Hi all
I was looking for the way to cook my own ROM. There is a heaps of info for a Kiser but not a Diamond. I had decided to start a thread that will show and explain in plain language how to do it on the Diamond. The aim is to have perfectly clean ROM without any unwanted applications or tweaks. The ROM will only contain bare minimum to run PDA. Everything else can be installed with cab files. Also registry tweaks can be applied after installation.
What is more important I want this thread to be a simple to follow guide to cook a ROM so everyone can make one for themself. Since I’m not an expert I welcome any help from anyone.
I had managed to cook my 1st ROM. I had removed some applications without modifying anything else.
I have tested it and it worked ok. However you perform it on your own risk and I take no responsibility if you stuff it up. Do not remove everything at once. Remove 2-3 application and see if it works. If yyou unsure just leave it alone. When you are confident you can remove the rest of apps. Also if you want to remove Opera and TouchFlo you need to change a setup files so lets leave it for now.
You need a Kitchen and the ROM file.
Video Tutorial (rigt click and Save target as)
Extract kitchen files directly to C drive (not to desktop as shown on the screen shot)
IMAGE
Extract rom files into BaseROM folder in the kitchen.
IMAGE
Open !BEGIN and choose option 1
IMAGE
Just follow the prompts and press ENTER when asked. When you get to screen below just wait till asked to press ENTER again. This might take a while.
IMAGE
When you arrive to this screen
IMAGE
your rom preparations are complete.Hit the ENTER to close window.
Go to Kitchen folder and you notice that rom files and packages are extracted.
IMAGE
To remove unwanted applications from rom look into OEM and SYS folders. You need to delete all folders related to paticular application. (create separate folder and move all packages there instead deleting. Later on you can convert them to .cab files and install them if needed)
IMAGE
If you have some cab files and would like to add them into the rom you will need THIS application. Just start it, make sure that Remodule option is deselected, open cab file and program will create new folder containig packagage file. Make shure that PACKAGE_Diamond_ is in front of the filename. For example if you converted TomTom cab you should rename it to PACKAGE_Diamond_TomTom. Now copy the folder to OEM folder in the kitchen. Repeat process till you add everything you would like to have in the ROM.
When you delete/add everything you want start !Cook file
IMAGE
This will start OS building application. Just hit a green button and wait till it finishes. It will create os-new.nb file needed later. Close window on top (never close a DOS window) and rom building application will start.
IMAGE
Fill all the info as shown on the screenshot.
IMAGE
Use apropriate version rom (ie FR, ME etc...). As for the system select os-new.nb which is in the kitchen folder. Also you can select boot images and radios but for now we leave as it is. When ready hit Build ROM button.
Name your new rom (anything you want).
IMAGE
And hit SAVE.
A while later you should see screen below
IMAGE
Hit OK. Wait till everything finishes. Just press ENTER when asked. On the end you get message that rom is ready to flash. Hitting ENTER closes a window. All you need to do is flash it to your device.
PS Everyone is welcome to help. I need information how to update Framework and OS and where I can download it. Please post suggestions, registry tweaks and links to updated cab files for the apps removed from the rom. I will make a video tutorial after I have all info needed. I want to make easy for everyone who wants to have personalized rom.
Credits: Thank you to all who provided these great tools and these that helped in this thread.
EDIT: If you manage to create your own ROM please do not flood forum with new ROMs (unless it is something we never seen). There are experienced cooks that created really nice ROMs. Lets keep this forums clean.
There is a thread in this forum which has a simple to use kitchen. Using it is just easy as Steps 1-2-3.. But it doesn't work for some ROMs, atleast for me. By far, it is a great tool simplified in batch files.
Are you using the same tool or your own customised one?
Regards,
Carty..

