Since the first day Manila was released people got interesting in making it their own. From there a lot has changed and the way it can be edited has revolutionized.
Many X1 users installed either a ROM with TF3D(/TF3D2) or the separate CAB installation, editing it is very useful to us too.
Now, I'm trying to share "the power" to modify it and make it your own, to then share it with everyone else!
This guide will teach you the basics to make it happen. Basic computer skills are definitely required, some image editing skills make it much easier as well. Good luck!
--- Tools ---
There are several tools you can use for the different steps in the process. I will try to list at least two options for each step. What I use myself is listed green.
First thing you need is an editor that can open and modify the manila skin files;
CFC GUI - Thread - Direct download.
Manila Editor - Thread - Direct download
Then there's actually editing the images;
Adobe Photoshop - Website * Costs 700$ *
GIMP - Website - Direct download
And a proper file explorer;
Total Explorer - Website - Direct Download
Resco File Explorer - Website * Costs 30$ *
--- Files ---
Naturally, you need to find the files to work with. You can do this with CFC GUI (version 0.50 and higher),with a file explorer on your phone or with a PPC controller.
To be able to see the Hidden and System files, you need a proper file explorer (The built-in explorer does not suffice).
With Total Commander, you can move all the manila files to a folder on your storage card. When you've done so, you'll be able to find them when you connect your phone to your PC.
Personally, I use SOTI Pocket Controller - Website. This application costs 36$. Here you can use the application's file explorer, which allows you to see all files on your device.
The files you need are QTC, Mode9 and LUA files. HTC gave every file a coded filename. You're looking for all the files ranging between 00157c97_manila and 7ff2cb82_manila. You only need the files that end with "_manila".
CFC GUI can parse which files are the QTC (image) files you need.

