Password-protected folders - Touch HD Themes and Apps

Ive searched hi and low, and cant seem to find a simple program to store private documents (pics, texts, vids etc) in a password protected folder, on my N95 you could simply add a password to the zip archives but cant do this on the touch hd!
Every program ive found either costs £30+ or just isnt user-friendly, any advice or could someone point me in the right directon!!
Thanx in advance!

FreeOTFE4PDA
Free disk encryption software for PCs and PDAs

yeah ive got that one but found it difficult to import and export files to/from my memory card. lol to be honest, right after i posted this thread, like a mug i realised that winzip on the touch hd does actually allow you to add passwords. although that does mean u might be waiting for a while for a file to extract, obviously with respect to its size! oh well

Not Funny FTP Site has been trashed

Funny HA, HA
The FTP SIte has been trashed.
Both Kitchens are gone
The Extended rom folders is gone
And a load of other folders to.
Well that was 2 months of hard work up the swany
Funny HA, HA NOT!

Who would do something like that...this is rediculous...!
I think it is time the ftp gets locked....but then again, I am not in charge.
Another idea I had was to CHMOD directories...posted that in another post. Best way really is to not allow anyone access to ftp, and post the links to the files in a thead here on the forum.
I am really disappointed...I do have several ROMs downloaded, so let me know if I can help ya, MDAIIIuser.
Well I have pm peter in the hope that there is a backup.
Well that is what I did, posted every file in wiki, applicatins, ext roms, kitchen files, the lot, All gone.
Surely it is backed up and just needs restoring. Some may be missing but most would be there
I will help you rebuild it...if you want.
This is not normal...crap...I just had a look, and indeed...a ****load of stuff is gone.
Have Peter check the FTP logs...we might be able to trace this back by IP to the guilty party.
Well can you PM him with that Idea, dont think he will wont to read a 2nd Pm from me.
I am uploading what i can into a folder. it will need sorting out not a huge amount of stuff but all i can help with. I think somebody did a move rather than a copy in windows. can it not be set to read and write only and not change
I have downloaded the ext. Roms of all german Providers. If theres no backup, tell me, and I will upload them.
I have sent out to PM to the admins, lets wait untill we get somefeed back before we start uploding to much.
Somebody will have to create the Dirs so that the wiki links work again and I am realy not up to it any more, its been to much work that I have just seen go down the tube, to much work that I have done alone.
I leave this up to the admins and the GREAT HELPFUL XDA-Forum users.
kitchen 1-22
I can restore 1-22 for you if you like.
Have most files here.
This is not funny.
The folders should be read only.
What i had from kitchen 1-22 is back now
kpn files are missing also.
I have put as much to the site as I have......reckon it maybe safer to make read only and have a moderator(s) who can upload????
I added bleuttoh cabs, and Varous cab upgrades and progs...

I had some ROM can be unload let me know which good time to do
Can we set up some of system which file allow new user to download and some of file allow more poster to download file,I saw some of web site in Taiwan or China had this kinds system,if post one get one piont ,upload get 5 piont or 10 piont , set up some of file only allow some piont can be download that maybe will take care this problem or just use PM to ask to link download.
hi
totally disagree with with mwang..
i hate that system and think its not suitable for this great sites users..
what we all can be is a bit more responsible as far as the ftp is concerned..with making the files read only so that no one but moderators can change the file structure.. or something.. maybe a moderated seperate upload download areas can help further
just my 2 cents
I totally agree with zohaer21 about the files. They should be a read only type of file. I hate to see these kind of things happen, but there are just some people who get off on screwing things up.

