Games on the HD - Why a poor selection. - Touch HD Themes and Apps

I recently got the HD. Must say, it is a sexy beast. One factor that led me to choose this over the iPhone was -
* A greater selection of apps and the ability to install whatever you wished.
I am a keen game player and currently, with the HTC HD I have the following problems.
1. Lack of D-Pad/hardware buttons means that there many existing titles are unsuitable for play
2. The screen ratio means that more titles dont play (in full resolution).
3. There just arent any good motion controlled games (whereas, there IS on the iPhone)
4. Game titles that do work properly on the HD (and even those that dont) are boring/not very fluid/not exciting/2D - certainly not the case for the iPhone.
5. Game development for the iPhone seems an active process - every week, one hears of a new innovative game release for the iPhone, which one never hears for the HD or other PPC.
6. I tried using emulators - including the PSX one, just too slow, doesnt do much for me.
What do people have to say about the list above? Specifically:
1. Is there any way of playing iPhone games on the HTC HD
2. Why is no one making use of the HTC HDs gaming potential/motion sensor?
From a rather cheated purchacher.

OMG i cant hear it anymore. every second post is whining about the so cool iphone and the crappy touch hd.
windows mobile has the problem that it has good applications, but boring games. many developers seem still to think that its only a phone for business usage.
the touch hd is not a dedicated gaming device, if you want one, you have to buy a psp or iphone. thats it.

just listen carefully , its not the problem of the device(its windows mobile so it has the ability to accept great games and its also proved by the Xtrakt game!) , its the problem of the developers there are no / or a little developers that can make games like Xtrakt. (oh btw Xtrakt wasnt even developed by a hd user or for the hd it was developed for the Xperia )
sorry, if im wrong just delete this reply or ignore it !
sorry for my bad English

The problem is that every company that makes phones can use any chipset they want and there is no SDK for developers to use that is standardized for all Windows phones. hopefully with the next line of HTC phones there will be enough in that line to encourage developers to figure it out. Anyway, try Need For Speed as well and you can enable the gsen to work for it until the new version (that EA is including the gsen in) is released: http://www.fuzemobility.com/need-for-speed-gsen-enabled-now/

if u ask me... 800x480 is new one to developers(popular device) so they need time to adapt their new games so u will play to your device...till now u got 640x480 games working on your blackstone(adapted somehow ) and wait for new 1 to come...
cheer
ps. u cant compare iphone with blackstone cos, trust me, iphone its not worth it

my missus has an iphone and they are two completly different phones its like comparing a toaster with a microwave.
iphone has great games and gui interface and is damn easy to use but it lacks applications and modifications
get your missus to get an iphone that way u can play the games on hers while still modifying your hd!

I don't know why you feel "cheated" because really, you should have known that coming in.
Also, WVGA screens are not all that popular at the moment - you've bought a leading edge device and support is still coming - wait for the TD2 and TP2, and then you should see a lot more apps coming.
Also, iPhone has the App Store - developers have incentive to make games for /one/ platform (2 if you count iPod Touch)...WM developers have to cater for so many devices that it's almost ridiculous - not to mention that people will just pirate the software anyway.
Wait until the Microsoft MarketPlace goes online for a bit, and you should see a lot more games and apps coming your way.
But honestly? If you got want a phone to play games, then get an iPhone. If you want a phone to play music, get a Nokia 5800 or an iPhone..if you want a phone that you can watching HQ vids on, flash the brains out of, with tons of add-ons, without fear of fiddling around and tweaking that phone until it's uniquely yours, then get a Touch HD. WinMo is not the most user-friendly OS out there...but that's why we have XDA and all those awesome cooks/devs out there!

I could be very wrong but microsoft market place has been online for years. i certainly recall submitting my own applications around 4 years ago.

