I need a new smartphone and i think i'm going to get the Touch Pro 2 later today.
What do you guys say, should i get this one or should i wait for a future model from HTC?
What are your overal experiences for so far?
it's a super-great device, and no better are planned AFAIK, when it comes to QWERTY+decent display - there is't much to choose from.
Only the Star and the SuperStar are likely to be any better than the TP2 and there's no news on them other than that they have nvidia chipsets.
No idea what they'll even look like, but those will be some special phones!
According to AT&T there is going to be a Hardware refreash....this means that it will support windows Mobile 7....however this is in september / october when WM 7 comes out.
I am going to wait as I do not want tofind out that there is a newer version of the TP2. Once those months pass and there is no new anywhere then I will upgrade to the TP2, however thats if Toshiba don't release thier 1 GHz WM6.5 phone...
If you need it now, buy it now.
By the end of the year, we'll see new BCM2727 HD and Qualcomm Snapdragon based mobile phones with really big display, 3D acceleration, WinMo 6.5 and maybe even some with keyboards. All these *NOT* from HTC. For HTC models you may have to wait well into 2010.
But what will be the RAM/ROM configuration, hardware build quality, TF3D alternative and price - nobody knows.
As always with technology, there's always something better just around the corner, so you can theoretically postpone indefinitely.
I'm buying TP2 as soon as the shops that sell for a bit more decent price get it in stock locally. While I would have liked a faster CPU and even more RAM, I'm confident that TP2 will fill my needs for quite some time.

Agree completely! I'm getiing the TP2 as soon as it arrives at tmob usa to take advantage of it's great features. If someday when htc has snapdragon, then I'll upgrade...
Does anyone know if this will be an ATT phone and if so, when?
I second the above comments.
There are better specd devices available and due for release soon.
The only reason I went for Rhodium is
1 It's an HTC which means I can configure and tweak the hell out of it
2 It's a great looking / feeling device
3 It's an HTC which means there's unsurpassed support for it right here in these great forums.
Did I mention it's an HTC device?
Cheers,

Well there may be other devices not from HTC that are released soon and have better specs (or already have been released), but i really want a HTC phone and not something else =)
So if i wanna stick with HTC this is the best option, at least untill 2010?

What exactly do you mean? that the touch pro 2 hardware is getting updated or that a completely new phone is going to be released?
well IMHO there is nothing better out there by HTC at present and i can only highlight Beast reasons as a perfect summary for getting the device. yep there may be higher spec devices due out but will they work as well as the tp2 does? that remains to be seen. right now we have a HTC device that delivers and finally does some justice to touchflo. i too have my eyes on the toshiba tg01 but that will replace my HD and it remains to be seen if that 1ghz processor will actually enhance the device.
Mmm ok, and when exactly will devices be released with windows mobile 7 on them?

He friends - when the first Touch came out I bought it and was so unsatisfied ref. the keyboard that I changed the device - also because the perforamce was pretty slow
Let me ask you - is the No. 2 now faster and much better ???
Hi,
The touch-pro 2 has some hardware improvements, but none concerning it's speed. The software that's delivered by HTC is further optimized and is a lot faster. Also the version of the processor that's included has changed in the TD2 & TP2. This probably means that the processor has been more optimized too.
I expect the TP2 to be faster in use, because of the new well working software (Shell). Next to that, it will be easier to work with because of the bigger screen.
About the keyboard, looking at some video's about pre-releases of the phone, every reviewer says the keyboard is one of the best ever. I haven't seen any lag when people were typing.
I think normal all-day use (agenda, mail, phone, sms, etc) will be faster and more accessible. But gaming, or other 3th party software that requires a lot of horsepower,....... Just don't expect the TP2 to be a lot better/faster. But then again, htc targets the bussines world.
I suggest you look into other topics and look for reviews (youtube: touch-pro2 review), so you can see for yourself.
I'm upgrading from my Hermes . The reason why I won't wait for other 1 gigz phones? Playing 3d games, just won't work on phones cause of the louzy controls and little screen. Other than that, I can't think of reasons why I would want a 1 Gighz phone. Battery will be empty faster and it will take a year before the new processors will be fully optimized. (not to think of the heat the new processors will make)

Specifically, the drivers are believed to have been improved to address some graphics hangups. It's hard to know what any particular user means when they complain about performance.
If, peter, you're referring to the TF3D interface, you'll probably be pleased. There are a ton of video previews out there on youtube now, so head on over and watch it in action. Those videos are the next best thing to actually using one.
So what could your advice be - to wait for the new toshiba with th ebig display, take the diamond 2 or the touch 2 ???
THANKS a lot

Depends, what kind of user you are.
What kind of phone do you have now? Is it with an hardware keyboard and do you message a lot?
What do you do with you current phone? What do you like, what do you miss?
Do you put you phone in you pocket?
I'm also getting the touch pro2 because there aren't going to be many other phones with an hardware keyboard in the near future. As for only touchscreen phones, I would wait. There are comming a lot new phones in the near future.
If you have a fairly recent phone (touch pro 1 for example) I also would wait for a new phone. That's because new phones keep comming and I don't have the money to keep buying new phones.
(as for the slow touch pro 1, try some home cooked roms from this site. There are probably some real fast ones in the tp1 forum).
Does touch pro2 have an hardware keyboard ???

thats an HD2 not an TP2, HD2 is the only device from HTC which will be official compatible with WM 7.
because WM7 needs a capacitive tochscreen it will not work on TP2.