Could do my... i just finished my one yesterday a perfect clean rom not staffed wth litter....i used the surface kitchen and based on ce 0s 5.2 20273 wwe a bit customized the manila that's all....
Is it a clean ROM with most apps removed? Do you want to share please.
Good initiative!
I really want to know what is the true performance of the Diamond, running it with just the minimum required.
Even when disabling TF3D and other extras, I find it so slow compared to other WM phones having less MHz... I just don't understand why.
Uploading my ROM now. It is slow. I will post the link tomorrow.
Just a tip, A clean rom is very good if you going to stick with what you got in the rom and possible a few otther apps by cabs, If your going to installed the same apps which are in a full rom then the clean rom with those apps in will make you lose valuable storage space rather than them cooked in and sometimes device will start to feel sluggish but it all depends on how many cabs youre going to re-install.
TIps , there are certain apps which are cooked in doesnt take up any storage space but if install by cab you will then use up valuable space.

Really? Dutty, could you please explain that a little bit further? Don't we have a set amount of storage space? i.e. If you cook some apps in, then you lose some of that space. If you add them later, you lose some of that space. But at least you could uninstall them.
So please correct me if I have misunderstood and I'm only guessing, but are you saying there is a part of the ROM that is only available to the OS 'image', and cannot be accessed in the normal way once the device is up and running? And are you using that space to install some apps? If so, how much space in the 'OS image' part of the ROM is available for that purpose? I would like to start cooking my own ROM's, but I don't want to waste ANY storage space that I am not forced to.
I would really appreciate if you could shed a little light on that for me! Cheers
Thanks, this is great.

bascally there some programs which ar cooked in for e.g Remote desktop, If cook this in its 1.45mb I think, I will only use up only about .45mb and save 1mb of storage space, If i install this by cab I would use up all of the 1.45mb storage space
Perfect
I was hoping/loocking fopr a thread like this! BUT
Could anybody explaine to me how to dump a rom?
The one I am using right now is pretty good and I want to modify
it and loose all the unwanted programs...
But what happens to all the .cab programs I have installed at the moment?
Do they "get dumped" as well so I can preserve them as OEM? Or do I only dump the "base ROM"?
And what about the Reg tweaks? Do they get dumbed aswell?
Thanks for the help...

Thanks for the reply, so what is the reason behind that... How can that 1MB be shaved off? Is it compression?

And to top this, apps that are cooked run faster than an installed cab.
But for some, a ultra light rom works becouse they have not ,uch progs to use, and need to install less cabs.

Just a short notice, lolek:
I see you've extracted the kitchen to your profile folder.
You'd better extract it to the root of your drive, like C: or D:
batch files have a tendency to disliking spaces in file/folder names as well as names longer than 8+3.

exactly also if you look at some of the benchmarks as well the lite roms are not much better or even some of the full roms are faster, so its all about what u really need in the rom, if your going to install everything back in your rom with cabs, its better to go with a full rom
Thanks for the input. This is what I was hoping for. The aim is to have simple tutorial for anybody to create their own ROMs. I'm off to work tonight but I'll update 1st post tomorrow.
I have updated 1st post. It shows how to convert cab files to packages and add them to the rom. I apologize for the slow progress but I'm still learning myself.
I have asked around how to update framework and OS. As soon as I get reply and test it I’ll post it here.
I know there many experienced cooks so please don’t be shy and help create this guide.
When guide is complete I’ll make movie showing whole process.

