Howto: Themeing for RC33...It's all about the compression! - G1 Themes and Wallpapers

So i got FadetoBlue ported to RC33 and i didn't have to rebuild from scratch!
I am exhausted so i am not going to put all of the info here but just enough for the devs to spend 4 hours tweaking their images. I started around 11:15PM and finished at 3:00AM, so its a long process!
I used Adobe Photoshop CS4 as my image editor and instead of just saving the images, i used "File/Save for web and devices" then set the preset to PNG-24. i did this for every image i had changed, most of them were around 3K-6KB. After compressing them most were around 300 Bytes - 1.1 KB. As an example the Music.apk drawable folder in FadetoBlueRC30 had 113,256 bytes in it, after compressing the PNGs were 43,548 bytes.
I will update this thread tomorrow with more information. But to give you an idea usually a theme file is larger then the original theme from Stericson. Below is the difference in file sizes!
Original 9,246,716 bytes
FadetoBlue 9,231,087 bytes
My theme is actually smaller then the original! this should help with speed and stability...more free memory while Android is running!
ok im going to bed now...goodnight and happy tweaking!
Also I want to thank Stericson for keeping me company in IM while i did all this! Set the standard mang!

Great job man. Knew you would get it. Fadetoblue is done...time for a new one huh?
Stericson

LMAO i wish it was done, the compression caused a few bugs and i got a few good suggestions in the thread so ill be working on it still...im glad i dont have to much into the Rockband theme! this was hell!

It's worth it though, makes for a better theme that runs faster.

Yes in the long run i will happy...but at this moment it was hell! haha =)

ahha damn it, you beat me to it. I have a tool that i use and its much easier then photoshop. I've read that photoshop is is horrendous at png compression. I'm using PNGOUTWin as it has already compressed a large percent of my whole theme 8) Best thing about the app is it has batch encoding! so here you guys go. a link to the program that has a 30 day trial 8) enjoy enjoy
http://www.ardfry.com/pngoutwin/Download.htm

Awesome find, i might have to add another tool to my arsenal...thanks for the link.
oh and btw, photoshop doesn't compress the files as much as whatever tool google used, but if you use index(save for web and devices) the file then save it, it compresses much better then just the plain ol' save.
The batching will save a bunch of time, that's for sure!

yup, im currenly redoing stericson update file for original icons and will repost it for all theme users to use. seems like google didnt optimize their own png's once its done i'll post it for other theme users to use so that we dont have this size limitation on our themes. who know, this might even increase the overall navigation of our OS

this is nice I will have to start compressing my images. still think we all should still use light rc33 and just add the sounds to the sd card .with talk of flash and more updates to come we will need the room.

Great!
I also discovered Save to Web did a great job for small icons with little transparency, but I wasn't sure if 24bit would work, so I was still saving to 8bit which sacrificed a bit on quality.
Thanks for the info!

good look damnitpud, so is this theme 100% or is there some fine tuning lacking? i noticed it kept giving me a forceclose on the android proces.. maybe its just that i didnt have my sim card in. I put it in and so far so good.

The 8-bit is fine for small icons, but there isn't any transparency at all with 8bit. That is why some of my icons have white borders around them. I did notice it made some of the icons look cool for the white border, but some look horrible.

Ahh thanks, i plan on being here for awhile, as long as i have a G1. As for the force closes, did you happen to have your apps or caches saved to the SD before? I think its a good idea to wipe when going up to RC33. I have noticed a few things that were weird. I had an issue with Anycut, but that was before my theme and a reinstall of the app fixed the problem.

I'm seriously considering buying it too. I found a valid pirate key for it, but seriously, a program that good from a small company (maybe just one developer), definitely deserves our support.

[THEME] Megaman (Hv1.5A2SD)

Had so many ideas floating around in my head about this one I couldn't help but use my day off yesterday to throw it together. Compiled JrBourque's blue VK for this build. worked out pretty well =)

This is the pre-status bar version. That's my next step and I'll likely be posting an update to it w/ the status bar and notification background modded to match. Then i think I might take a few days off lol (aside from posting the Gambit theme once my homeboy tinkers w/ the clock for me). I haven't stopped since I started working on my Amazing Spider-Man theme nearly 2 weeks ago lol.
More screenshots...