Step 1 - Opening up your editor.
Start CFC GUI and go to file - Select folder (F3). Navigate towards the folder that contains the files you extracted earlier. CFC GUI will start parsing all the files and when it's done show a list of all the QTC files in that folder. Here comes the tricky part. You need to find the file(s) that you wish to edit! Luckily, Chainfire has categorized most of the files for you already.
Step 2 - Extracting the PNG.
When you've found the file you need, select it in the list on the left. Now, to edit it, you'll need to extract it to a PNG file, so you've got a sort of template. On the bottom right of the CFC GUI screen, you'll see several buttons. Click "Save as". A dialog will appear, asking where you wish to save the file. Save the file somewhere convenient, as in the next step, you'll have to navigate towards it.
Step 3 - Opening up the image editor.
In this guide, we'll be using GIMP to edit the PNG files. Fire up the application (first time it'll load a bit longer, searching for files). If you're not used to working with image editing tools, it might seem a bit daunting at first, as there's so many options on the screen. Fear not, you'll get used to most (if not all) of them just by tinkering around with them.
In the top left, click "File" and then "Open". A dialog will appear, which asks you what to open. Navigate towards to folder where you previously extracted the PNG file to. Open it up and let it load. Tada! You have the converted QTC manila file right there, all yours to edit!
Step 4 - Editing the file.
This part is where it gets as complicated as you like it to be. If you wish to make something from scratch, I recommend using GIMP's tutorials to familiarize yourself with the tool. You can find the tutorials here.
Now, assuming you've already created a nice image you wish to use in your skin, first you'll have to open that up. GIMP will open a new window for each file you open, so try and keep track of what goes where! If you want to copy (parts) of your existing image over to the skin file, you can use the "select" tools to select the part you need (yeah, really..). Holding down the "shift" key while selecting lets you select multiple parts (it keeps the current selection whilst adding the thing you select next). Having done that, you can "copy" your selection using either the tab "Edit" and then "Copy", or just "CTRL+C". Now select the skin file's window and use "Edit" and then "Paste", or "CTRL+V". Voila, there it is, on top of the previous skin file.
This is because GIMP (as well as photoshop) uses Layers. This basically means that a single picture can consist of several pictures (layers) on top of eachother. This is convenient, as you'll be able to combine many elements into a single picture, and choose what's on top. You can find the Layers in one of the frames that popped up when you started GIMP (probably on the right of the screen). If you wish to not use one of the layers in the image (for instance the original one), click on the eye icon which you will find before the layer (look for the preview images). Now, you'll only see the image you pasted on top of the original. Use the original image to properly align your new image (especially useful for for instance icons).
Step 5 - Finishing up the PNG.
Now you have edited the file(s) to your needs, it's time to get them back into your manila to see what they look like on your phone! To do this, first you have to save the new image you created properly. Click "File" and then "Save as". A dialog pops up (if it pops up being really small, just drag the corner to see all of it's contents), which asks you where and how to save the file. Normally, GIMP will automatically save the file the way it was when you opened it (when extracted like described above, it'll be fine). If, however, for some reason you made a new file, make sure you press the + icon before "Select File Type", and select "PNG File". When saving, a dialog might pop up, that the PNG plugin can't handle layers. This is logical, as the image file will have to be converted back to a single image. To do this, select "Merge Visible Layers". (photoshop does this automagically). Next, you click "Export" or "Save" to continue. Then, another dialog pops up, asking for some options. Here, you don't want to modify any of the options, just press "save" and it should be fine.
Step 6 - Importing the file back into the QTC
You´re almost done, it´s time to prepare your QTC file for usage. Switch back to CFC GUI and as described above, navigate towards the folder where your QTC files are located. In the list, select the file you modified so you can preview it. On the bottom right of the CFC GUI window, now you´re looking for the "Replace with" button. When you press it, a dialog pops up, asking for a PNG file. At this point, you'll probably have guessed it - navigate to your modified PNG file, select it and click "Open". The QTC file is now modified!
Step 7 - Finishing up
After all your hard work, you'll probably agree it's time to put it into action. You've modified a QTC file, but it's still hiding amongst it's friends, in the folder you left it after copying it from your phone. It won't be hard to find, as you extracted a PNG from the QTC file earlier. This PNG will will have the exact same filename as the modified QTC file, except for the extension (duh..). So, look for that filename in the folder and place it in a seperate folder, again, easy for you to find. From there, copy it to your storage card and finally, from your phone, copy it from your storage card to your windows folder. If it asks if you wish to overwrite, tap "yes". Most changes won't be visible right away. The easiest way is to reset your phone, by holding down the power button, turning it off and then turning it back on. When it powers up and you see your TF3D interface, you'll be overjoyed to see your very own edited image right there!
--- Tips & Tricks ---
- CFC GUI can take care of many of the functions manually described above, for instance extracting the files from your device, and copying the modified files back. This function however, is currently still being tested.
- Warning: Works only if TF3D is in the ROM you installed! If you made a change, but would like the original image back, just delete the file from your windows folder and it'll revert to the original ROM file.

if ur wondering y no one is repllying or saying anything bout this onederful tutorial it is because ur tutorial lacks pictures.
people like to see descriptive images.just do that and evryone will love it

for my part i already got the basic idea of what i should do. i know it's gonna sound crazy but i'v never photo edit anything before lol. im totally lost in all this lol.so because of that it's held me back from customizing. however i have ask a friend to help but he's just busy and i hate to ask him to take time for these little projects of mine. just to give you an idea of what i did already.

No, the dialer's buttons are embedded in a DLL file. If this sparks enough interest, I could create a guide how to edit DLL's as well (for usage in task bars as well).
Though, not many people have shown their appreciation for this guide either, so it's unlikely.

Well, I would certainly be interested at least, for a guide on how to edit the DLL's and extract the PNGs from them etc. If at least for personal use. After that, I might *might* have the time and patience to do something for the xda community ^^
It would be nice, if we could have skinned diallers to make the highlights that knaplullig has done

Help me customize my Dialer
okay im willing to work on some TF3D THEMES but how can i pack them into a cab for the users here ?
i mean,
i make all edited manila files in one cab, so they only need to install it..
how does this work ?

