WTF its a simple question bud!
It would Be nice to have maps on your phone through google maps without needing Data, im guessen here that the maps are sent to you through internet, some fricken people on here.
Try MGMaps.
It's a free java app, but looks very good. Should run well under Esmertec JBed. Not sure about the Jbed version in Kavana's ROM, but it works on mine Rose 1.7 ROM (thanks to NRG, Ricky and Stylez).
There are accompanying PC tools for easy downloading of the map cache for defined region and zoom deepness. May work completely offline, supports many sources, not only Google. For Google it's offline only - need to load the cache preliminarily.
If you want to use it with GPS support you will need GPSPortSP.exe tool (free) and set "GPSGate" in the MGMaps GPS settings. The reason - Jbed doesn't provide COM-port support.
They recommend IBM J9 JVM - it supports COM-ports, but this is the only real benefit. Jbed is much better on other points.
Another choice - GpsProga.
It's a WM app like "Google maps mobile". Loads the maps from Google sources, but cache size is unlimited. Additionally on request can suck in a full cache for the specified region.

I've tested Gmail and Opera MINI: not working, everything was working fine with Black 2.0
Can you clarify - Was this working with Black 2.5?

Simply I haven't tested black 2.5. In "BIG" 3d I read other two reports on the same issue, without clear definitrion of the name of the applet.
I have only a "lamp" icon and I tested both JAR an JAD directly downloaded, without results. WM6 beta bug? JJ "optimizzation" Bug?

I, too, have midlets not working since the launch of Black 3.0 and 3.01. The midlets used to work back in 2.5, 2.0 and many various cooked roms available out there. I speculate that something related to the midlet manager had been modified that led to the malfunctioning of midlets.
Apart from this issue the Black 3.0 had been working wonders for me.

Same here, I got the "lamp" icon as well. My midlet is a proprietary one developed by my company and hence wouldn't be the same as yours, segiopi.
Judging from this observation, I'd say perhaps the midlet manager is treating the midlets somewhat differently than before and is giving a runtime error to all of them.
Try "mobile.cmcmarkets.com" and download a midlet from there, compare that to a few other midlet apps, they should give the same "lamp" shaped icon and would "fail to run" as we click on it.
yes me too. gmail midlet was working in black2.5, but failed in 3.0 (havent tried 3.0.1).
gmail, voipbuster, mgmaps & opera mini don't work. ( i guess no midlet will work in black 3.0 until a fix is released)
lamp icon showed in all the midlets & "failed to run" message appear when launching any midlet.
They worked fine in black 2.5.
ok guys
i have been speaking to a number of cookers and it seems that the OEM app "tao intent midlet manager" is not compatible with newer wm6 builds.
hence i have something even better for you (kudos to mUn)
a better midlet manager and support full screen applications too, opera works great on it.
download it from post #2 in my black 3 thread..
this cab will overwrite the links to the midlet manager when u install it.
hi jj, thanks for the fast response. will try it out.
thx a lot, I still using miniOpera instead of full big opera and lot of old games in JAVA.
the new midlet manager works. thanks.
*edit* the behaviour is different from the original midlet manager. although softkeys worked within gmail midlet, but sometimes need to press twice to activate. screen touch no longer working for the softkeys. and performance seems to be slower then intent midlet manager.
JJ,
Thanks for the quick response, I downloaded your new midlet manager, my apps will now install and I will be able to 'launch' them. However, a few secs after I 'launch' the midlets, it would say midlet isn't responding and gives me two options 1) Wait 2) Kill the midlet.
Would you have any other midlet managers available? I've googled around the web and noticed the midlet manager you provided is great when the midlets work; however, its compatibility is a major issue.
GMAIL MIDlet works
new midlet manager is really nice, a bit slow but nicer than intent one. it slowdown my tytn a lot when having it launched, but at least works. thx a lot JJ.
voipbuster runs fine
mgmaps runs fine
opera mini runs fine
gmail doesn't work
"sorry gmail will not work on your phone. your phone doesn't have the appropiate certificate to communicate with the server. try accesing gmail in your mobile browser at http://mail.gmail.com"
Any idea why i can't use gmail?
or how to get the appropiate certificates to be able to run it?
gmail requirements says:
the phone need a class 3 Verisign certificate with serial number 70:BA:E4:1D:109:29:34:B6:38:CA:7B:03:CC:BA:BF. it should come with the phone.
Why i haven't it? and the other black 3.0 users have it?
teorically it can be got at https://www.verisign.com/cgi-bin/support/rootcert/getrootcert.cer but i've tried it but it doesn't yet run.
any idea in how to get a valid class 3 certiificate from verisign that works in my tytn?
TIA
that's strange. gmail midlet works in esmertec midlet manager as you can see in my post earlier in this same thread.
have you tried downloading it again? or delete the old one to test? i had problem in the intent midlet manager, and to get it uninstall i delete it (somewhere hidden within application data directory) directly.
Gmail works fine
Gmail works fine here too ... only gripe is that it doesn't remember the login credentials after a SR ... but that's not a midlet issue I suppose ...

