ActiveSync/Outlook and issues - Touch HD Themes and Apps

Hope somone can help me with this:
I've currently got 1 HTC Touch HD (standard Orange ROM), roughly 400 contacts and a lot of calendar/notes/tasks etc, and 2 laptops (both WinXP).
1 Laptop was previously used as the ActiveSync partner for the Touch HD - no problems, I was using ActiveSync merely to back up all my calendar/task/notes/contact entries on the phone - I didn't use Outlook (where the PIM data was copied to) for anything.
I now want to transfer my "backing up" to the 2nd laptop and this is where I'm running into problems. I cannot seem to setup ActiveSync to understand that it is to copy information into the 2nd laptop. I cannot turn on the "contacts" checkbox at all (it's greyed out) for the 2nd "desktop" (ActiveSync's terms), and it won't Sync any of the other items that are checked (calendar/task/notes) - it tells I've logged into Outlook in the wrong "profile" (whatever that is*)
If I try to remove the 1st laptop ActiveSync profile, or uncheck the contacts checkbox, I get a warning error that this will REMOVE all contacts on my Pocket PC - something that I REALLY do NOT want to do!
I found the "pim.vol" file in the root directory of the Touch HD, which I thought was an uptodate copy of all PIM information - but it isn't - somehow in checking that, or messing about with all the Outlook and Active Sync stuff, I've lost "some" information - a couple of repeating tasks have lost information from the associated "notes", and I deliberately deleted a couple of contacts (no loss) to see if the "pim.vol" was indeed a copy of the information - and in copying "pim.vol" back from the storage card those contacts haven't returned.
What am I missing? (apart from a Polaris hardware locked onto the Redmond campus)
Can someone help me here - I'm going to be losing laptop 1 to my daughter soon (so will have to strip all personal info off it), and I really need somewhere to backup my Pocket PC PIM data. (I can't afford to buy SPB Backup (I would prefer to backup the data to a seperate device anyway) - yes I know it's not much - but I can barely afford to pay the Panther45 bill at present - everything is getting more expensive, and wages are static, and I need to eat! )
* secondary rant - why can't Outlook split itself over different WinXP user accounts?? is it just me, or is this a major failing??

Why don't you try PPC PIMbackup 2.8 (http://www.dotfred.net/default.htm) ? It's free

ok - this gets weirder...
My Work pc is a Vista machine with "Windows Mobile Device Center" on it - I have NOT setup any relationship between this Pc and the Touch HD, and (up until now) I've been able to connect the two, and be able to access the ROM on the Touch HD via the windows explorer UI - it's handy for copying CABS and other files down - but there's no Sync relationship.
NOW this connection just fails utterly, and ActiveSync on the phone won't even run!
has anyone any idea what's going on here?? is it hard reboot time??
Ktsak - cheers - will check that out.

ok - after failing to connection to the Vista machine I did a soft-reset, and now my PIM data has TOTALLY disappeared!!
Diary and Contacts GONE, and TouchFlo will NOT boot!!
What the **** is going on here??? (please pardon the term, but I'm getting very near to lauching this thing through a window. I RELY on the diary on the Touch HD, now Microsoft have destroyed it!! )

ok - getting close to launching this thing now.
I've done a soft reboot and lost EVERYTHING in the PIM. Contacts and Calendar are EMPTY.
I also have some odd things going on with my connection - I'm in a 3g available area and (apparantly) getting no reception - so something has happened to the connection as well.
Any ideas????

3 Simple Questions - Please Help!

1. I know I can import Contact information from SIM card to device, but is there any way I can do the reverse since over time contacts changes?
(I have a back-up phone which is nothing more then just a plain ole' Samsung - so if ever I need to switch from my BA device to the phone I have an updated phone book on my SIM card)
2. Recently the battery came off my phone for a few short seconds while in a purse. Upon putting it back on I realized the phone did a hard reset! (I don't know why either!) The purse was practically empty (two wallets and receipts) and had nothing in it that could have started the reset. When I got home and tried to sync, ActiveSync coudln't recognize the phone and wanted to start a new partnership. Anything I can do in the future to prevent this from occuring again - Activesync not recognizing the phone?? I had to delete the partership the computer and start over.
3. In Outlook I have two Contacts list (1 personal and 1 business). I would like to keep them seperate but it seems like Activesync will only sync one contact list at a time. I know I can assign categories and sort them but life is easier keeping them seperate. Any way to do this or a program that wil do this?
THANKS!!!
BUMP!!!
Sorry to do this but some one out there can answer at least one of these questions right???
THANKS!