Everyone,
I am not sure if this has been created or not but since many have asked me about my theme, I thought I would compile a quick tutorial on creating a matching, dazzling theme that will include the load screen, Today screen, Dialer and Comm Manager (optional Slide2Unlock). As time goes on, I would like to add to this and make it a complete tutorial.
Please keep in mind that for those who operate on different carriers, phones, and software, you will likely have slightly different variations: Sprint users often have animated startups. Some Comm Managers will vary in style but most most of the file names will likely be the same. Hopefully this How-To will also help you get started off in the right direction in case your particular application is not discussed or found here...
First you will need several programs and I will provide links to all of them below. But before we begin cutting, pasting and installing, always makes ure to save backups of all original files to be modified to a folder on your device or PC that is well labeled so that all of these original files can be re-installed. Soft resetting will alsom enable just about all of the changes you make and should be seen in the next boot-up.
The programs...
1. Activesync - PC-loaded program necessary for transfering the files to and from your PC & PDA.

We will start with the start up screen...
In my PPC \windows directory is a file called Welcomehead.96.png. This is one of the start-up screens that I will modify. Create a 240 x 320 pixel non-animated image, save it as a .png and name it Welcomehead.96.png. (Note, create ALL images, files, etc and remove any read-only, archive properties, etc) Now place this new image in the \My Device directory on your phone. Using a PPC resource tool such as Total Commander, SKTools, etc, copy the your new image from the \My Device\welcomhead.96.png location to the \Windows location. You will recieve a prompt asking if you want to continue overwriting the existing. Click yes. This part is now complete.
Now for the Today Screen...
Create a theme using ThemGenCE. It will take some time using the program before you understand the full capabilities of this program but the rewards later are very satisfying. The utilities in this app are straight forward and loading to & from your device will become a snap. Again, I create a base background using a paint program and load it through ThemGenCe where it can be further manipulated.
Once you have a theme designed and loaded to your device, it's time to get that matching task bars and text to match. With RCMod installed on your PPC device, click on the options you want and highlight your color preference.
Optional...
If you have the Slide2Unlock program installed on your device, create (2) 240 x 320 pictures; one in portrait and one in landscape. Save both as jpgs. Name the portrait: wallpaper.jpg and the landscape: wallpaperL.jpg. Delete the (2) existing images in the \My Device\Program Files\S2U2\gfx folder place your new ones here. Optional clocks can be installed in \My Device\Program Files\S2U2\clocks folder and aptly renamed so that the Slide2Unlock app recognizes them. Soft reset once complete.
Now for the dialer...
Using Tiermann's program on your PC, load a background image and create both a portrait & landscape dialer theme. A little tweaking & experimenting will yield fantastic results as Tiermann's program is option-laden. Once you have created your theme, save it and the program will package your theme into a .cab files which you install just like any .cab. It save the .cab files to the desktop on my PC. Install on your device and soft reset.
And lastly, the Comm Manager...
The Comm Manager will have to be designed manually... that is there are no programs for easily computing a end result which can be easily installed. However, the files (at least on my device) are easily obtainable.
In the \Windows directory, locate and save to your PC using activesync these files:
L_BG - landscape background of your Comm Manager
P_BG - portrait background of your Comm Manager
Status_On - icon indicating the on status
Status_On_Disable - icon indicating status not used
Status_Off - icon indicating off status
Status_Off_Disable - icon indicating status not used
Again, using the trusty and durable paint program of choice, modify these .png images to your liking. Remember to save whatever you create to .png files and rename so that it will overwrite the existing. Overwrite the older with the newer using Total Commander or simply use Activesync and drop the new files over the older ones.
Finished...
You should now have 4-5 screens from startup to operation that express your favorite team, hobby, passion & liking that is seen on just about every screen. The more you tweak, install, remove and repeat, the more masterful you will become in creating a truly unique and thorough theme. This was done on a Alltel PPC-6800 running WM6 but I think this will work on many devices running both WM5 & 6. Please post results & comments here.