Just to summarize, I now understand that there is lack of good games for the HD for the following reasons:
1. Software/hardware of every single windows mobile is different therefor, developers do not know what to target. iPhone is what it is.
2. People who buy WM are not interested in flashy games
3. The hardware of HD is superior to iPhone for playing games. But despite this, people are not interested in development because of these reasons.
4. Its easy to download cracked games and stuff for WM devices so developers are losing out.
5. there are ok games out there but most of them have one or more limitations (e.g. sensor support, wrong screen resolution)
6. If you want the fully customizable phone and the joys of playing games on an iPhone, you first need a woman.
7. Microsoft will never do anything to get these problems sorted.
8. Looks like we WM users will never have proper games for our devices.
Depressing thought really.

you're right, it is depressing...but with the new WVGA devices coming out soon, with Windows Mobile 6.5 on the way, we should see new interest in WM devices and hopefully games for them.
and you may be right about the marketplace, but I am sure that Microsoft are planning on releasing the Microsoft Marketplace (or re-releasing it) with WM6.5 launch, it will function in much the same way as the Android version and the Palm version - to compete with the charm of the AppStore

+1 the naked truth!

Windows Mobile
HD is a very good mobile hardware, the problem is the software used , Windows Mobile , which is very limited for the applications versus the competitor system Mac iPhone. I have and I am using both of them for my private business. With the firmware version 3, iPhone is going to be a superior and first in class of technology for the mobile market. No doubt!
Actually you can find a lot of applications and games working very well on iPhone (see appulo.us), meanwhile on HD the selection is very, very limited. In the next future, also the viruses will start to growth around in windows mobile system, and again it will be a problem similar to XP system forced to use antivirus software, etc.
This is the truth, all the rest it’s just a sterile discussion...nothing else.

The way I see it, Blackstone is one of the first major HTC sellers, that makes use of a 480x800 screen res....The newest and coming up models, are to have the exact same screen res.and in addition, the same processor and RAM capacity, like Diamond 2, Pro 2 etc.
So, hopefully, more users will own the same "platform" (mobile phone's specifications)- meaning there will be more room for potentional customers of the developers' programs.
Keep in mind, that the more popular a platform is, the more the developers want to work with it...And iPhone, at least as a standalone device, is by far more popular than any Htc device...
However, consider 4-5 or more Htc models, with the same specs as the HD...Now that should make a difference....shouldn't it?

Lets break this down nice a simple:
IPhone - One of apples "up there own arse" products who stand there saying "Hay we have loads of support from others an were know for our best selling IPod so.....lets jump on the phone market" make it look all shiny an add loads of apps an Itunes Support!
HTC Touch HD - I know let do a phone that use windows, can have the OS upgraded with future possibilites for apps, fully PC compable for access (As not everyone can aford A £800 Mac), A large nice screen, word that is back compatable with older docs and more.
Personaly Apple piss me off as I'm a music producer an there so up them selfs with "Logic Pro - Mac Only".....Oh wait Cubase is multi-format.
You see my point here?! Apple have for me have just bandwagon jumped "cashing in" so to speak on the phone market an keeping all the arps exclusive for the I-Phone much like Logic only for there Macs - yeah good phone but for how long?
Rant Over!

While that is true, the keywords there are "most" and "in some form".
I dont like apple products, and doubt I would ever buy one. But with the iphone they have redefined what people want and are coming to expect from high end handsets.

That is very true... but I think it is only a matter of time until interesting concepts are "ported" to WM... Just look at TouchFlo: This effort of making WM finger-friendly is a direct result of the iphone - and my HD is becoming more finger-friendly with every new ROM released here!

Lets be fair. Despite my love for my HTC HD, I have come to accept that those with iPhones enjoy something greater than what we can ever hope to... entertainment to the max when it comes to games... developers are gagging for it.
also, let us not say that iPhone is for bums and WM devices are for the social elite... the reality is that most users are looking for a, when X equals the benefits of a PDA phone, 'mobile phone with X' (X being the extra), not 'X with a mobile phone' (mobile phone being the extra). I just wish in the case of the latter, X could also include games.
With my HD, I have already enjoyed the GPS with TomTom, WiFi and all the hours of fun it brings, software programming and trying out some random apps (many of which dont work, however had elated prior to actually running them). I dont think an iPhone, despite it obvious offer of sensually pleasing games, could have left me satisfied so, especially when I dont have a missus.
I have to be honest, things are looking up, the need for speed game appears to be an exciting development.

Microsoft Windows Mobile Games far behind IPhone ?

