Hi.
Can anyone recommend an application that will automatically switch the Touch HD to vibrate in sync with the appointments in your Calendar and then back to normal once the meeting has passed?
Or an application such as the Omnia has which mutes the phone when you place it face down on a desk.
Thanks
Nathan
yup..it's called PhoneAlarm...and it can do a lot more stuff too. It's one of my must have apps
Thanks, have you tried this on the HD?
I have another app which does what I want on my Trinity but it fails on the HD because once you turn on TF3D all other Today apps are unchecked.
I was hoping on a non-Today Screen app.

What are you guys talking about? HD does both things without any third party applications. Just choose Automatic profile.

I think is not the same. In automatic profile, the profile changes if you have meetings in calendar, am i right?
it dosesn't have the options to program different profiles for some days and hours...
correct me if i'm wrong and tell me how to do work with automatic
great 2009 for all
Thanks everyone. I will check these out.
I have tried the built in feature however this has one thing that i do not like which was different on the previous application that I used on my Trinity.
I only want my phone to be muted if I have accepted a meeting and not if I accepted as tentative. My job requires that I am aware of many meeting/events that I do not attend so I accept these as tentativly and I do not want my phone to mute during these tentativly accepted appointments.
Any reg tweak for this, or do any of the other apps suggested, allow for this?

Is this at all possible? I still want to have my contacts, etc updated but I feel the interface is somewhat primitive!
Replace with what?
An alternative ...
K9 Mail maybe or better ...
You can't "replace" it you just start using something else.
Are there even Amy advantages to using the gmail app?
Any suggestions on alternatives? K9 Any good?
Ah gmail will be the best gmail tool you will find on the android lol. You don't mean Email tool? Do you use Gmail??
Yeah I maent the GMail application (it refers to itself as "Google Mail"). I'll just have to bear with it then till they upgrade it . I am though over the moon with the device the text input ROCKS! I do have a list of applications I need suggestions on though ... I'm used to the following on Windows Phoen so I need an Android variation ...
G-Alarm - A Comprehensive alarm application
G-Profile - easily change my profiles from night, work, home, etc, this would be great as a widget
Task Facade - A general task manager that will show all my running applications and let me close/switch
Wake On Text/Email/etc - As it says ... and stay awake until message has been read!
Lock Without using Power button - easy ...
That's about it for now

I know what you mean about the GMail app, if it's the same as in Android 1.6.. Ugly, flat and boring interface. Some customisation or nice animation wouldn't go amiss. I think the problem is that the Android team at Google don't really view the product UI as a whole, but instead as a load of separate modules that they can just chuck together. No time to make the GMail app look nicer for 2.1? No worries, just stick it out as it is. Media player still the worst/most basic there is? We'll worry about it another time, just stick it in, as is.
Depending on what you've come from, Android can seem amazing, or quite basic in it's vanilla form. I realise the intention is for manufacturers to add their own custom touches to the OS, like HTC have with Sense, and Motorola have with MOTOBlur. But really I think Google should be applying a bit more spit and polish to it's own core apps - the ones that come installed on all/most Android phones, and won't be messed with by handset manufacturers.
By this I mean GMail, Maps, Market, Browser, Gallery etc. Some of these are pretty good efforts (Browser), while others leave a lot to be desired compared to those found on other types of (non-Android) handsets.
I realise that they have to code for the lowest common denominator (low-end handsets) and not every handset can have a 1ghz Snapdragon in it, but I also feel that they are failing Android a little bit, by not ensuring the the latest hardware is taken advantage of in it's latest OS.
How hard would it be to tart up the GMail interface a little bit, while still keeping the same functionality? Not hard.
I know Android is about power and flexibility - don't like the Google way, then design or just install some other developers app instead. And that's great, but I really think there's something to be said for making sure your core experience is great, not just ok.
Disclaimer: I am basing this opinion on my experiences of Android 1.1, 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 (2.0 admittedly is limited, since I do not own my own phone with Eclair yet, just flashed custom ROMs).
Feel free to flame away - I may flame myself when my Desire turns up by 1pm today, and I realise I'm tallking a load of BS when I'm presented the all singing, all dancing, beautifully animated new 2.1 apps from Google! But I doubt it...
BTW, don't get me wrong - I love Android, and I would not consider buying any other type of phone!
Why use the gmail application? I'm using the native email application and it works fine with gmail, lets me move all my mail to archive etc, receives it when its received (through push i think) and there is no reason why i would wantto use the local gmail application. In fact. It hasnt even been loaded up. lol
So I don't actually "have" to use th GMail application? I can just add the GMail account on Exchange/ActiveSync on the mail application? Sounds like a good idea! What are the disadvantages?
Any advice on the other applications I wanted?

