hi
when i bought my artemis, it came with an external gps receiver which i have never used because the internal gps is doing it for me... i have microsoft streets and maps on my laptop and it would be great if i could connect the external gps that came with my artemis...
the connector is called MS-147-C(LP)-2 and it looks like in the picture
i hope some1 can answer me this time
Removed (mis-read the question!)
What you have got on the picture is only an External Antenna. It is NOT a GPS receiver. It is used to only boost the signal in poor conditions (ie in a vehicle).
There is no way to directly connect this Antenna to a PC/Laptop. You will need a real GPS receiver (PCMCIA/ExpressCard/USB) and if you buy one - you will (most probably) not need the Antenna.
On the other hand you most probably do not need it anyway. You can use the GPS receiver on your Artemis and share it (over USB/bluetooth) with your laptop.
There are already lots of threads and guides here. Just search!

I CAN NOT TRACK MY CURRENT LOCATION!
HOW CAN I FIX IT UP?
THANKS
DO I NEED A EXTRA GPS RECEIVER?
I THOUGHT THE XDA lls ALREADY GOT A ONE, ISN'T IT?
Nope, you'll need an external GPS receiver
Maybe you mistook GPRS for GPS ?
and : NO NEED TO SHOUT !
hi,thanks
OK! forget the tomtom
if I just wanna a tool to help me track where I am normal when I am a tourist.
what kind programme will you help me advising?
You have the right program, you are lacking hardware, namely a gps receiver.
cheers.
where I can get a valuable one?
The cheapest place that I found is on ebay www.ebay.co.uk
all right!
whcih brand is ok for me ?
do you think the GPS receiver will be a little big only for handy?

one purpose i'm looking to use the m2000 is sat nav. i've read tomtom is the way to go. has anyone got this setup, and did you use tomtom reciever, does it make a difference?
i've seen on http://www.expansys.com/d_gps.asp
tomtom gps for smartphone and tomtom navigator 3, both quite similar apart from smartphone has card with pre-installed maps.
can someone verify all i would need is tomtom maps on cd, so can copy to card and a reciever?
thanks
You will need the full tomtom program with voice files, gps driver and maps, plus a suitable gps receiver and memory card of at least 128 megs. If you are going to use it purely in car then you can use a cheap wired system which will power both phone and gps, you will also need a cradle or mount of some kind, Window mounts can be expensive when they fall off the window and break your phone. You also need to check that your windscreen doesnt have metallic elements that will block the signal, if it does then you will need to either use an external antenna, a re-radiating antenna or a bluetooth gps which can be located in the rear of car on parcel shelf.
I just read over TOM TOM, etc, and I realize it uses a COM port when you plug it in the reciever (usually in your car), im wondering if this is a required thing. Can't I just install TOM TOM and on the go, connect to GPRS and find where I am? How does this all work?[/code]
TomTom, like all the other nav programs, expects to receive GPS data, usually in NMEA 0183 format (a simple text-based protocol). Most GPS units provide a serial interface, since it's cheap and is supported by just about every computer around, so that's how the nav software expects to read the data.
If you could somehow get location info from GPRS or from the GSM signal itself (look around here for a program called Cell Profiler -- it does something like that), then translate it to NMEA format and spit it out a fake comport that the nav software could read from, that'd work, but it's a lot of work, and won't be nearly as accurate as a good GPS.
GPS units are pretty cheap -- I've seen wired ones in the $40 range, and even the best BT ones can be had for $150. Compared against GPRS charges, it's quite the bargain. I've used an Altina GBT708 BT GPS for several months, and it works very well even with the SX66's subpar BT implementation. I'm about to upgrade to a Globalsat BT 338, which is supposed to have much better GPS reception.
Im afriad not mate. But if you want to use it on the go, i.e. "Foot Patrol" instead of in your car then go for a bluetooth gps reciever. I recommend the new ones that use the SiRF Star III chipset. Heard their meant to be pretty good.
Hope this helps.
globalsat BT-338s work great with a BA
Hi,
Thinking about getting a TYTN and never had GPS navigation before so a bit of a noob. Whats the best kit to get, I would need the software and a GPS reciever so whats best to get.
I have found this - http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php?xProd=142&xSec=8
Or is a bluetooth GPS receiver better? - http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php?xProd=154&xSec=8
If its agains the rules to link to those websites I will delete them.
If you get the TomTom software then get the TomTom receiver as well because it will work right out of the box. Setting up non-TomTom satellite receivers in TomTom is a real pain in the backside.
I had absolutely no problems setting up TomTom with Holux GPSlim236.
Just pair the gpsreceiver with the phone and assing it a com port,
then select the correct port in TomTom. Works like a charm.
TomTom will even enable blutooth by itself.
Holux GPSlim 236
Also using the Holux without any problems. Small device with good battery lifetime and fast fix. Buy a small GPS so you don't have to leave it in your car. Thieves like them now everyone is taking his mobile out and radios tend to be build in by the car manufacturer.
Also take a look at i-Go software instead of TomTom. More maps available for East Europe and many nice features. Very fast on a TyTN! Can be installed from SD card.
Or look out for the SD version of TT5. It's always handy to be able to install a fresh version from the SD card after a PDA crash when there is no PC near. All other versions need Activesync to install, which you probably won't habe able to do on a holiday trip!

