Heres a little program I made which allows you to automatically create / update / delete appointments based on your anniversaries and birthdays set on your contacts, it uses its own group for the appointments "From Contact" so that it wont interfere with any other appointments you have, also the latest version has a function to view all your birthdays / anniversaries on one screen and sort by various things, you can get it here:
http://home.exetel.com.au/amurgshere/bdaytocalendar.phtml
Download link at bottom of page
The main reason I made it is because I didnt want to have to sync with Exchange and back again every time i add / change a birthdate / anniversary
NOTE: This program required the Microsoft .NET CF 3.5 to be installed on your device, so if you dont already have it you will need it, there is a link on the page to download it.
Let me know what you think, its my first attempt at a Windows Mobile device application, i have been using this app on my own HTC Touch HD for some time and it works really well.
Anyone find it useful, bugs? Requested Features?

first thank you for this program, now for me everyting is working just fine, the only thing i can think off is if you can make it where we can change the status to free because everything right now is set to busy.
Definitely, I didnt even think of that when I coded it, I will endeavour to get an update done today to fix this issue. Thanks for the input!
great program! was looking for something like this!
works good, no problems for me.
thank you!
Thanks aerodynamic.
And to maniatico:
A new version is up : Version 1.8
* Appointments are now created with a Free status instead of busy
* There was a problem before where editing the appointments manually would cause an error (end date must be after start date) this has been fixed, but may required you to Remove and then Update the appointments through the program rather than just updating.
Download from same location:
http://home.exetel.com.au/amurgshere/bdaytocalendar.phtml
Another new version is up, sorry for the successive updates but I wanted to fix and update a few things:
Version 1.9 - 16/09/2009
* Multi column sorting now supported in view (sorting by another column will not interfere with current sort order of items which are equal for that column)
* Option added to select status for birthdays and appointments
* Sometimes appointments would update when there was no need for them to be updated - fixed
* Bug where appointments could not be edited is now fixed for sure (please remove and update if you have this issue)
* Progress bar now shown when loading contacts for viewing of birthdays / anniversaries
Version history is now on website:
http://home.exetel.com.au/amurgshere/bdaytocalendar.phtml

I have noticed there seems to be a bug in the HTC Touch HD (or possibly in WM6) where sounds, and vibrations wont work for reminders on appointments that are set to All Day events, for this reason sounds and vibrations dont work for appointments created by my program on this phone with WM6
Other people have confirmed this problem here:
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsmobile/thread/4dbfcc1f-bfc2-4b01-9551-5496fa05be40
I am planning on putting an extra option under a new tab into the program which is called "Appointment Method", basically it will have two options, "All Day" and "Start of Day", all day will result in all day appointments (for those where the bug above dosnt affect them) and "Start of Day" will create the appointments at midnight and end at midnight on the same day (this way they show up at the start of the day only) which should allow the sounds and vibrations to work.
Actually I might add this option for both appointments without reminders and appointments with reminders.
New version is up, you can now control your birthdates and anniversary dates from within the program using the view function, also a few other features including one to get around the problem where all day appointments wont play a sound or vibrate (see previous post):
1.9.1 - 17/09/2009
* You can now view / edit contacts by clicking a selected item in the view birthdays / anniversaries
* Extra setting added for making appointments at start of day instead of all day for reminded / non reminded apointments
* Extra setting added "Show All Contacts in View" will show contacts without birthdays or anniversaries allowing to set them if needed (they always sort to the end except when sorting by name)
* Dirty checking is now performed on the settings so you only get asked to update contacts if you make a change to relevant settings

Hi,
Thanks a lot for this app. Very nice program, very useful and welldone.
I have two suggestions:
- Multi-language translation ( I can do the french one )
- Possibility to add birthday in your app. (I have full of contacts with one person birthdate, but I must remember wife, children,...), it would be a nice option.
I hope it"s not to diffucult.....