[1] Connect your Touch HD to your computer, browse it's Windows folder, and copy all files ending in "_manila" to a directory on your computer. You might also want to copy all ".png" & ".bmp" & ".gif" files too!
The "_manila" files is what HTC use to store all kinds of data... images, fonts, configuration scripts, etc., for TouchFlo. However some things like the "dialer" and the "Communications Page" (which are available outside of TouchFlo) use simple .png images.
You might want to make 2 directories for each file type, so for example, make a directory called "Original Manila" and another one called "Edited Manila"... and copy the "_manila" files into each. Then use the "Edited Manila" drectory as your working directory when making changes. If anything goes wrong and you mess up... you still have the original files in "Original Manila" to go back to!!!!
[2] Download (search the forums for these) "M9 Editor", "Manila Editor", and/or "CFC".
[3] Run "CFC" or "Manila Editor" (right-click & select "Run as administrator"... if you're on Vista) and browse to the directory where you stored the "_manila" files. Click each manila file to see the image it contains. There isn't really a full list of which manila files hold which image (I'm working on that)... so for now you'll just have to do what everyone does, and guess! When you've found the image you want to change, click "Save as" to save the image as a .png.
[4] Open the image you just saved in an image editor... like GIMP, for example, and make it look however you want, making sure it's the same size and position in the image as the original.
[5] Go back to "CFC" or "Manila Editor", and this time click "Replace", and select the new image you just created. The "_manila" file has now been changed, so all you have to do is copy it over to the Windows folder on your Touch HD... stop & restart TouchFlo... and you should see your new image. I say "should"... because if you don't... you've probably selected/changed the wrong image! In which case you might want to copy over the original "_manila" file again to undo your mistake!
[6] To change images that are aren't inside "_manila" files... simply open them in a image editor, change them, and add them back to your phone. A soft reset (turn phone off & back on) might be required for you to see the changes.
[7] To change the structure of elements in TouchFlo, or to change font colours etc., you'll need to run "m9editor" and browse the "_manila files" for "Mode9" files... these contain information on how each page/tab of TouchFlo is structured and looks. Be careful when edited these... as thee can severely screw up yur phone! KEEP BACK-UPS OF THE ORIGINALS!!!!
[8] Changing other elements, like the Top Bar icons, and some icons in Call History, for example, requires editing DLL files, but I won't go into that now. If you've managed to follow the instructions above and got your phone "skinned"... then you'll be more than able to search the forums for how to do more advanced stuff later on.

I have modified Mallmans Storm theme to provide a single day agenda on the first page
4 pages: Desktop, Applications, Weather and Calendar
I have also included buttons for Bluetooth, Wifi, Sound and signal (comms manager) in a 'status' area at the top of the page.
On the desktop, the messages (white is for SMS and red is for voicemail), clicking on the red one will dial Voicemail in the UK, white will open "SMS". The email will open my default folder so you will need to change the shortcut for that.
Applications is a mixture of Storm Icons and default icons, I have lots of apps that I don't have time to create icons for so have allowed both to used on the applications page. Weather page is simple and does for me. Calendar provides 2 days worth of events.
I don't have a contacts page as I have mapped a single press of the 'green' button to iContact 6.45BE. Double press launches the phone dialer.
Normal instructions for installing a WAD2 theme. All of my icons and the wallpaper are contained within the zip file and you just need to unzip the file and then copy the folder to Program Files\Lakeridge\Wisbar Advance\Theme and then open WAD2, select 'Settings' by holding the stylus on the screen and select 'Change Theme'.

Because after that all that needs to be done is copy the "BB Storm Theme" folder extracted from the zip into WAD's theme folder, start WAD, right-click somewhere on the desktop page, choose Settings and then Change Theme, or Search Theme.

Thanks to ur help I managed to install the theme but it does not work properly. Infact i have extra windows icons that wont go away and when i click them it says "incorrect pathway"....I really like this theme and really want it to work!!!!
Well its natural to have Icons that lead nowhere at first, since the paths to your installed programs are not always the same as in GLOC's. Already your memory card might be named differently. So in order to adjust the paths you have to learn WAD a little bit. You will manage eventually, as I did.