Go in the Gmail application, settings, disable notifications.
You've pretty much turned off the Gmail Applcation then. Start using the other mail application or download one off the marketl.
I will give you some suggestions for your apps when I have time.

THANKS! I was kind of pissed when I notced you couldn't send bbc emails with GMail app ... madness ...
Is there a way to have a Gmail, Google Apps and Exchange all on the same device? Also does the mail app use IMAP idle I don't want to drain the battery by checking mail every minute ...
What uses more battery, gmail app or using HTC Mail to check for messages every half an hour?
Likely mail as GMail is push.

My bad ...
Still, I have a list of applications that I need asap .
So far, I've not found anything that even comes close to Galarm in terms of quality. I'm using Gentle Alarm though, which is really good compared to most other alarm apps for android.
Check out a program called Locale. That's meant to be really good for profiles and even does it location based
EDIT: Don't use a task manager, it's not good for your phone! There's an article that was posted up on here about the way android works, you don't need to kill tasks and reboot, etc. like you did with WinMo.

Fair does but how do I see the apps running in the background or what's an easy way to switch between apps?
I've heard of this "locale" before, seems to be very popular!
hold the Home button and it brings up a little task switcher, similar to Alt+Tab on a PC
Thank you! Goodbye, Advanced Task Killer!
Im thinking about moving from WinMo to Android. If you could help me with few questions...
I dont use any Google services, no gmail as I rather use myowndomain.com... I want to sync with Outlook via usb (bluetooth, yeah maybe but usb would be better); contacts, calendar and tasks... Is there good sync software out there?
The main reason for me to have a smartphone for a cell phone, is so I dont need always have a laptop with me. This brings me to opening and editing office apps; I found "Documents to Go" that seems to be OK, anyone using it?
To me its also important to automatically sync folders while syncing with Outlook, any good programs for that? Ive been using MobSync with WinMo and I guess it could work with this too? I found also Microsoft SyncToy, never tried it though...
Can I get my tasks listed on Android today screen like on WinMo? I need to have be reminded of my tasks, otherwise I would spend ½ of my day reading at XDA and not doing any of the things Im supposed to do...
Any comments and help is appreciated... Thanks!

Hi there!
Did you already buy a Desire? I've used winmob before and you sound like you're totally schooled at Outlook with usb sync. HTC has exchange service support and you can sync through usb, It was long time ago since I ever used active sync but a friend of mine use it on Desire and he was not satisfied.
There is calendarpad that can show on start screen as activities or regular day view. Editing documents are thought to be done through Google docs as it is thought to be faster than a full scale office program on the phone. You can other wise get quick office premium for editing offline.

1)is the delay in the ringing for incoming calls like there is with earlier htc phones(such as my touch hd)
2)to move music/videos etc from pc to phone is it still as simple as draging and dropping?
3)where can you get paid/free apps such as copilot etc?
4)does the desire still have widows programs such as word, rss hub etc?

The Android Market application on the phone - at the very least you'll see free apps, but visibility of paid apps depends on whether or not they are available in your region.

The Desire is not a Windows phone, and does not run any windows mobile applications. However, there are normally analogous Android apps to perform most tasks you require - for example, if you want to read/write MS Office files, there is DocumentsToGo and other similar applications.