This can definitely be done, will have to localise all the strings, but there arent that many in it! I will look into it

Do you mean, the ability to add extra dates, then one birthday and one anniversary per contact? The way I normally handle this is to just create a contact with only a name and a birthdate.
However im not discounting this feature entirely, but this one is a pretty big one to implement, although definitely possible, its a little outside the scope of the applications functionality.
Maybe when I have all the other stuff done and added, like the multi language, i will look into this feature a little more.
Thankyou very much for your feedback
where should i add an anniversary reminder? 'cause i can figure out how can i use this app. when i press update, nothing happends. i have in contacts all reminders.

Yes, it's about that. I keep my contact database with persons who have a phone number. For the other ones, I don't create them in my contacts.
I would like to add them in your app, instead of creating a recurring appointement for each birthday or anniversary.

Im not sure what your saying here ady_uaic, but for the program to work you MUST have one or more contacts with their Birth dates / Anniversaries set, you must also check the settings of my application, and ensure that "Process Birthdays" and "Process Anniversaries" is checked, otherwise they wont be processed and therefor wont create any appointments.
Apart from that, thats all you need to know?

Ok, well this is something I will add later on, basically I will implement my own database, this is a large undertaking for a project that was meant to be small and simple, but im sure once I get these other things done i will be looking for more to implement.
Ok, new version is up:
1.9.5 - 18/09/2009
* Now support multi languages files with icons, read below
* Other minor enhacements
Basically, you need to put at least one file with the extension of .lang in the same folder as the executable on the device, you can also, optionally put another file with the same name but with an extension of .png which should be a 64 x 64 PNG image to be used as the languages icon
Download this file to see a demo of the .lang and .png file for French (NOTE: Not all the french words have been converted and I only used google so its probably not that accurate, words which have not been converted have an X in front of them).
Every 2 lines in the .lang file is a conversion, the first is the english version .. DO NOT CHANGE THIS, change the second line of each one ONLY, you can edit the .lang file in Notepad, just be sure to save it as a UTF-8 format NOT ANSI.
Download the demo french language files here:
http://home.exetel.com.au/amurgsher...&filename=FrenchLanguageForBDayToCalendar.zip
Heres how selection works, if you havnt set a language yet and more than 1 language is available (NOTE: English is always available, as it is built in) then when you load the program it will ask you for the language.
Once it asks you once it will never ask again, unless you click the LANG link in the top right corner of the main form, this will close the app and make it so that next time you launch the app you will be asked for language, but AGAIN this will only occur if you have more than 1 language option available (ie have at least 1 .lang file in the executable dir)
If you create any .lang and .png files, please kindly ZIP them up and email them to [email protected], I will them include them in the distribution CAB so that everyone has access to them.
The next thing to do is custom Birthdays / Anniversaries...
Cheers!
hey, one small problem for me:
program works fine, creates contacts. but in touchflo calender tab, i cant see these greyed out corners for days with a birthday.
tried to save the bithday appointments as all day as well as start from beginning of day.
when clicking on the date, i see the appointment in tf3d.
thanks in advance!
each contact in manilla's contact manager you have to manual link each account "associate with facebook" and it downloads there picture etc
we need a program that can just link all these for you with out going in each one is there anything around ??
Funny... did a quite similar request 23 mins before ^^
how does manilla associate contacts with facebook? where is it stored?
think it depend on which phone/rom you have as i have diamond 2 and dont have that prob.
i use energy 2.5 rom and it does that on my touch pro *fuze* which am happy about because about half my contacts are on my face book, lol
How can I get back to my original contact photo after integrating it with Facebook? I don't want Facebook's avatars.
It's stored in the contact notes. I'm not sure what version of manila you're using but in 2.5, go into the contact, then edit details, click on the picture and you can choose where it grabs it from.
I'm curious about this as well. a friend of my recently changed their phone number and they updated it on facebook, I found it that way... Curious if there was a way to bring more then just what it's gathering now. Sense 2.5 seems to bring in the photo, birthday, status, and album info. If it was just looking at fields in facebook it would just need to know to look at additional fields...