I have an MDA compact (Magician), and there I can simply mark the contacts I want to copy to the SIM in my list of contacts, then tap-n-hold and select "Save to SIM".

Yes. Make sure that you regularily do backups using Active Sync. Then, next time a hard reset happens, connect your PocketPC to the PC and choose Guest Partnership. Now, just go to Extras - Save/Restore in Active Sync, and restore a backup. After the restore completed, disconnect the PocketPC, soft-reset it, then re-connect. It will now simply use your old partnership.

I do not know of any way to do that. Maybe someone else does - if yes, I would also be very interested!

First, yes, you can have 2 separate contact lists in Outlook. Just create new folder "that will contain contacts" or something to that effect.
Next, download the MS add-on that will let you sync 2 lists. Maybe part of the powertoys or something like that. Definitely out there. Seen it.

Thanks....Tadzio!!! Your info was a real big help!!
Has any one heard or found this Outlook add in? I searched all over Microsoft's website and couldn't find it???
What is a power toy??
Thanks!

Keeping contacts after PPC2003->WM5 upgrade

Hi!
I've been researching the last, dunno, 6hours or so...
I'm quite desperate now, so here's what's up:
-I use a HTC BlueAngel (MDA III)
-made a full backup with ActiveSync (I knooow I should have used whatever 3rd party backup tool... too f**ing late)
-successfully upgraded the system to "Helmi_WM2k5_AKU3.2_32mb_v1.3.2_16mb_bitpool_32mbRamdisk"
-been happy for like 5 minutes
-so I started to get my contacts and calendar restored (still had all my files/pictures - cool)
and then it struck me: ActiveSync 4.x cannot restore these infos to the WM5 system!!
Sooo, after some diggin' on the net I finally got "MobileVault"...
I thought, yipeee, I have succesfully exported my Contacts Database and Appointments Database to my PC...
(I just opened my backup.stg and opened WinCE Databases, selected Contacts Database - which I attached - and exported okay)
Meanwhile (on a remote island in the Pacific... =P) I found out, that both Contacts and Appointments are stored in the "pim.vol" in WM5.
(also attached that)
Well, let's just put'em in there then...
Khmmm... so... put-em-in... Nope. Not workin'.
Also I've been playing around with conveting the exported Contacts DB file into CSV (comma separated format) and importing to Outlook.
Annoying is, that I see the stuff what I need... but it's over 200 entries with 2-6 data each! (don't bother multiplying: it' a LOT)
Only problem was that there doesn't seem to be a recognisable logic in the order of the data... Once the email address is first and name is like 5th, then mobile number is first, etc...
Cannot import to Outlook.
PLEASE! I soooooo don't want to reinstall the PPC2003 again just to export the stuff into outlook and back again.
There MUST be somekind of solution. I feel I'm pretty close to the solution, but I'm just too tired to continue right now.
I'll also try attach as many as possible.
Thanks for any help in advance!

ActiveSync4.5 & Contacts problem

Hello. I've checked the previous pages and didn't see anyone having the same question. That probably means i am the only one so dumb in here)))
Basically, last night i was playing with overclocking my XDA Orbit being insured that all the contacts are syncronized. At some point (273MHz) the device stopped responding so i had to soft reset it. Later i found that nothing got lost BUT my contact list with all the numbers. Next, I open Outlook and see that none of them were saved there. WTF is ActiveSync is doing then? And another problem is that i cannot use backup of my old WM2003 contact list because there is no such option as Backup/Restore in WM6. Any ideas? Please,HELP. I really need those numbers back...

The contacts in the Orbit are gone...
The contacts in the Outlook not sync'ed hence they too gone...
Cannot import 2003 backup into WM6 - different structure
Option 1 - if you have old outlook backup - you can re-import into new outlook file and they re-sync again
Option 2 - Manually enter all the numbers you remember
Option 3 - Nothing
Basically the fact is if you cannot see the contacts in the fone - they are gone! If you cannot see in outlook they are gone - only option is to get from another source!
You mentioned 2003 backup - what did you take the backup with? Maybe you can still read using the same software and try to retrieve the number - or use another 2003 model to import into it
The backup was taken using Backup/Restore feature of WM2003. But I really wonder now, WHY Microsoft decided not to include this option in WM6? If anything happens, you're properly f****d, like me now.
BTW, WM2003 Contact list backup can be accessed with Notepad, but the data looks a bit messy that way.