So far Ive got Need For Speed.
I want Spore but can't find it anywhere. Just an american site "Handango" but it dosn't wanna work when I try to pay via paypal
The basic market for this for iPhone users is way higher. The iPhone has a lot more kids (I'm not bashing, just don't know how to say it otherwise) and people who are generally more interested in games. The low costs for developers and low prices of the appstore attract people aswell cause it's so easy to download and play a game. It's a scene which is ideal to most gaming-companies. Graphic capabilities do not differ so much though, but there just isn't a market for it at our windows mobile camp.
deem --- If only we could have iphone os on our Touch HD!!!! -- then we could play most of the games which iphone users can!!!!
BTW-- HTC make devices for work, but the devices are even more than cappable for play and multimedia!!! Im 15years old and I have Touch HD just cuz it is a very powerfull device with great multimedia capabilities!!!!

Not gonna happen though.
HTC is starting to focus on the multimedia side and user friendlyness as you can see, starting in a proper fashion since the diamond. In my opinion the HD has far greater multimedia capabilities then the iPhone (which it has, from codecs to viewing/sound pleasure) but it just isn't a plug and play device and you will often need 3rd party apps, which a lot of users don't understand/have any willingness to do so. But with the help of sites like XDA and software developers you can have an extremely suitable multimedia device.

agree with that-- from xda I have found-- correct video codecs and converters, nice picts, great games (like xtrakt ), mods, finger friendly stuff!!!!!!
So bassicaly --> No xda = Iphone sells go up 200% ----- with xda = Iphone sells keep droping and people keep loving Windows Mobile!!!!!
iPhone users care more about pointless things like games, or at least the majority of them do.
I wouldn't mind having some really top notch games and some of those fun but ultimately useless apps for WM, but I can definitely live without them.