I found that after linking 1 contact I went through the buttons on the bottom. The contact button with the clock had the choice to link all with Facebook.
i go to 2nd contact tab. then click all people. then go to 4th tab. wait for a while. at the top part there.. it shud be showing 15 contact matched. and u can link all them at there.
but then, due to different last name / first name assign on ur phone n their facebook account, probably hardly got more than 20 facebook contact able to linked. i got myself 29 contacts only linked with my winmo by default match.
the rest i did it manually link n sync.
it remember ur link for latest manila 2.5 1921 version though. it saved the link and then u no nid to link another time even u flash / hardreset ur phone.
but for my xperia, rom isnt stable yet. sometimes it download contact display photo n sometimes it dun. but touch pro TAEL rom works great. it auto pull all the display photo for me.
once again, on 4th tab of 'HTC contact' application. u can see all facebook update.
in my HTC HD2 i have to update each contact photo and is very long to do....is there a way to update all contacts using a process like "bulk import" ?
thanks

I'm running stock Sprint 6.1. My question is, when I go to the Messages tab, click on the latest message, it shows all of my texts on top and the texts I received last. It's not true threaded sms. Am I missing something, or is clicking on "All Messages" and using the WinMo interface really the easiest way? I think TF3D is much better and more productive all around, except for this. It doesn't seem very thought through.

The Messages Tab does not support threaded messaging. It only supports a chronological order - but it only sorts messages starting with the newest message - from anybody.
When entering the WM interface in "All Messages", that's when threading is supported. By threading, it means when you click on the person, you see your whole "conversation"; not just you see all your messages in a chronological order.
Well, in other words, I don't know of any tweak to enable a chronological order in which the oldest message comes first in Manila. Nor do I know of any tweak to view conversations ("threads") in the Manila interface.
*Bolded: you can see messages you sent? I never got that on my old T-Mo stock ROM!

When I go to the Messages tab, it just shows the last received text. When I click on it, is where I see the "threaded" texts with mine above and received below. They're in chronological order, but separated by sent and received. I was looking to see if they can mix so they are all in chronological order.

Oh, well sorry for the confusion in my post!
I think the only thing the Messages Tab supports is Inbox messages in chronological order with latest first, oldest last.
However, I'll try to look for some fixes that might work for you.

You are experiencing some kind of bug. The TouchFlo threading is supposed to work just like the WM default threading. They are also both incredibly slow if you have more than 10 messages.
Interesting. Thanks for your time, sumflipnol.

The only layout I've ever seen on the Manila Messaging Tab (on every ROM I've used), is chronological Inbox messages with the most recent message first. I don't know how to set it to a different layout (outbox, conversation, most recent last) in the Tab.
On the tab it is chronological, but when you click one of the messages (anywhere on the text) you are taking into a manila style conversation view.
It IS a bug. Something jacked up since the new year!
Check the date on all your incoming messages.. mine show year 2016!
All sent messages get the correct date... so this is why they are cut in half (some on top, some on bottom).
WTF HTC?????????
Y210K bug get you?
My latest received message says 1/4/16, my reply, 1/4/10
Interesting enough, if I use windows mobile app, the date/threading works fine, so it is a problem with HTC.

yeah i guess thats why, Manila couldnt match the dates to view the conversation of the SMSes correctly.
and btw, there is a fix for the 2016 thingy, a cab, i saw it somewhere around ehre

I just have it disabled because I'm using an old version of the "Disable HTC Messaging Client" cab (I hate the Leo messaging, and this cab also disables all HTC Messaging), so that doesn't launch for me anymore!

Since Froyo came on Nexus everyone was saying that now you can finally sort contacts by last name. Where can I find that option on Desire since I haven't got any setting or options in "People" (contact) app.

It looks like unfortunately, not.
There is no option to sort by family name. Even in a cooked sense-froyo roms, if stock contacts-dialer app is inculded, the sorting by family name and search fuction are just not working.
In this moment I've few soultoin (but I'm not satisfied eider)
1. Use one of AOSP cooked rom (e.g Opendesire)
2. install 3td party apps, like BetterConttact (payd), DialerOne (free), beside the Peopple app. (This 3 app's are doing aas I want, but only separately, so somitemes I need to use one and other times other )
3. Change display name in People app one by one
Currently I'm on 2. but as I mentioned, I'm not really happy with that.
I have about 600+ contacts which are growing daily, doing number 3 is out of question.