Am not in the same situation...was letting you know your options....
Good luck with the retrieval...
don't take it personally, i meant "You" in general
I analyzed the chain of events and it seems like i found the root of the problem. It's was nothing to do with overclocking or the device itself. Its ActiveSync. As I usually don't use Outlook, the contact list there was always empty. And this blessed child of Microsoft instead of copying contacts from XDA to Outlook did it other way round thus erasing everything on the phone. Don't know what to do, laugh or cry, but it's so... so... ridicilous!
Thanx for your help anyway, much appreciated

Active$ync Error Code: 86000107 (Solution Needed!)

I need your help on this. I have tried to sync both messchle's 6.1 roms (4.01 touch and 4.0 vanilla) at home and at work. Everytime I sync for the 3rd time (1 home, 2 work and 3 back home again) I get this same error (86000107) on activesync.
Googling for the sollution ive tried all options (new outlook profile, new partnerships, hard reset, etc.) which would work for a while (1st and 2nd time) but would again hick up at the third time i would sync.
Today i found this thread on the Hermes XDA forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=368821
It appears to be the same problem and trouble in solving it. I am wondering if I am the only artemis user with this problem. Perhaps its a WM6.1 issue like was mentioned in their thread. Is Tom's rom any better so this last suggestion can be invalidated?
Will you help on this? Any info?
It would be a great pity if I would have to downgrade to 6.0...
Buggy Wm 6.1?????
BUMP!
75 views and not a single reply! If this problem is related tot WM6.1 i would have expected a little more response, since there are lots of new roms which come out lately.
Well, ive downgraded tot 6.0 anyway and all the syncproblems are solved again. So my best guess is that 6.1 is BUGGY if you want to sync your PPC on 2 pc's!
have been using the wm6.1 now for as long as it's out, bb5.0 from tom and the vanilla and touch versions from meschle now.
have used active sync on my home pc and on the laptop with out any problem.
USB to PC dashed out, cause dashed it always gave me probs active syncen a few time after eachother.
Twiggerdingo, face the same issue today at office. Fix it removing "Task", then "Contact" from the list of stuff to synchronize. Then, put them back and it works now like a charm.
Hope it helps.
Thank you for your fast replies on my post! Happy to see that you have everything working! I use tasks (approx 100) and appointments (700 total upcomming and last 2 weeks?) and depend a lot on it.
I saw the 'tasks' sollution as well and already tried it of course, but it made no difference. Sometimes it works, but then another day it did not. I do not have the time to solve it this way on a daily basis, and with me, the problem came back about 4 times a week (home and at work, on different occasions).
Hope the will be more info on this - and what causes it. Thanks again for your replies.

Re: active sync encountered a problem on the desktop Support Code 86000107
Was this post helpful ?
Although leaving TASK unchecked will temporary fix the problem, but that means you cannot sync TASK.
If you want to fix it properly, please follow these steps:
1: unplug usb cable if you are still connecting it with your WINDOWS MOBILE
2: Open MS Outlook (I m using 2007 as an example), go to File- > New -> Outlook Data File , and create a new PST file (what ever name/ location)
3: In outlook, Tools ->Account settings, then click Data Files tab, click the new PST file that you had just created, and set as default , then restart outlook
4: delete activesync partnership in both Windows Mobile and in your Desktop
5: Plug the WM to the USB port, and it should sync properly again.
6: restore the backup by using MS Outlook's Import and export function
It worked!
i have same problem, my solution:
first backup all data in phone (contacts, messages, calendar, ...)
check which category is problem (Contacts, Calendar, Task, ...) - in setting remove all checkboxes and let synchronize, then add one category and synchronize go on until you get error
uncheck problem category, delete all data in PC in problem category and let synchronize again then add category back - should be ok

Ive tried this as well and yes it worked (for a while). 2 syncs later the same thing reoccured. Strange thing is that pre 6.1 roms give me no problems whatsoever.

I wondered:
Is PIM backup/restore the culprit?
I have a main Pc and a laptop which share info.
Any similarities?

Suggestion
Have you tried this?
Open registry (using something like task manager). Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Version and change from ".1.0.0" to ".4.0.2"
Let me know if that works!

This registry edit don't work for me. I have same error for calender sync between outlook 2003 and outlook 2002. Other Task and note can sync without error.
I faced the same problem a few days ago. Im using HTC Prophet and using one of WM 6.1 builds.
86000107
I have the same problem on my kaiser.
However, mine only occurs after syncing at home AND at work. If I reset my device and resync with my home machine only, the problem goes away.
(having read the 1st post again, it may be exactly the same symptom - I will syncing again at work on Monday, and then back at home.
Why are people pointing to thier PCs as the problem when the common thing with this scenario is the wm device itself, and the fact that when I hard reset, it syncs ok again... maybe there's a problem with activesync on the WM device in this multi-sync situation?