Touch HD games - No rival to iPhone

Hi guys
When I bought a HTC Touch HD a while ago, I got it as it was seemingly the best rival to the iPhone. I do like the HD. But one thing I wanted was decent apps like the iPhone had, esp games. Looks like the only game that the HD can boast about is Xtract, on every thread on here, thats the only game ppl talk about. Where are the games that I can play that shows it can compete with the iPhone games. Everyone sitting on the train playing great wee games on their iPhone, but I have Xtract to play, or stupid wee puzzle games with no graphics, pretty dissapointing. Can anyone prove me wrong with this and point me to great fun apps and games for the HD? I dont see the point in slagging the iPhone, if its clearly better when it comes to the fun aspect to the phone, which is why most people want these days.
Cheers guys
Martin
I tottaly agree with you...
you think exactly in the same way as me...
im so sad with my Touch HD too
nice point....
tbh, the touch hd is not really a games platform, its more of a getting things done type of device (something i think it does very well). Sure, it would be nice to have some extra games, but i bought this device to help keep myself organised as well as do some cool geeky stuff and my hd still does that fine. Maybe you simply bought the wrong device?
lol, i think that i bought the wrong device for games and apps...
but to browse the web and read some study things it's nice
i wanna change it, but i didn't see any really good device to replace it
so i will wait for that...
I don't know. I think it's pretty nice being able to play Starcraft, Warcraft, Heroes of might and magic and various other old pc games on the blackstone. Don't think that's possible on the iphone.
Other than those, you still have games like monopoly, asphalt, guitar hero, need for speed undercover, call of duty, assasins creed, fifa, prince of persia etc. etc. Lots of games, really.
regards
LOL, all these games are "Kid games"...
i think that the we need games like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-i5xYMY6bw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zOOaPQ4hiE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5PX10ASE3E
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbUVpApFS7k
i think that these example talks better than anything...
I'm asking the same question: why can't we have cool 3D games like iPhone? I think Xtract and Experiment 13 are the only 2 games which showed us that it IS possible on our devices. So why are there only stupid 2D games with ugly qvga-like graphics (gameloft)?
I've played only two really good games (unfortunately both 2D) on my device: Archibald's adventure (made in Czech republic ) and OpenTTD. Most of other games are useless and not pretty funny/exciting...
I dont wanna 3D games with stunning graphics or something like that...
i just need something like this...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yZSsqj5hLA
games
Well there are several reasons for the lack of games on the HD2
1) Gameloft give iphone a better version because they make more money.
On windows mobile most users look for cracked software.
2) THE BIGGEST ONE: Developer tools: Iphone has 2 and 3D compilers that are optimal for making games. Microsoft tools will piss you off , and takes longer to make games.
3) Proper feedback: Alot of up and comming developer like myself have seen where you release a freeware game and hear tons of compliants!! Like ohh this game doesnt have multi-touch its crap. Mean while they dont understand that not all developers have access to the best tools.
The solution is simple , consumers must tell Microsoft give developers easier and better tools to work with. That way we can deliver bettter games to you. Us developers need your help to make better games.
Here is a screenshot of Resident evil on touchpro2 , looks nice. I dont know when it will be released though.
i would like also to play very nice interactive games, but with all the functionalitys of wm6.5
i never wanted to buy a not adaptive system like iphone, just only to play games..
yeah the tools for wm6 is also a crap... the problem is that many wm6 phones have different specifications, this problem apple dont has...
but everything that gone wrong on wm6 and older,.. its going to be a way better on wp7. finally...
working on
Yes most developers are getting fustrated and consumers as well. Alot of the problems with resistive screens , so there is no multi-touch. Iam working on this resident evil 5 port, but its so tough. I cant make it 3D but just trying to make it fun for people to play. This screen shot is what I done so far.
yeah dude, that's nice...i support you in this project, do it!!, it's fine!
i think that i should change my device, ther's nothing ahead in Wm 6.5
bubble breaker, solitaire and pac man, that's all....
i think that Android and iPhone can give us a "little" more...
tims demo
Here a demo of a really fun game Tims key Quest. The controls are easier than most action platformers and the graphics are simple and smooth. Try it and tell me what you think. Android is not really that good trust me, but the iphone is a monster . Iphone is good and has solid games . I think people buy thier games because its 99 cents. Thats why I price my windows mobile games for only 99 cents , because after buying the phone, your broke.
If you want me to add more games here just let me know!!
I think you're being a little unfair on the WM platform.
I use - and have developed for - winmo, android and iPhoneOS , and can tell you that the MS coding solution is FAR superior AND easier to develop for than either of the competitiors. xcode is one of the worst programming environments i have ever seen, and every iPhone developer i've spoken to has said they wish they could use visual studio instead.
As has already been mentioned, WinMo devices are more 'tools' than 'toys'. You don't get a winmo phone for playing games, you get one becuase it's reliable, versatile, and well priced. The iPhone - while being great to wave in front of your friends in the pub - is crap in EVERY other respect. They break VERY often, the code is nightmarish, and you can only do what apple WANT you to do with it. Contrary to what you may think - the hardware isn't much higher spec than the standard winmo devices at the moment (worse in many respects) . WinMo has many classic games available including the Quake and Doom series, Guitar Hero, Lemmings, all the PopCap games, and many many more....it's not meant to be a gaming device though. As i said, it's a grown-ups phone...a tool...for getting work done. It just happens to look good and perform as-well or better than the iphone while it's doing it
Having said that, i'm glad to see you're making progress..keep it up and good luck )
Can't we all just play Pocket Uno and get along?
There are so many excellent games for the HD I don't even know where to start. Countless 2D platform games and shooters, countless puzzle games, stuff like SCUMM for playing classic quests, various emulators, RPGs (Creatonia, Zenonia), strategy games, any board game you can imagine.
You also have 3D shooters, but those are generally not so fun to play for the lack of multi-touch. Multi touch would help make it playable, but seriously, you need a gaming system to enjoy a 3D shooter, there's just too many controls needed for it to be enjoyable on any phone.
i think you're buying the wrong device dude
iphone is more multimedia + game phone
so if you want buy a device for listening music, play game, maybe little suft internet
iphone is your right device for u
Windows mobile is PDA...
with winmo you can change user interface.. cook rom... remote pc ...etc
and the app in winmo is more for help you at work.. not for fun maybe or serius work
not for much fun like iphone...
well I have different opinion becoz i fall in both categories
Game and Business
first thing let me clear one thing is HD is not a gaming device its more business phone. But its not like you won't have games on HD I have NFS and other game which works awesome on HD.
iphone is not a business phone and they made this phone only for teenagers who want music and fun. its not multitasking and not like HD so forget comparing your HD with iphone. i don't like iphone becoz they are so arrogant.
XDA not allows to post crack tools or games otherwise you never complain about games on HD
you can google it and you can find N number of games which work on HTC Touch HD
One best thing which i love for my HD is its work gr8 with Garmin Maps becoz of this i can drive in any country . Now this you won't get in iphone and its not tat easy