thanks a lot man!
Having a Slight problem with the surface kitchen.
During the process of extracting a rom at the stage of '2a.ExtractDumpIMGFS.cmd'
'Recmod.exe' crashes.'
anyone know why and how i can solve this?
Thanks in advance
Ok guys, so this is my new thread. I will keep information, screenshots, and files updated here.
IT WORKS!! I've been disassembling and reassembling this cab file for a while now. I finally got it pretty stable. I removed some files that are not needed and added the appropriate files to work on the Excalibur. I tweaked shellres.dll so the Storage Card issue is gone! I also tweaked and reinserted the appropriate CPR files. I replaced the thin looking top bar icons in the original tshres.dll to the 96dpi icons. MUCH BETTER! If you are using Kavana's ROM, disable ClockOnTop as it doesn't display properly. The program seems to uninstall just fine as well if you're worried about that.
Version info:
Version 1.70 works on WM6.5 based WWE ROMS
Version 1.6c works on Kavana and Rose based WWE ROMS
NOTE: PLEASE TEST AT YOUR OWN RISK. THIS APP WILL WORK ON MOST WM6.1 WWE (World Wide English) ROMS. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE OR LOSE DATA. ALL PHONES AND ROMS ARE DIFFERENT AND UNKNOWN CONDITIONS MAY OCCUR (you may lose data). Thanks to lukybandit for the original post and enyone else who contributed.
Directions:
- For WM6.5, run 3VO_96DPI_WM65_v1.70.cab or (1.6c for WM6.1)
- Reboot when it asks
- With 1.6c, if your topbar icons appear as white blocks, try running OOK_96DPI_WM61_Patch.cab (and reboot after install)
- Important: Do not run OOK_96DPI_WM61_Patch.cab if your top bar icons appear fine
- To uninstall, go to Remove Programs and uninstall it then REBOOT
- **Note: If upgrading from a previous version, uninstall it first, REBOOT, then install the new version
If you have custom CPR files in the \Windows directory, back them up. This app installed modified CPR files in the \Windows directory to accomodate for the increased screen size and resolution.
Screenshots below:
UPDATE: 1/17/2009, 10:45PM PST, 1.5b works great on ROSE based ROMS! Fixed background misalignment. Note that background image should be 320x240 or so in size. I edited CPR files in \Windows to fix this. If you have a custom CPR file (due to a weather program or something), back it up and then edit the first line and use these values, <Image ID="Background" Opacity="1.0" Top="-17" Width="320" Height="213"/>. Still have the Comm Manager bug in Rose ROMS, working on it.
UPDATE: 1/18/2009, 12:40PM PST, 1.52b for Kavana and 1.53b for ROSE. Fixed some font issues and resized the Rinku topbar icons to fit 96dpi.
UPDATE: 2/21/2009, 10:20PM PST, 1.54 for ROSE ROMS uploaded. Fixed some call screen background problems.
UPDATE: 2/22/2009, 6:30PM PST, 1.55 for ROSE ROMS uploaded. Fixed Opera Mini font problem and adjusted other font sizes. 1.53 for Kavana WM61 ROMS uploaded and also fixed Opera Mini fonts (good find, fliparsenal).
UPDATE: 5/8/2009, 6:20PM PST, 1.6 for ALL WM6.1 ROMS. Comm Manager still not pretty but working on it.
UPDATE: 5/9/2009, 10:20PM PST, 1.6c for ALL WM6.1 ROMS. Updated InnerCircle DLL for 96dpi icon. Comm Manager NOW works in 1.6c (screenshot below) except for the "settings" soft key. To access settings, use settings/connection menu. Should be fixed by next release.
UPDATE: 5/12/2009, 10:50PM PST, 1.6c still for ALL WM6.1 ROMS. Uploaded OOK_96DPI_WM61_Patch.cab for ROMs that have a problem reading the bitmap resource from the DLLs. This works on Kavana's China ROMs and other ROMS not yet tested on. Please test.
UPDATE: 6/14/2009, 1:45PM PST, 1.70 up for testing on WM6.5. It may have bugs as I kinda slapped it together due to overwhelming requests! Please test and report bugs.
Files:
3VO_96DPI_WM65_v1.70.zip
OOK_96DPI_WM61_v1.6c.zip - With new updated Comm Manager (please test)
OOK_96DPI_WM61_Patch.cab - Patch for China and other ROMs
Please continue bug testing and post your results.
i installed teh 1.55 for rose roms and its really weird now. first i uninstalled 1.53, rebooted, ran the new dpi file, let it go to homescreen, then installed new 1.55. then rebooted. now all my home screen layouts have missing topbar icons when i navigate away from teh home screen. and the in-call screen is not fixed. WORST part is: the 1.55 dpi fix doesnt appear in my remove prgrams OR sktool installed programs for me to uninstall