i installed TomTom Navigator 6.020 SD BENELUX V660.1219
the program works,
it only cant find my gps device :s
some help would be much appreciated
Have you considered searching for this one - I have answered the same question at least 3 times to date!
Other NMEA Device
Baud Rate 9600
Comm Port 4

I was having a problem with that also.
It didn't matter if I was in the middle of an empty field running around with the thing in the air like an idiot, the internal antenna was too weak.
Now if I was in the car, the thing would pick up a signal no problem.
After looking into alternatives - like an external antenna - I settled on this:
I just picked up a BT-359W Bluetooth GPS Receiver for 85- Euro new.
The only difference between the BT-359W & BT-359S is the design on the top.
I made sure the battery was 100% charged before I turned it on (old habits die hard) and after spending 5-10 minutes trying to configure the Bluetooth on the HTC P3300 - I am a newbie when it comes to this new technology - it was able to get 3 satellites while I was in the house right away.
The thing is very small also - 82 mm x 41 mm x 13.4 mm (Inches: 3.22" x 1.61" x 0.52").
I would have to say that this is a great alternative to a wired antenna.
Here is a review I read before making my final decision: GlobalSat BT-359 Bluetooth GPS receiver review

Looks like you have a lot of money to burn, or whats the point of having a P3300 (with a bult-in GPS receiver - SIRFIII BTW) and then buying a bluetooth external GPS (basically another SIRFIII) ? cos its external ?

You missed the point completely.
The internal antenna was too weak.
When I am in a car, I have no problems at all getting a satellite fix.
The reason I bought an external GPS receiver is because I am not in a car all the time when using the GPS.

That doesn't make sense at all, it should be the other way around. Inside a car the signal will allways be weaker than outside, because of the surrounding metal.

completely agree, what you're saying doesnt make sense unless you were in some very dense forest with all the trees in leaf, but you say you were in the middle of a field.
im about to install tomtom on my orbit so will see what its like as i used to use a bt gps reciever on my xda IIi
hello
i have installed tomtom ver 5
and i have to say that it works a treat..
it takes about a minute to register on the GPS but it does work well form inside the car aswell as outside the car.
The settings i use are
GPS Program Com 4
GpS Hardware Com 0
and keep the 3rd tab option checked ie pocket pc controlling access
On the GPS setting in tomtom select other NMEA device and choose Com 4
First time use will take about 5 mins so keep the phone still then after should take less than a minute.....
hope it helps
Tomtom not working
I have tried endlessly without success to get the tomtom on my orbit working. It keeps saying 'no gps device found'. When I select 'Other NMEA device' i dont see com port 4 as one of the options, i see com2 and serial (i think).
I thought maybe the software was not properly installed when i read about the com 4 thing and so uninstalled it. However I bought the phone (brand new) with the tomtom from ebay but now i cannot reload the tomtom as it keeps crashing during install.
Any ideas on what next I can do
have you changed the hardware port to com 4 first?
start>settings>connections>gps
then on first page GPS settings it asks what program port form the drop down list select com 4, that should then enable TomTOm GPS settings to display com 4.
remember once you have selected settings connect your phone to PC via actie sync and on
start>programs>quick gps
select menu and select update automatically when connected via active sync
this speeds up the process of finding the satelites and the data is usually valid for abut 3 days, so it does help to locate satelites quicker.
keep the phone still for about 5 mins and it should work..
thanks

PS i am using TomTom 5, but the procedure should be the same
hi,
Go to mininova.org and download Tomtom Navigator 6 of it. It might take a couple of days to download sometimes. After you download follow the instructions and it is all user friendly. If you want any help don't hesitate to get back to me. If you want a copy in a CD send me a SAE so that I can write it on a disc and send it to you