I've installed 1.11 , from mobile.google.com, gmail, get faster Gmail and works
yes, i've deleted it, reinstalled it. SR. and it still doesn't work.
I would like to know your point of view concerning the use of a Java midlet manager on WM6.
Jbed seems to have more features and is more recent, but I have various bugs and exceptions with it...
Which one would you prefer for the next WM6 ROM releases?
Would prefer to have it as separate cabs so that people can choose if they want to use either one or at all.
Hey Schap's,
Jbed would do for me. For browsing this is the best Java available at this moment I think.
Thanks for the good work.
Greetzzz
I'm also wondering about this. What are the extra features of the Jbed release? The Tao release is smaller, and seems to run the apps I need (Google Maps, Opera Mini) well.
I'd vote for separate CABs as well but would prefer Jbed.
Tao
I belive TAO. With that I can save settings by making a copy of Opera on my mem card and after reinstallation, copy it back. That is nice.....
I cannot find the folder containing history and links (settings) for JBED... (Does anyone know where it is?)
I just want one that doesn't ask me permission to connect to the internet...
And seperate cabs would be good...
I'd go with a cab file, but I prefer Tao over Jbed.
Jbed! fastest J2ME VM!
JSR179
Hello,
I'm developing an application in j2me that makes use of the JSR179 (Location API).
My code runs fine on Nokia 6110 NAVIGATOR, which is a s60 3rd edition symbian phone and supports the desired API. i suppose that all the s60 3rd edition devices support the location API as long as they have a built-in GPS.
We have the desire to cover the most devices possible, however the target devices are PDA's with WM such as HTC TyTn II which does have GPS, but the code must run in a JVM like JBed. But JBed does not support JSR179.
I think I'm correct so far.
I would like to receive some advice about possible solutions.
I have tried to find a JVM for a WM device that gives support to JSR179 API, and until now I haven't found one. I found however a WM application called GPSPort that is proxy-like program. I believe it interacts with the GPS Intermediate Driver, and all the data read is redirected to a TCP socket.
It is not a very elegant solution to the problem, but it is a solution.
I haven't contacted the developer because I haven't ruled out other options that may exist.
Please reply...
Thanks
Tiago Clemente
whichever gives you the least problems
as for me no matter. if it can run opera mini whithout dumb quastions - it is good for me. do not see any reason to putting it external in cabs - as for me it is'nt bigg deal to find it elswere. personaly I prefere coocking version
I personally prefer jbed as it seems to have less incompatibilities for development. but maybe make it uninstallable that way peoplecan uninstall and reinstall whichever one they like
to ged rid of the connection question in jbed, you must download the signed version of opera. After the first attempt, you can click on always connect, don't ask me
I looked through 65 pages of that free app website for my new dash. lol my eyes were burning.