Thats bizzare. I am running 1.55 on my Dash right now and no problems. And it appears in the Remove Programs list. Not sure what happened. Are you sure you didn't run the Kavana one by accident? Reboot the phone, run the installer again without running dpi.ccs. It should then appear in remove programs. Then try to remove it as needed.
Also, did you reboot after you uninstalled 1.53? Very important.

if you have any of the rose roms celecmd should be included. its called command processor in start menu
run dpi.css and it wont do anything it lookslike but it did.
the only thing now is the wallpaper fix, it doesnt stretch all the way to the bottom of the screen, not a big deal

Hmmmmmm, thought I fixed that. Can you post a screenshot?
Everything is good, i like it but I cant get the commanager to appear. It just loads but never comes thru. Also, Windows Media isn't Stretched...
It looks great, but now it's a little slow my dash freezes in the when I access picture & videos. When I try to close then in task manager they will not close. I have to turn off the phone. Also the jogger started dancing around on its own. again I had to soft reset to clear up the problem. These are all issues I did not have on the Rose Rom ( Ricky & Stylez ver )
oh i think its cause i need to edit the .cpr..thing is i cant find it in the windows directory. which files? all i see are the .cpl
I installed the Rose Rom version and everything works great, except that my windows start menu icon does not look like the one in the picture. The icons in my start menu are also a little grainy now and I had to increase my default font size through Accessibility in the settings menu to make the text messages and contacts list larger and readable.
Does anyone know of an easy font changer program to increase font size and pick a different font?
hey i just installed it now...i am having the same problem as when you first came out with it...after i installed it the nrg weather program icons do not work...as i figured since they weren't made for this...i am using kavana's rom 080408 if that's correct...anyways i am being lazy but i thought you guys will know what weather program works with it..thanks
nrgs mini weather works fine, usually i have to reinstall it aftere installing the 96dpi. try that.
@fliparsenal....thanks
i feel like an idiot...
anyone can help me wit editing the cpr files so i can fix the wallpaper issue?
Hello to all guy`s here i just have One very simple question... will be fine if someone can answer me clear.
Befor i use only Symbian Phones and all was diferent from NOW!
Now i have HTC touch HD and sometimes i really think that is very confused to operate with this device what i mean exactly is..
I read alot in this forum and in other forum`s.. and i can`t understand One Thing.
Why for example if i wana change my Start Menu Icon.. or Action buttons or even my theme i need to do so many confused things like change this file, rename this.. overwrite that.. extract this. all this is 1st confused second is not good for the phone and for YOU.
I will explain you why..
For example now i wana change my Start Menu Icon.. but after i read alot things im not sure do im able to change it
So for example if i change it.. after a while someday if i wana get back my stock icon`s what i need to do? I will forgot what exactly i rename, change where witch file i put and etc.. and this is just for one Start Menu Icon.. imagine when you change and costumaze the whole bar`s icons etc.. after few mounths im sure you will not know witch file exactly is modifet and etc!
The question is.. befor when i use Symbian all was so clear and easy i wana change something just install the app and that`s all if i don`t wana use this icon`s or themes anymore i can easy just remove them and that`s all!
So i wonder and asking myself why here not have the same things in .CAB`s
For example i wana change my icon`s just installing some .cab and all is done when i don`t want them just uninstall all will be so clear and easy and good for the phone.
I don`t understand from this things for this reason im asking you Maybe is very hard all this icon`s font`s and other items that the whole forum write tip`s how to change this how to chagne that can`t be made in a single .CAB file?
We can make our life better with a simple .CAB installation no need to change any manilla files or overwrite any dll and etc....
P.S Sorry for my english but it`s not my Mother.. language like you can see
Regards
ive got most hings in cab files so it doesnt bother me and i flash my rom so many times that i dont even have the time to get bored with something because i dont instal it after i flashed
so i think this is a thing thats different for every user
Do u have .CAB for change of the icon`s or start menu icon?
ive got one for all the icons on top with the picture that pulls the start
the site is full of them
and i had one that only the top left one made to a scull
Sorry for bodering you but like i say im new on all this with the WM can you please give me this cab`s that you have for the scull logo and the other to install and see how they will look like on my phone!
Thanks in advance

