to use them more when typing emails. This is a really nice device.
So what's the favorite ROM around here? Might be a week (or a few evne) before I pick this up, and I want to make sure I have my technology down so I don't keep on flashing.
I have a Motorola Q9h at the moment.... it's what got me hooked on windows mobile. I couldn't believe that I could actually edit the registry! So yeah, I'm all about tweaks, but I remember my first couple weeks and I was all over the place trying to find all the tweaks I needed.
I'm hoping to go into this next move prepared.
My advice is this - make sure you try the phone out first. Try to have a conversation in a moderately noisy environment and see if you can hear the other person, even with the volume on full.
Loud enough for you? If so, then get the phone. Everything else about it is awesome.
If not loud enough, forget it, find a different phone made by a company who doesn't assume all their customers have bionic ears. It will drive you crazy and frustrate you every phone call, and there is no fix.
The best rom for me which is closest to stock as possible is here. I currently have been running for about a month and this is stable and great. Very close to the ATT stock rom.
It's a terrific phone, I highly recommend it. The keyboard is the best I've ever used, the screen is gorgeous, and the build quality is fantastic. If you're looking to start somewhere, I recommend the following links: XDA-Developers Wiki article on the Rhodium and Flashing your first Rhodium ROM. Of all the places to start, those are probably best. The stickies at the top of the forums are also good to read, as they often contain important information.
Also, as many will tell you, there is no best ROM. I personally like EnergyROM Leo for my purposes, but other ROMs may work best for what you prefer to do with your Rhodium. I would recommend looking in peoples' signatures and seeing what ROMs people are using, or better yet, flash them all and see what works for you. Now that that's out of the way, welcome to XDA-Developers!
Perfect Dave!! Thanks a ton!
If I could rep you guys on these boards I would!

Unless he's having specific issues or a WM veteran I don't see why you'd point him to how to flash a ROM first thing... Probably let him use the device out-of-box for a bit.

The OP was interested in information concerning cooked ROMs, and where a good place to start would be. I figured that they'd want to know the process of installing one since they were inquiring about which one they should flash, and I thought that link would be a good place to start (when concerning ROMs). It's not like they have to flash one just because I linked there, and if they'd seen the instructions already there's no harm, so I thought I was being helpful by posting a useful related link. IMO there's nothing wrong with using a device out of the box (I did for ~1 year), but the OP requested more info on ROMs and I simply gave it to them.
I've had my Tilt 2, for 2 weeks.
And I LOVE IT !!!
And i'm already a flashing whore ..........

Yeah, I've been using WM for 2 years now on my motorola q9h. The tweaking aspect is the reason I *want* to stay w/WM... and I was definitely looking for exactly what dave posted!
Also, as I indicated in a few posts, I want to know as much as I can before actually getting the phone so I can flash it, tweak it, set it up how I want it, and then not touch it so that I can keep a stable environment. I don't want to lose my messages and things...

Let's leave your mom out of this
(I'm sorry, I have a chronic condition involving mom jokes)
well.... I just picked up the tilt 2 . it's pretty cool so far but I do notice all the lag people have been talking about... will prolly just take some getting used to.
My advice would be to try and get the out-of-the-box system working, install a few apps / shells / tweaks, figure out what's important to you and then flash. Pretty much any stock rom will be lag-free or lag-minimal. There's a lot of good ROMs / chefs out there. Flashing several will definitely whet your appetite.

After owning this thing for awhile.. good LORD does it freeze up a lot :/. I mean, I get used to it and "deal" with it, but it becomes painfull noticeable when my friend has his droid out.
Maybe it's time to start looking into those homebrews for better efficiency, heh.

I rarely reset my phone for freezing issues, especially on sense 2.1 ROMs. Sense 2.5 ROMs maybe once a week at most. At the end of the day to get a phone that more closely functions how you want it to, a custom ROM is the way to go.
I will say the most stable release I ever used was the stock VZW 6.1 TF3D 2.0. I could run that thing for weeks and still idle at 49%.

There's a couple of things that should be done with all new TP2's to help reduce memory hogging and help performance in general:
First, run the first two cabs below. One switches off push internet for a big resource savings. The other one switches on dynamic memory allocation, which does a much better job of freeing up memory when apps aren't using it.
Next, run the Advanced Config cab below...it's a utility that gives you access to all sorts of deeper-level settings in the phone. When you run it, navigate to the "power management" section, and make the first 7 entries there set to "enabled (advised)"
Do a soft-reset after these, and you should see a significant reduction in memory use and lock-ups.
Lastly, use the Crud Scraper attached below...copy it to your SD card and just run the .exe from there (not your PC). It allows you to uninstall a fair amount of the bloat AT&T was generous enough to include on the phone
Some pretty good advice in this thread for new users. I've been playing with WM since well before it was WM and I've had an overwhelmingly positive experience with it, that is until i moved from the kaiser to the tilt2. I was ready to chunk it and get something else but decided to flash a few roms first. Not expecting much i was surprised by the significant performance improvements and overall appeal the device gained over the stock At&t rom.
My advice, I woudl only try "fixing" the issues with teh stock rom if you are absolutley stuck with it. if you are not stuck using the AT&T rom for some reason flash one, there are several good ones out there and all of them seem to be an improvement over the At&t rom in terms of stability and performance.
