Hi there,
I've just signed up so that I could reformat http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Dream_Boot_Image , but I can't seem to login to the wiki.
I've tried with Firefox 3.5 and Safari 4, both show the board software indicating a successful login, before redirecting back to the wiki where the login box is still present and "you need to login to edit.."
I tried clearing cookies for wiki.xda-developers.com, but it didn't help.
I am not sure, but probably you need to have a certain amount of Posts before you can update the wiki
Hmm, is there perhaps some way I can get around this? Really every question I have has probably been answered 100 times over, and asking them again just to generate credit seems a bit silly. The only thing I can help contribute to is organizing the existing information..
"To be able to create or edit pages, you need to be registered as a user at xda-developers.com. If you are not registered as a user then go to http://forum.xda-developers.com and click 'register' in the menu on the top of the page. Once you're logged in to the forum, you will automatically also be logged in here. If you have an xda-developers account but aren't logged in, simply click the 'sign in' link on the bottom of this page."
You should ask the admin in this concern.
Thanks corepda, Addicted2xda.
I'll see about finding an admin to ask. There is no 'sign in' link, only the standard phpWiki login box, which seems to be wired to the forum login script. However simply clicking the login button gives me a login failure (as per the paragraph you quoted), and entering my username+pw logs me in at the forum but not at the wiki..

Hmm, and you've been a member for over a year. Looks like something is broken. Anyone know who the admins are, or how to ask the forum software to message an admin?
Ok, I found the 'message admins' link and sent them a link to this thread. Yay!
Thread repoted to the staff, I am sure they will reply at the soonest to give you an appropriate reply. Good Luck.

Yeah i have had to get other users to edit the wiki when needed, but never thought to bring it up, so i'd guess it's accounts and not a xda wiki issue?
ok peeps,
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Dream_Boot_Image
You can see that i have been able to edit the said wiki. Can you give it another go and reply back here. If there is still a problem i will notify admin.

Same here:
Exactly what happens:
I'm logged into XDA i go to WIKI and choose article, click edit and the log in field pops up i enter my XDA login and it goes to the signing in pop up and loops back to the login.
I think the admins need to look into this.
I've asked Flar to get someone to look at it.
Dave
Hey Luke you are not allowed to edit WIKI because you didn't send me birthday pics.
LOL
matter is getting really hot. But I am able to edit wiki, not that much qualified to put anything that deserve change though.

Hi all,
Sorry for my late reply the issue escaped my attention.
I've been able to reproduce the issue with a test account, but am unable to fix it myself. I have notified our sysadmin and wiki admins and they will take a look at the issue as soon as possible.
Best regards,
Flar
i think it is ok that new members can't edit the wiki...i am able to do it and i posted a page few days ago so everything is ok from my point of view and the wiki is still editable
remember the wiki vandalism?
and when our ftp went down?
so don't rush to deal with it...it is just fine this way

1. This issue seems to have nothing to do with being a new member or not, my test account has the same issue and that's been here just as long as I have been.
2. Wiki vandalism has nothing to do with being a new member, a new member can just as well have useful info to share.
3. FTP downtime? what has that got to do with it? The last ftp downtime I could remember had nothing to do with new members but with us not scanning for viruses.
Best regards,
Flar

not specifically the last one...but things like the one that happened in 2005..someone bashed it..there is a whole thread about it

Hi, guys
I was just wondereing if there is a possible software out there to backup my Touch Pro 2, like the iphone where you could restore and it would be the same at the same period of time.
Thanks guys for reading, and helping. Kenichi*
No. There is absolutely no backup program ever made for the TP2.
OR
You could do a simple search and find a ton of info about what is available. Read the forum rules before posting. See this very important information, http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=488.
Locking for a lock thread!

Questions like that are best searched for over in the Themes and Apps section.
The 2 most widely-used solutions for doing a full-system backup for your TP2 are SPB Backup and Sprite Backup.
Windows Mobile Backup
Windows MyPhone works perfect for backing up and restoring all data, including texts

Yes you can lock my thread. Its fine. I found my solution, seems like you guys are very annoyed when a simple question asked. Good luck to you all. There is no need for this thread anymore.
those that just say SEARCH, why not give the info and then suggest to search..or do you just feel a over whelming need to jump on newbies cause they cannot find what they are looking for ? come on just post the info , this will help in the search results..

The problem is not about helping users. It is about letting XDA become so junked up with multiple threads about the same thing because people are too (fill in the blank) to search. Can you imagine how bad it would be if everyone who had a question just started a new thread.
In addition, if you people would read the forum rules you would be informed that searching is the first thing you do before posting. That includes in a thread or starting a new thread.
As long as "helpful" people reply to the (fill in the blank) people that ask without searching, and give them the answer, we will never have control of XDA. It just gets more and more bloated and junked up. Sorry if you don't see that.

I'd like to add that if these people can't be bothered to spend a little time do a simple thing like search for the answer to their own question then why should anyone else put any effort in ?
At one point there seemed to be a new thread almost everyday asking "My RAM is at x%". What does that achieve apart from pushing legitimate questions off the bottom of the page so people with real problems are less likely to get help ?
I think there should be a 24hr posting ban for anyone starting a thread who blatantly hasn't spent any of their own time trying to sort it out. The forums rules do state you have to search first and maybe by enforcing this we could streamline things a bit.
Is there a way I can add my own signature on here? I heard that it is in USER CP but the option isnt there ...