No need to markup your story like that. People will read it with default settings as well... ...If you can't remember what you've changed I advise you not to change anything, or keep a text file containing information about your personal tweaks.
The reason that it's quite cumberstone to change things is because Microsoft never wanted you to change those parts of the software. Some clever people found a way to get pass the ideas of Microsoft and managed to to change parts of the OS that's on your device.
This is the same reason why you can't put all files in one CAB file. Some files are read only files and need some "special attention" to be modified\replaced. Second thing is that ROM files depend on their language. Most compatibility will be achieved by using a WWE ROM
You can apply changes to the OS easier by using a program like Wisbar Advance. But you will notice that the system will become slower. Thats why a lot of people prefer to do some freeware tweaking to their devices. I hope this story clears up some things for you...
Thank you for all you wrote but the point was other anyway i find some apps i was looking for the question was why the peoples don`t make .CAB`s and do it the hardest way so to change some icon`s font clock`s and everything all this is possible with a signle CAB file no need to change something or overwrite or re-name and someday when you don`t wana use this you can just uninstall the .CAB that was the point i already use some of the .CAB`s that change icon`s etc and its perfect!
Thank`s to the miniterror
I'm using Dutty's 2.3 Xtreme ROM. The startmenu is based on the Rhodium roms (looks like the program tab, but with nicer icons ). However, the good-looking icons are only those that came with the rom, for example WMPlayer, settings, file explorer, etc. When you add a shortcut from lets say TomTom, it looks all crap with jagged edges. It's seems the iconholder upscales the icon or something so it's no longer at it's native resolution. I would like to be able to change the icon used for a certain shortcut myself to perhaps a higher resolution alternative.
It seems the used icon is controlled bij strings in HKLM\software\HTC\Manila. The string's name is the .exe used in the shortcut. It contains a file location to \windows\MPI_xxx.qct (\windows\MPI_wmplayer.qct, \windows\MPI_camera.qct, etc.). I know this, because when I change the path in lets say the wmplayer.exe string to that of the file explorer MPI file, the icon changes in the start menu. However, when I make a new string with a stringname for tomtom (tomtom navigator.exe) and make it's value the same as the fileexplorer, nothing happens...
So... help? I don't know what to try next due to my limited knowledge on the subject. Who can help me devise a way to use custom icons in the new startmenu?
You have to use the full path, not just the file name. Also, you have to use quotes.
For example: I wanted Resco File Explorer to use HTC's explorer icon, so I created a new string with the name:
"\Program Files\Resco Explorer\Explorer.exe" (quotes included)
And value:
\windows\MPI_fexplorer.qtc (no quotes here)

Yes... Thanks! Can I use it in WM 6.5? Just want to know because I dont want to do a hard reset when I fail.
I change my program icon directly in the program.exe file. this way both from startmenu and programs show the new icons. use resource hack to do it. you can also hack into the installation cab and change it there. so every time you change rom and reinstall, the new icon is there. just my way......need helpon that you can pm me