Looks like my problem is that I need to sync with microsoft exchange directly at work. I will try syncing at home again tonight and then at work tomorrow to see if the problem has gone...
Right now I deleted partnership between PC and phone and erased all stuff (contacts, notes, calendar and tasks) in Outlook (there were some deplicities anyway so I had to clean it). I created new partnership. During sync it told me that it can not sync 3 notes in calendar so I erased them and did sync again. It finished properly and its working now.
Lets see if it will stay like that.

Nope, sync'd at home and got the same error - and my calendar won't sync now...
What now. If I delete the partnerships, I can sync to either machine ok, but not both...
I wonder if it's a 6.1 problem?
I am now in the situation where syncing at work is fine - I sync direct with microsoft exchange for contacts/calendar/email/tasks and have a work profile for the notes. Great.
Now I need to be able to sync contacts/calendar/tasks/notes at home... I'll keep trying...
It seems that this 86000107 is some sort of catch-all. No-one seems to know exactly what it's all about. Is there any logging I can switch on and look at to identify the error?
same here...
Hi!
i've got the same problem:
at home I'm running Vista Home Premium SP1, Office 2007 SP1 and MS SyncCenter 6.1
at work it's XP pro SP2, Office 2003 SP3 and ActiveSync 4.5
I can sync my Kaiser (Dutty's WM6) with each single of them without a problem, but not with both - as soon i connect it to the second machine an sync starts, it gives the error 86000107
no clue what to try next...
bye,
Martin
Had the same error, many people don't flash their roms twice. I decided to give it a shot:
1: Hard-Reset your device
2: At PIN connect device then flash Touch 4.01
3: At PIN flash again Touch 4.01
4: At PIN flash radio 03.08.90
This takes some time, but now my device runs flawlessly! Try it out...

Hello there, IF this works, it would be great! are u for sure to have synced it 3times (i mean at home-work-home) after reflashing twice?
Sure the error doesn't reappear?
I now have the same problem.
After reinstalling Office 2003 and active sync the problem is still there.
I hard resetted the ROM and installed a backup that didnt have this problem, and also this didnt resolve it.
I did see that the problem is with the Calander.
It is a strainge problem because it came out of nothing

used active sync and lost contacts

Hi all,
I'm in serious trouble. I just used active sync 4.5 to sync my hermes to a new install of Outlook and have lost all my contacts.
Is there anything I can do to get these back? I'm using binky's verion 3.9 and version .25c of pocket cm..
I have no backup of the contacts, unfortunately... Am I in serious trouble and lost the lot?
Mmmm. This happpened to me a long time ago. One of the causes is that the date of your new outlook (date of your system) was younger than the date of what was on your PDA. The system thinks that you erased all in outlook and makes the modifications on the PDA accordingly. Moreover, most of the time the sync is in the mode "replacing the elements on the PDA". You end with all your contacts lost.
In my case, when i sync a new flash on the PDA, i take care that the date of the PDA is older than the date of my PC (just change the "year" for ex.) So outlook will update my PDA and nothing is lost. Moreover, when I do that, i copy the "outlook" directory (in user/yourname/appdata/local/microsoft. You have to enable the seeing of hidden files) somewhere. So i have at least a backup.
I believe you cannot recover your data unless you had a backup. But i am not an expert
Hope this helps
Are you sure your contacts isn't in the "deleted" folder in Outlook?
This is why everybody always says. Watch what you are doing and take a backup. When it was asking you what to do. You should have choose to combine items on both devices.
The only way now is to check in the deleted folder of outlook if you have not already reinstalled office. Or the only way is to check if you have any contacts left in your sim.
Or better to start over in getting all the contacts from the persons you meet. Hope you didn't lost the number you met in the club last night.
Chill
The funny thing is that I didn't get the usual popup asking the question if I wanted to combine like one does when first time syncing. I figured it kept my previous sync's data with the phone. Thought I had a backup but don't.
I got my backup working eventually...
All back working... Thanks for the comments.
i just had the same thing happen to me last night. i loaded a new system and put office on it and synced it to my phone and all gone. i really really hate activesync. i really wish there was a good alternative.
Pim Backup. 2.8 is the latest version. You will never lose your contacts again.
Pim backup is slightly different to Activesync though. It is more of a static backup (though you may be able to schedule backups).
Its always good though, to use a backup program as well as activesync for these little accidents that happen.
Pim Backup is faster (I have about 700 contacts), easier to use and eliminates all the problems you get when you have a new flash. It is my choice to use and many others. I no longer sync my contacts with ActiveSync. Oh yeah - I store my pim backups on my SD card.