It may take time after reaching the 5-8 post limit for it to allow you access, this is because the process runs in the background.
And when you have enough posts, you can edit your Signature in the UserCP (on the left hand side called "Edit Signature").
Or just click here : Edit Signature

People / Bots were Posting generic messages, like "Thanks this is great" or in some cases, actual responses based on words in a thread. The post it's self was not spam (although pretty pointless), but the users signature would contain 3-4 links to an online company of varying levels of trustworthiness.
We used to find one or two of these bad boys a day. Because they didn't create new threads, nor did they make it obvious to the casual observer, they were getting away with it.
I have not seen one of the so called "signature spammers" since the rules were put in place.
Dave
I had the same question...this is an excellent way to manage spam users. Good job, looking forward to delving more into this forum and getting a signature!
I was a bit upset at not being able to have a signature. Thanks Daveshaw for explaining. Its indeed a great way to stop spammers.

But you could post it in General, and then help a few people out while you were there, in Q&A, if your device has one. Don't bother with useless posts, they will be deleted and you'll never get to 10.

Well, you might be right but its not that easy. You know I have experience in those stuff in the development forum, but I have no way to make posts there.
I dont wanna be a sort of spammer by posting stupid stuff to get all the 10 posts.
But this 10 post rule leaves no other way to accomplish...
To find a topic that I can make a useful post takes a lot of time.
If you can't spend the time to make ten legitimate posts before posting in the dev fora, then you don't deserve to post there. This is a developer forum, not a support website.

I requested that it remain open. I've helped out others with legitimate issues before here. Also, leaving it open allows mods to track spammers easily.
XDA the wonderful forum it is, but it has gone too big. Not that i'm complaining, but you're post seems to be lost many times because 100 other people posted after you especially in hot threads or ROM releases. So if you quoted someone or someone quotes you many times you skip it, or have to do a painful searches spanning 10's of pages...
Slickdeals.net (another big forum like XDA) has a wonderful system, that whenever someone quotes you're post you get a pop-up next time you log in with a link which takes you straight to the reply. I was wondering if such a system is possible here also?
Regards
BUMP
This feature would be really nice to have!
I like to idea, but I think it depends on the forum system. As I remember XDA uses vBulettin, you should check if it's possible to do this and if so you could ask one of the admins to set it. So to answer your question it's possible, but the admins won't change the source of the forum to do this.

I like this idea too. It might be too resource-intensive (we never want to add a feature that slows down the site). I'll ping our server admin to see if this would be possible.
I am really missing this type of feature!
Specifically, I know many other vBulletin forums that have a /whoquotedme.php page - it shows a list of the latest posts in which you were quoted. It greatly helps in discovering who's trying to communicate with you, answer a question you might've had, or ask one of you [without specifically sending a pm].
I believe something like http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=255285
I think it checks every post to see if there is a user id present when there is a quote in the post, and then associates a link to that post with the user who was quoted.
I haven't specifically heard of it being a resource hog, but then again I am not a vBulletin admin

Yes, it was determined to be very resource intensive, for a site with 4 million users, as every post would have to be checked as it was made, to see if it mentioned someone...

Are you referring to notifications to new replies on subscribed threads or new PMs? Those are definitely working. If your having an issue with that, we can certainly help you get to the bottom of why your not receiving yours.
When I want to go back to recent conversations I was involved in I use the "Find all posts by" link.
Click on your user name at the top right, select Statistics and there's the link - "Find all posts by your username". I've bookmarked this for easy access.
That way, if I've taken part in a conversation then I can carry on where I left off. If I don't want to see what people responded with then I obviously don't care, and that's up to me to choose. It's the easiest way to keep track of what you were involved in.

Hmmm. Well I just upgraded to a new phone yesterday so let me see if they work on the new one or not. I didn't turn them on assuming it was broken. I had an Eris and a lot of Eris users were complaining that the notifications had quit. I'll let you know.
Thanks
My notifications definitely are not working. I wiped all app caches, uninstalled the xda app, wiped data/dalvik cache and cache/dalvik cache and rebooted twice. I then reinstalled xda app, logged in and set preferences. Still no notifications and I have no idea why. Email and text messages work.

If you think of it like that way, it is...
However at slickdeals I think its implemented like whenever someone quote's, a notification is being sent to the ID whose post was quoted...that notification later pops up at bottom when that user logs on, similar to PM dialog which pops, you don't make an actual search in the post that if mentioned someone, so not that resource intensive I feel
So, I've been lurking around and starting to post, here.

No, u r not the biggest idiot.
I made my first post 5months after creating my account. All that time i made few unsuccessful attempts to create insane threads in the development section. Xda was my first online forum and now im glad that i joined it.
Things keep changing mate....
my first few days i was confused by the whole "no posting in development" thing because its xda-DEVELOPERS.com i thought every forum was developers, i came here off google and didnt know about the development SUB-sections.
it happens. theres bigger idiots around.!
under your profile is the easiest way
Forums can get hard to get used to, especially since all are different. Best thing to do when your lost, is what you did.....ask away, you may get some flamers, but ignore them, and someone will offer good advice.
I use the xda app only. We have the participated tab. It shows the threads you are part of with the most recent contributions. Is there nothing like that on the webpage?