Resigned? I've never had to sign anything other than the update.
Adding the guide lines using either 9patch or if you know how to do it using CS3 and signing the .9.png using eclipse. Thats what i am talking about as far as signing.
great theme, can u port it to JF 1.5?

yeah I spent about 3-5 hours trying to get eclipse to work right. Once I figured that out I spent another 2-3 hours trying to master the skill of editing in 9patch, following the steps precisely but just couldn't get it to look right =L It was too foreign to me and I just ended up giving up in frustration. It seems what the image looks like is variable on where you place the markers on the top and left columbs. Just couldn't get the image to look right no matter what I tried. And yeah... was following damnitpud's instructions. =( I guess I'm just not naturally inclined for editing in 9patch as some others might be.
But I'm pretty okay w/ the MP3 player as long as the inner isn't stretching out of the body or anything like that. When I copy the file from a Haykuro G build into the 1.5 as I have w/ this one, it just seems to take the same shape as the default mp3 player and that looks aight by me since I can't seem to comprehend 9batch editing he he. Thanks for the feedback man.
I've seen some of your work and work by others on here and the graphic design elements of the themes puts mine to shame lol. I'm just really inpsired to make themes based on sources of influence, like Spider-man, Megaman etc. etc. =) I keep it real basic compared to most but I have fun with it and that's all that really matters in the end I guess.
Aight. Got the Statusbar done. Was tempted to dive deeper and make all the notification icons blue as well... But it looks good as is and I don't think I'd have the time to mod the 60+ images required to acheive that end lol.

Thanks to the help of Manup... I FINALLY have a semi-sound comprehension of editing the stretchable images (IE the images that are used for the music widget and VK among other things). Thus I'm currently working on making a custom music widget, and might change up the notification are a lil more before I'm completely finished. Once I am ill prolly make an attempt to port it to JF. If its as easy as pasteing over all my modded apks into a JF build it should be a snap (any insight/input on this from anyone else on here would be much appreciated =)).
This theme is looking nice. I know my bro would love it. Is there any way you can make one of Zero? I tend to like more the Z-Zaber than the Buster, lol..
just my .2 cents..

update -
Music player skinned. Notification background changed out. I cleaned up the image on the menu background so it's not so obvious that it's tiled and looks a LOT cleaner now. I thought that image looked a lot better than the one I was previously using for the notification background so I used it there instead as well. Here's the updated link -

Oh yeah huh? That's a good idea =) unfortunitely my stinkin computer won't let me do screenshots from a DVD no matter what program I'm running it with =( which limits me to whatever I can find running image searches. I also wanted to incorporate as many characters/ships as I could into the clock, it being a centerpiece of sorts. Tried a few dif ideas and ended up liking that one the best. Kept it simple and clean. Everything else I tried got too muddy and didn't look sharp enough.
It requires you to redraw the image, but here it is.

Not the US one (works fine w/ UK and ADP, I'm running ADP 1.51 myself)). Haven't tried it myself (so feel free to give it a shot and let me know) but from what I understand, if flashed w/ the US build of 1.51 you won't have the modified launcher (app drawer) elements of the theme due to an extra measure that JF took to compress the files within the Launcher archive... (that seems to be a headache to edit so I haven't bothered messin w/ the US build at all).

It's because of those cram things that you have to go around and stuff, but it does work on ADP 1.51.
Hey was going to tell you something, or a little suggestion, but after seeing some other themes, I was wondering that instead of posting full pictures for icons, is there anyway that you can post figures. If you look at Nightmare before Christmas one I'm sure you would understand what i mean. That's an idea of course, still like your work so don't get me wrong *shakes fist incase*

Yeah it's possible. It's all variable on the source that i get my hands on. I'm not sure if KilaTattz actually created those icons (drawing them from scratch) or if he found them somewhere/created them by editing a source... but I imagine a lot of times you see icons like that, they're even drawn from scratch or taken from a windows desktop theme of somekind.
I usually create my icons from pictures cuz there's a lot more to work with. In some cases they're almost figurine-like (see the swordfish Browser icon, Dialer icon, Calculator icon, and youtube icon from the bebop them if youre running it, or even better, most of the icons i did in my megaman theme - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=515742 ).
But I'm guessing he's got legit enough graphic design skills that he drew them himself or he found a killer desktop theme that he pulled the icons from.
when working w/ Bebop and Champloo, Robotech and Spider-man... desktop themes are/were either non existant or completely outdated. There are some icons I used from a windows desktop theme that looks straight outta the 90s on my spider-man theme lol. They looked aight though. If you have Openhome you should scope it out. They jus threw it up on the Market via an Openhome skin the other day.

Boot Animation Tester[V 1.02][Will be Theme tester soon]

The other day I read that awesome Tut on how to create a Boot Animation by kusotare [link] because of this I started creating a few animations. While doing this I would test them out by flashing them, I did not like this so I created an applet that will basically animate them for you... Its pretty simple code, I am sure anyone on here could do it(and im sure some one has) but I figured I would share it with anyone who wanted it.
All you have to do is extract the .zip into a folder, and when you want to test your animations drop 'android-logo-mask.png' and 'android-logo-shine.png' into the folder. After you put them into the folder, open(double click) 'BootAnimationTest.htm'. This will open up your browser and show you the animation.
Requirements:
-This requires that you have the JRE installed
-'android-logo-mask.png' should be 256x480(Other sizes will work, but the app will resize them)
-'android-logo-shine.png' should be 512x480(Other sizes will work, but the app will resize them)
If you want, until I make it fix it automatically you can
find dimensions of android-logo-mask.png n put those values in BootAnimationTest.htm
Click to collapse
Future:
-In the future I plan to make it were it doesnt matter what size your images are.
-Turn this into a full fledged theme tester!
Feature Request: If you have an idea that you want me to add to this let me know, and most likely I will do so.
Just added a Video!
Change Log:
V 1.02:
-Added buttons that increase/decrease the speed of the shine

Thanks for the kudos on my tutorial. I had a tough time doing it my first time around, and after six or seven hundred of my friends with G1s asked me how i did it, I finally broke down and did the tutorial.
On the other hand, I absolutely love what you've done with the applet. That will certainly make it easier for people to come up with something they'll really like instead of having to tweak-and-flash as most of us have been doing for ages. Excellent work!