Thanks for help and advice m6silver. I appreciate all your help because Im not very good when it comes to customizing icons.
Thanks for the links gfreek... It's working great and Im also using your WM6.5 Medium size and Wm 6.5 Extra Start for Folders. Thanks to you for that nice and easy to install cabs.
Now my only problem is the icons in Manila "Program" I want to change it to High Quality Icons.
All,
Sorry for the delay on this one, but I have had a few things going on as well. In any case,
ENJOY IT!!!!!!
Note: This is a UC Rom. When the zip is decompressed, you will see a folder called XDA-UC that has a bunch of cabs inside. Place that folder (and all of its contents in the root of your Storage Card. Right after the initial boot is done, soft reset the device. When it starts up again, UC will start by itself saying that it will install all the contents in the UC folder. Be patient since it will seem as if the device weren't doing anything. When its done, it will ask you if you want to reset it. The whole installation of cabs takes between 5 and 7 minutes (because of Manila)
changelog:
*Brand New Build 21887. Keep in mind that this is the old style of bottom and top bars and with less new stuff. However this is more stable.
*Added the missing Phone Codes folder from 28205
*Dialer no longer has the issue of the "side bar".
*Still cannot include ezinput (looking for a solution)
*Included Hero Style Titanium found here. It is located in the UC folder, so if you don't want it, simply erase all the files that have the name CHero or Hero on them. (thanks chriscsh)
*Removed Rhodium notification enhancements because of some graphical glitches with the rom.
*Skinned top bar (nice looking icons at last )
Post some feedback and Enjoy it!
I cannot put pictures right now, but might do it some other time.
*Manila Home Tab Weather does not work out of the box. First, set up the weather in M2D's weather tab (choose your city), then install the attached cab, and finally Soft Reset. (thanks codf4ther)
First Post mine ftw
Downloading now, looking forward to a try, thanks!!
Egzthunder- Is there anyway you can put the Hero Style Titanium on Build 28205? I'm really liking the newer builds with the start menu on the bottom bar.
Thanks

I will save you some work. Install the cab in this post first and use all the cabs that have either Hero or CHero from the UC folder in this rom. I honestly did not like it all too much, which is why I might not make another build with it. It has potential though, I just don't think it's worth it.
changelog:
*Still cannot include ezinput (looking for a solution)

Maybe you are going about it the wrong way by trying to integrate a cab. vin made a post here saying that there are two OEMs required to get it working:
Package_Mega_Shared Modules (for keyboard )
Package_Mega_Touch_Options (for Manila slyder)
I'm not sure where to tell you get those bundles, but they might be in the upload that vin made here.
I am having the issue of tap here to launch TF etc....
I remember this happening to folks who installed the cdma weather fix before setting up in weather tab, however I have not loaded it yet and am seeing this issue...
Should I install the fix .cab and see if it fixes itself? Or did I possibly install the manilla .cabs in the wrong order? If there is a right order??
Thanks!
I am having the same issue, Tap for Touchflo hangs... Tried two (2) different versions of 2d.

You mean you are not using the xda-uc folder that is in the zip file? When you uncompress the zip, you will see a folder called xda-uc which you have to place in the root of your storage card. After your first boot, reset the device and UC will launch by itself. There is no need to manually install anything.

See above post. I will update the main post to reflect the fact that this is a UC rom, which I forgot to write.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I'm going to install tomorrow and see how it works for me.
Followed your folder instructions, just wasn't patient enough, it installed properly, testing it now. Thanks for your work!
stable is first thing we need for a cell phone. five stars
Thanks for the tip thunder, I extracted the cabs and was installing them individually. Can't wait to finish my work and get working on this : )
This build is QUICK!!!
I've been running this rom for about 24 hours now and very impressed. I have installed the ezinput cabs and they seem to be working. The rom is fast, responsive and stable. I have not found anything not functioning. My only negative thus far is the top notification bar when you have missed calls or messages is very small, making it hard to tap with my big fingers. Yes it must be running REALLY well if that's my only complaint after 24 hours. I can't evaluate battery life yet because constant installing and tinkering isnt the proper way to test, but i will report back.
any screenshots???