Hi
Sorry to hear about the FTP site. I use mirrordir on my sites to push changes to a closed FTP box daily in the small hours off a cron job. Its pretty configurable and only sends changed files etc. I do it to avoid saturating my ADSL link - upload jpgs into ISP webspace daily, and have site link to them instead of local copies.
For backup/anti-tosser purposes, you prob dont need this - why dont you just write a simple script to copy the ftp site outside the ftp/http root once a day? Least then you can just copy it back in afterwards. All depends on available space, I know.
Nigel
Writing a new script for this is not needed. There are tons of scripts/proggies out there that can do this, no reinventing the wheel...
But I think the idea is excellent...keep originals on ftp, and update whenever needed to http location/folders.
So, We mirror this site to one of our own privat sites?
Sure it works but we all move on, get new toys and show no intrest. Who is going to do the admin on that.
Well my status is that I have two PM to two Admins that reamin in my outbox.
I am posting to a forum that is moderated but no admin has seen this thread.
I am truely gratful to the upload of the 1.22 kitchen, *vastloper*, thanks
Wiki needs to following folders
ftp://xda:[email protected]/BlueAngel/Extended_Roms
ftp://xda:[email protected]/BlueAngel/Extended_ROM_Kitchen_1_3X
Sure we need a few of the others but those were linked in wiki.
The problem is that if we reupload all this stuff who is going to clean it up?
The wiki team has been writing in wiki for over 2 months and I (MDAIIUser) have only ever seen 2 other contributions by none team members to that site in all that time. (bar the correcection of my bad spelling which still can be seen all over the place).
Ever wondered why we have so many threads on BT, and no links in wiki for that?
Sure this is a great site if you are looking for something but it is only as good as the amount of work that goes into it by us all. The tools are there, the info is also in the forum, but it cant be upto a team of 3 to post all of it, clean up the ftp site and act as admins with NO rights to insure that the work that has been done does not get trashed by some %&/ (*hdbueller* Great comment, got your device to work again?).
Sorry, my thoughts,

Virus on FTP server

Virus
I found a virus on the ftp site while looking for rom editing tools.
I don't remember exactly which folder/directory I downloaded it from but it was xdrit.exe or xdarit.exe. Search your harddrive and delete if you recently downloaded rom editing tools.
This virus is launched by clicking the .exe file, after executing the virus loads a sound file that plays a stupid laugh in mediaplayer, it copies 2 files into your startup folder, prompts you with a text telling you that you have been infected and to reboot to save yourself or some b.s. like that, so when you reboot it executes itself from your windows startup folder.
Check your startup folder and delete! if you get it.
It did delete my ntldr. and a couple of other files, had to do a repair with my windows cd.
Antivirus did not detect it! It looks to be a simple script from some moron script kitty!
Anyway I am up and running again with no loss to speak of but a little time.
Found the text file, this is the message in it:
Hello! upon reading this message your computer is starting to shutdown
Your Data Link Library is going to destroy, all your files say goddbye...
Did you know that some programs are cute and stealth like this, amazing isn't it...
ARE YOU READY TO THIS DISASTER!!!
Very Important Reason Unless Shutdown
Hi,
I can't find a file on our ftp with a name that looks like what you specified.
If someone knows the exact name or finds the file please let me or a moderator know and we'll remove it.
Greetz,
Flar
I just assume everything on the FTP site is suspect now. There have been too many virus attacks lately, especially after last weeks slashdotting over the iPhone skin. Most are just malicious scripts that your virus scanner will ignore.
Hi guys thought I'd post this warning maybe one of you can delete the file.
I downloaded and run it, it deleted my boot information, replaced windows files and deleted most exe files.
Unfortunately I cannot access the ftp server at the moment, but it was an installer for windows live for pocketpc.
Hope no one else has this problem...
SAME HERE!!!!!
/Uploads/Temp/Install_WLM.exe is a virus.... Thank god it happened to me at work and I could take a new pc from shelf, but seriously GET RID of that file!
Thanks for the warning and sorry that it happened to you.
As stated the FTP uploads is open and anybody can put anything on it, we seem to have a few board people around that think they are clever.
I have had a look for something that reads like what you posted but had no luck. So based on that I need bit more help to find and delete that file.
Ok its gone. Thanks for the file name, you managed to post before me.
Thanks, I just hope the other Install WLM exe's are clean, I've seen a few around on the FTP.
As long as no one has to go through what I did!
do you know what the filesize was? maybe we can compare to the others and find the malicious ones...
Afraid not, maybe MDAIIIUser knows, if he deleted the one in the temp dir?
Saying that, I know the cab of WLM is good, so if you really wanted to, you could get rid of all the Install WML .exe's? Better safe than sorry...
virus
it's also hidden as 'Limewire Pro real' or something similar, almost got caught out!
merged 2 threads
Hi Guys,
there was also a virus thread in the BA section, i merged it with this one to get a better overview.
Greetz,
Flar
i had deleted the limewire one the other day off the FTP... it was one of those files that just didnt belong...
Virus Heaven
I too made the mistake of downloading a damn Virus form the FTP Site yesterday!
Worse thing was.. I was the one who posted the CLEAN version of the install_WLM.exe file!
So.. I decided to repost my threaded apps to my own website. www.web4malta.com/xda-developers/windowslive-ppc2005_arm.rar
Sorry guys but the FTP free-for-all access has to stop!
I dont know what hosting you guys have, however.. I would like to make a suggestion!
CHANGE THE DAMN UPLOAD LOGIN AND PASSWORD..............
Make a thread... FTP uploads...
Get people to post stuff onto there...
every day or so let an admin (or designate a few volunteers!) to move stuff from the attachments folder to the correct place on the FTP site.
or JUST LEAVE THE DAMN STUFF ATTACHED!
We will then know who is posting crap!
The Rom "guru's" should all have a more "higher" level of FTP anyhows.. Mamiach, Xplode, Logout ETC...
They can post stuff onto their bit of the FTP if needed...
Xda developers is becoming a place that is know for Trashed FTP sites, and Virus's in every second download... Something really needs to be done!
And I KNOW this post is harsh... But hey.. we all appreciate that none of get paid for doing what we do with PPC's and we all have Real Jobs... However.. It just infuriates me that someone has found a way to (insert 4 letter word beginning with F here)-up the FTP site OVER AND OVER again!
I just go through now and delete stuff off it, If i know its a virus.. or rename it to THIS-IS-A-VIRUS.exe The problem is the "free for all" uploading scheme,... Nice in an ideal world..Stoopid in this one!
Juggs.
i agree we need to look a this issue urgently....this has to stop.
Some stalkers wants to makes us down!!!
i lost all my files, i've downloaded a file from ftp site and i dont know what happens next. i think what can we do about it? can we possibly change the rules in xda-developers? Thanks to all of the software developers here by the way.
And another one bites the dust!