Excellent work...
This is an awesome tool, it'll help me cut down on wearing out my NAND flashing theme updates over and over just to test the boot screen. Thanks a lot!
Edit: Just tried it out on one of my old non used boot animations I had, the 'animation' scroll should be faster in my opinion. I remember seeing it speeding by at least 2x the speed as the applet does it. BUT the buttons to increase/decrese speed would be ideal. Some people may prefer it slower, some fast.
Again great job on this, you saved a lot of trouble!

I understand it would be a 'rough draft' sort of thing considering the .9.png and such but really just to see everything 'together' before flashing it would be a welcome change than what we can do now.

Edit - Ok, so I just posted the new build. This build just added the speed buttons. By the end of the week I hope to have a build that is a full theme tester up. I also think that later on down the road I will make this into a JFrame instead of an applet. Also, what is the deal with the .9.png?

.9.png are images that Android resizes to work in any situation. like the buttons. sometimes they are small sometimes they take up the whole screen. you have to sign them in eclipse for them to work right. check out this thread for a more detailed description of them and what it takes to get them working properly.
if you do make a theme tester I will have kids just so i can name them Burlyskink.
For theme and boot testing...did anybody see the news story about running an emulated Android os (complete with G1 skin) on a Windows PC?
It looks just like a brand new fresh stock G1 and it works. I wonder if that could test out themese and mods?

For theme and boot testing...did anybody see the news story about running an emulated Android os (complete with G1 skin) on a Windows PC?

Are you talking about the standard emulator that comes with the official Android SDK?

man, you are a beast when it comes to themes.
i love the way that app drawer looks, did you just make the image a certain size and let the system replicate it to fill the screen or make the image the whole size of what it would occupy on the screen and space the bars to sit under the apps. that's cool looking. (hmmm new ideas)

Feel free to open up the theme and look, the dimansions are 320x? I forget the height right now... I just used my eye to try and place the docks as close to the icons... its not perfect but I thought it looked good... landscape kinda patterns but not too noticable in my opinion
Thanks and good luck theming
Alright bedtime! Lol

[REQ] Star trek theme...

Wondering if anyone has any info. I'm looking for a star trek look/feel but more like the actual interface they use on the show. Not just a wallpaper and some colors...
More like a launcher.
But here's what I've found so far. A good font goes a long way.
I was using fluxed/adw theme, adw ex with a bunch of setting tweaks and metamorphed theme, then blew it up with a kernal flash, bad nandroid.
But alas with a dead pc and nothing but a netbook not much I can modify other than what already exists.
See pics for inspiring...
Any ideas? Not looking for free labor, just ideas... ie: star trek font prolly not practical...

Funny story, I was actually thinking about doing something like this yesterday. But I realized its way over my head. Too many xml edits
Sent from my S-off'd, Synergised Evo 3D
I'll upload the final frontier font I use later today
sent from my fully armed and operational space phone

The ones I've tried were not so great. Found one called the boldly go, but on small stuff it was no good. many thanks if yours will work!

Hmmm...I'd be interested in something like that too. Have you tried requesting this in the Themes sub-forum? A lot of themers spend all their time there instead of in Q&A.

Someone requested it a couple weeks ago, and DreamsForgotten and Shane talked about it and said it would be extremely difficult to attempt.
If anyone were to attempt it, it would have to be very small steps to start with. Maybe the Starfleet logo for the vertical unlock icon, and the Enterprise for horizontal. A themed Swype would be doable. And maybe the little spinning hub things on the engines as loading icons. Thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

Yes, extremely difficult. Why we say that is because you will have to create lots of images out side of just editing the images in the apk (I would think this would be better done as a launcher than a framework theme), then layering the buttons, text, and other images within the xml, as well as repositioning all of it. The last issue is the 4x4 grid that the phone uses. Those I don't see that as a deal breaker, it is another obstacle.

That's kinda what I thought... launcher rather than framework hack. Perhaps butchering adw or something.
The pulldown animations really have potential too... something simple like glowing conduits that are very opaque and dark...
And it might not be so difficult to rob some architecture from a winblows theme as the huge icon widgets would make a better base. Widgets may be a direction to take. I have a copy of creative suite 2 on my mac but the hdd is soooo slow I hate using it. I could do some graphic work. Anyone got any links of a video showing the computer in action on a screen that would be a cool port? I've googled youtube to little avail...