Plenty of threads on WAD, you will need to read up a bit but for the basics try this:
press and hold anywhere to get a menu with "Author Mode" as an option. Select this. Then press and hold on a button which doesn't go anywhere for you. Choose "Properties". Click on "Script". Click on "Launch a program" and then "Edit". Click the drop down list arrow next to the program path and choose a program on your machine from the resulting list.
If this is still not clear I think you should search other threads here and on Lakeridge web site forums as this is getting off topic!
Hi, firstly thanks for this great theme, took me a while to figure out what WAD2
I have one slight problem, when on the desktop after I have checked my email or sms and I click close the phone dialer shows up with "Save to Contacts" any idea what is causing this. I am using Duttys 2.6 rom and have the latest trial version of WAD2.
Also how did you make the icons as I would love to create some for HD tweak and othe rapps I use.

With regards to adding new contacts I am not sure but it has only just started happening with mine. I am also using Dutty 2.6 extreme and it comes up, it didn't come up when I used the vanilla rom, so I wonder if it is something to do with the new Rom.
With regards to the icons, I am not sure but I know that if you search the Lakeridge forums there are some posted there. I personally use the application icons as I can't be bothered to create new icons!!

I made some changes to 23088_Mega_WWE_3G by TAI (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=458456&highlight=core+21869)
Apps removed: iContact, FingerKeyboard, Skyfire and Showcase.
Changed couple of manila files:
-Removed clock background from homepage
-Changed manila slider and tab background
Changed splash screen (sample below)
Images are not mine, can't remember exactly where I got them from.

Disclaimer: I flashed it to my device and so far has been working with no remarks for about a month now. However, use at your own risk.
Notes: After you flash, you should update weather from weather tab, once updated, go to: Start>Connections and click on "Weather". This is necessary for the weather info on homescreen to be updated, also if you don't do this before re-starting the device or before turning off, when you restart again manila won't load.
Recommendations:
1.This ROM has very low reception with radio 1.56.70.11, I recommend to use radio 1.47.30.10 (link available below).
2. If you do task 28 wit MTTY before flashing this ROM, please flash OEM Stripped AT&T and then flash 23088_Mega_WWE_3G (link available below).

Hi, the easiest approach is to go into the dump folder first and search the files you want to remove by name, also when you're changing the registry you will need to search for the applications you want to remove and remove the whole key with whatever strings and dwords they might be under it. Finally when you're editing the "initflashfiles.dat" you should remove from there as well any entries referring to applications you want to remove, also the info in "initflashfiles.dat" will give more detailed info on all the files which are components of the apps you wish to remove, this way you can go back to the dump folder and search and remove the unwanted files.

Well, if it is video calling that you're trying to use, to be honest I wasn't using it as my mobile provider is not too reliable with 3G. The only dialer I installed was PhoneEx and I was very happy with it.
As for Internet Explorer I wouldn't know as I prefer Opera. You might find an Opera Mini, personally I was using "OperaMini-4.2-small", whoever you may find the latest version "10".

yep...but since its zipped i dont think re-downloading helps that much when the content is alrdy corrupt
I just tested the file and its ok.

In his case its just bad download and because its in windows cache it will be bad every time till he flushes cache or saves it elsewhere.

Hi Pharmako,
I have a problem editing the registry.
I can easily convert the "default.hv" and "user.hv" files into "boot.rgu" files, but having opened the two "boot.rgu" and edited them with the notepad, even if I save them in "UNICODE" they change dimension end I have errors converting back to "user.hv" and "default.hv".
Even adding the first line "REGEDIT4" doesn't solve the problem.
Tried with WinXP notepae and also withe the "Notepad2"..
What is wrong?