I just measured that 23sec need to change one. So 600 contact changes takes less tha 4 hour. When I think about it, searching for solution have taken much more...
But agree, it's very booring task!
Are you syncing contacts with your gmail account?
If so this may be worth a try, assuming my memory isn't too addled.
When I first set up my phone I synced using active sync and my contacts where stored Surname, First Name. I later deleted my active sync connection and set up using the Gmail features and the contacts swapped to First Name, Surname.

I synced my contact to my google account since half year with my winmo as well, with no problem. In my contact list in the filed first name there is a first name, in the field last name there is a last name.... so everything is fine.
The only problem that HTC does not think that sorting by Family name is important... You know in some langueges (like mine) are sorted it this way.

As above. Can't because there is no demand, can it? One of the big let-downs for me coming from PalmOS and Agendus is the really week Calendar app. Let's not get into the bizarre two week limit on past events! I also miss the tweakability of ChatterEmail. But that was then ...
So why no PIM or email apps? Is it a programming issue? Is the WP market entertainment, not enterprise? Will it change with Apollo/WP8?
Just wondering.
PS: other than that I love WP7. Just hoping for more.
truthfully the built in is so good and i use exchange so i never really thought about it. I also have yet to see anyone but you so far ask for it, so i am not thinking the demand is there yet. I have see in the marketplace a few task and calendar apps though.

PIM was very useful on WM, I don't understand why there is no demand for it? I guess it is what it is, Don't want to even ask because I don't what to hear some [email protected]$$ fanboy comment about that feature is so 1999 or something.
The real reason is that everything is sandboxed.
You don't have direct access. You used to just import poutlook.dll Then you could send an email. It would go into the phone's outbox for the account you wanted to send with. It would get sent on the next sync.
Now, you will be asked if you want to send the mail.
Also, I don't think there is any way to programatically get at the content of your emails. This is actually a good security piece. Imagine a dev writing a pretty cool app. You use it. Only months later you find that the content of all email messages on your phone were being sent to the dev while you used the app through a http post.
This is the why. Now, Microsoft could provide controls that would access this information.
Back in Windows Mobile, I wrote an app for users of Sense that also used the Facebook tab that would go through all of your contacts that were linked to Facebook. It would let the user update the contact with the Facebook pic. It used poutlook.dll.

Built-in so good? I don't think so. Good as far as it goes maybe. I too use Exchange, that's the backend. It's the presentation of the PIM data that is so lacking.
Needs more views. Today summary. Ledger view for day. 5/7 day week view. A proper month view, with readable text and icons. Templates, filtering. Ability to duplicate events. Tasks in the tile. Lots of little things. When I think what could be packed into my little 320 X 320 Centro display ...
Have a look at the features in the iOS and Android versions of PocketInformant or Agendus.
While I'm at it, the email app needs customisable notifications per mailbox.

PIM is only needed for sms and history. Exchange or hotmail backs up the rest when you put contacts in unless you don't have a data plan. And if you want it all backed up... here yah go (only for stock roms)

Let me break this down for you...
Duplicate events... go to the event, scroll down, hit more details. press occurs, Choose once, everyday, every weekday, every saturday, every (Day number) of the month, ever month day (as in yearly)
For Tasks in the tile - while on agenda,
Week view? for someone that has a lot of appointments, weekview is never readable, same with month. At least in month you can tell there is an appointment and click on it.
For tasks tile that syncs with exchange try this one - http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/3455bef8-895d-49d6-9c71-131a8fd0106a
They do however show in agenda once you have opened the task
ROCOAFZ. Maybe you don't understand what I was trying to explain (BOTD). Also, please don't be so defensive, I'm not trying to diss WP. I'll be in for the long run. But if I see (IMO) a weakness I will point it out. And to me the functionality in the Calendar app is poor. Especially when other parts of the OS are so good.
Responding to your points ...
Firstly, forget about Exchange, etc. I'm not talking about backing up. I'm talking about the presentation and management of the data. I don't care where it's stored. Could be local, could be cloud - doesn't matter.
Secondly, when I use the term PIM, I mean it in the broadest possible way. I want to manage my personal info. Traditionally, on PDAs, that meant calendar, contacts and tasks. Smartphones have replaced PDAs, so now I want my current smartphone to do this at least as well.
Thirdly, the intent of the original post was to query why there are no 3rd-party PIM-type apps available for WP7. There are for iOS and Android, even BB. There were for WM6 and PalmOS. Why not WP7? A couple of replies confirmed what I suspected. The OS doesn't provide the access programmers need. Everything is very hands-off. Maybe this will change in future releases. there are indications that this may be so.
Finally, some specific comments -