Haha, I hope they will release TP3 in time with WP7 I'm also curious about the dual core snapdragon processors which are announced with the end of this year

When I had the T-Mobile Wing they said we could not get WM6.5 and now thanks to XDA we have it. Now I have the TP2 and even though the screen doesn't support some of the command I would not be surprized if there was success in getting WM7 onto this phone (limited in functionality and may be very slow). At any rate I will be getting the HD2 on March 24 when it comes out to T-Mobile.

IMHO, the GUI is not that complex that you really need complex hardware. If MS really wanted, i believe it could run on a TP2 too (even with multitouch). 529Mhz is not that slow. And your TP2 has OPENGL 1.1? hardware which is not really used very well.
But like MS said, they put a lot of work to let the hardware and software work really together. Which in other words they say you need to buy new hardware (faster CPU, OPENGL 2.0; base ram 512MB)
Even now it could technically run on HD2, the HD2 device is not officially compliant with the 3 hardware buttons a Win7 mobile device needs (back, start , search). I wonder how to map the search button.
Let's only hope!
I am sure that if someone can get the current ROMs for the HD2, which are technically designed for a capacitive screen, to work on the TP2, I would bet money that someone will be able to port it over and make it work. We won't really know until stuff starts getting leaked. That would be great though. I would really like to give WP7 a test run before dumping $500 on a new phone!!
TP2 will be able to run WP7 (maybe there might be problems with OpenGL ES 2.0 missing). The right question is - will MS make BSP for it? I highly doubt it.

Yep me too. Although i'm gonna ditch my TP 2 as soon as I get confirmation of WM7 running on the hd2.
I saw somewhere that Windows Phone 7 will require a 1ghz processor. The HD2 has that and the Touch Pro 2 doesn't.
If someone does get Windows Phone 7 ported over, it's likely going to run a little slowly.
don't forget mandatory 4 point multitouch... that might be a problem for full functionality.
I seem to remember the guy who introduced WM7 (WPS7) saying something about the 7 series being slated for all manner of new phones including those with and without keyboards (I think he made reference to phones similar to BBs with keyboards on the face of the phones)...So unless the price of processors comes down significantly I really don't think every new phone running this 7 series OS will meet such demanding base requirements (1GHz processor, capacitive multitouch screens etc., etc.).
YES!

Touch Pro Series The Best Option HTC have!
according to several websites like: http://www.redmondpie.com/htc-hd2-to-get-windows-mobile-7-upgrade-9140128/ the HD2 will get windows mobile 7. but TP2 will most likely be up to the devs here at the XDA if they can do it. My feelings are that if they can get android going on TP2 (so far so good) then they can do windows mobile 7.
In my opinion, our devices are transition devices, most of us are waiting/hoping for a TP3 better than HD2, or at least with similar specifications as the HD2.
TP2 runs WP7, but it reminds me of my old Artemis with WM65 and TF2D, .
We´ll see it coming soon.
Cheers.
i have a blue angel runnign wm 6.5 so anything is possible especially if there is enough interest.
I understand why the move makes sense for MS but personally from what I've seen of WM7 I'm in no hurry for it to get here. Now if i could get my TP2 with a 1ghz cpu i might look at it but until the smart guys here at XDA figure out how to get past WM7's limitations i'm not in any rush to give up what I have.
It might be able to run it, but Microsoft and HTC aren't going to release anything needed to make an unofficial port happen. Sorry, but it's extremely likely that the TP2 is not going to get WM7, officially or otherwise.
And to everyone who always cites the example of Windows Mobile 6.5 running on an old device, I hate to break it to you but it's not that easy when dealing with WM7. Windows Mobile 7 is based off the Windows CE 6.0 kernel, while Windows Mobile 5 and 6.x are powered by the same CE 5.2 kernel, making a port of WM 6.x to a WM5 device pretty easy. It's much more difficult when you have a different kernel with from an OS that doesn't support most of your hardware, as it means someone has to create a BSP themselves.
No multi-tasking = No dice for me! It'd be like a downgrade! Loving my TP2 with Deep Shining Rom. I use my phone for a whole manner of things, usually business orientated. If I wanted the type of phone the Windows mobile 7 looks like it's gonna introduce, I would've bought an IPhone!
here it is he hd7 that a lot of people have been waiting for!