Question about Android games & apps

Am I the only one that thinks the games & apps for the HTC desire sucks - compared to iPhone stuff? Or am I missing out on something?
buy an iphone then. android is not for average joe
you're posting in the wrong forum.
but in answer to your question, yes, you probably are.
Games could be better but Galaxy S has a better gpu then Desire so once more phones are released like that we will see better games,
Apps are good on Android, we have 54% of all apps which are free compared to Apple who have not as many free ones. Plus more dont mean better.
Could anyone name 3 good games for android
Fifa 10, Asphalt 5, Doodle Jump
Homerun battle 3d, gangstar, raging thunder 2.
soon Angry Birds!!

No your not. I'm not gonna deny m8.
I prefer my desire overall.
But Android Market compared to Appstore is Complete Rubbish.
But before anybody starts calling me an apple fanboy.
I think this time next year android market will be far ahead of appstore.
If you compare android market now to what it was a year ago, theres a huge difference in quality of apps and games.
Apple has been on the market longer hence it is more developed. so as mentioned above, give it another year
Tower Raiders is quite worthwhile too.

Yes it sucks, and doesn't have the friendliest community either looking at some of the comments above.
To put into perspective - I love Android. I support it, I use it, I have used it for over 8 months and don't see myself switching to anything else.
However, in terms of apps - well look at the quality of the iPhone apps, they look so slick and intuitive it's unbelievable. In comparison the apps made for Android using the default Views look awful. I know there's a few good looking apps, but a "few" isn't most unfortunately.
Games as well, Android does have a fair few good titles such as Asphalt, RoboDefense and so on - but that's only the tip of the iceberg. There is a very long way to go if Android wants to compete in the general consumer market directly against iPhone (whose customers buy the phone mainly for the apps anyway). I read in an article yesterday saying that most of iOS's top apps are actually games. Most of Android's are utility apps and not a single game in it's top 10.
No use saying that Android is just for intelligent people anymore. It was at the time of the G1, and was even upto the start of this year. But now the gameplan has changed, they do want to make it an OS for everyone, not just geeks. Look at the marketing for the Desire, the DroidX, the X10 and so on.
However, the future isn't that dark - there should be LOADS more games coming with as new avenues for developers to actually make decent games open up:
- Flash
- AIR
- Unity Engine
- OpenFeint
- Google own aquisitions of small game-making companies such as LabPixies
- probably other stuff I've not come across
All this stuff, along with stats showing a lot of devs switching over to Android means that that we could see a massive increase in quality games in the upcoming months.
Android market suffers becuase of lack of a2sd support for most of the phones/users...
Developers are probably trying to use as little of phone's internal memory as possible, and that's why the same apps look cheaper on android comparing to iphone.
Google really f*cked up with apps installation

i think the android market has come on in leaps and bounds, it reminds me of my palm days when you could pretty much find an app to do anything you wanted for free. the only downside of that is that to a certain extent, the volume of free apps acts as a disincentive to professional developers as it may give them the impression that it will be harder to monetise their products, of course some devs may be attracted to the vibrant community that is android rather than the staid walled garden that iphone apps seems to be.
in conclusion, froyo for everyone, either that or root for all and apps2sd. maybe its time that devs developed larger programs specifically for the root market. hmmmmm

Could anyone name 3 good games for android

Robo Defense, AndTangle, Andoku, Air Control, Cestos, Othello, Gameboid (generally with Pokemon for me but others available), Word Search.
Those are all the ones I play regularly