One of my favorite apps is SmartTouch Mobile. It's a must-have for those with unlimited texting but no data plan. http://www.smarttouchmobileinc.com
It gives you access to 4Info, Amazon, Google SMS, facebook, twitter, and several other sites, but doesn't require a data plan. It uses SMS to send & retrieve the info, and displays it in a nice format. I find this VERY useful when I'm out and about. It's free, btw.
I had tried using it on WM6 when I first got my Dash. It was only semi-functional because the program wouldn't intercept the SMS like it was supposed to. On WM6.1, it works flawlessly.

some are a must have like sktools for setup and dashwire for back up, but for me my favorites have to be beejive, pocket nester, omapclock, lowlight and im growing quite fond of celetask now.
I use Wifi for Data (at my work, home and restaurants). I do not have unlimited plan. And I never felt a need to have date elsewhere.
Favorite apps.
1. Opera Mini (80% of usage, rest of the apps 20%)
2. Celetask to kill tasks.
3. WiFiFoFum2
4. Yahoo! Go (For Yahoo email, Java GMail) this is while accessing email via proxy. Else messaging (IMAP) to access yahoo and gmail.
5. TVGuide
6. VTap
7. Weather watcher
8. MDict (Wiki)
9. Boopsie (IMDB channel) (While renting old movies)
Hi,
For those who regularly update some new stuff, please post your recent discoveries.
Mine (updated 30/7/09) :
---------------------------------
ROM: Dheewatara WM6.5 OS 5.2.23016 build 23016.5.3.0 M2D [30/7/09]
RADIO: 3.18.19 [stable & battery saver +-5days, forgot there is even a battery in it ]
GPS : IGO MYWAY 2008
BROWSER : still the included IE
In past I tested some other browsers (I recall Minimo).
Which is your favorite recent browser which can restore last session, multi session,... ?
It would be great if you could select "always browse in widescreen" so that you don't have to turn the screen manually...
Thanks,
Innovator
My two cents...
I've just gone back to my artemis after a year with an elf courtesy of my old job...
ROM: Tried all the ones around, ended up sticking with YuE 14 (I think) - WM6.5 has no significant benefits and isn't stable enough for me.
Browser: Again tried everything, but always end up using Opera Mini - I install Emertec Jbed, then a signed version of Opera Mini 4.2 - that ;ets you always allow internet access without asking every time. I have a mortscript cab that makes it the default browser for email links, and have a shortcut that runs it directly so I can assign it to the browser button. Opera Mini is by fas the fastest, especially if you're browsing over GPRS rather than Wifi - if fact, you can't tell the difference!
GPS: Had a spell when IGO8 was my fave, but at the end of the day, you need a satnav to be simple to use on the road, quick and clear. All the fancy buildings and 3-d stuff really doesn't improve the functionality and ease of use, so I'm back with TomTom 7, and that's really the best for me - fast, clear and simple.
Radio: Hadn't paid much attention - using 3.18.90
Browsing in widescreen? Easy - just use mortscript to create a script that rotates then runs the browser. I had one for skyfire, which is a brilliant browser for streaming video from BBC live feeds...
YuE 14 extraclean is the best ROM.
3.21.90 is the best Radio.
Garmin is the best stable navigator, but no detaile Syrian map yet.
Original IE still works flawlessly for me.
allexandrum
I agreed with you. Do you know where I can find to download IGO Myway 2008??
can't tell you because it is forbidden to promote torrents and warez
Hi,
i've tried to get the Offline Google Maps working on my desire but it just won't work. Like explained here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=351001
Did some1 already try this or got an other method of getting offline google maps to the desire?
There are many Offline Open Street Map alternatives, but none are even half as good as Google Maps.
Anyone? :S
those instructions are not for an android handset. You will want to look in the android market for a offline map solution, several exist.
Those alternative Offline Maps are all pretty bad.
No Multitouch, much less sights than in gmaps, no subway-plan, no custom overlays, no sattelite overlay, no custom poi's or something else is missing.
Thats why i was searching for a real alternative, or a workarond to get Gmaps running offline on the Desire..
Ok got it to work, too bad the vulcano is ruining my holydays ;S
Here is what you'll need:
rMaps (Android APp)
latest JRE (from Java, duh)
Mobile Atlas Creator (i've used 1.7)
SQLite_jni (extension for JRE)
Just install all of the above, create a new map, copy it to the right directory on ur SD-card.
Choose custom maps in preferences in rMaps.
On Map-screen choose Layers and there tick the custom Map.