No, I'm talking about duplicating existing appointments. Not recurring events, i.e., I had a meeting today at 2pm. We agree to meet again on Friday at 4pm. All other details the same. Previously I would quickly duplicate the event, update the date/time and I'm done. Now I must create from scratch. I right-click drag in Outlook, Google Calendar has Duplicate in More Actions - so it's not just me.

Week view? for someone that has a lot of appointments, weekview is never readable, same with month. At least in month you can tell there is an appointment and click on it.

My choice to decide, but at least give me the choice. In month view I want to see better indicators. Maybe the smallish Lumia 800 display is at fault, or my chosen theme, but I really have difficulty noticing the existing (pretend) indications and they give no indication of what's there (task, appointment, all-day event). There is plenty of room to show boxes and bars for an 'at a glance' overview of my time. Especially in landscape view. BTW, what happened Categories?

For tasks tile that syncs with exchange try this one - TaskTask

Thanks. That, and some others, look interesting. But comes back to the issue raised by others. The only way to get at the tasks data is to go direct to the server. Shouldn't have to do that. It does work though, but should be in sync with inbuilt, not duplicating functionality.

1st, not being defensive, just pointing out the way others like myself do it. What i say may or may not work for your situation but it's good to see another way to do it.
For contacts, calendar and tasks - without exchange - they are synced to the cloud hotmail. You don't need to back them up in that case. Last time i hard reset my phone, i didn't even restore via Zune. I put in my hotmail account. That brought in my local contacts and birthdays + vet appointments for my dog. i then synced facebook. That brought in all my friends. then exchange which brought my work contacts, email calendar, tasks ect. You have to get a windows live when you 1st bring up the phone. It is an automatic backup. Now what i did lose was my app list and saved games + contact history.
For apps go to https://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/my under get my apps and you will find a list of everything you purchased or got for free. you can send each app to your phone from there. So only thing is lost is contact history and saved games. Zune sync brings back pictures and music. I wanted to change what i had on my phone and didn't care to keep the exisint pics since they were on my pc anyway so i opted not to do this.
But if you want full local backup i highlighted a homebrew way to do it that doesn't require you to be unlocked.
Tasks - for your example, if you created the event, i normally would just edit it and change the date. Granted it's not copy but does the same functionality, unless you need a record of the event that passed.
I have a Titan so my display it pretty big. I probably could show a week view but on some weeks there are so many appointments that it would have to be bars. They should allow month view to zoom into calendar even if pinch to zoom to satisfy everyone.
Categories i didn't miss because i didn't use them but someone else asked me about them before purchasing a phone. That is when i noticed they were not there. Instead of categoris, i add to the subject.
example = Meeting with consumer - Billable
Instead of a billiable category which i can't do much with i add the text because outlook will allow me to search for it. at the end of the week when i bill out, i just enter in outlook's search (i do billing from pc) billable and it will show all my Billiable appointments in a list with time and date. it works way better that way for me. I haven't quite figured out what people use categories for yet though but i do know that they are not on the phone. Probably because each calendar has it's own color.
Thanks again. But, really, I have no issues with backing up, syncing, etc
Yes, I do keep old events. Which is why I can't believe you can only go back two weeks. Thank goodness for web access.
Second half of post is interesting. I may just have to change my habits. Certainly the idea of using different calendars for colour coding sounds good.

Hmm i never notice that. In the hotmail calendar it goes back further. I always thought it followed the email since i have it for a month but i never look back that far.
I didn't know if you knew this but if you change IE to Desktop version in settings you can do full outlook web access with all calendars including shared. (i know this works on 2010 exchange at least). One thing the iphone can't do as you are locked to mobile version and Outlook has no link to change out of it.