Why is android so "meh" for games ;0(

ok its starting to annoy me now... but android has been around long enough and gotten a fairly large established user base that i cant see any excuse why our games are so CRAP compared to the iphone...
I refuse completly to buy an iphone.. in fact i point blank refuse to own any single apple product... i detest the level of control the force upon every one of there products... but as much as i try to argue the fact that my desire and android OS is superior to the iphone it falls flat on its face every time i see the games available for the iphone.... so what gives?
Is it that the hardware is so poor compared to the iphone it just cant cope with the games that work so well on the iphone? is it just that no one is making games
for android seriously yet?
I scan the market and see highly rated games like throttle coptor.. or abduction... i mean really? my 4-5 year old N95 had better gameplay !!!
I love my android in every other way ( not THAT way... god some peoples minds are in the sewer.. :0) ) but i just wish there were some decent games out there that could compete with the iphone ... i just dont know why!
Why bother arguing, who cares, you like your phone they like theirs. I bought a droid phone because it does what I want I could care less if it has ****ty games If I wanted to play good games on the move i'd by a DS or PSP.
If you take a look at Gameloft's games, you'll find they are pretty much close to their iPhone equivalents. Most of them are not available on the Market, but I like Dungeon Hunter and Nova.
The games market for Android is still fledgling, but expect it to improve dramatically over the next year.

Dave
i was looking at a review on some of the gameloft titles ported from iphone.. and in pretty much every review it said the game was far inferior to the iphone... not so much graphicaly (although they did say they ran alot chopier on the desire) but the controls are meant to be awful... as for some reason the desire and other android devices cant cope half as well with multi touch controls?
the reason why is the apps sd issue.
iphones can use all of the 16/32 gb for app storage, android can only use the onboard RAM, which isnt bigger than 512mb usually. this limits the size of apps.
Up until now, developers have been hampered by the fact that every Android phone to date has had a relatively small amount of storage available for applications (a couple hundred megabytes as opposed to the iPhone’s many gigabytes). Apps are stored in the phone’s ROM rather than the phone’s removable (and cheaper) SD storage, which grants developers enhanced protection against having their apps pirated. But it’s also proven to be a handicap.
Many of the iPhone’s most popular applications are graphics intensive, rich games. But these games often require high quality visual assets to go with them. The iPhone handles these fine — you can download massive apps over Wi-Fi or through iTunes sync. On the other hand, while the newest Android phones are certainly capable of rendering high quality graphics, their ability to handle large apps is limited by the phone’s available storage. Yes, developers can choose to download their app’s assets to the SD card after the initial install, but this isn’t a good experience for the end user.
from now on, ie with Froyo and probably 3.0 gingerbread games can be stored on the sd card( apart from smoe kb files) this will encourage more game development.

Not convinced this is totally accurate! Most of the better games just have a separate download which goes direct to SD card anyway.

I find alot of people on xda (as good of a site this is) stuck in the past!
I mean "if i want to play good games i'll buy a ds?"
So you deem £400 plus for a device a good price for something you consider to be just a phone? I'm sorry but thats nuts!
Believe it or not the most fun to be had with a phone these days is not changing what the battery icon looks like.
And to the op games on android are picking up, this is somthing i've noticed in the short time i've been with android,
Nfs shift for example, DS? I think not!
It's even said to be better than the psp version.
Then we have Raging thunder 2, Monopoly classic HD, Lets golf, Hyper jump, Hungry shark, Anytime pool,
Hero of sparta, Backbreaker football, Sims 3 HD, Crush the castle, Nova,
Tiki towers and also out this month Reckless racing and Angry birds, all good games
And to round off my rant HTC packaged and sold the desire as many other manufactures do as a "Multimedia device"
And gaming takes more money as an industry today than music and Movies put together!
Put's on flame coat and hides! LOL a DS?

thats because the desire dosent have multi touch, it only has dual touch, that ok when you need to say move a virtual joystick and press a button, but if you need to use 2 virtual joysticks or 2 x/y axis's the desire gets confused n f'ks up lol
better drivers .. better hardware.. for a PHONE this is very good... asphalt , super ko, talking tom etc... all very good graphics... but it is . at the end of the day ... a PHONE... until the they are fully converged... will have to stick to huge games on your sd card .

4 Android 3D Games Worth Buying
A Look at Android Gaming: Video Overview of the Top Games Google’s OS Has to Offer
Android may have some catching up to do, but it's catching up fast
The Nexus One and the Desire use a Synaptics ClearPad 2000 touch sensor. Later HTC phones (e.g. EVO and Incredible) are using better touch sensor (see here for more details), and I expect this to be continued in the Ace/Desire HD and newer models.
So, it's not "Android's" fault - it's the hardware. That being said, there is no reason why the game developers couldn't tweak the controls to better suit the Nexus Ones/Desires touch sensor - they just tend not to bother because many of the games are direct iPhone ports.

