Best free anti-theft software? - Touch HD Themes and Apps

Which is the best free anti-theft GPS software?? (I mean those softwares that upon sms request send you the location of your phone via sms or e-mail)

I'd be interested in that too. I didn't realize you could do that.

Mobile Justice ? or NueGPS or SmartProtect

Thanks for the tips. I'll check them out. If you think of any others, please let us know.
Also, if someone has any experience using these, please share how well they work.

or how about paying just a few $ to protect your expensive phone???

you can also try remote tracker: http://remotetracker.sourceforge.net/.
Not fully tested yet, but seems to work l my HD.

is there any software that makes it possible to do these things via IM/e-mail/internet instead of sms??

The fundamental problem with all these though is that if the theif is reasonably up to speed with what they are nicking, none of them will survive a hard reset / clear all

You can integrate remote tracker in your custom rom, but if the thieve flashes a new rom, you're doomed.

sprite terminator works pretty good and kaspersky antivirus delivers an anti-theft protection too!

Kaspersky has theft prevention but it eats your battery power. Had to uninstall since that battery lasts a lot longer

nueGPS works great for me, just write down the fix pos in google earth and you get the location for the "drive by"

I hope that will not work on my xperia too
if norton is so bad what do you suggest me to use as antivirus/firewall for my blackstone?
You don't need an antivirus or a firewall for your blackstone.
antivirus not needed if the user knows what he is doing.... the problem is not really the device but the user....

i was one (if not the only) idiot who bought this program for my touch hd. what a pos program it is. does not work at all.
after downloading and installing it, i viewed the read me file that came with it and all of the problems and bugs that are present were outlined in this file, after i purchased the program. norton should really f'n wake up and inform its customers of these problems beforehand.
needless to say, i uninstalled it from my phone. however i still have the empty norton security folder in my programs list which i can't seem to delete.

I've been on Windows Mobile for almost 5 years now with WiFi, never used anti-virus/firewall and never had any problems :S
Honestly guys, just get your money back.
Norton security is well known for overpriced, buggy, memory hogging, bloated and generally crap software on fully specced PC's so I shudder to think what it would do to your Touch HD!

Any one installed antitheft software in your phone

So...... Why not Lookout??
Just don't feel conformat to have an account to a website and control a phone through others.
I have just learned that it is antitheft software. Has anyone installed antitheft software in there HD?
I would be interrested in an antitheft software too, but something that works even if the thief changes the SIM card
Lookout
I've personally used Lookout since it was still the Flexilis Mobile security beta.
I would certainly recommend it to you. I recommend it to everyone else.
It has free antivirus updates,
Free Data Backup
Free Antitheft - Scream-Locate-Nuke
If you're worried about your information, i wouldn't. You use MyPhone and Hotmail, ebay, paypal etc? Same difference.
You get a weekly email from them to tell you your check-in was done on time for backup and virus scan too.
It's brilliant. Best of all, it's free!
i have been using LOOKOUT/Flexilis ,for quite a while (+- a year , in fact )
overall, i am quite happy with it..!
..just the /missing/antitheft/find phone bit...
tested this function a few times ..it cannot pinpoint your phone,
i found it to be out, by anything between 1500 metre(1.5kilometre's) to 3,000 metre's ( 3 kilometre's ).
..( which does not help me much ,to find my phone..?)
reason ,i used LOOKOUT , is not for above funtion ,but for its anti virus capabilities..!!
overall good software.
Have a look at Remote Tracker ... have found no better to date.

I installed Smartphone Tracker: http: // smartphonetracker.blogspot.com/

virus and spyware

I've been trawling through XDA now for some 5 years without any kind of problem.
In the past 5 days my computer has been hit twice with XP SECURITY 2011 Spyware for which I had to wipe my drive and re-install a backup(thank you Acronis )
I' ve also been hit FIVE times with "defender.exe" some kind of Trojan, which my anti-virus TREND dealt with.
Now,I did not click on anything like an advert ,they just appeared and took over ...
Just thought I would report this in case anything can be done about it and to warn others .

This doesn't sound like an XDA issue, unless you are downloading files directly from the site (which you didn't mention.)
If your on firefox you can download an addon to block ads and also when I got the rogue anti virus thing I went into safe mode and malwarebytes ate it so you don't have to resort to that option to get that virus off.

Are you 100% certain that you are fully patched, and not getting this from any other site?
I browse XDA on windows and linux. No attacks here. If any exe was attempting to load, linux would prompt a file download window...
Can you locate the file perhaps in connection or firewall logs?
Also, IE 8 isn't renowned for its high security. Might I suggest Chrome, as its sandboxing is pretty impressive.
If it (The problem) was on XDA, I am sure more people would have seen it, and it would be sorted by now...