I have been inundated with Emails from people....
Another person just posted that they lost their machine due to infected files yesterday!
Admins. I Implore you do do something about this... Just shut the Uploads section off.. change the passwords.. move everything into a subfolder and post a great big README.txt file in the FTP root!
There must be something you can do before more people lose their PC's !
Theres not much of a way to keep the FTP site open access and stop bad people. I guess the best way would be to have each user account used for FTP access also, with guest users not being able to upload.
A more complex system might be to somehow acquire virtual machine software and an old pc, having someone run each new exe thats added to the FTP site and checking for any malicious activity, classifying it as virus or not. Since most of these viruses are little scripts that some F*** comes up with, I believe most of the antivirus software doesnt pick it up (avast sure didnt!).
Then you could have the fun of creating a database with file info and banning every new user who attempts to upload a virus.
Anyone with me for an over complicated solution?!

We have 2 threads on this subject, a wiki page explaining what is open and what is shut.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_FTP_Site
Common sense tells everybody that they need to be careful with what they execute if they have downloaded it form the internet. and and and.
At the moment we have 2 choices, have a ftp or not have a ftp.
Sure we could have a login system,
we could have a person that verifies the files,
we could have a change control process.
Fact is this is not a commercial site in as a few if any of us get paid for being here or typing what ever you are reading now.
So as you see we are bound, bound by donations, bound by infrastructure needs, bound by support requirements that can't be met.
Now if anybody wants to commit to being a FTP admin, to being on line at least 2 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year (like or users) to verifying that every file is what it says it is, works and has a readme.txt added to (as requested), I will be MORE than happy to give them the FTP password. Oh did I mention that you have to do this for free ???.
If this is not the case then we all have to wait until the donation system and the advertisements generate enough revenue for hire that person and buy the needed software.
With that though in mind.... (donations)
i volunteer to sort help man/mod/whatever u need me to do with the ftp (or anything else for that matter, I've just finished my exams so i have free time again

NEED HELP!!!