Why did you buy WP7?

Just trying to bring some positivity to the forums.
I bought WP7 because it's got the best music player on the market, a smooth UI, xbox live integration, great games with the promise of even better which is completely believable after seeing such titles as ilomilo, xbox live integration, it's range of hardware selection which though it can't touch android beats out iphones selection, expandable memory, and because overall it's just got the most beautiful UI. It never feels like they took the best from another OS and just improved it.
I had a Zune HD and loved it so much that when i saw WP7 had taken the metro ui, Zune media and xbox live and put it on a phone that was it for me.
Zune is so far ahead of itunes it makes them look out of date (bar the remote control features this needs to be implemented asap)
Quality for me is so much more important than quantity. Other phones have a lot of cool stuff but none look and feel like WP7 or the quality of its media.
Then the cherry comes xbox live this is it for me, I am a huge gamer and xbox live is where it is at, period. All in all this is the greatest user phone ever it may lack high end features but it more than makes up for it by doing what it does better smoother and sexier then any other device you can buy today.
Loved the look of the UI, and Xbox live intergration. I bought a HD7 for the big screen, I was bored of my iPhone too
REason
I have tried all other OS and I am somewhat I would say loyal to Windows mobile. Honestly I sortof got tired of having to update my device bi-weekly or resetting device to do certain things, and for all the features it had build in I had purchased from someone for wm6.5. Like checking my friends online status on xbox live, I loved the zune interface I had a regular not an HD but my kid brother had one and loved it. I am optimistic they will enable more functions built and I am patiently waiting on the other things from 6.5 to be ported and more. And I was somewhat jealous of every other phones bigger screen (than my tp2)
Got pissed with Android, waiting for updates and the UI. I hated WP7 first, because I was in love with Android guy, but after some time I saw what **** it is and just started to get to know with WP7. And then I realised that this OS will be perfect for my needs and after some time, I sold my Desire Z, it had defect with keyboard (before I had desire, which had defects too) and bought Omnia7. It's perfect, I'm perfectionist and this phone is just awesome, no single flaw so far...
Also came from iOS (iPhone 3G, 3GS) Android (nexus one). Reasons why i switched to WP7:
1. Xbox live and also their promise of great games, as i also am a gamer
2. Metro UI, slick and smooth. It just works
3. Xbox live
4. Zune
5. Xbox live
It does what I need it to do and does it efficiently.
1) I liked how the UI looked
2) I want something fast
3) I wanted something that was standardized (with minimum system specs) so I could expect apps to work with it for a while
4) I wanted something different
5) I didn't want to have to spend time tweaking my phone in order to get it to work well.
6) XBOX Live
7) Fast camera
1. Its smooth and fast
2. Its different
3. Its v1.0 of an OS, something I hadn't had before
4. Got tired of tweaking the hell out of winmo
5. Tried android on the hd2 and it reminded me of IOS, just laggier, with no promise of device updates.
6. All the multimedia options: netflix, slingbox, bitbop, zune for music, zune for video, zune handles all my podcasts
7. It doesn't freeze up for me, ever! (OK once since US launch, but even then it soft reset itself)
8. Developers: the apps were are getting seem to be at least as good as IOS and look better and smoother than the same apps on android (if they even have them)
9. Games: once again, on par with IOS games, most android phones can't handle top games. Definitely better than Winmo games of the same name.
10. Notice how I didn't say enterprise or office integration, etc. My phone is a toy to keep me occupied at work, when out with the family and there is down time, at the gym on the treadmill, etc.
11. It's nice to show off a new feature/app of the phone to someone and not have the phone freeze on you!!!
Getting Older and Wiser ?
I came from a WM 6.5 environment where I tweaked, flashed new ROMs and Radios, and updated applications for several hours a week. What I wanted was:
. No more stylus, fingers only (I won't get into a fight over WM 6.5, no matter what I did, it was NEVER totally finger friendly).
. Larger screen (at least 4.0", my eyes aren't getting any better).
. Faster processor, more memory
. Fluid and fast OS/UI
. Something that just works and does not REQUIRE tweaking and endless flashing
. Apps that are updated automatically (some 6.5 ROMs and apps support this, but not integrated seamlessly)
. Something that let's ME use IT and doesn't use ME.
I am finished with tweaking and flashing. I did it in the beginning because I thought I had to in order to get a phone the way I liked it. After WP7, I understand there is no real need, I just got so used to it. I thought it was "normal". I now realize how much time I wasted and how the OS was driving me to waste time rather than save time.