Then finally I tried to first do all registry changes and then saving as > unicode. Meaning that I was first saving and then changing as described step by step in ROMDonald's manual.
So, bottom line: first do all changes to registry and then save as > unicode. And don't forget to add an extra line at the end of the text. Hope this works.

The problem is that in both ways I can't solve the problem.
First of all, is the line "REGEDIT4" on the top needed?
What I've noticed is that even the original boot.rgu, without any modification, can't be converted back into .hv file.
Looking at the text, after the modifications at the registry, when I save in UNICODE all blank lines disappear..
Moreover, when I open the boot.rgu file I already have a blank line at the bottom, I need to add another one?

Hi eryunt, "REGEDIT4" on the top is definitely neeed and even though you see already a blank line, still you need to add another one (know from experience ).
One more thing, once you edit the file, re-open it and look for the following: at the start of the file you will notice that there is certain character space (blanks) between registry values and after many many lines, somehow this spacing thrend dissapears, what you need to do is carefully check till the end of the file and repeat the spacing thrend were needed (I wish I had made a screen shot of this). You should be able to convert then without any further issues.
Please accept my apologies for not mentioning it before, but to be honest it kind of escaped my memmory in my previous post.

You can use TouchFlo Detacher to assign operations (show/hide/close)

what you have to do is,you have to change 17 manila files to transparency and the mode9 file 1c684cd8_manila.I did it already for you,because I changed my homescreen too.Important is,go in you phone windows directory (Windows) and save all the files what you will overwrite with this procedure to you computer to be on the save side,because it could be you change you mind sometimes,and you never know what could get wrong.If not,you will have to make a hard reset with you phone to go back to you original state,copy all the files in your PHONE WINDOWS DIRECTORY (WINDOWS)

Are all the files from your ZIP stored under a specific folder in Windows? I browsed the Windows folder in my phone and found the exact file names that matched the ones you have attached, but they are not in PNG (all the files just have a Windows icon), are those the ones?

I'v got something better for you,use the cfc_gui tool from chainfire,what you have to do is,copy all manila files to you computer,open it up with the cfc_gui tool,it takes a couble a secound to open it, in this tool you will then find all you manila files,if you tick of one file you will see all his content,size,name and picture, you can than save each one on you computer separately and work or change something on it with photoshop or others, if you in the cfc_gui tool go to the (home\vga files) because that a the files for the clock,if you make all the files transparent than the clock will disappear,you can do a lot with this tool,of course you have to be connectet with you phone to the computer to save the alteret files back again to you phone,and don't worry this tool save all you files to the right place in you phone if you use the cfc_gui tool than you don't need the zip file any more you can choose you own method and do what you want, underneath the download link.

I think I cannot use this method because I do not use a Windows computer and cannot connect between computer and phone.
Basically, I just need the things highlighted in neon green in the attached photo to disappear while keeping everything unchanged.
From your first method, I found the files that you put in the ZIP under my phone's Windows folder, but the ones in the phone's Windows folder are not PNGs.
Can you confirm if those are the correct files to replace?
Also, if I just need the few things from the attached photo to disappear, do I have to replace every file with the ones from your ZIP?

To answer your question, I only use bluetooth to transfer files between my computer and phone.
By replacing the files with ones above, will it cause any problem if my ROM isn't english?
Is there a quicker way to backup all 18 original files in case someday I want the clock back, instead of copying one after one from the Windows folder?
Just to confirm, your ZIP above has 18 files (excluding the capture.PNG)
One last question, how do make the menu bar transparent (like from your home screen above) and change all the icons at the bottom of the screen?

no it cause no problems for you ROM,
no quicker way to copy files from you win phone folder,if you would have a connection to you phone via computer it would take a few secound to copy,
zip files have 18files 17 manila and one mode9 file,+PNG
for you last question:to get the transparency for the taskbar I cooked it in my ROM after that I flashed it to my phone,I'v got a cab file that promised to do that same with the taskbar,I never try it because I cooked it already in my ROM,if you want to try it I will make a download link, if it dosen't work you can delete it again from you device,to the icons you can use the HDWall tool to create the icons