Hi guys. I have found an Messages application for lokalisten.de communitystuff..
I dont trust this app.
Can anyone check this cab for some password-pishing-**** or stuff like the that.
It works but i dont wanna put in my real account password.
Maybe its the wrong forum. Sorry for that..
Please put better titles, not things like: NEED HELP!, Problem!...
Back to thread
I suggest you to use a emulator to test this application
sorry. i tried on my phone already. and it still works.. but anybody told me it can be a bad software too.. i dont know how to figure this out.. Can you ceck it about a bad source code? the developer of this app means this app is an api coded cab.. just recieve and answering messages at the easiest way..
can this application send some another information to ?? anywhere? or pishing passwords?
No, this things are near impossible
It's all ok, I haven't any strange things in my emulator
thanks buddy!
I looked around the .cab and didn't find anything out of the ordinary. There's a file called config.xml, which is where the username and password are stored. There are two DLLs, both of which are completely legitimate (one is ManilaDotNetSDK.dll and the other is OpenNETCF.Drawing.dll). Then there is a file called XLokalisten.exe and a Start Menu shortcut called XLokalisten.lnk. There are no registry entries. Unless the EXE itself is pulling your password and sending somewhere it shouldn't be sent, this cab looks fine.
I also took a fast look on the disassebled code and all is right.
You can use it without afraid

Can't find an option to create document in Quickoffice

Hi
I realize this question isn't xda specific but I didn't know where else to ask. Anyways you guys are always helpful.
just bought my desire today but I can't seem to find an option to create a document in quickoffice. I open up the program but it just says "no files found on sd card".
Now I don't believe that the program can only edit documents that I transfer onto it, that would be absurd.
Anyone got any clues on how to acheive creating a new file?
I was under the impression that no version of Quickoffice for Android could currently edit or create office documents - it's view only as far as I'm aware.
If you want to edit/create, you need DocumentsToGo.
Regards,
Dave
It doesn't have the option I'm afraid.....
Check out documents to go on Android market. It's not free but I believe its on offer at the moment $14.99 I believe..... well worth the money
Ahhhh foxmeister you JUST got me there!
QuickOffice is a read only application.
If you want to create/edit MS Office Docs, get Docs To Go (from the market). There's a free viewer and a paid-for app for creating and editing. I bought it recently for the promotional price of $14.99 (about £9.99 in the UK) - just checked and it's still on offer.
Edit: Looks like zippyioa beat me to it - though I believe the price is $14.99.
Thankyou all for the info. Documents to go looks like the app for me. Very helpful.

Sorry, I just got a new Kindle Fire, and after spending several minutes trying to figure out how to make a new document in QuickOffice (which comes standard and can't be removed),
I just have to agree with this post... THAT IS TOTALLY ABSURD!
Please tell me the paid version is not similarly limited.
Why in hell do you excavate a one and a half-year-old thread and post something about Kindle Fire, which has absolutely nothing to do with the desire??
why do you want to create a document on your phone? just curious, because i can not imagine I would make an essay on my desire and if for note-taking there are different much better apps

[Q] .hpimage.vfs on root of sd card ?

I swear I did search first, even did a few general Google searches. Ultimately figured I'd try here.
So, my SD card is down to 500mb. I'm trying to clear up some space, and notice a file on the root of the card called .HPIMAGE.VFS. It's about 150mb. I tried to open it with root explorer, but it won't open it. So I long press on it and select 'open as text file', and root explorer force closes.
I Google searched, and found really random and confusing search results for it that made no sense to me.Thought I'd ask here If anyone has ever seen it, or familiar with it. I wanna delete it, but not if Android needs it. Oh, and when I plugged into a pc in mass storage/disk drive to try to open and inspect it, it doesn't show up on my card at all! That's the real kicker
I have no idea what it is and sure as hell don't remember ever downloading something like that.
If anyone knows anything about what this could be, or understands it, please let me know. It'd be much appreciated. Thank you.
Scott,
Do you happen to have (or have used that card in) a HP all-in-one printer? The .HPIMAGE.VFS file is a collection of thumbnails generated by the printer. That way when you put the card in the printer, it doesn't have to re-do the thumbnails and slow down scrolling through the pictures.
If you are not worried about the thumbnails (since the printer will regenerate the file), you can go ahead and remove it from your SD card. There is also an option in the preferences menu of the printer to stop the thumbnails from being generated.
Hope this helps.

Nivron, thanks so much man. I knew if I posted this here, at xda, someone far more tech savvy than myself would have some idea. Yeah, the search results I got did appear to indicate something about HP printer, and thumbnails, but also seemed to indicate a lot of confused people. (Like myself). I couldn't think of a time I used a printer (if in fact it was related to that). But your post jogged my memory enough that now I do remember I did exactly that on Halloween. Thanks so much man.
And toast, since it turns out this is entirely unrelated to Android or winmo, and by extension, xda, please feel free to delete. I love xda.
Again, thank you.
Glad you figured it out! XDA is a great place for info, indeed!