ah yes, the number 1 reason I got wp7, to actually use the phone, instead of always tweaking/fixing it!
1/. I had a Zune HD which I enjoy immensely, WP7 is Zune HD+++
2/. I play my XBL games more than my actual XBOX games, +1 WP7 for fun games
3/. I hated tweaking my Touch Cruise and Symbian Phones
4/. I like smooth scrolling.
5/. I really didn't like the icon grid, which is why I sold my Ipod Touch and got a Zune HD in the first place.
6/. The animation speed of Bing Maps was ridiculous on the phone I played with at the T-Mo store.
7/. Not many people have it, not because it's a **** product, but because they just don't know what they're missing. I like quiet brilliance and WP7 is just that.
Quiet brilliance. I just hope for MS and our sakes that that turns into a smash hit for them somewhere down the line.
1. I wanted a different OS. Most of the other OS' seem a bit boring to me.
2. I like being an early adopter. I was with iOS (sort of) and having something that no one else has is pretty nice.
3. The apps are pretty good thus far. I can see myself getting more apps compared to Android.
4. I trust Microsoft more than Google. Mostly because my current laptop (running Windows 7) has not failed me and Google is, well, Google.
I was planning to get a Captivate but I realized that I would waste hours of my time hacking and flashing it and I didn't want to do that anymore. I wanted a phone that had great features and was just a great experience out of the box. The Focus did that for me.
1. Fluid and Intuituve UI
2. Zune
3. All the live stuff
4. Zune
5. UI

you know, i really like it when folks are positive in starting a thread. even mentioning the competition, in a positive way. kudos to you for not stooping.
also, i could have almost bought an ATT product today, except there are so few choices besides the iphone over there. tmo is having terrible connectivity problems in my area, and if there were a non-contract alternative, i -may- just give it a shot (wp7).
again, thanks for the fresh air.
Coming from Winmo6.5 (HTC Touch HD)
1) Wanted something different/New compared to what's out there already. I believe this is the only smartphone OS that has actually been designed in an artistic/consistent kind of way. Other OS' resemble desktops too much and are either too messy/cheap looking and inconsistent (Android) or just look plain and static looking (iOS app-launcher UI). Though, the home and app screen on WP could be better if the background was customisable, as well as offer more themes.
2) Liked the closed ecosystem of iOS (where all apps just work, and no more tweaking required to get the phone to perform smoothly) but wanted hardware choice. Plus I've got the iPad already, and didn't want to buy what is basically the same device.
3) Wanted to adopt a new OS that could become a major player in the smartphone industry.
1. WM 6.5 was not supported anymore
2. UI made the way I like it - look, concept, homescreen, and unified across all of apps - something I hated on other platforms because of design fragmentation
3. Stable and fast
4. Intergrated with Hotmail
5. All the Office (email, docs, OneNote) however this needs to be improved
6. Hope for a great support by MS giant and their promised commitment
7. Integrated Maps, Music, Xbox, Marketplace
I just pointed things which I thought are better than on other OSes.
P.S. I also dream of some OFFLINE apps especially dictionaries.
1. Somehing new.
2. Wife has Android, mates have BB's and iPhones... wanted something different to tell them how much their phones suck compared to mine.
3. Cloud Sync
4. Office & Exchange
5. Beautifull UI design
was due for an upgrade and able to grab a samsung focus for $30 from wally world. i though, why not? i decided it was time to let my N1 go as well as many other google products/services i had been using because i don't like googles stance on net neutrality and them crawling in bed with the government.
surprisingly, i've really enjoyed my focus. the battery life is outstanding, the camera is quite good, the screen looks great, great games, the music player rocks and i love wireless syncing, it's very fast and smooth. i'm looking forward for the bugs to get ironed out, some very necessary features added and the app store to grow. one of the BEST features is that you can simply uninstall all the bloatware crap att or any other carrier puts on there.
i hope the gates clan keeps this os fresh and up to date with some thoughtful innovations.