when i call my touch hd from another phone there is a big delay in actual ring time.
so the caller would here the phone ringing a few seconds before the htc would actually start ringing ( this is just with personalised ringtones / mp3s etc)

does it have somekind of rss hub where i can download podcasts like the best of the chris moyles show etc?
1. I havent noticed any delay on my custom ringtones so I assume there is no such bug on the Desire..
2. Foxmeister exactly answered your second question.
3. Depending on where you live you may or may not see any of the paid apps offered on the market. But rest assured that the full version of Copilot cannot be obtained for free from the Android Market.. as for other means of obtaining it.. i would refer from talking about it here...
4. There is an app which came pre-loaded on my Desire which could open Word, Excel and PDF files called Quickoffice. You cannot edit the documents with it though.. Thats why I've got OfficeSuite and I can do whatever I please with the documents.
it seems like this phone has got alot more complicated to use compared to the touch HD and the iphone.
for example. to put themes on the touch hd it was just a case of downloading a .cab and clicking install. from what ive read so far it seems much more complicated on the desire.
also for downloading/listening to podcasts you could just use rss hub, i havnt been able to find similar for the desire
Having never used RSS Hub, I couldn't say, but there are plenty of RSS readers for Android. A quick google returned this one, which seems to do what you want. Given the age of the review, I guess there are many more by now.
Regards,
Dave
Short list for now, but people should add... Maybe give the devs some ideas of stuff to make and submit.
1. Comm Manager - I hate having to goto 5 spots to turn stuff off and on when i dont need it. (3g while at home with my wi-fi, no thanks)
2. Ring Profile - Like NightMode or WorkMode... nice and quick to swap out Tones and Volume levels.
If there is any dev that would like to pick my brain on features and stuff, feel free to PM me.
Everyone else submit your thoughts and ideas...
I would lik an easy to use SMS backup, or record to calendar utility.
I could definitely use a tile that toggles the data connection ON and OFF with a single click. The same goes for the WiFi connection.
Yes - +1 for a live tile to toggle wifi on/off
Also, some kind of 'handsfree' app that will set the phone to auto answer calls and turn on speaker phone (for use in car etc)
SSH client...
Wish List for Apps
1. WP7 Taks List that syncs with Outlook Task
2. File Explorer app that allows me to manual copy files into WP7 or out from WP7, nevermind if it's a separate storage aread away for the system stuff, i just need to use some of the 16GB hanging on the phone that I can use easily...
3. Any App that allows me to read right managed emails...
1. tcpmp player and the ability to add .avi files so I don't have to convert them. (if there is a way to play them without converting please let me know, I download a lot of tv shows through graboid and like to watch them on my phone.
2. psx emulator with bt syncing capability to either a wii remote or ps3 remote.
3. phone number blocking program
Multimessenger (ICQ, JABBER, Live!)
I would like a call manager program like Magicall for WM6. It filters phone calls and SMS's through a user-defined rule set. Not sure if WP7 is even capable of this yet, given the multitasking setup it currently has.

Well I hate the fact that the new Email-Apk let you just sync back 1 month. So I modded it to 100 days. Maybe I could improve it even more but first I want to mod some other Apps (especially System-Apps) which annoy me.
Feel free to post your wishes and I'll look what I can do for you (and me of course )
I have a list of things that annoy me and I'll try to change them.
Email.apk: Sync (at least 3 months)
Browser.apk: at least the useragent feature
Camera.apk: Mute the sounds. (I think someone already did that). Some other options like no ISO or so.
FmRadio: To listen to the radio without a headphone (I know the headphones are the antenna but maybe it goes anyway if you're outside and have a good reception.
MusicPlayer: hmmm
SamsungWidget_News: Other languages
TouchWiz30Launcher: .....
Note: You need ROOT to install Systemapps (well not install but copy them into /system/app or push it with adb)
I have the problem, that the vibration notification is very short. When I have it in my pocket I don't realize that a mail is coming. The gmail app has a much longer vibration notification. Is this possible to change?
Thanks!!!
Do you think it's possible to mod the stock Samsung email.apk to use a client certificate (personal certificate in .pfx or .p12 -format)?
I need this for my work email but I like the stock Samsung email client, so I rather not install any third party client.
Also disabling Exchange policy enforcement would be nice.

I tried a few keyboards and found this problem. I saw on one of the vendors forums that he was looking into this. He found that Samsung used something non standard which caused the issue. I recall a beta from the vendor showing progress as the dictionary worked, but things like auto full stop still didn't. Sorry, can't recall the products name right now that showed the progress on the problem.

Request items for email.apk if possible, I'm sure there are many folks out there that would love the enhancement.
1 include bypassed exchange policy.
2 mod to allow multiple select and deletion upon search items.
Not sure if these are possible, as I haven't seen too many enhancement base off stock apps.