Hi,
when the attacks occured,I was only browsing these pages.
My anti-virus caught five files which it called "TROJ_FAKEAV.SM10"
As for the spyware,I have no record because I had to wipe my system. It called itself "XP SECURITY 2011".That's the only information I could get ,because it locked me out of my system.
I was not trying to cause trouble by bringing this to people's attention. It was more of a warning, and to see if other people had suffered anything similar.
As for my own security,I bought Webroot Spy Sweeper, and I might just try Google Chrome(thanks for the tip )

This has nothing to do with the XDA site. Switch to Google Chrome (amazing security and fast browsing), or Firefox. Google Chrome has EXTENSIONS that you can install for these certain things.
This can't be an XDA problem. Most likely, it is a IE8 problem and all the **** that comes with it. Switch browsers and then uninstall IE8.
WARNING: * Google Chrome is heavily dependent on IE settings. *
XP Security 2011 is just coming back on its on!!!
Like everyone else says, it's not XDA giving you this issue. The problem is, and will continue to be, you are running an already infected system. Wiping the system clean should get rid of it, but once you restore a backup from Acronis, you are more than likely restoring the infection! The best way to get rid of XP Security 2011 is to run Malwarebytes Antimalware in safe mode. Also run CCleaner while still in safe mode to remove all temporary internet files and TEMP files (which is where a lot of these types of spyware normally hang out). Then once its gone go back to normal mode and download a copy of SUPERAntiSpyware and allow it to give you real-time protection. The problem with XP Security 2011 (and it's previous annual variants) is that it is very resilient (upon reboots, it reinstalls itself if the entire infection is not removed). If all else fails, pay a pro to get rid of the actual infection, install some better protection than Webroot (which thoroughly sucks) and you should be good.

It should, but having a good (real-time) anti-spyware solution (like MS Security Essentials, AVG, SUPERAntispyware, SpyBot S&D or Malwarebytes) is the best way to HELP prevent spyware infections like that. Also keep a good Antivirus software up to date too (like Norton 360, AVG, Avast, Nod32, Kaspersky or MS Security Essentials). But nowadays over 90% of infections are spyware not viruses!

Hi,
Thanks for the advice.
Can I please ask what is your experience of the programs you mention, and on what basis you are making these suggestions.
I did some research on anti-spyware and webroot came highly recommended. What makes you say that it sucks?
Also I have installed Chrome and Firefox and am alternating between the two. Having said that Webroot has just quarantined a file called "keyloggr for chrome"
Having no luck recently...

Be sure not to install any extensions that aren't highly popular and have a bad review. Also, Webroot isn't exactly accurate and real time, I wouldn't use it.

[Q] Virus for Android phones, what do you think ?

I read on the web that virus for android exist. Is it really dangerous ? What do they do on the phone ? What can I do to protect my phone ?
Thanks
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
well, they do exist...i remember some article at androidpolice.com which said google had to remove like 50 apps from the market because they had malware in them...
i use lookout mobile security on my phone to avoid any damage...its free on the market and has some usefull features beside the malware scanner
AFAIK and remember, they are like keyloggers, and sending security sensitve data, like passwords, settings etc. to not wanted people. (read it in the same article about those malware programs removed).
I say, as long as you download trusted programs, there should be no problem.
i think it is not right
If they're gonna make viruses, they might as well make them for Apple's overpriced iPhones. Not that HTC's or Droids are cheap, but at least the source code is free, collaborative and transparent. Best of all, Android takes to heart the concept of consumer choice.
For me, I make sure that Lookout is updated, and apps I download have at least 5,000 downloads and 500 or preferably more ratings, that way I can at least be assured to a certain degree that the app's legit.
Its a pain but very unlikely that you will get them anyway. You have to be stupid to get them. I personally don't run security apps because there is no point.

exactly,,
be responsible on things you put on your phone...
You don't need an AV. What it could protect you from though are data mining apps. Some AV's have tools to check what permissions apps have. It's important to check what permissions an app requires. I've never bothered to check this before, until one time I checked my mobile bill and found that I have been charged for international texts I have never sent. Turns out an app was the culprit. It's important for privacy too. Some time ago there were lots of apps uploaded to the market that all turned out to be malware. It collected all sorts of information from its users like IMEI, etc. Also some AV's have anti theft features.
Anyway, personally I don't use an AV. Like Ronnie said probably the best AV you can have is yourself, so be responsible.
With regard to your question, if you're still interested on an anti virus the only advice I can give is to stay away from AVG. It's the most useless of the lot. Check out Avast or Lookout.

One tip : DO NOT use Antivirus software on your android it slows your phone pretty much. When i bought my first phone i saw those cool antivirus apps on market and i gave em a try.But i found out that my phone was lagging so i did some research and found out that the antivirus was the one to blame..and as my friend ronnie said you are the one who should be aware of what sites he visits or what he downloads..

Dude, virus dont exist only in .exe format. there are virus for an Linux OS also.
yup...thats true. but there aren't any destructive virus for android nor linux at this moment. the worst case, it stole our credential data or send many ads. thats no problem for me since I don't have any "credential" thing on my device. furthermore, even if my device got infected, uninstalling them or wipe /data will solve those problem.
Common Sense is the best Anti-virus!
There are malware detection apps like BitDefender Mobile, Kaspersky etc. you can find them on market

theoretically yes. practically no. virus not (yet) problem for unix (like) system like android. but other type malware did. and the best malware protection is yourself. my tips are :
1. always install app from market/play. google already scan every app on market using malware scanner.
2. always read app permission. if something not right, like a game that need read your contact or send sms, better avoid.
3. look developer's reputation and user reviews.

the best antivirus is common sense. dont install strange programs that have bad reviews or are unknown