I would like to see ...
real pictures of the device, specifications (committed) with dualcore snapdragon and at least 16gb flash memory ... and a link to pre-order
Looks very similar to the HD2, and this is a good thing, considering that (for me) the HD2 is one of the most beautiful phones in the market. Let's hope for good specs also.
But I think I will skip Windows Phone 7, really. I don't like the Metro UI, too minimal for my tastes and it wastes a lot of screen real-estate in the home. Also I'm not very fond of C# as a language / platform. I really prefer Java. And I don't know if I could survive with the new limitations the system gives. I have always loved Windows Mobile for its flexibility and, for me, Windows Phone 7 could be the new iPhone competitor, but not the right upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5.
When I look at a phone operating system, I look at:
1) Flexibility.
2) Feature rich.
3) Opennes.
4) C/C++/Java support.
Actually, only Symbian^3 seems to achieve these 4 goals (with an eye to Meego). Other systems seems to be developed with the casual user in mind, Android included. I'll wait patiently for Windows Phone 8 hoping for a new level of flexibility, expecially in programming support. I don't want to be forced in using proprietary tools / platforms and, in 2011 and over, I really hope Microsoft will pay a f*ucking license for Java Embedded. Really good news from the JavaOne this year.
Kinda looks like my HD3 concept

too bad
Beautiful hardware. Too bad it's so locked down, limmited and crippled by WiPhone7.
It is very much the Desire HD. By the way... I called my local O2 Dealer here in Germany. He told me that the HD7 will very likely have the specifications as the Desire HD.

I never understood the point in portrait sliders. Sure it looks cool, but the keys are simply too small (so they are also useless for say games or music playback control without looking)
Otherwise I thought this looked like a killer handset from the moment it was leaked. Shame about the processor though.

The keys are same as blackberry's keys size or even larger because the screen is huge(4.1 inch)
Many devices have built-in qwerty keyboards (not sliders ex.nokia e71,Blackberry...etc) they work pretty good.
Hopefully it'll have more than a 1Ghz processor and 512MB RAM.

Dell Lightning is great indeed.
I'm concerned... My DHD is a super smartphone, but after all it's just a device that is getting "old".
I can't really say what will my next phone be. Sensation? GalaxySII?
The Sensation has good specs(although I played for a whole day with one, and it didn't seemed so fast), but lacks the beauty of the DHD.
SGS2 definitely has power on his side, and a amazing screen. But again, it's plastic body is hideos and overall seems like a larger Iphone.
So please tell me... what should I be looking at? I don't dig Sony Ericsson crapphones, nor other semimanufacturers like Motorola, LG, Huaweii or God knows what.
I guess an important question is, what do you need it for? That should inform your decision. (For me, I've never really seen the point in a dual-core phone, as I've never played a game on a phone and never will.)
Sensation and SGII getting old too - the next generation was in many previews, so wait for the future updates with better sound and displays and so on... If you want an actual smartphone, you have to buy one every two month. Dual and Quad Core are in all minds. They give you the chance for recording FULL HD Videos, navigate faster than before, play games with actual upcoming graphicchips...you must know, what you prefer. At this time the DHD has more abilities than the new HTC devices, because their resolutions are not supported by all apps. Also there are more specific roms and themes.
What do I need it for? What do you need it for? I use it at it's full potential, with games, various aps, recording, browsing, teethering etc etc.
Whoever buys a smartphone to use it a simple phone is not a normal person(no offence ).
Neo, your opinion is to wait for now. Probably you're right
I'll be very honest...I wouldn't be looking anywhere. Yes, the newer phones are more powerful, but trust me, if you upgrade, you aren't actually getting anything more. Dual core processors still aren't being utilised fully yet. The Sensation is literally nothing over a DHD with an official Sense 3.0 ROM, it's all very much the same.
To be honest, you've answered the question yourself. Stick with the DHD, you'll be happiest that way!

I know what you mean. I got my DHD when the dual core phones were coming out, on purpose; I knew it was going to be cheaper, and I knew I wasn't loosing out much. I rooted from the very start, then worried that I had made the wrong decision when the SGS2 and Sensation came out...looking at everything now though, it's pretty clear I haven't
ive been on my dhd 4 a yr now nd havent been fascinated by any of the recent phones.....although i still use stock roms.....i love the sense interface so sammy is definitely out of the question. all dual cores as i have been readng havent really been utilized yet...im eagerly anticipating sense 3.5 update....it would b a new experience smhow. other than that i guess the only phone i wish was there is an android htc portrait slider...u know smthng like the dell venue pro for WP. You can see it in my signature.. i was often unable to wait, because i wanted to test all new systems...at least the WP7 UI, before i bought my DHD. I think, WP7 style is a modern way to operate with a smartphone, but today no abilities to have an individual style. Android UI is a new form of windows mobile, not really futuristic, but i can change all i want. On the DHD it´s nearly perfect at this time.
Maybe in one year i will use again a WP7 phone, because i like many of it´s features, especially the menus inside and the live tiles (with another style). But i hope, that google won´t sleep all the time and works also on new interfaces. The last updates remind me to the times, when windows mobile was updated. I miss the really impressive changes... see, what will come in the next years.
I would wait if i were you.... even the so called dual core are being updated. Word on the street is that dual core 1.2-1.5 GHz should be the standard before the end of the year....HTC have some nice lineup comming soon
I took your advises seriously. Me and my DHD are friends for almost a year now, so it has a few scratches and dents. So, in order to complete our "new" friendship, I send it back to HTC for a complete makeover(new housing and a internal cleaning ).
Thank you guys!
